For those unfamiliar with Tubi, they are a completely free streaming service which has an absolutely ridiculous selection of films, many of which offered in high quality high-definition transfers. For those not in the know, they are also one of the services that pays filmmakers the best and are very open to smaller budget films. They do present the films with ads, but that is a small price to pay for a great selection of fun films. Scrolling their offerings by genre is also the closest one can get to the video store experience of yesteryears. Here’s a list of five fun action movies on Tubi, kind of like a “Staff Suggestions” section at your local Mom & Pop video store.

With his presence in John Wick: Chapter 4, Donnie Yen is finally getting the English-language, international showcase he’s always deserved. Yen is a huge star in his motherland of China and is about to become a very bright draw for international audiences, finding himself new fans every time he’s seen in an American film. With this new one, he should no longer be “oh I know that guy from somewhere” and be quite well known as the badass that he is. To you get to know his work, here are ten of the best Donnie Yen movies (in no particular order):
Dragon (aka Wu Xia) (2011)
A big part of Yen’s career has been filled with period pieces in which martial arts have an important place (the Wuxia genre). Dragon is no different. Here, Yen plays a family man who is hiding a dark past, when this past catches up with him,...

Kung Fu Killer (aka Kung Fu Jungle)
Directed by Teddy Chang
China/Hong Kong, 2014
A homicidal martial artist, a kung fu killer if you will, is on the loose challenging the best fighters in their discipline (boxing, kicking, weapons, etc.) to prove he alone is the greatest fighter on the planet. Hahou Mo, played by the phenomenal martial arts actor Donnie Yen (whose Yuen Wu Ping collaboration, Iron Monkey, is among the greatest in kung fu cinema), is serving a prison sentence for losing his control and killing a man, and just so happens to hold the title of the greatest fighter on the planet. Upon learning of the crimes, he offers his expertise to catch the madman before he kills again.
It’s a pretty straight-forward concept, and between the acrobatics and stunt works, director Teddy Chang and star Donnie Yen offer some concerns with martial arts’ place in...

Kung Fu Killer starring Donny Yen, is the story of vicious killer Feng, who is going round Hong Kong killing top martial arts exponents, leaving a secret weapon called the Moonshadow as his calling card. When convicted killer and kung fu expert, Xia, hears of this, he offers to help the police catch the killer, in return for his freedom. Despite their misgivings, the police release the former police martial arts instructor into their custody. With his help, they realize from the chronological order of the victims that the killer is targeting his victims, all the top masters in their martial arts style, following a martial code of training. When Xia also disappears after a close encounter with Feng, they suspect the worse: that the two are accomplices and Feng was the bait to help spring Xia from jail. But Xia has actually gone back to his home in Foshan...

A martial arts instructor (Donny Yen) convicted of killing someone in a duel is released from prison by a tough as nails woman Police Lt. (Charlie Yeung) in order to help catch a serial killer, who is targeting master martial arts fighters.
A very simple setup leads to a multi themed action movie that is both old school kung fu and a post modern Valentine to the kind of action films that used to dominate Hong Kong film studios like Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest.
Kung Fu Killer is a fight filled action movie, and as you would expect the fight scenes are excellent, Donny Yen is probably the best martial arts actor in Hong Kong right now. It is also a police procedural with the Hong Kong police doing all the forensics and lead tracking and high tech surveillance we are now used to from Hollywood, European and Asian crime films.

“I know you are but what am I?”
Another great lineup of midnight movies for the ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ for June and July. It’s a typically good variety to draw the late night movie buff crowd that includes a premiere, and anime, some ‘80s standards and……Hook (!?!)
The line-up of midnight movies begins May 29th and 30th with the St. Louis premiere of the new chopsocky epic Kung Fu Killer. Cowboy Bebop: The Movie is a Japanese animated Space Western action film from 2003, so that should pack ‘em in. The Shining always does well and The Terminator should get everyone jazzed for the upcoming Terminator Genisys. The Last Starfighter and Who Framed Roger Rabbit certainly have their followings and Pee-wee’S Big Adventure just gets funnier with time. Then there’s Hook. That’s a real head-scratcher in my book, Spielberg’s worst film (why can’t...

This weekend saw the release of two solid action films from performers many fans had already written off, Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa — my review of Kung Fu Killer and Skin Trade can be found here — and inspired by this happy surprise we’re doing two things. I’m listing the twelve best movie fight scenes *and* we’re giving away five of Yen’s best movies on Blu-ray (well, technically four of his best plus Iceman)! It’s worth noting that compiling a list of the best fight scenes is a daunting goddamn task. I’m focusing on hand-to-hand fights, with or without weapons, and avoiding gun fights, war movies and the likes of Godzilla vs King Kong. For me the best fights rely mostly on a combination of skill and choreography — while fights accomplished strictly through editing or with a heavy dose of wire-fu/CG can be entertaining and a lot of fun they’re...

Let’s be honest – when it comes to martial arts movies, the action is always front and center. If you’re a director, you better be loading your film with graceful choreography, a fury of thrown fists, and plenty of flying mid-air kicks that defy the laws of gravity. We love to watch master craftsmen kicking the absolute tar out of each other. And that’s fine, because unlike gratuitously savage action flicks with bullet-ridden corpses, martial arts is all about technique, beauty, and presentation – but even with that said, some resemblance of a rich story is necessary. It can’t be all sizzle and no steak, but that’s unfortunately what happens to Teddy Chan’s latest genre attempt. Kung Fu Killer is a movie that has plenty of the aforementioned kung fu killing, as advertised, but there’s a serious lack of plotting that makes for a very one-sided experience.

