Julia Louis-Dreyfus is willing to admit her Veep character bears some similarities to a real-life presidential nominee.
Amid the show’s election year resurgence, the Golden Globe winner reasoned that her morally bankrupt politician character Selina Meyer is more like Donald Trump than his opponent Kamala Harris.
“In Veep, I play a very unhappy vice president, and at a certain point in a run of the show, I have the opportunity to run for president,” she explained on MSNBC.
“Now, I do want to say one thing about the character I play on Veep. I do want to say I play a very, shall we say, almost narcissistic, sociopathic, mega-maniacal type of person,” added Louis-Dreyfus. “I am not a Kamala Harris type. I am possibly much more like someone from the other party whose name I shall not even utter.”

Veep‘s election fundraiser reunion has booked some special guests.
Joining the cast and writers of HBO’s iconic political comedy for a live table read event on Sunday are Veep creator Armando Iannucci, along with Larry David, Jason Alexander and Kevin Smith.
“We’re so thrilled to have Armando, the creator of Veep, joining us,” Veep‘s showrunner David Mandel tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And I am so excited to have my old boss Larry David along with Jason Alexander. It’s kind of like a mini-Seinfeld reunion stuffed inside a Veep reunion. Like a turducken.”
Of the filmmaker of such classic franchises as Jay and Silent Bob and Mallrats, Mandel adds, “Kevin Smith is the biggest Veep fan I know and his movies have always been as wonderfully foul as Veep, so it’s a perfect combination to have him as part of our table read!”

It was the awards shot heard ’round the world. “Hacks” beat “The Bear” at the 2024 Emmys for Best Comedy Series, despite the FX cooking comedy being heavily favorited by pundits and earning a new record for the most wins (11) by a comedy program in a single year. Now, all eyes are on the “Hacks” vs. “The Bear” rematch at the 2025 Golden Globes where, unsurprisingly, the two shows are at the top of our racetrack odds.
“The Bear” is currently out front to win Best Comedy Series at the Golden Globes with leading 37/10 odds, though Max’s “Hacks” has been gaining on it ever since the Emmys upheaval; it now enjoys odds of 19/5. These two front-runners are followed in descending order by “Only Murders in the Building” at 5/1 odds, “Abbott Elementary” at 6/1 odds, “Shrinking” at 19/2 odds, and “Palm Royale” at 13/1 odds.

“Inside Out 2” introduces several news emotions in Riley’s head, but it also welcomes back some familiar favorites from the first film. No matter your preference among them though, you’re going to recognize many of their voices.
Now 13 years old and getting ready to head into high school — without her best friends, as it turns out — Riley has officially hit puberty, and it’s unsurprisingly rough goings. It means dealing with Anxiety and Envy and Embarrassment, and Riley quickly loses her sense of self.
Though those emotions might be a headache for her, they’re fun for fans, especially considering who’s voicing them.
Here are the voices you might recognize in the “Inside Out 2” cast now that the film is streaming on Disney+.

While sometimes adding a new character is the worst thing that can happen to a sitcom (looking at you new kids and babies), other times it elevates a show to a whole new level of hilarity. Just imagine how much less trouble the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia gang would have gotten into without Frank Reynolds bankrolling them? Or how many fewer times the word “literally” would have been uttered on Parks and Recreation if Rob Lowe never joined the cast?
It’s literally frightening to imagine it. So instead, check out this list of great sitcom characters who didn’t arrive until their show’s second season.

It has been 25 years since Seinfeld came out and there were two characters that had growing chemistry that fans may never forget. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston’s characters are precisely the ones being referred to right now. Julia took on the role of Elaine Benes, who was best friends with the lead character of the show. Cranston was Tim Whatley, Jerry Seinfeld’s handsome dentist who charmed Elaine.

For the 75th Emmys ceremony, which honored TV work from 2022 to 2023 but was postponed until January 2024 because of industry strikes, TV Academy members lined up almost entirely behind a single drama (HBO’s departing Succession), a single comedy (FX’s rookie The Bear) and a single limited/anthology series (Netflix’s Beef).
Eight months later, at the 76th Emmys — meaning both last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies and Sunday night’s Primetime ceremony — two shows, both from Disney’s resurgent FX division, had record-breaking hauls: the limited-turned-drama series Shōgun took home 18 prizes, more than any other show in a single cycle; and the second season of The Bear snagged 11, surpassing by one its own record for most wins by a comedy in a single cycle.
And yet, oddly enough, there was less of a dominant sweep of the genres at the 76th Emmys than there had been at the 75th.

