The story takes place in 1947 as evidenced in the narration of when Bayou was discharged from the Army and by the year 1947 printed on the car's license plate. However, the days of the week listed on the three visible posters in the Capitol Royale window are incorrect for 1947. February 9, 1947, would be a Sunday and not Thursday as listed on the poster. March 23, 1947, would be a Sunday, and not a Tuesday; May 23 1947 would be a Friday and not a Saturday. Even if the year was 1946 or 1948 or 1949; the days of the week would still be incorrect.
When Bayou, Willie Earl, and Ira arrive in Chicago; the weather is warm or spring-like as indicated by the clothes being worn and the physical demeanor of the folks out on the street. However, there are posters announcing upcoming shows on February 9 and March 23 therefore it has to be winter in Chicago, and winter in Chicago has historically always been freezing.
When Bayou arrives in Hopewell County it is 1947 according to his narration. Later on, Leanne and her husband are watching the Howdy Doody Show. Now the Howdy Doody Show made its TV appearance on December 27, 1947 therefore it had to be the Christmas season when they were watching it. However, there is no appearance or indication of a Christmas Holiday season or even of a Winter season. Additionally, the time-line is confusing since later on when Ira and the brothers arrive in Chicago for an audition there is a poster advertising an upcoming show on February 9 therefore it had to be early 1947 or late 1947 to early 1948. Whatever the case it would have been the winter holiday season but all are in summer clothes.