Hong Kong action superstar, Donnie Yen, is back in a big way with his upcoming martial arts film, Kung Fu Killer. The film, which opened in Hong Kong under the title Kung Fu Jungle, is a great return to form for Yen, whose last few films prior to this one were a bit of a chore to say the least. Kung Fu Killer sees Yen in top form, as a martial arts master who is seeking out a kind of evil twin who is killing other masters in the hopes of becoming the number one kung fu master in Hong Kong.Kung Fu Killer has a lot going for it that Yen's most recent flops haven't. It has a tight, cohesive story with minimal flourish, it...

Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa are two of cinema’s best action stars, but both men have seen a rough few years on screen. Yen had his solid 2011 film, Wu Xia, get lost down the Weinstein Company rabbit hole and then delivered three movies in a row (Special ID, The Monkey King, Iceman) that obscured his fighting talents behind CG, wire work and costume shenanigans. Jaa meanwhile had a very public breakdown while filming 2010’s Ong Bak 3 which left him in the wind (or in the jungle according to reports) before finally returning last year with the terribly underwhelming CG-fest of The Protector 2. Neither man is in his physical prime anymore — although they could obviously still kick our collective asses — but if their latest releases are any indication they have no plans on throwing the towel in any time soon. ———————————————– Skin Trade Two cops on opposite ends of the Earth are brought together to take down...

Five grandmasters hunted by a serial killer. This actually looks way better than it sounds, so give it a look. Well Go USA has released a trailer for Kung Fu Killer, a new film starring martial arts master Donnie Yen killer and a kung fu expert, who convinces the police to recruit him to track down a serial killer in return for his freedom. Sounds like the perfect kind of plot for a cheesy martial arts movie, but it seems to be a few notches above that. Charlie Yeung, Baoqiang Wang, Bing Bai, Deep Ng and Alex Fong also star in this martial arts thriller from Hong Kong. The big skeleton set piece looks cool, and all the action gets awesome in the second half of this trailer, so don't stop watching too early. I really want to see this! Enjoy. There's a new martial arts flick coming out starring Donnie Yen...and if that sentence doesn't get you excited, then you haven't watched the incredible Ip Man movies. He's a slick martial artist and his fight scenes in movies are pretty spectacular, which you can get a hint of thanks to the first trailer for his new movie, Kung Fu Killer! Come inside to check it out!
Admittedly, being a long time martial artist myself, I'm a sucker for these kung fu movies. While realism mostly goes out the window, on the whole, they're still a lot of fun and feature great fight scenes and moves. Donnie Yen is one of the biggest names in the genre right now (though not in Hollywood circles), and there's good reason for that. In Kung Fu Killer, Ip Man star Donnie Yen plays martial arts instructor Hahou, working with the police to bring down a vicious killer targeting various kung fu masters to prove himself the greatest. Amidst a variety of situations and settings – a film studio, a dinosaur skeleton, a tattoo parlour – each fight scene is more crowd-pleasing than the last. If it all sounds like a deliriously old-school martial arts movie given a deliriously 21st century twist, there’s a good reason for that – that’s exactly what it is!

While it was a fairly slow night for horror at the "83rd Annual Academy Awards", a couple of genre flicks did manage to take home some gold, and for that we are thankful!
Rick Baker and Dave Elsey took home the coveted award for their make-up work on The Wolfman, and while the movie kind of sucked, there's no doubt that the film was home to some amazing creature effects. Now if only the powers that be would have let Baker do a proper transformation instead of that CGI hack-job we got served.
Also a winner tonight is Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, which saw an Oscar for Natalie Portman, who won for Best Actress.

Spike TV will jettison its regular schedule today and instead run a David Carradine marathon, honoring the actor who died in Bangkok last week at age 72 under odd circumstances.
Running from 2 p.m. through 3 a.m. Est/Pst time, the marathon will consist of repeat showings of both Kill Bill films, as well as one airing of the 2008 Spike TV miniseries Kung Fu Killer, which teamed Carradine with his Kill Bill co-star Daryl Hannah.
Kung Fu Killer is a rather unfortunate legacy for Carradine, but since Spike TV owns the thing -- as well as broadcast rights for Kill Bill -- it's easy to see why they'd drag it out now. Still, it's just not very good, and it's too bad that they don't have a better Carradine property that would honor him more appropriately.
Set in 1929, the flick follows an American-born monk name White Crane (Carradine) who returns to...

Still, it's just not very good, and it's too bad that they don't have a better Carradine property that would honor him more appropriately.
Set in 1929, the flick follows an American-born monk name White Crane (Carradine) who returns to...

Kill Bill star and Kung Fu legend David Carradine returns to the small screen in two feature length productions directed by Philip Spink, forgive the pun but Kung Fu fanatics will probably get a real kick out of the 72 year olds return to martial arts television, the rest of the world will just have to suffer. The show reunites Carradine with Daryl Hannah, not to mention a fine array of Eastern talent. Most notably Pei-pei Cheng of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame and the welcome return of Anya (Naked Weapon), after a near fatal car accident which has left her scarred for life. Though it has to be said the scars are barely visible now and she still looks absolutely stunning. Welcome back Anya.