“The West Wing” cast members reunited on stage at the Emmys Sunday night in honor of the show’s 25th anniversary next week.
Stars Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Dulé Hill, Janel Moloney and Richard Schiff were all on stage during the ceremony to present the award for best drama series.
Although it was a brief segment, the cast appeared on a replica of the set. They also poked fun at the modern political climate.
“It’s hard to believe that just 25 years ago, [creator] Aaron [Sorkin] and the writers actually had to use their imaginations to create interesting plotlines for ‘The West Wing,'” Janney quipped.
“Unlike today, where storylines could be plucked right off the news — storylines that writers would have deemed a bit far-fetched, if not utterly ridiculous, 25 years ago,” Schiff added.

Will Smith walked onto the stage at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night. Still, any tension associated with that name and the awards stage was quickly assuaged when he opened his mouth to accept the outstanding writing for a drama series award.
“First of all, relax. Despite my name, I come in peace,” Smith, who is not the famous actor, but the showrunner for the Apple TV hit series Slow Horses, told the crowd at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The crowd laughed at the callback to one of the most notorious moments in recent awards show history.
Many will recall what has been dubbed “the slap,” when the actor Will Smith, of Men in Black and King Richard fame, walked onto the stage during Chris Rock’s presentation and slapped him across the face. This attack on live TV, which shocked the show’s guests and those watching worldwide,...

If you were to take the wide-eyed wonder of a Steven Spielberg, the impish mischief of a Joe Dante, plus the vibrant visuals of prime Pixar and somehow blitz them together in a Magic Bullet blender, the resulting concoction might well resemble Sketch, an audaciously gonzo first feature by Seth Worley.
Although the tween tale may be admittedly lacking in singular originality, it more than compensates for all its borrowed bits with a Skittles-hued sugar rush of a live-action romp, with an unusual take on family therapy in which a 10-year-old girl’s grief manifests in violent drawings come to life.
Working with an engaging, spirited cast and a talented visual effects crew, Worley, a VFX aficionado whose prior directorial output has been mainly in the field of corporate-branded videos, turns out a hard-to-resist, all-ages crowd tickler that seems certain to land distribution on the heels of its Toronto International Film Festival bow.

‘The Franchise,’ Superhero Comedy From ‘Veep’ Creator Armando Iannucci, Drops First Stressful Teaser
If you thought Marvel movies were stressful, you ain’t seen nothing yet. HBO dropped the first teaser for “The Franchise,” the premium cable network’s upcoming high-pressure comedy about creating a superhero franchise in Hollywood. The series will premiere on Oct. 6.
The upcoming show comes from Armando Iannucci, best known for creating “Veep” and “The Thick of It,” as well as Sam Mendes and Jon Brown.
“Just another 83 days, and then we’re done,” Himesh Patel as Daniel says in the teaser while rushing down a hall with people filing after him. “I’d savor every moment.”
As is typically the case with Iannucci’s work, it’s difficult to know how much of that statement is rooted in truth and how much is sarcasm thinly masking an impending mental breakdown. That manic tone continues throughout the teaser as characters call this movie everything from “a scrotum resting on...

For the past 18 years, superheroes have dominated Hollywood storytelling, quickly becoming a pervasive genre, complete with singular tropes and themes. So ubiquitous and sometimes all too familiar, these clearly defined storytelling conventions make the superhero genre ripe fodder for satire. So, right on cue, from Armando Iannucci, a contemporary master of satire, the voice behind “Veep,” “In the Thick of It” and “Death of Stalin,” and Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes comes “The Franchise,” a half-hour comedy looking at the inside of the superhero factory-making machine.

The Variety and Chanel Female Filmmakers Dinner brought together an A-list lineup of Hollywood stars and creatives including Andrew Garfield, Elizabeth Olsen, “Nightbitch” director Marielle Heller (who attended this event mere moments before her film’s premiere), Danielle Deadwyler, Barry Keoghan and more for a vibrant night amidst the Toronto Film Festival. The vibe was electric, with drinks flowing, delicious food on hand and a spontaneous game of “Two Truths and a Lie” breaking out.
The event, which took place at Soho House Toronto, featured a cocktail hour downstairs before a three-course dinner on the second floor of the social club. Inside, the hotly anticipated “Saturday Night” film cast Cory Michael Smith, Lamorne Morris, Ella Hunt and Dylan O’Brien stopped in before their Tuesday night premiere. In his review of "Oppenheimer" for The New Yorker, Richard Brody wrote that "the film is so intent on making Oppenheimer an icon of conflicted conscience that it pays little attention to his character over all." A prime example of this comes in the form of the Oval Office scene, where, having delivered the atomic bomb to his military bosses, J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) is called to a meeting with President Harry Truman.
Truman, played by Gary Oldman in a very brief cameo role, is positively giddy following his decision to drop the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, yet finds himself faced with a chastened Oppie, who feels as though he has "blood on his hands." The President balks at this confession, waving a handkerchief in the physicist's face before declaring that the citizens of the leveled Japanese cities care only about who dropped the bomb, not who made it.

