The movie is based on the short novel "Ginkgo, Ginkgo" (Yinxing yinxing) written by Xu Lan in 1990.
Director Yu Feihong first read the novel on which the movie is based on a plane flight because she wanted to kill some time, but the story lingered in her heart for 13 years. Her friends eventually convinced her to do the movie.
