On the ice planet of Hoth from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, the only way to keep warm when you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere is to cut open your Tauntaun companion and situate yourself within its innards. Thankfully, the folks at Columbia are doing their best to ensure you won’t have to […]

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Berlin Syndrome (Cate Shortland)
While the recent 10 Cloverfield Lane and Room told stories of captivity with various hooks — science-fiction and the process of healing, respectively — Cate Shortland’s approach in her latest, harrowing drama Berlin Syndrome makes room for more nuance and depth. Locked in a Berlin apartment, there is little hope for our protagonist for nearly the entire runtime. And while some of the story’s turns can feel overtly manipulative,...

To be honest, I don’t get the fanboy love that the rather middling hockey comedy “Goon” has on some corners of the internet. A passable, sorta forgettable film, I’m frankly a bit amazed that its specific brand of broad Canadian comedy managed to travel beyond its borders, but indeed it has. More importantly, however, the movie was a big hit in its native land, and so now we have a sequel.

Melisandre, otherwise known as “The Red Woman” or “The Red Witch” (and several other names by Shireen Baratheon fans that I won’t mention) is one of the most loathed characters on Game of Thrones, but lately fans have had no choice but to put their faith in her as everyone’s favourite, as Jon Snow’s fate lies in her evil little hands.
Back to reality though, Carice van Houten, the actress behind Melisandre, couldn’t be any more likeable. This sexy Dutch actress who’s pushing 40 (unbelievable, right?) is known for a string of roles including Valkyrie, Black Book and Repo Men and has played alongside big shots like Bill Nighy, Jude Law, Eddie Redmayne and Tom Cruise.

The 2008 draft of Interstellar varied wildly from the one Christopher Nolan brought to the screen. We take a look at what changed...
Nb: This article contains major spoilers for Interstellar.
Whatever your opinion of Interstellar, it’s difficult to fault the scale of Christopher Nolan’s odyssey. Propelled by great blasts from composer Hans Zimmer’s church organs, Interstellar explores both the fragility of human relationships and the enormity of the universe, our need for interconnection and also our desire to strike out and explore the unknown.
From its genesis, Interstellar was a movie with big ideas. Beginning life in 2006 as a project for Steven Spielberg to direct, screenwriter Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher) was hired to pen the script, based on an original concept by producer Lynda Obst and theoretical physicist Kip Thorne. Jonathan worked on the project for several years before Spielberg departed, and when Christopher Nolan took...

The Winter Olympics are still a month away, but that isn't going to stop major sponsors and corporations to try to cash in on the event early.
In this new commercial from Procter & Gamble, children ranging in age from newborns to young adults are shown falling down over and over again. Inside on the carpet. Outside in the driveway. The Amazing Race, Season 23, Episode 11: “Amazing ‘Crazy’ Race”
Aired Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Two-hour finale! Can you feel the excitement? It’s hard, considering we’ve been looking at these same four teams as front-runners basically from the beginning, and that they never really broke out of their initial molds, but nice that the fun-loving Afghanimals still get to play, and that we get to finally see everyone really go for it in terms of breaking alliances for the million. Jason and Amy depart first from Indonesia and fly to Tokyo.
Their strategy is to stay with the group, so they make sure to tell Mr. and Mrs. Dr. which flight they’re on, and they let Tim and Marie in on the info as well. All three have a semi-pathetic pow-wow on how to keep the Afghanimals out, still citing the Afghanimals’ “lies” as the reason,...

Half Nelson: Chadwick’s Biopic Stretched Thin
An attempt to cover fifty years in the life of South African President Nelson Mandela in the time span of two and a half hours seems as exhausting to sit through as it was daunting to piece together, even if it is based on Mandela’s own autobiography. To their credit, Justin Chadwick and screenwriter William Nicholson have made a well-paced film, albeit one that gives us a rudimentary glance at Mandela’s development, doggedly comprehensive without taking any opportunities for depth or subtlety. Its rather conservative depiction of apartheid further places the film into a textbook category and seems an appropriate and elementary learning tool for those ignorant of the subject matter. Despite adhering to the trappings of generalization as seen in many genuinely produced biopics that would have been better served by sticking to one particular moment or period, Chadwick...

According to Tom Cochrane, life is a highway we need to ride all night long.
But when you throw a pile of Canadian musicians in a sweaty arena dressing room with a bunch of former NHL players and Canadian National Women's Team members apparently life is a big ol' singalong as well.
CBC Music just published a video from this year's Juno Cup where musicians and pros sang Cochrane's "Life Is A Highway" together and it's a mighty fun time.
The rockers and jocks were together for the Juno Cup, an annual charity hockey game held during the week of the Juno Awards. This year it was held at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw, Sk.

