The 49er. I'm not talking about the San Fran type that was just a couple of bobbled balls away from the Super Bowl this year... I’m talking about the real thing. The water panning, gold tooth wearing, scraggly haired, crazy eyed character from early American history. That's what we're looking at in the upcoming short The Prospector's Curse.
Yukon Cornelius be damned. You know these early prospectors had to be a little unbalanced. You can't just sit with a pan in the water all day hoping gold will wash up into it without being a little touched. It's this fun thought that drives The Prospector's Curse, which incidentally carries the tagline "There's blood in them there hills!". It's early in 2012, but that is officially one of our favorite tags so far this year.
The film is currently in post-production in Toronto, Canada. For more info visit The Prospector's Curse Facebook page.

Unfortunately, SyFy‘s Red: Werewolf Hunter hit in the midst of holiday and sporting options that took over the collective mindset, and the media push for the show was not quite what it might have been. An entertaining bit of fantasy fun somewhere in the “tradition” of SyFy’s other fable spins (Tin Man and Alice), Red: Werewolf Hunter stars new media sensation Felicia Day as a descendant of Little Red Riding Hood… sort of… or something.
The show will air again sometime in December, and Twitter clued me in earlier today that there are hopes it will be available online before that, so you will have a chance at it again, but the interview with Felicia Day was too interesting to let lie.
It was an especially interesting call, and necessarily edited though it may be, I tried to leave much of it as it happened. Well, plus, I...

Felicia Day has gone from battling vampires on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to their hairier foes on Syfy's "Red: Werewolf Hunter."
The Syfy original movie that premieres Saturday (Oct. 30) in time to warm up fans for Halloween centers on Virginia Sullivan, aka Red, who comes from a long line of werewolf hunters beginning with the legendary Red Riding Hood.
"I've left my family to sort of find myself outside of the obligation of werewolf hunting," Day tells the press. "And I'm bringing my fiancee [Nathan played by Kavan Smith] back to introduce to my family hoping that I will be able to get permission to tell him this secret part of my life. He gets bitten and it's sort of a struggle to try to save everything I want would love in the movie."
Although she could see how some would find similarities between Red and her "Buffy" character Vi, Day thinks the stories diverge.

Earlier this week, SciFi Mafia had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Felicia Day (The Guild, Eureka), star of SyFy’s Red: Werewolf Hunter premiering tonight. Red is part of SyFy’s series of modernized fairy tales like Beauty and the Beast and Hansel and Gretel and tonight’s installment is just what we need to celebrate Halloween.
Day stars in Red: Werewolf Hunter along with Kavan Smith (Stargate: Extinction, Eureka) and Stephen McHattie (Immortals, Happy Town). Day portrays Virginia Sullivan, “a descendant of Little Red Riding Hood [who] brings her fiancé home to meet her family and tell him about the family business – they are werewolf hunters.”
Just how does Red modernize the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood? Day tells us how we go from the fairy tale of a victim of a wolf attack to perpetrating slayage on werewolves.

Red: Werewolf Hunter (Saturday, 9/8c, Syfy)
Not to be confused with the Bruce Willis/Helen Mirren movie about Retired and Extremely Dangerous spies, this Halloween-ready TV-movie stars Felicia Day (The Guild, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog) as a carrot-topped descendent of Little Red Riding Hood who's mixing it up with a different sort of wolfish predator. Things get complicated when Red brings home a fiancée who get bitten by a werewolf, making him a prime target of her werewolf-hunting family. Can Red save the day?

Queen of Internet geek fantasy Felicia Day makes her leading lady debut in the SyFy Channel’s “Red: Werewolf Hunter”, which purports to tell “the true story” of little red riding hood. Not really, but just go along with it. The film co-stars Kavan Smith, Stephen McHattie, David Reale, and Greg Bryk. Obviously, being that she’s a natural redhead, Felicia Day plays the titular character, a badass werewolf hunter who teams up with some dudes to take out the hairy suckers in a small town. “Red” premieres October 30th on the SyFy Channel as part of the cable net’s 31 Days of Halloween promo. Some promo videos for the film below. Not exactly the best quality, I’ll grant you, but better than nothing, right? The two-minute sneak peek (third vid) is better. “Red: Werewolf Hunter” premieres October 30 at 9pm as part of Syfy’s “31 Days of Halloween” promo.