One of the first films that made me fall in love with cinema was Steven Spielberg’s enduring “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” While I’m most certainly not alone in this, that it’s stuck with so many is just more of a testament to its greatness. With its ragtag group of scrappy, resourceful kids navigating the perils of growing up and the somehow equally relatable challenges of caring for a kindly otherworldly visitor that the government is after, it’s a film that soars every time you watch it.
There’s a good chance that Seth Worley, writer and director of the monster movie “Sketch,” was similarly impacted by Spielberg’s work. His rather fun feature debut offers its own compassionate and frequently clever romp that, while not as good as “E.T.” by any stretch of the imagination, has plenty of that same sense of charm hiding away.

This year, “Shōgun” has extended the unbroken 2020s trend of at least one series earning multiple Best Drama Writing Emmy notices at once. Although none of the earlier cases resulted in wins, the new FX series is generally expected to fare differently, especially since, unlike most of its predecessors, it won’t have to fend off three-time winner “Succession.”
Of the 10 individuals presently nominated for this writing award, only 2021 champ Peter Morgan (“The Crown”) has competed for it before. Excluding his show and “Slow Horses,” a majority of the programs in this lineup launched in 2024.
In order to determine the likelihood of “Shōgun” making good on one of its bids, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 24 other Primetime Emmy categories by September 15.

After July’s Republican National Convention attracted such luminaries as Hulk Hogan, Kid Rock and Amber Rose, this year’s Democratic National Convention is drawing arguably bigger stars like Oprah, Spike Lee, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Stevie Wonder.
This year’s DNC, celebrating Vice President Kamala Harris’ historic presidential nomination, was hosted by Tony Goldwyn, Ana Navarro, Mindy Kaling and Kerry Washington, with each star emceeing one night of the event. The four-day convention featured performances by Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Patti Labelle and other major musicians; surprise appearances by the likes of Oprah Winfrey, who gave a speech urging those who are registered as independent like herself to vote; a daytime panel moderated by Julia Louis-Dreyfus; and more.
Besides the noteworthy political figures who made an appearance at the DNC, including President Joe Biden and Harris herself, these are the recognizable names who have been spotted at events around the convention.

They join previously announced series regulars Maggie Q, Courtney Taylor, John Carroll Lynch, Michael Mosley, Rebecca Field, Victoria Moroles and Amy Hill.
The untitled series follows Detective Renée Ballard (Q), who is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division — a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest caseload in the city. Who better than to bring together the country’s eight Democratic governors than Julia Louis-Dreyfus? The actress famously starred on Veep as a fictional female politician and on that series, she hilariously never advocated for women. Famously recirculated Veep scenes of late have reminded fans of the HBO comedy how she eviscerated her political aides for beginning speeches with, “As a woman …” or for suggesting that she run for president on an all-female ticket. (“The American people work hard for a living, Ok? They don’t need that kind of bullshit,” she quipped.)
But in real life, the Emmy-winning actress, producer and activist is quite the opposite. In town for the Democratic National Convention, the avid Kamala Harris supporter hosted a sit-down conversation with the country’s eight Democratic women governors.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus opened a panel featuring eight women Democratic governors Wednesday with a few quips about Donald Trump and Jd Vance, while saying she was among those filled with “new hope and joy” over the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz ticket.
The event in downtown Chicago was for the Democratic Governors Association and the DGA’s Women Governors Fund and came at the event on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention.
“This is so cool,” Louis-Dreyfus said at the outset. “We are very honored to have eight highly intelligent, highly capable women leaders for the 21st century with us — or what Jd Vance might call a coven of semi menstruating witches.”
The panel included Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Maine Gov. Janet Mills, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healy and Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly.
Louis-Dreyfus called the Harris-Walz campaign “contagious.

