The first two episodes of Agatha All Along were all about Agatha Harkness breaking the spell that was cast on her mind by Wanda Maximoff and then setting out on a perilous journey to regain her powers. There was a sense of urgency to the quest, because Agatha’s vulnerability made her prone to attacks from all the enemies she had made in her life. Rio, her former flame, wanted to kill her immediately, but Agatha convinced her to let her get her powers back so that they could have a proper match. She couldn’t bargain with what looked like the Salem Seven, and they almost got to her when she and her coven were trying to open the door to The Witches’ Road. Fortunately, The Road showed itself in the nick of time, and Agatha, her coven, and the unnamed teen were able to disappear into an alternate dimension.

Around this time every year, I tend to enjoy putting on Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. In this household it’s as annual a hallmark of summer as warm breezes, smoking meat on the barbecue, and blasts of chlorine water. However, it is too easy to fall into the trap of thinking Spielberg had the first and last word in the sounds of shrieking at the beach.
In truth, there are many great summertime chillers that make your blood run cold, and the sand turn to ice between your toes, no matter how hot the temperature is. Hence why we here at Den of Geek have put our heads together to figure what are the absolute best beachside horror movies (other than the obvious one) that will make you a “lake person” for the rest of your life. Enjoy!

Exclusive: Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix franchise), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice) and Liana Liberato (To the Bone) have signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming feature Face, based on her 2021 bestseller, Face: One Square Foot of Skin.
The film penned by Bateman consists of 14 vignettes, both comedic and dramatic, which look at women’s faces getting older, and why that makes people angry. While much of society appears to assume that women’s faces are somehow broken and need to be fixed, Face reveals some of the many ways in which women, and those around them, allow this idea to take root at all.
Parker will play Tanya, an actress balancing her need to use her face for her job and the pressure to not move it at all, with Moss as Mrs. Foster, a kindergarten teacher whose young students remind her of the magical functionality of the face.

Next year’s Scream 6 will take the franchise into New York City for the very first time, a change of scenery that should bring a whole new element to the Ghostface killings.
Melissa Barrera is back as Sam in the next sequel in the slasher saga, and the actress has given us a little taste of what to expect in a new chat with the website Collider this week.
“It’s like 20 times more mortifying,” Barrera explains. “It’s awful. Because you also see how, in a city like New York City, everyone is kind of doing their own thing and someone is screaming for help, and no one will come to their help.”
She continues, “No one comes to help them, you know, like, everyone’s kind of like, ‘I’m not getting into that.’ So it’s mortifying, because you’re chased by Ghostface, but you also...

She continues, “No one comes to help them, you know, like, everyone’s kind of like, ‘I’m not getting into that.’ So it’s mortifying, because you’re chased by Ghostface, but you also...

Exclusive: Roadside Attractions and Vertical Entertainment have prevailed in a bidding war surrounding the Sundance thriller Emily the Criminal, starring and produced by Aubrey Plaza, claiming North American rights. They’ve slated the film for an exclusive theatrical release this year, with Redbox joining the partnership for home entertainment distribution.
John Patton Ford’s feature directorial debut follows Emily (Plaza), who is saddled with student debt and locked out of the job market due to a minor criminal record. Desperate for income, she takes a shady gig as a “dummy shopper,” buying goods with stolen credit cards supplied by a handsome and charismatic middleman named Youcef (Theo Rossi). Faced with a series of dead-end job interviews, Emily soon finds herself seduced by the quick cash and illicit thrills of black-market capitalism, and increasingly interested in her mentor Youcef. Together, they hatch a plan to bring...

The 10th Panama Int’l Film Festival wrapped Sunday, Dec. 5 with Michel Franco’s Acapulco-set drama “Sundown” closing the event.
Winners of the rough-cut sidebar Primera Mirada were announced at closing night, which took place at festival venue, La Manzana de Santa Ana. Costa Rican entries took home the top prizes this year, indicative of the tiny Central American nation’s outsized filmmaking talent.
The Primera Mirada jury, led by Diana Sánchez, Marcelo Quesada and Paula Gastaud, bestowed the top prize to Costa Rican supernatural drama “Domingo and the Mist” by Ariel Escalante who took home the $10,000 cash prize; Mauricio Morales of El Salvador won the second cash prize of $5,000 for his docu “Milo, Breaking Frontiers.”

