One of the questions that reality TV fans might be wondering is the comparisons and differences between the American version and the international versions of reality shows.

There has been a debate on which version might be superior. While the formats are pretty much the same, there are differences in how they are produced and the style of storytelling of the dramatic stakes.

How is the International Reality TV Shows Different from the American Versions?

For the most part, the mechanics in either the American version or international versions of the reality shows are similar and there are no drastic changes beyond the main conceit.

However, there are still some major differences between them including the runtime. American versions tend to have their episodes air for an hour weekly while the international versions have a lengthy runtime for each episode.

Sofia Vergara needs no introduction. The actress, who holds the record for the highest paid woman on US television, has become a household name.

Hulu will continue to be the U.S. streaming home for Fox’s “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” “The Masked Singer” and other shows for at least the next four years.

Fox Corp.’s Fox Entertainment and Disney’s Hulu announced a multiyear renewal of their content partnership, encompassing in-season streaming rights for Fox’s programming slate. The agreement also includes the extension of the marketing alliance the two companies forged in January 2023, under which Fox and Hulu branding jointly share presence across all Fox-owned and external consumer touchpoints “to align with live and on-demand viewing messaging of Fox content.”

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The deal renewal runs for a four-year term, sources said.

Fox Corp. does not operate its own subscription streaming service and has leaned on its Hulu partnership to monetize content in the subscription VOD space. Separately, Fox operates Tubi, a free, ad-supported streamer.

Fox Entertainment is extending its streaming partnership with Hulu for multiple years. Under this agreement, new episodes and seasons of Fox Entertainment shows like “The Masked Singer” and “The Simpsons” will continue to be available to stream on Hulu the day after their linear telecasts.

This deal also includes an extension of the two brands’ marketing alliance, which was first established in 2023. That aspect of the deal stipulates that Fox and Hulu share joint branding across all Fox-owned and external consumer points of contact.

Last week, CBS unveiled its midseason schedule, and now Fox has followed suit with a slate of news that’s bound to delight some fans and infuriate others.

First, the good news: Hell’s Kitchen will return on January 2, followed by the debut of Animal Control Season 3, and the series premiere of the new Denis Leary comedy Going Dutch.

The following day brings the return of Kitchen Nightmares, along with the series premiere of the new medical drama Doc.

We’ll have to wait until January 20 for more returning shows, as 9-1-1 Lone Star and Rescue: Hi-Surf both resume their seasons in their usual time slots.

For Lone Star, the return will be a short-lived one. Fox announced today that the series will come to an end on February 3.

Fox has changed up its post-Super Bowl plans.

The network will the season three premiere of its game show The Floor after Super Bowl Lix on Feb. 9, giving the Rob Lowe-hosted series the biggest possible U.S. audience to kick off its next installment. The Floor replaces first-year drama Rescue: Hi-Surf, which Fox announced would have the post-Super Bowl showcase when the network unveiled its 2024-25 slate in May.

Rescue: Hi-Surf will likely still get heavy promotion during the Super Bowl (as it did during the World Series), and what the network is billing as “a special episode” of the series is set to run the day after the NFL title game, Feb. 10.

Fox has also set the rest of its midseason debuts. The third season of Animal Control will premiere Jan. 2, pairing with the Denis Leary-led comedy Going Dutch on Thursday nights. Medical drama Doc is set to premiere Jan.

Fox is the third broadcast network (following ABC and CBS) to unveil its midseason game plan, and it includes a timetable for the cancelled 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s series finale, a rethink on what’s airing after Super Bowl 59, and a return date for Joel McHale’s Animal Control.

Conspicuously missing from Fox’s early 2025 offerings, meanwhile, are return dates for The Cleaning Lady, Family Guy and Alert: Missing Persons Unit — though TVLine has been assured that all three are on track for springtime season premieres.

Kitchen Nightmares Tackles Super Bowl Lix: Can Gordon Ramsay Save New Orleans’ Restaurants Before the Big Game?...

Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares is heading to New Orleans and the Super Bowl. In a bit of corporate synergy, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares: Road to Super Bowl Lix is set to premiere with a two-hour episode on Wednesday, January 1 at 8 p.m. on Fox. It will be followed with regular episodes airing on Wednesdays from 8-9 p.m. beginning January 8.

The first half of the season is set in New Orleans, the home of Super Bowl Lix, which will be broadcast on Fox. It will air weekly leading up to the big game, with in-episode countdowns by Ramsay and appearances by current and former NFL stars. The season will also provide an opportunity for the New Orleans-based restaurants, who under Ramsay’s guidance, will have the chance to be reinvigorated and running prior to the biggest sports weekend of the year. “Hell’s Kitchen” celebrates its milestone 350th episode on Fox Wednesday, October 24. In its 23rd season, the cooking competition led by Chef Gordon Ramsay has become a staple of reality TV and launched the foul-mouthed culinary powerhouse into superstar status.

