Being in the movie industry comes with a risk of being overthrown by other actors who star in bigger projects, and there is a slight fear that Chris Evans might be wasting his potential on films that barely help him showcase what he’s capable of. Evans, who turned 43 earlier this year hasn’t had too many of his recent movies get much recognition, specifically, the ones done outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Before things get worse, the Avengers: Endgame superstar needs to start taking on roles that will bring his name back to relevance. Even if the movie roles don’t come his way, Evans could possibly take up an opportunity that his dear friend, Sebastian Stan has offered.

Friendship Day is on the horizon and in the midst of that, there are several celebrities in Hollywood who have wide and long standing friendships. Some of these friendships are a bit unorthodox, because one wouldn’t think that this person would in fact be friends with the other. But as they say, friendship knows no bounds.

Scarlett Johansson, whose long-awaited solo Marvel movie Black Widow finally hits theaters and Disney+ next month, is being feted this fall as the 35th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. After going with a virtual presentation last year for 2020 honoree Spike Lee, the organization’s marquee event returns to normalcy, with its November 18 ceremony taking place at the Beverly Hilton where it was held last in 2019, when Charlize Theron was the recipient.
The event is an annual fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that continues its year-round programming at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica and Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

We chat about their new movie Things Heard & Seen (now available on Netflix), then dive back into their eclectic, accomplished career. From the serendipitous way they came to make the doc Off the Menu: The Last Days of Chasen’s to the unintentional development of the underrated The Extra Man, starring Kevin Kline and Paul Dano. It was 18 years ago — how time flies in the indie world — that the married directing team of Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman brought us “American Splendor,” an achingly humane, scabrously funny, miraculously playful and inventive lower-depths comedy based on the life and work of the lumpen verité comic-book diarist Harvey Pekar, played by Paul Giamatti in a performance of irascible brilliance. The movie was an audacious triumph, and going forward one wanted, and expected, more great things from Pulcini and Berman. In the years since, however, nothing they’ve done has come within miles of living up to the promise of that landmark film. The odd thing is that their earnest empathy and craft is always on display; they have an instinct for pace, for camera angles, for how to seek out three dimensions in places where too many filmmakers settle for two. Yet lightning has never struck again for them.

Richard Gladstein, who has served as dean of the American Film Institute’s AFI Conservatory for the past 18 months, is exiting his post, the organization said Monday. The graduate film school’s Michael Chung, Vice Dean of Administration, and Tom Engfer, Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, have been appointed Co-Interim Deans. Both will report to AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale.
AFI, which just wrapped its AFI Fest 2018 last week, said a search for a permanent replacement is underway. Gladstein said that in AFI’s announcement today he was moving “on to new opportunities” but offered no other details. He had been in the post one academic year.
Said Gazzale: “We appreciate Richard’s contributions to the Conservatory, and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Scarlett Johansson’s Best Comedic Performances: 5 Moments That Put Her ‘Rough Night’ Role In Context
Scarlett Johansson is no stranger to the world of comedy — she is a member of the so-called Five-Timers Club, an enviable group of stars who have hosted “Saturday Night Live” at least five times — and she’s managed to emerge as an unexpected comedic Mvp without ever toplining an outright comedy. Some 20 years into her career, Johansson has yet to star in a raunchy knee-slapper that takes full advantages of her more light-leaning chops…until now. This week, that changes with the release of “Rough Night.”
An unabashedly female-centric comedy in the vein of “Bridesmaids” and “Bachelorette,” the new film from “Broad City” regulars Lucia Aniello (who makes her feature directorial debut with the film) and Paul W. Downs (who wrote it alongside Aniello and also co-stars) casts Johansson in a lead role alongside a strong ensemble of other (also very funny) women, including Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer,...

Taking a break from playing Disney sidekicks, Josh Gad will add his interpretation of Truman Capote to the cinematic canon in the upcoming film Party Of The Century, about the author’s famous Black And White Ball. According to a release, the story is not entirely centered on Capote—instead, it focuses on the romance between a fictional starlet played by Chloë Grace Moretz and Jack O’Connell’s elevator operator. So it’s more in the vein of a Me And Orson Welles or My Week With Marilyn-type project about people who have brushes with legends.