Iff Panama’s co-production forum, the Panama Film Match, launched in 2020 in a virtual format. It’s now holding its first in-person format between Dec. 2-4 as part of the 10th Panama Intl. Film Festival (Iff Panama).
Creating a co-production forum has been a long-standing goal for Iff Panama, the highest-profile film event in Central America. The Pfm is a sister event to Iff Panama’s pix-in-post sidebar, Primera Mirada, which are already showing synergies.
One of the projects that received a special mention in last year’s edition of the Pfm, Ariel Escalante’s Costa Rican supernatural drama “Domingo and the Fog” is returning this year as one of the five films competing in Primera Mirada.
The forum is supported by the Idb Lab, the innovation laboratory of the Inter-American Development Bank Group.

Sometimes the most terrifying circumstances in fictional stories can be those situations that are rooted in reality. That’s certainly the case for the new horror film, ‘The Beach House.’ The sci-fi drama, which was conceived and shot before the outbreak of Covid-19 earlier this year, powerfully brings together a timely, atmospheric and iconic mix of […]

When I think of my favorite casts in a movie, Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead invariably comes to mind, as I love watching the interactions between Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Ty Burrell, Michael Kelly, Mekhi Phifer, and Jake Weber as much as I enjoy the fast zombie action (I'm firmly in the camp that enjoys both George A. Romero's lumbering flesh eaters and Snyder's frenetic living dead sprinters). I was especially thrilled, then, to speak with Weber about his enigmatic role in the new mind-bending sci-fi horror film The Beach House, which follows two very different couples in the midst of an otherworldly ecological transformation on the secluded seashore.
During our in-depth chat, Weber talked about what drew him to the character of Mitch in The Beach House, and he also discussed the movie's quiet sense of dread, working with first-time feature director Jeffrey A. Brown, collaborating...

Hello again, dear readers! We’re back for another look at this week’s horror and sci-fi home media releases, and there are quite a few titles headed home tomorrow. So, if you have any last-minute shopping you need to get done, there might be something listed here that could be helpful in that regard.
Probably the biggest release of this week is Arrow’s brand new 4K 2-Disc Limited Edition set celebrating one of the best monster movies ever, Tremors, and Warner is showing some love to The Curse of Frankenstein as well. In terms of recent horror, we have a ton of brilliant genre fare to pick from on Tuesday, including The Wolf of Snow Hollow, The Beach House, Don’t Look Back, and The Call, and Full Moon has resurrected Orgy of the Dead as well.

The weekend is almost upon as, and as the theatrical schedule remains a barren wasteland until at least the beginning of next year, the weekly onslaught of new VOD releases have arrived to try and entice folks who’ve run out of things to watch on the various streaming services at their disposal that they haven’t seen a handful of times already.
There are a whopping 30 titles flooding the market this weekend, but the bad news is that none of them are what would exactly be called appointment viewing. Pick of the bunch is arguably The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, which sees Francis Ford Coppola return to the closing chapter of his sprawling crime saga and deliver a brand new edit. The early reactions are that he’s greatly improved the original cut, but still not enough to see it enter the rarefied air of the first two installments,...

Shudder, the streaming service focused on horror, thrillers and the supernatural, said Tuesday it has passed the 1 million subscriber mark.
AMC Networks launched Shudder in 2015. The company has pursued a niche streaming strategy, a contrast with larger media rivals launching mass-audience services like HBO Max, Peacock and Disney+. AMC executives have projected the company will end 2020 with close to 4 million total subscribers across Shudder and streaming siblings Acorn, Umc and Sundance Now.
Another of AMC Networks’ offerings, housed in a different part of the company, is AMC+. That subscription service, formerly called AMC Premiere, brings premieres of shows ahead of their linear TV airings, ad-free viewing and other bonuses to viewers on Comcast and Dish pay-tv systems.
Original programming is always the coin of the streaming realm, Shudder’s premiere of Creepshow last September prompted a surge in customer acquisition and engagement, the company said. A second season is in production.

It is a rare occurrence to find a movie that speaks so clearly to its current moment like “The Beach House,” despite being filmed months before Covid-19 ravaged our lives, homes, and beaches. Part Lovecraft and part virus flick, it fits right into the category of movies such as “Long Weekend,” “The Mist,” and “The Last Winter,” where small groups of people meet an extinction event that can’t be stopped.