As the force behind Silverwood Films, Lynette Howell has produced some of the most distinctive and successful independent movies of the last six years: “Half Nelson,” “The Greatest,” “Blue Valentine,” “On the Ice,” “Terri” and “28 Hotel Rooms.” Eight films in the Sundance Film Festival program in seven years is an amazingly strong record. In January, she launched Electric City Entertainment with frequent collaborator Jamie Patricof, and the duo has “Blue Valentine” filmmaker Derek Cianfrance’s follow-up “The Place Beyond the Pines” ready for its premiere at the Toronto film festival Friday, September 7. Howell here provides a concise and concrete checklist for rookie filmmakers to steer them around common obstacles and guide them through a successful post-production. 1. Don't cut money from your post budget during prep. The desire to cut money from post-production...

They say, after all, that you should write what you know, so perhaps it's no surprise that filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean's first feature, "On the Ice," is set in Barrow, Alaska, amongst the native population. That's MacLean's hometown, and while the film's dramatic tension is intriguing, what's truly fascinating is the inside look into a part of American culture most Americans know very little about. Qalli (Josiah Patkotak) and Aivaaq (Frank Qutuq Irelan) are best friends and typical teenagers. They're into hip-hop, partying, and bird-dogging chicks. They live in fairly impoverished circumstances, with Aivaaq coming over to Qalli's house on a regular basis, to avoid his mother and her substance abuse problems. It's a town full of kids who don't usually go anywhere, and that's where Qalli is the exception--he's set to leave town for college, while his buddy may have a kid on the way. They're also typical in terms of their culture.

Having made its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, On The Ice is the suspenseful story of two teenage boys growing up in an isolated Alaskan town. Early one morning, on a seal hunt with another teenager, an argument between the three boys quickly escalates into a tragic accident. Bonded by their dark secret, the two best friends are forced to create one fabrication after another in order to survive. The shocked boys stumble through guilt‐fueled days, avoiding the suspicions of their community as they weave a web of deceit.

Despite what they might think, most Americans don't know much about Alaska, aside from "Northern Exposure," "The Grey," and Sarah Palin. "On the Ice," the debut feature from writer director Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, might change that. The drama is set in the town of Barrow, and is populated entirely by non-professional actors all of whom are of native descent. Teenager Qalli (Josiah Patkotak) and his best friend Aivaaq (Frank Qutuq Irelan) are typical teenagers, deep into hip-hop and partying with their pals. They live in relative poverty, but Qalli is on his way out, heading to college in the next few months. But an accident during a hunting trip out onto the ice leaves the two of them holding a terrible secret, one that has a chance to ruin both of their lives, unless they can keep it under wraps. More than anything, "On the Ice," is a peek into...

This week’s soundtracks review only features one new soundtrack with three re-releases and new versions of one film series’ scores.
Eastbound & Down by Various Artists
Eastbound & Down is an American comedy series about a former Major League Baseball superstar who fizzled out and is now adjusting to normal life while trying to get back to the Majors. The show predominantly takes place in the American south (and Mexico) and the music of the show reflects that. A majority of the musical tracks on this two-disc soundtrack could be classified as blues/southern rock or rap. This can be evidenced by the theme song, 1971’s “Going Down” by blues musician Freddie King. Almost half of the tracks are clips from the show, showcasing the humor of Eastbound. A great soundtrack for fans of the show or blues rock fans who enjoy some crude humor mixed in between the songs.

Good Friday (oops, that was totally accidental), everyone. The Fat Tuesday spirit is now gone, no more flaming skull heads riding motorcyles for us. Nope, it's just Tyler Perry films and fish out of water comedies. They are making us give up Nic Cage for Lent and I just can't stand it. This weekend we have ensemble comedy "Wanderlust," one Mister "Tyler Perry's Good Deeds" and a few other curios and offerings for your cinematic palate.
Doesn't it feel like we've been hearing about "Wanderlust" Foh-eva? Didn't they shoot this like 5 years ago? Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd play neurotic New Yorkers who end up at Alan Alda's hippie commune. Justin Theroux (Jen's boo, but you knew that), Malin Akerman, Joe Lo Truglio, Kerri Kenney, Kathryn Hahn and others co-star as the far-out denizens of said commune, while Ken Marino and Michaela Watkins steal the show as Rudd's asshole bro and his wife.

While the first two months of the year may be the critical dumping ground for some of the major studios, it’s a time when many smaller films finally fulfill their year-long path to distribution. As such, reviews published long ago finally manage to reach audiences who can see the films. We looked through the Criticwire responses for this week’s releases to see what recommendations we could infer. “Putin’s Kiss” didn’t garner a tremendous amount of feedback out of Sundance this year, although it did win at Idfa late last year. But the tale of a young girl in modern-day Russia could find a comfy home with global-minded doc fans. “On the Ice” has faced some critical disapproval (note the batch of critics clustered at the C- level). But Okpeaha MacLean’s crime tale, featuring young adult protagonists in Alaska, did gain some top recognition last year at Sundance and Berlin.