Nobody genuinely thinks "Emily in Paris" is a good show, right? It doesn't seem like anybody in the world is comparing Darren Star's Netflix original to, say, "The Wire" or "The Sopranos," or even great television comedies like "Veep" and "30 Rock." The offenses committed by "Emily in Paris" and the titular character Emily Cooper -- gratingly played by Lily Collins -- are numerous and infuriating, especially as the show enters its fourth season. There's a larger issue, though, other than the show just being "bad" or "an astoundingly terrible vision of what it looks like to live in Paris." The show is rotten from its very root because it's fundamentally incapable of telling a story.
"Emily in Paris" is abysmal at storytelling, to the point where it doesn't even bother with the basic conventions of the form. There is never any real conflict on "Emily in Paris," there are no stakes whatsoever,...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is shutting down the comparisons between Vice President Kamala Harris and her fictional Veep character, Selina Meyer.
In a new interview, the star of the HBO comedy series explained why Selina Meyer is not like the Democratic Presidential nominee despite sharing a similar trajectory.
“People might need reminding that Selina Meyer and Kamala Harris are not alike,” Louis-Dreyfus told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show. “On Veep, I played a narcissistic, like, megalomaniac sociopath, and that is not Kamala Harris. It might be another candidate in the race…”
Colbert asked Louis-Dreyfus if she could assign a character that resembled Republican Vice Presidential nominee Jd Vance, which one it would be, and she said, “That would be Jonah Ryan.”
In the Veep series, Timothy Simons plays Jonah Ryan, a power-hungry White House aide who eventually becomes the Vice President of the U.S. and is subsequently impeached.

Chicago — Things were pretty quiet around the Auditorium Theatre in downtown Chicago on Tuesday morning — probably no surprise, given how late things went the night before. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” kicked off a four-night run of live shows from the venue — part of the Roosevelt University campus — with an episode that didn’t get off the air until a little after 1 a.m. Central Time.
That’s perhaps why the Auditorium still seemed a bit dead around lunchtime — save one lone man sitting outside the theater and carrying two big backpacks. Either he was ready to wait for days until he could snag a ticket to the show, or he was a Roosevelt student who had picked that specific spot to sit and scroll his phone for hours.
Beyond that, pedestrians and Roosevelt students strolled past the Auditorium without giving much thought to the major late night talk...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has touched down at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, where she first visited Stephen Colbert’s Late Show before she hosts a Wednesday event with the country’s Democratic women governors.
Colbert is hosting his late-night show live from Chicago during the DNC’s run this week, filming from Chicago’s Auditorium Theater, a short distance away from the convention hub’s United Center. And Louis-Dreyfus, along with Hillary Rodham Clinton — one of the DNC opening night’s speakers — were two of his first guests. The women got a chance to interact backstage — “So exciting! Divine,” said Louis-Dreyfus — and when the Veep star took a seat on Colbert’s couch, she revisited the hilarious story of the pair’s very first interaction together.
In 2013, the second year that Veep was on the air, Louis-Dreyfus retold the story of how people in her hair and makeup department on the series...

Kamala Harris and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ “Veep” character Selina Meyer were both female vice presidents, but the actor says that’s where their similarities end.
During an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” live from the Democratic National Convention, Louis-Dreyfus discussed the spike in popularity “Veep” has experienced following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from this year’s election and Harris’ announcement of her candidacy.
When Colbert brought up the fact that “Veep” viewership has increased by 350%, Louis-Dreyfus said, “It’s a great thing, I think?” Still, she felt the need to clarify that Meyer and Harris do not share the same personality traits.
“Let me explain to you, on ‘Veep’ I played a narcissistic, megalomaniac sociopath, and that is not Kamala Harris,” she said, adding: “It might be another candidate in the race.”
Colbert then asked which “Veep” character reminds Louis-Dreyfus the most of Donald Trump’s running mate Jd Vance.

Remember what political and cultural discourse was like before everything revolved around figuring out how a cruel dilettante from Queens managed to become president of the United States? I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately with the rise of the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Finally, we’ve got other stuff to talk about in pop culture and politics besides The Apprentice and The Art of the Deal.
The Harris-Walz ticket has reinvigorated a need for broad cultural literacy. Harris began her presidential campaign with...

CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” are set to travel to Chicago for a week of shows during the Democratic National Convention next week. On the docket: A Kamala Harris biofilm created by “The Daily Show” team and a guest list on “The Late Show” that includes Hillary Rodham Clinton and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
The two shows’ DNC plans dwarf what they ultimately were able to do last month during the Republican National Convention. In particular, “The Daily Show” had planned to hail that week from Milwaukee, but then the assassination attempt on Donald Trump changed those plans. Instead, “The Daily Show” canceled its Monday telecast that week, and kept to its usual New York City homebase the rest of the week.
This time out, “The Daily Show’s” “Indecision 2024” coverage will include four nights at the Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago.