This week, Shudder welcomed another stellar indie horror film to its ranks, The Beach House from writer/director Jeffrey A. Brown. Starring Liana Liberato, Noah Le Gros, Jake Weber, and Maryann Nagel, The Beach House is centered around two couples who happen to end up staying at the same seaside vacation home for a weekend. What starts out innocently enough as a cozy dinner with great conversation morphs into a living nightmare as the quartet of characters find themselves contending with a cosmic horror they cannot possibly begin to understand.
Earlier this week, Daily Dead spoke with Brown about The Beach House, and he discussed the inspiration behind the setting of his debut feature film, his approach to working with his cast and crew, and more.
Be sure to check out The Beach House now that it’s streaming exclusively on Shudder.

The Beach House (Jeffrey A. Brown)
There’s a lot to like about Jeffrey A. Brown’s feature directorial debut The Beach House, from its gorgeous production design to its ruminations on mankind’s fragility when compared with Mother Nature’s hardier offerings (despite our penchant for believing we hold dominion over Her). It’s therefore easy to appreciate the reason Emily (Liana Liberato), Randall (Noah Le Gros), Mitch (Jake Weber), and Jane (Maryanne Nagel) have arrived at a site that may end up being their tomb because we’re quick to ignore the baked-in irony too. This was supposed to be an escape from life’s struggles—a...

Contained horror has an added bit of resonance right now. After all, many of us are still essentially stuck in our homes. Moreover, eco-horror is rather under-explored as a sub-genre of fright flicks. So, The Beach House enters with a few things in its favor. However, the genre offering, debuting on the streaming platform Shudder today, shows too much restraint for its own good. There are ideas and scares, to be sure, but the balance is off. What should be foreboding and tense instead just becomes relatively boring. The periodic effectiveness of the concept, as well as the lead performance from Liana Liberato, is drowned in poor pacing and an inability to keep the viewer’s attention. The movie is a horror offering, seeing a small group of people deal with a truly nefarious infection. When Emily (Liberato) and Randall (Noah Le Gros) arrive at his father’s beach house,...

Being released during an epidemic lends additional if unintended frisson to “The Beach House,” a cryptic yet reasonably involving thriller in which vacationers find themselves under threat. The nature of that threat remains ambiguous, but in its partially-airborne inescapability, it definitely hits a note of creepy relevance. Writer-director Jeffrey A. Brown’s first feature is neither fish nor fowl in terms of fitting snugly into any given genre slot — perhaps it’s . In any case, it’s skillful enough to satisfy most viewers, if not quite sufficiently original in concept or striking in execution to leave a lasting imprint. It premieres July 9 on AMC’s streaming imprint Shudder.

Not the most horrific of horror movie titles but The Beach House features two college sweethearts on a getaway to the sea and the aforementioned beach house. Shortly after their arrival they come across some unexpected guests and an environment that doesn’t seem to want them their.
The Beach House somehow manages to feel very familiar, even to the pint that if features quite a few horror clichés, but still highly original too. It ‘borrows’ ideas from some horror and sci-fi classics but brings plenty of its own aswell, which many of the best movies do.
It’s a classic slow-burn style with the first half of the film just introducing its characters (only four ‘proper’ in total) and then setting up...

And the Sea Will Kill: Brown’s Blends Menace with Familiar Tropes in Eco-Horror Debut
Horror films have often benefitted from man vs. nature themes, and we’re decades removed from the genre’s drifting from socio-political metaphor to environmental alarms, where our taken-for-granted control erodes when nature claps back. The ocean, and all its mysterious, unexplored wonders, remains a formidable tool for both known and unknown perils, which Jeffrey A. Brown utilizes in his straightforward but enjoyable debut, The Beach House. Albeit an indie quartet which doesn’t allow for much by way of surprise, it’s an eco-horror film which perfectly blends its creature feature fascinations with formidable dread, resembling something akin to golden era Stephen King, Bradbury or even Lovecraft with its aquatic lurkers at the threshold.…...
Horror films have often benefitted from man vs. nature themes, and we’re decades removed from the genre’s drifting from socio-political metaphor to environmental alarms, where our taken-for-granted control erodes when nature claps back. Even as the majority of theaters are closed, with films like Relic and The Beach House arriving this month, it’s a good time to be a horror film this summer. Later in July we’ll be getting another genre scare, courtesy of Amulet, the directorial debut from Romola Garai, who has appeared in Atonement, Suffragette, and more.
Premiering earlier this year at Sundance, the film follows a former soldier who moves into a house with a woman taking care of her dying mother, who lives upstairs. As seen in the unsettling first trailer, things do not go as planned as the ailing woman has sinister secrets of her own.

So when the opposite proves true, we understand the fear that inevitably takes over.
The reason is simple: that fear is never far from our minds. What occurs to...