With shooting scheduled to start in November, co-writer/director Ed Zwick is locking in the elements he needs for Jack Reacher 2. He now has Patrick Heusinger in talks to play the film’s villain. Zwick has been developing the sequel to Christopher McQuarrie’s film based on Lee Child’s book series. He and usual co-writer Marshall Herskovitz honed a Richard Wenk draft of the script adapted from Never Go Back, which finds Reacher (played once again by Tom Cruise) travelling from South Dakota to his old military base in Virginia, to be charged with a violent incident and faced with a paternity case, neither of which transgression he remembers. Heusinger joins Aldis Hodge, Danika Yarosh and Cobie Smulders in the likely list of Cruise co-stars, assuming all of their deals close. He’s been seen in such films as Frances Ha, Black Swan and The Nanny Diaries and...

New York I Love You: Berman & Pulcini’s Schmaltz Soaked Latest
Nostalgia, especially in large doses, tends to hobble the authenticity of a text, whether in the literary or cinematic realm. On a superficial level, serving as a love letter to a bygone era of 1980s New York, Eleanor Hendricks’ novel Ten Thousand Saints falls under the quirky spigot of directing duo Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the team behind the Oscar nominated American Splendor from 2003. In the decade since that critically championed title, they’ve continued with a particular strain of fluffy cornball items. Following a brief assay into studio filmmaking with The Nanny Diaries (2007), they were responsible for a pair of sickly sweet titles headlined by prized performers like Kevin Kline in The Extra Man (2010) and Kristen Wiig in Girl Most Likely (2012). Though their latest venture is slightly more sobering, at least in a notable absence of...

Over the course of his career, Chris Evans has become a familiar face to film fans for roles in a variety of genres, including a comedic performance in Not Another Teen Movie, a dramatic turn in Snowpiercer, a romantic lead in The Nanny Diaries, and most notably as Captain America across several Marvel films, including two standalone features focused on his character. His upcoming feature, however, sees Evans take on a new role; that of a director, as he steps behind the camera for the first time in his career. Titled Before We Go, the synopsis of the film is as follows.
A woman misses the 1:30 train from New York to Boston and a street musician spends the night trying to help her make it back home before her husband does. Throughout the night they learn a lot about one another and eventually find a romance.

"I'm offering you Manhattan champ, don't play hard to get." Screen Media has debuted an official trailer for Ten Thousand Saints, from writers/directors Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini (of American Splendor, The Nanny Diaries, Girl Most Likely), starring Ethan Hawke and Asa Butterfield. Hawke plays an estranged father who suddenly "kidnaps" his emo-punk son and takes him to New York City, where he experiences a whole coming-of-age on the streets of Manhattan with new friends. The film is set in the 80's around the punk rock scene and it seems to have a killer soundtrack, of which many of the reviews quoted rave about. Hailee Steinfeld also stars along with Emile Hirsch and Emily Mortimer. They give away a lot (too much) in this trailer, but it actually looks pretty good. "Have you ever heard of punk?" The trailer for Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini's Ten Thousand Saints,...

Who can forget 2003 when filmmaker-duo Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini landed at Sundance with a highly inventive biopic, a seminal film really in the indie film cannon. Featuring the debatably unlikeable Clevelander Harvey Pekar, American Splendor moved put the pair on a pedestal, and while they’ve been back to Sundance for The Extra Man (’10), they’ve pretty much stuck to commercial indie items in The Nanny Diaries (07), Cinema Verite – HBO ’11, and Girl Most Likely (aka Imogene) ’12. Starring Asa Butterfield, Ethan Hawke, Hailee Steinfeld, Emile Hirsch, Emily Mortimer and Julianne Nicholson, production began way back at the end of January on Ten Thousand Saints, which comes with a built-in fanbase due to the novel on which it is based on. Should be a high value sales item if included.

So we all saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier. (Seriously, we all saw it.) And we’ve all had a good, long, thoughtful conversation about the deeper themes lingering under the surface of the paranoia-inducing, wiki-leaking, surveillance-state-exploding superhero sequel. But there’s a more obvious thing we need to address — a question hovering over the whole movie that remains unanswered. Captain America. Black Widow. Question mark?
To recap, with spoilers. At the start of Winter Soldier, Cap and Widow’s relationship has evolved a little since The Avengers. But only a little. They’re co-workers. Widow’s mildly concerned that...