Ramsay was first introduced to American audiences when “Hell’s Kitchen” premiered in May 2005. The film tells the story of how “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker worked to save beloved Colorado-based Mexican restaurant Casa Bonita, which was immortalized in a classic episode of their animated show.

“¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” will have its streaming debut on Paramount+ Wednesday, October 2 in the United States. The film has had a very limited theatrical run, but it has performed exceptionally well for a documentary, bringing in just shy of $125,000. “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” has been one of the highest-grossing documentaries of the year.

IndieWire previously reported that after the film played on just a single screen in Denver, it had already achieved the highest per-screen average for any documentary film released theatrically in 2024.

Exclusive: A new indie collective is out of the gate with four labels on board and discussions underway with others. Thirtyfour Media is the brainchild of former Banijay exec Joris Gijsbertse who told Deadline he has been working on the project for over a year.

The idea is Thirtyfour will act as a hub for indie prodcos and provide centralized support across development, production and distribution. Another key offering to the partner labels will be in the realm of format and IP acquisitions, with Gijsbertse providing intel and counsel.

Ideas can travel between the labels in the group, which is why the plan is to limit the Thirtyfour family to one company per territory. The initial focus will be on unscripted content and formats.

The quartet of companies on board at launch include Constantin Entertainment in Germany, which makes shows locally including Lol, and NewBe in Holland, whose local credits include Singletown.

Documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” takes the animated fandom of the dining establishment Casa Bonita and uses it to revitalize the real-life eatery. Described as the “Disneyland of Mexican restaurants,” Casa Bonita opened in 1974 in a Colorado strip mall. The infamous restaurant was featured in a classic 2003 episode of “South Park,” which IndieWire called the best episode of “South Park” ever, and in the 2017 video game “South Park: The Fractured but Whole.”

Series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone later stepped up to save Casa Bonita after learning that the restaurant was on the verge of bankruptcy. With $40 million, the eatery was restored. Their journey to reopen Casa Bonita in May 2023 was captured in documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!,” which premiered at Tribeca 2024, where it won the Audience Award. A restaurant that was the subject of Kitchen Nightmares sued Gordon Ramsay. The actual episode was released more than a decade ago. However, thanks to a video promo released on Facebook, the restaurant sued Ramsay for making them look bad.

A New Orleans restaurant sued Gordon Ramsay for an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. The restaurant is called Oceana Grill and it didn’t just sue Ramsay once. It sued him twice. The episode was even removed from streaming and YouTube thanks to problems

The episode remains famous because it showed Ramsay throwing up based on what he found. He also found three dead mice in the restaurant during the episode. However, the company that owns Oceana Grill said, “None of the above-described events were real, but were contrived and orchestrated by defendants to manufacture drama for their show.

A ‘market with a view’ is how Nem Dubrovnik pitches itself. In a literal sense, the view is of the Adriatic Sea, but in a business sense, the ambition is to create a relaxed setting for execs to meet and do deals, a marked switch-up from the hubbub of many TV markets.

Launching in 2013, Nem Dubrovnik has carved out its calendar moment in June. Over a decade, it has established itself as a key buying and selling confab for the Cee region and beyond, with all of the notable buyers in attendance. The market organizers will grow the space for distributors by 40% this year.

Amazon MGM, Disney, Idtv and Lionsgate will have screenings or showcases. Beta Film, Newen Studios, Rai, and Warner Bros. Discovery are among the big European and international players that will be selling programming at Nem.

Content production and licensing company FilmRise has elevated Jonitha Keymoore to serve as its new Head of Content.

In the new role, Keymoore will oversee all content licensing and production activities involving the FilmRise network of free, ad-supported (Fast) linear content channels and apps, and coordinate the same with FilmRise’s streaming-focused partners and stakeholders.

“From the moment Jonitha joined our team at FilmRise three years ago, her impact has been extraordinary,” said FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher. “Her dedication, insights, and work ethic have made her a cornerstone of the company. Keymoore joined FilmRise in 2021 after serving in a senior role with Paramount Global. At Paramount, she was tasked with securing licensing deals for content across the company’s cable and digital networks.

The sixth annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards nominations were unveiled, and MTV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race and Peacock’s The Traitors lead the pack.

Both competition series coincide in the Best Competition Series and Best Ensemble Cast in an Unscripted Series categories. RuPaul and Alan Cumming will vie for Best Show Host and Male Star of the Year for their respective shows.

Drag Race also scored a nod in the Best Lifestyle Show: Fashion/Beauty category, while The Traitors star Phaedra Parks picked up a Female Star of the Year nom.

