Actor and rapper Queen Latifah became an action star not too long ago by starring in the CBS hit series The Equalizer. But while filming some of the show’s hard-hitting fight scenes, her background as a hip-hop artist came in handy in an interesting way.

Queen Latifah was the first and only choice to play the new vigilante Robyn McCall in the rebooted Equalizer series. Even if you’re not a Halloween person, October means spooky season. It feels like every brand, store, — and yes, every streamer, finds ways to incorporate themes of haunting and horror. Disney+ started early, with the September premiere of “Agatha All Along,” which will air new episodes for the next several weeks. In October, the streamer will debut “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” an expansion of the popular Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” which aired from 2007 to 2012.
And of course Hulu has “Huluween,” a celebration of the scariest titles either premiering on the streamer for the first time or simply highlighted from its existing library. That includes films like “Late Night with the Devil,” the series “Reginald the Vampire,” FX’s “American Horror Stories”, a Halloween specials from “Family Guy” and “Solar Opposites,” a docuseries on witch hunting, and much more.

Sanaa Hamri, executive producer and director of the Prime Video fantasy series “The Wheel of Time,” feels like she’s just getting started.
The Moroccan-born filmmaker began her career in the late 1990s directing music videos for artists such as Prince, Mariah Carey, Sting and Nicki Minaj. She transitioned to television in the mid-2000s, directing episodes of “Desperate Housewives,” “Glee,” and “Nashville.” Hamri made her feature directorial debut in 2006 with the romantic comedy “Something New” for Focus Features. She has since directed the hit 2008 sequel “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” for Warner Bros. and the romantic comedy “Just Wright” for Searchlight in 2010.
With an overall deal with Amazon Prime Video, she’s on the Primetime Emmy Awards ballot for directing “The Wheel of Time” episode “What Was Meant to Be.” The second season finale follows Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) and others to an inevitable showdown with their most formidable enemies yet.

Queen Latifah has thrived in the entertainment business — from music to movies and television into the beauty industry and beyond — for more than 30 years. But the Grammy and Emmy winner and Oscar nominee doesn’t take time to reflect on her successes.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

Queen Latifah is using everything in her arsenal to bring the titular Robyn McCall to life on CBS’ The Equalizer (Sundays, 8/7c).
The former rapper and singer relies on her musicality when it comes to fight sequences, and her sense of justice as someone who was bullied as a kid growing up in Newark, New Jersey. But when it comes to being the first Black woman to take the lead in the franchise’s history, on either the big or small screen, Latifah (née Dana Owens) is tapping into her genetic memory.

It still might be a little while before we’re able to go back to the movies again. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for February 2021, Amazon Prime is bringing the theater home. The movies are the real appeal this month.
Amazon’s offerings are highlighted by two original films of note. The first is Bliss, which premieres on Feb. 5. This will star Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek as a couple experiencing some intimacy issues. Presumably this is all just a tune up for when Wilson dons a mustache in Disney+’s Loki later in May. The other film is the sci-fi rom-com The Map of Tiny Perfect Things on Feb. 12.
Other library movies include Antz, Moulin Rouge, The Prestige, The Village, and Dazed and Confused, all of which arrive on Feb. 1. Sonic the Hedgehog is set to arrive later on Feb. 18.
Amazon is premiering only one new original series this month.

Actress Rebel Wilson is at the center of even more backlash over a comment she made claiming her new movie, “Isn’t It Romantic?,” is the first romantic-comedy film to star a plus-size woman in the lead role. The “Pitch Perfect” star made the remark on “Ellen” during a visit to the talk show on October 31, but Wilson was quickly called out on social media for forgetting about romantic-comedies starring actresses like Queen Latifah, Mo’nique, and Ricki Lake. Now Wilson is being accused of blocking on Twitter the black critics who spoke out against her.
Wilson originally reacted to the backlash by replying on Twitter, “Yeah, I of course know of these movies. But it was questionable as to whether: 1. Technically those actresses were plus size when filming those movies or 2. Technically those films are categorized/billed as a studio rom-com with a sole lead. So there’s a slight grey area.

Updated: Rebel Wilson stirred up controversy last week when she claimed she was the first plus-sized actress to star in a romantic comedy film, and now she’s apparently blocked so many critics over the questionable comment to spawn a #RebelWilsonBlockedMe hashtag.
The “Bridesmaids” star appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” Oct. 31 to discuss her new film, “Isn’t It Romantic.” She claimed that she was the “first-ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy.” In a tweet that has since received 16,000 likes, a Twitter user corrected her, referencing both Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique. Queen Latifah starred in 2006’s “The Last Holiday” and 2010’s “Just Wright,” while the Mo’Nique vehicle, “Phat Girlz,“ came out in 2006.

Rebel Wilson is facing backlash for claiming to be the “first-ever plus sized” lead of a romantic comedy, and her response only garnered more criticism.
The actress, 38, is the star of the upcoming movie Isn’t It Romantic, about a New Yorker who hits her head and wakes up stuck in a world full of romantic comedy tropes. After the first trailer premiered on Halloween, Wilson went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about the film.

Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for its upcoming meta romantic-comedy “Isn’t It Romantic?” earlier this week. The movie stars “Pitch Perfect” breakout Rebel Wilson as a woman who hits her head and wakes up to find her life resembles a clichéd movie rom-com. Wilson appeared on “Ellen” to promote the trailer release, but she indirectly started an online controversy by claiming her movie is a Hollywood groundbreaker.
“I’m proud to be the first-ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy,” Wilson told Ellen DeGeneres.
Wilson was quickly met with backlash online for her comment, with many on social media reminding the Australian comedian of romantic-comedies starring Queen Latifah. Latifah starred opposite Common in the 2010 sports-driven rom-com “Just Wright,” and she played a woman who travels to Europe after being given a terminal medical diagnosis in the rom-rom “Last Holiday.” Wilson attempted to defend herself,...

Rebel Wilson, the first plus-sized female star of a rom-com? Fake news. The actress appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show recently to promote her new movie, Isn't It Romantic. She told Ellen DeGeneres, "I'm kind of proud to be the first-ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy." Twitter was quick to cite several examples proving otherwise. "Queen Latifah begs to differ," wrote user @kohkohbxtchzz. The star had appeared in the rom-coms Just Wright and Last Holiday. "Rebel Wilson saying she's the first plus sized girl in a rom-com like this iconic gem doesn't exist," tweeted user @florababe_,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday a record-breaking number of new member invitees that puts the organization on track to reach its 2016 goals of doubling the number of non-white and female members.
Some of the 928 invitees were quite curious, either because it was surprising they weren’t already members — or that the Academy would even think to induct them.
Consider French-born filmmaker Michel Gondry, who won an Oscar for co-writing his 2004 film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” but somehow never snagged an invite from the Academy until now.
Also Read: Oscars Academy Has Doubled Non-White Members Since 2016, on Track to Double Women Too
Or Jonathan Nolan, who earned a nomination with his brother Christopher for 2000’s “Memento,” but has been passed over all these years despite his acclaimed scripts for “The Dark Knight,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Interstellar.”
Then there’s “Harry Potter” creator J.K. Rowling.

Less than 12 hours after slicing through the Golden State Warriors to help score a major upset for his Chicago Bulls, Dwyane Wade is just as smooth navigating his way through a pack of visiting journalists in Chicago at the Bulls’ practice facility. He calls people by nicknames. He remembers small details. He’s quick with a smile and a quip. And he always stays on brand -- in this case, as one of the faces of Mission Athletecare, a high-tech sportswear brand that uses thermoregulation to dry five times faster, maximizing performance and recovery.
On the court, Wade’s resume is impeccable: a three-time NBA champion, 12-time All-Star and surefire hall of famer. The 35-year-old guard is still playing at a high level in his first season with the Bulls. And outside of basketball, Wade is one of a handful of athletes who has transcended the sports world to become a true celebrity no matter the setting...

Manny the Mammoth is back! In this Very Special Episode of Ice Age, Manny gets exasperated by the fact that his wife, Ellie, and daughter, Peaches, are independent creatures with minds of their own: “Women! I don’t get ’em!” he exclaims [insert laugh-track clip of a 1967 studio audience roaring]. Watch what happens when Manny forgets his wedding anniversary — he’s gonna be in trouble with the missus! [studio audience groans dramatically] And then there’s Peaches’ upcoming wedding to loveable doofus Julian. [studio audience: “awwwww!”] Is it the end of Manny’s world now that his little girl is officially all grown up? It just might be… what with that massive asteroid heading straight for planet Earth!

"If you're not riskin' nothin', neither will they." It looks like another solid piece of filmmaking from HBO, which isn't surprising with Pariah director Dee Rees behind the lens, and it's refreshing to dig into the blues. Watch! It was a big weekend for romantic comedies at the multiplex, with three of them entering the top 15 on the box office chart. The experts predicted that the one that would come out on top was "Don Jon," given the star power of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson, as well as a wide release in 2,422 theaters. It was expected to make $10 to $12 million, while "Baggage Claim," with no A-list stars and a 2,027-screen release, was supposed to be way behind, with $7 or $8 million. But that's not how it turned out.
In fact, when Sunday's estimates were released, "Baggage Claim" had a slight edge over "Don Jon," with $9.3 million to $9 million for "Don Jon." (The third rom-com, "Enough Said," played on just 227 screens, but it did very well, earning an estimated $2.1 million and finishing at No. 11.) That $300,000 difference is slim, and it's possible that when Monday's final numbers are released, "Don Jon...

The month of September typically serves as a transition period between the big-budget blockbusters of the Summer and the high-minded prestige fare of the Fall. As a result, September releases tend to be fairly modest, and September is consistently the lowest-grossing month of the year at the domestic box office. Even with appealing sequels Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and Insidious Chapter 2, this upcoming month will be no different. This week's Huddle is inspired by Flavorwire's list of Film's Most Awkward Couples, including Rosie O'Donnell and Dan Aykroyd in Exit to Eden. While we can agree with that weirdness as well as most of the others on their list, there are plenty of awkward pairings we can come up with, too — including some lesbian twosomes.
Dana Picolli: Papi and Kit from The L Word. What in the hell were they thinking with this one? I remember screaming "Nooooooo!" at my screen during their awkward hook up.
