GYPSY is Iranian-born director Amir Shervan's penultimate movie, sandwiched between KILLING American STYLE and SAMURAI COP. Fans of the director - if indeed there are any - will know what to expect here from the production, as this is very similar to the rest of Shervan's output, i.e. in essence it's a sprawling action-narrative. The film has a different setting to normal with a more rural, desert feel with ranches and scrubland providing the back drop to the action. The hero is another long-haired muscle guy who looks just like the Samurai Cop and the bad guys are another nondescript group of thugs with rape and murder in mind.
The early part of the film is a little slow and a lot of it is taken up with extensive nudity from the starlets. There's a skinny dipping scene which reveals in the nudity of the two actresses and later some ludicrous porn style sex scenes with pneumatic blondes. Later the action picks up with some martial arts, a handful of machete fights, and the usual gun battles. Once again the gunshot sounds are provided by what sounds like cannon blasts and there's even a guest appearance from a mountain lion at one point. Robert Z'Dar is credited here but I didn't spot him (unless he was in a blink and miss it cameo) although old-timer Stuart Whitman plays in support as a local sheriff. GYPSY's not very good, but B-movie lovers will lap it up regardless.