This weekend's new releases have a tough battle ahead of them with last weekend's crop of films being so strong, but This Means War seems the most likely possibility to dethrone The Vow as couples seek some late Valentine's Day alternatives. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is a bit of an unknown, but if it makes even part of what the first movie made it could still do some decent business, meanwhile Disney is releasing Studio Ghibli's The Secret World of Arrietty on quite a few screens as well. In select theatres, we have a pair of Oscar-nominated films to choose from with the high school football doc Undefeated making its debut alongside the Belgian crime drama Bullhead, and we also have a movie called Thin Ice starring Greg Kinnear, Billy Crudup and Alan Arkin. What will you be checking out this weekend? Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance This Means War...

Why He's On Our Radar: There's a reason so few films are made in Northern Alaska: it's hard to access and it's really cold. Any film that comes out of the region is poised to attract attention. Thankfully the latest one to hit theaters, "On the Ice" (opening February 17), from first-time feature filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, is also a great film to boot. The thriller, based on MacLean's award-winning short "Sikumi," concerns two teenage boys living in an isolated Alaskan town who become embroiled in a web of lies and deceit following a tragic accident. The film premiered in the Dramatic Competition at last year's Sundance Film Festival and went on to win multiple awards, including Best First Feature at the 2011 Berlinale. What’s Next: “I would like to be able to make a lot of movies in the Artic and a lot of movies that involve my culture,” MacLean told Indiewire.

Last weekend, cinemas saw a box-office bonanza, with the top four movies combining for more than $150 million in ticket sales. Will similar success continue through the holiday weekend? Let's take a look at the new flicks this week in Moviefone's Weekend Movie Preview. Nationwide Releases "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" What's the story: Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze in this reboot of the 2007 blockbuster, "Ghost Rider." In "Spirit of Vengeance," viewers find Blaze hiding out in Eastern Europe. When he's asked by members of a church to help save the life of a possessed boy and rid him of Satan, Johnny steps up to help. Box office prediction: The first "Ghost Rider" did gangbusters at the box office, grossing $228 million worldwide, including a $45 million opening weekend. With the return of Cage as Blaze, you can likely expect big numbers, especially since its biggest competition is probably from "Phantom Menace 3D,...

Like plenty of teenagers everywhere, the high-schoolers in On The Ice smoke pot, talk shit about each other’s girlfriends and boyfriends, listen to hip-hop, and throw parties when their parents aren’t home. But they’re also Iñupiaq kids coming of age in isolated Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost city in the U.S., and the icy unfamiliarity of this remote but thoroughly lived-in locale turns a standard story of an accident and an attempted cover-up into something bracing. Director Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, who expanded On The Ice from his 2008 short, grew up in the town where the ...

Back in 2008, Alaskan director Andrew Okpeaha MacLean was awarded Best Short at the Sundance Film Festival for his period film Sikumi, about a murder and its aftermath in an Inuit community. MacLean, one of Filmmaker’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” that year, had set the buzzed-about tale in his frozen Arctic hometown of Barrow, the historical seat of the Iñupiaq people, casting locals and shooting out on the ice in subzero temperatures. (Sin Nombre writer-director Cary Fukunaga lensed the film.) Last year at Sundance, MacLean unveiled On the Ice, a feature-length movie loosely based on the short film; while the basic set-up remained the same, the story had a contemporary setting where hoodie-wearing Inupiat youth striving to emulate their hip-hop icons gambol about town on snowmobiles instead of dog sleds. MacLean shifted gears to jittery suspense as well in order to explore the moral complexities of guilt and responsibility within a traditional culture.

Hecho en Cine, a production company based both in Texas and Patagonia, Argentina, produced the 12-minute movie, which will tentatively have its U.S. premiere in Austin this April at the 15th Annual Cine Las Americas International Film Festival.
Sobre la Estepa was funded through Kickstarter, and was shot in San Carlos de Bariloche, a city situated in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in the province of Rio Negro, Argentina.
Ty Roberts, Hecho en Cine co-founder and Sobre la Estepa writer and director, said the idea for the movie came to him after meeting "interesting" people on a location scout in Patagonia.
"They immediately caught my eye," Roberts said. "It was just a really odd and interesting combination of characters."

Every year Sundance fascinates festival goers with a drama that introduces audiences to a hidden corner of America. Last year it was On the Ice; the previous year, Winters Bone. That honor this year belongs to Benh Zeitlin's Beasts of the Southern Wild. The fascinating corner is the land at the southern edge of the Mississippi Delta, just outside the levees. Zeitlin refers to this world as 'The Bathtub' and his story is a magical tale of the people who cling to their home come hell and high water. Six year-old Hush Puppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) lives with her father Wink (Dwight Henry) in separate shacks propped up on top of steel drums on top of whatever other scrap metal Wink has foraged. They spend...

Writer-director Andrew Okpeaha MacLean makes his feature debut with the L.A. Film Fest entry On the Ice, a character tale about two Alaskan teenagers wrestling with guilt after the accidental murder of a friend. With its isolated setting, cast of non-actors, and rollercoaster ride of a Sundance premiere, the indie drama isn't the easiest sell for mainstream America, but it's a film that deserves to find an audience -- a window into a generation of Alaskan teens balancing native culture with hip-hop, at a unique crossroads between community traditions and the volatile influence of urban culture.