MTV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race and Peacock’s The Traitors lead the nominations for the sixth annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, with five apiece.

Both series will vie for best competition series, best ensemble cast in an unscripted series, best show host (RuPaul and Alan Cumming) and male star of the year (RuPaul and Cumming, again). Drag Race also is up for best lifestyle show: fashion/beauty, while Traitors‘ Phaedra Parks earned a nom for female star of the year.

Also up for best show host are Will Arnett (Lego Masters), Terry Crews (America’s Got Talent), Kristen Kish (Top Chef) and Keke Palmer (Password).

Male star of the year nominees also include Jerrod Carmichael (Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show), Bertie Gregory (Animals Up Close With Bertie Gregory), Eugene Levy (The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy) and Gerry Turner (The Golden Bachelor).

Fox is moving “Family Guy” to midseason, marking the first time the animated staple hasn’t been on the network’s fall schedule since 2005 (when it returned to the air after being canceled for a few years). That’s one of the major shifts to come this fall as Fox announced a 2024-2025 lineup that includes two new dramas and a new animated series in the fall, with more freshman launches to come in midseason.

New dramas include lifeguard actioner “Rescue: Hi-Surf,” from executive producer John Wells, which will air Mondays at 9 p.m. Et behind “9-1-1: Lone Star” and crime procedural “Murder in a Small Town,” which will run Tuesdays at 9 p.m., paired with Season 2 of anthology series “Accused.” Later in the season will premiere medical drama “Doc,” based on the Italian series “Doc — Nelle tue mani” and starring Molly Parker.

Fox and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay want to take a bigger bite of the digital advertising business.

The broadcast network and Ramsay’s Studio Ramsay Global are teaming up to launch a digital food and entertainment brand called “Bite.” The new venture will include original digital content, live events, consumer products and other food-based offerings.

The content, which will live on the Bite Digital Network, will include a digital spinoff of Next Level Chef called Next Level Kitchen; a culinary competition series called Idiot Sandwich; and a Bite Digital Originals banner that will highlight up and coming culinary talent.

The plan is to also add a library of Ramsay’s recipes, making them more accessible than ever before.

Bite is also a digital advertising play, with Fox touting “unrivaled access to this diverse community of food entertainment fans and creators through a broad array of brand-safe, immersive and authentic media and sponsorship packages,...

The CW Network launched its first free, ad-supported television channel this week — a stream dedicated to one of its original programs.

The channel offers a marathon of the CW Network original “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” and is available to stream via the CW Network website.

Earlier this year, the CW Network soft-launched a new free, ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) platform on its website, which includes around four dozen streaming channels operated by the E. W. Scripps Company, FilmRise, Lionsgate and other programmers.

In addition to Penn & Teller: Fool Us, the CW Network website includes Fast channels like Game Show Central, Ion Plus, Laff More, Grit Xtra, Scream Factory TV, Ebony TV, Bounce Xl and Love Nature, along with marathon channels showing re-runs of the Carol Burnett Show,...

Exclusive: Fox is firing up another season of Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars and is moving filming from California to the UK in order that the host can explore new territories.

The Apprentice-style series from the chef’s Studio Ramsay Global will continue to feature U.S. contestants but this time be filmed across Ramsay’s native Britain. The show originated in the UK on the BBC but that version was axed last year after two series. An Australian version is due to launch shortly on Network Nine.

Food Stars sees food and beverage industry professionals put through a multitude of challenges designed to showcase their skills, as Ramsay searches for the next great culinary entrepreneur. Each week, one person gets eliminated, and the winner is eventually handed a hefty angel investment.

American media mogul Jeff Zucker has acquired a London-based content production company operated in part by his former employer.

On Saturday, Zucker’s RedBird Capital Partners in partnership with Abu Dhabi’s International Media Investments (Imi) announced the acquisition of All3 Media from Liberty Global and Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) for £1.15 billion (around U.S. $1.45 billion). Zucker previously served as the president of CNN, the international cable network owned by Wbd.

“All3 Media is one of the world’s greatest content companies, and this gives us an incredible platform to continue to grow our expanding portfolio,” Zucker said in a statement. “The demand for new shows and ongoing existing series, both scripted and unscripted, makes All3 a perfect fit for us.”

Exclusive: Fox, along with the rest of the broadcasters, is breathing a sigh of relief that new scripted programming will return for the second half of the 2023-2024 TV season. But, while difficult, the fall season wasn’t all bad.

To fill the airtime, Fox leaned on adult animation and unscripted programming — both of which put up positive numbers for the network. New series like Krapopolis put up promising numbers, while the return of Kitchen Nightmares and a second season of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test helped keep ratings steady this season.
