A version of this review first ran during the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.
When you saw Joaquin Phoenix dancing down those outdoor steps toward the end of “Joker,” you probably didn’t think about Princess Elsa belting out “Let It Go” in the 2013 animated film “Frozen.” But Mark Cousins did –- and that’s the difference between him and you and me and the rest of the people who see Cousins make that juxtaposition in his documentary “The Story of Film: A New Generation.”
Cousins ties Joker and Elsa together because of the defiance at the heart of his dance and her song, and he does so at the start of “The Story of Film: A New Generation.” The documentary was an extraordinarily apt film to screen on the opening afternoon of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, which came 14 months after the pandemic had forced the festival to cancel its 2020 edition. Kick Out the Jams: The Story of Xfm, from director Ray Burdis, is a retelling of the birth and development of a fledgling pirate radio station and those passionate few that would pave their own way in the pursuit of giving a voice to the growing popularity of the indie Britpop scene in the 1990s. More than that this is a snapshot of the revolutionisation of the airwaves from the voices of the DJs at ground level, the friendships formed and careers made. Even more than that this doc is a love letter to a moment in time, a year not to be forgotten and a feeling of true optimism and unbridled excitement.
Now, I do love a good documentary, especially ones that tell the stories of a time that although I wasn’t exactly well in the know about what was happening, I was aware something was happening. Music...

“American Idol” continued with the ninth episode of Season 20 on Monday, April 4. This installment of the ABC reality TV competition saw judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie choosing the Top 24 that will compete for America’s vote. The final Hollywood week challenge had singers perform one more solo with a live band, called Showstoppers. The Top 24 will perform at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii on Sunday, April 10 and Monday, April 11.
So who was the best of the night? And did they step up their game since their first Hollywood Week performance? Below I rank each hopeful from the least impressive (but with room to grow) to a possible Season 20 frontrunner. Of course we didn’t see them all, so it wasn’t an even playing field for everyone.

During Week 3 of “American Song Contest,” the jury of 56 industry professionals ranked the 12 original songs from first to last, with Tenneesee’s Tyler Braden advancing to the semi-finals thanks to his tune “Seventeen.” The most famous singer on the docket was Alaska’s Jewel, a four-time Grammy nominee and recent “The Masked Singer” winner. However, her uplifting song “The Story” (watch above) failed to connect with the jury, coming in ninth place in their rankings. Don’t give up, Jewel fans — she’s not out of the competition just yet.
The audience at home now gets to weigh in with their votes, which will be tabulated alongside the jury rankings. Vote by visiting the “ASC” website directly, or by using the NBC App or TikTok. If Jewel gets enough support from the 56 states/territories, she will be able to overcome the low jury rankings. Three participants will advance based on...

During the third week of NBC’s “American Song Contest,” the national jury was tasked with ranking 12 original songs (as opposed to 11) from first to last. At the end of the April 4 episode, hosts Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg announced the results: Tennessee country singer Tyler Braden was ranked the highest by the jury of 56 industry professionals, so he moved on to the semi-finals. Tyler’s original song, “Seventeen,” was a soft, reflective melody about a couple looking back on their lives. Watch the performance above.
The fate of the other 11 participants now rests in the hands of You at home. Your voting results will be tabulated alongside the jury rankings — it’s a complicated process — to determine which three acts will join Tyler in the semi-finalists. Here they all are in order of the jury rankings:
1. Tyler Braden (Tenneesee) sang “Seventeen”
2. Ale Zabala (Florida) sang “Flirt”
