Fran starts dating Gary Isaacs, the handsome new cantor at Sylvia's temple. On a chance meeting with Burt Bacharach at the Sheffield household at which Gary wows Bacharach with his singing, Maxwell and C.C. hire Gary as a performer for their new Bacharach penned musical. Gary credits Fran for changing his life, this change which includes leaving his position as cantor at the temple for good. This announcement puts Sylvia and Fran in the temple's bad books, but more importantly in what they believe God's bad books. Fran tries to talk Maxwell into reneging on his contract with Gary, however Maxwell goes in the other direction by promoting Gary to star of the show when an accident sidelines the original lead actor. But the temple, Fran and Maxwell are all eventually left out in the cold when Gary gets a more lucrative job offer in a Hollywood movie. But Fran still has to make restitution to God before life between the Fines and the Jewish religion get back to normal.
