Michèle Leblanc, glamorous entrepreneur of a successful video game company, is the calm at the center of many storms. Her son’s girlfriend has given birth to another man’s child, an employee is stalking her with anime porn and her botox-ridden mother is betrothed to a male prostitute.

In the face of all this outrageous fortune, Michèle remains cool, calm and collected, even in the aftermath of her own harrowing sexual assault.

Elle, the new film from the Dutch provocateur Paul Verhoeven, begins with that already infamous assault, our heroine struggling under the weight of her attacker while an unblinking cat perches nearby, watching.

Pretty subtle title, huh? Produced in Italy as Il Boa Scarlatto, this lurid gorefest also goes by The Crimson Executioner, A Tale of Torture, and Some Virgins for the Hangman, among other titles. Campy, sadistic Eurotrash that played off in the Us paired with another retitled Neapolitan thriller, Terror-Creatures from Beyond the Grave. They don’t make ’em like these anymore. There’s a fundamental problem with a film that eschews internal coherency for existential pondering. Such is the state of affairs with Porto dos Mortos, a 2010 Brazilian horror effort. The film starts off yearning to be existentially important and finishes hoping that it has proven that it is an existentially great film. Most cinephiles will tell you that the existentially great films are great not because of their willingness to be existential but because of their willingness to simply be. Films that feature zombies can be quite interesting, they tend to have different styles based on which part of the world they are based in. Beyond the Grave is a zombie film originating in Brazil and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro and he creates a film where zombies are in ways nothing more than a background menace to the main plot, which itself is more interesting than the average story of the undead.

For their seventh annual edition, the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival is really blowing things up!

Well, not literally. But the world’s premiere horror movie fest is expanding to over double its regular size, screening over 50 films on nine terrifying nights Oct. 10-18 at its new home, the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The scares kick off on the 10th with the return of local fave filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr. with the feature-length version of Excision about a teenage girl obsessed with becoming a surgeon. The film co-stars John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Traci Lords. Bates’ original short Excision on which the feature is based screened at Spooky Movie back in 2008.

The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.

The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.

Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

The seventh annual Montreal Underground Film Festival features four nights — and one matinee — of experimental short films from all over the world, plus two feature films. The fun takes place May 17-20 with the opening night event being held at Sala Rossa before the rest of the fest moves to Peut-être Vintage.

The opening batch of short films includes Winnipeg filmmaker Aaron Zeghers‘ The Story of Thomas Edison, plus films by fellow Winnipegger Scott Fitzpatrick, Simon Lacroix, Erin Weisgerber, Charles Fairbanks and many more.

It was in 2008 when we first heard about Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro's Beyond the Grave (Porto Dos Mortos), but things appear to be back on track for the Brazilian film as it's screening at the Chicago Latino Film Festival on April 21st and 26th.

Written and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro (who also produced with Isidoro B. Guggiana), Beyond the Grave follows the unstoppable hunt of a vengeful cop (Rafael Tombini) for a supernatural serial killer. In its film festival circuit the Brazilian fantasy feature gained international acclaim, being also selected for the Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano (Cuba), and won two awards: Best Horror Feature Award at the Arizona Underground Film Festival and Audience Choice Award for Best Latin American Feature at Montevideo Fantástico (Uruguay).

Portos dos Mortos or Beyond the Grave is currently making the rounds on the film festival circuits in North America. A more accurate translation of the Portuegese title is Portals of the Dead and this film is from Brazilian director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro. Pinheiro has developed a suitable action thriller here set in a zombie apocalypse. The desolate locales and makeup effects highlight the apocalypse, while a western genred film tries to develop in the character's dress and armaments. The characters are what made this film interesting to one reviewer and fans of indie zombie fiction should seek this film out.

The Arizona Underground Film Festival wrapped up its 3rd and biggest year ever back on Sept. 25. Over a wild eight days, the fest screened 30 feature films and 50 short films from all over the world, some of them making their world premiere or their U.S. debut. Out of those films, Auff handed out a dozen awards.

Auff gave out awards to both shorts and features in the categories of Best Narrative, Best Horror, Best Documentary. Plus, they gave out awards such as Best Exploitation, Best Experimental, Audience Award, Director’s Choice and more.

Best Experimental went to a film directed nearly 30 years ago that’s just being seen now. That film is Window on Your Present by Cinqué Lee, brother of Spike Lee.

The Arizona Underground Film Festival has just revealed the names of six feature films chosen to screen at its third annual edition that will run on Sept. 18 to 25 in Tucson and Tempe, Az. The selections are an exciting mix of genre-bending films from all over the world, several of which are making their North American and World Premieres.

Azuff began as a modest three-day affair back in 2008 and has now grown into a full-blown eight-day affair in 2010. The sampling of titles that have been announced are a good sampling of the overall tone of the fest. The films range from black comedy to western to horror to one of the most controversial films of the year, A Serbian Film. Countries that some of the other films come from include Germany and Brazil.

Listed below are the six titles that have been announced so far and the full lineup will be released on Sept.

The Soul Detective is the fifth and last episode from Brazilian web series Boundaries of Thought: Think Tank. It was written and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro, whose post-apocalyptic thriller Beyond the Grave we're very much looking forward to. Concerning a murder, a train car, supernatural forces and a detective in a classic black and white 60s cut mod suit, the short is very reminiscent of the general vibe of Twin Peaks which is perhaps why I'm not totally surprised to see David Lynch make an appearance.

A detective enters a train car were he finds different manifestations of a force that haunts the place. Using his telepathic powers he tries to enter the mind of a recently deceased man before all his memories vanish.

The Video Player Top Ten arrives a day late this week, but still chock full of goodness. We’ve been tracking the progress of Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Brazilian zombie picture Beyond the Grave for a good while now, and why not? When you’ve got the same effects crew doing your make up as handled the latest from the legendary Coffin Joe and are citing the likes of Jodorowsky and Sergio Leone as key visual influences there is lots of reason for hope. Well, the full trailer for the film has just arrived and while it definitely shows it’s budget limits a little bit this thing looks like some bloodily impressive stuff. Not content to do ‘just another zombie movie’ Pinheiro builds his film around a cop tracking a serial killer in a world that just happens to be in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. And those visual influences? The Leone is definitely there and I see a lot of Dick Tracy style...

In a nice break from the Comic Con madness we’ve been embroiled in for the past week or so, Brazilian filmmaker Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro just sent out a heads up that the first trailer for his film Beyond the Grave is now up on the flick’s official site.

Along with that cool bit of info, he sent over four new pics from the film as well. Since it’s been a while since we’ve talked about Beyond the Grave, allow me to refresh your memory: The film follows a vengeance-filled cop as he tracks down the supernatural serial killer known as Adam though a dystopic Brazilian landscape.

“This is not a zombie or serial killer film,” Pinheiro says, ”but a reaction to the recent production as well as to my own preconceptions of what the movie should be. It’s a violent and emotional experience, mixing possession,...

Lockheart Filmes, in association with V2 Cinema, is at work on the set of Brazilian horror-fantasy feature Beyond The Grave (aka Porto Dos Mortos) since February 14. Writer and director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro (who's also producing with Isidoro B. Guggiana) and crew are currently filming in the city of Porto Alegre. The principal photography is expected to end March 4. "Beyond The Grave is gradually becoming organic as a movie should be. Now it has its own life. It's very much alive", says the director. A team of forty professionals is working to bring the film to its full form. You can check out the first four pics inside and more from the director.