In The Americans, there is no character more satisfied than Martha, the feisty FBI secretary who has no clue she’s in a sham marriage. As far as Martha's concerned, she’s got a great job, a great apartment, and even though her husband Clark — a.k.a. undercover Kgb agent Philip — may not be around much, last night’s episode confirmed he makes their time together in the bedroom count. The question is, how long can Martha last now that she’s threatening to get a new job less useful to Philip’s Russian intel needs? Vulture talked to British actress Alison Wright (The Nanny Diaries), who plays Martha, about being TV’s happiest and saddest character, and why Clark’s incredible sexual prowess totally explains the wig thing. Now that Martha has confirmed that Clark is an “animal” in bed, do you have any theories as to how...

Despite two remarkable new films, attention has shifted away from the actress's luminous career to her political beliefs as she becomes embroiled in a controversy over the boycott of Israeli goods
It is usually the case that studios, agents and distributors will co-ordinate release dates to capitalise on a star's popularity, but it is rare that an A-list actress will be headlining two remarkable new films and an international political controversy all at the same time. That's not your run-of-the-mill Hollywood career, but then Scarlett Johansson is no common-or-garden star.

In the current era of The Avengers and Batman Vs. Superman, it’s impossible to be a fan of the comic-book genre and not have a well-considered argument to the question, “Who’s the Most Powerful Superhero?” Superman, of course, is the most obvious answer in any superpower battle-royale debate, but there are strong and more interesting claims to be made for the others, too. (Except Hawkeye. Sorry, guy.)

In 2011's "Bridesmaids," former 'SNL' star Kristen Wiig crafted the perfect vehicle for her comedic talents. The screenplay (which she co-wrote with fellow Groundling Annie Mumolo) allowed the comedienne to display her comedy chops and also flex some previously unseen dramatic muscles. Her character in the film was kind of a screw up who blamed others for her problems and for all the film's broader moments, there was still a core of emotional truth. In the year since that film's runaway success the actress has no doubt had countless paycheck roles lobbed at her. But so far she's only appeared onscreen in a supporting role in "Friends With Kids" (alongside many of her "Bridesmaids" costars) and now "Girl Most Likely" (formerly "Imogene"), the latest from filmmakers Robert Pulcini & Shari Springer-Bergman ("American Splendor," "The Nanny Diaries"). The film opens with a brief prologue in New Jersey with a young...

Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, a failed New York playwright awkwardly navigating the transition from Next Big Thing to Last Year’s News. After both her career and relationship hit the skids, she’s forced to make the humiliating move back home to New Jersey with her eccentric mother and younger brother (Annette Bening and Christopher Fitzgerald).
Adding further insult to injury, there’s a strange man sleeping in her old bedroom (Darren Criss) and an even stranger man sleeping in her mother’s bed (Matt Dillon). Through it all, Imogene eventually realizes that as part of her rebuilding process she must finally come to love and accept both her family and her Jersey roots if she’s ever going to be stable enough to get the hell away from them.

Before the trailer, we thought: With Kristen Wiig's first post-"Bridesmaids" starring role, a supporting cast that includes Annette Bening and Matt Dillon in welcome comedic roles, all signs pointed to a return to form for "American Splendor" directors Shari Spring Berman and Robert Pulcini, following "The Nanny Diaries" and "The Extra Man." Add on a successful premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival (where Lionsgate picked up U.S. distribution rights) and it seemed that all the pieces were in place for one of the summer's more enjoyable comedies. And Now: From the second Wiig and Bening are on-screen, it's clear that the two are having a blast in their mother-daughter roles, with Bening bringing a natural charisma on-screen not seen since her Oscar-nominated turn in 2010's "The Kids Are All Right." Meanwhile, after spending the last few year's in relatively generic genre fare, Dillon seems to...

Albany, N.Y. — New York sought to combat violence by rushing the nation's toughest gun control measure into law after the Connecticut school shootings that killed 26 people, but the state is now carving out an exemption to make sure movie and TV producers can stage running gun battles on Manhattan streets.
Movie and TV productions have long been courted by New York and other states with tax breaks in exchange for the jobs and glamour of the industry. Hollywood is also a major campaign fundraising stop for New York politicians.
"We spend a lot of money in the state bringing movie production here, post-production here, so obviously we would want to facilitate that," said Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who wants to expand the film and TV tax credit.

Apparently you can go home again, even if – to get there – you have to fake a suicide, be discovered by your phony Manhattan socialite friend, hospitalized and eventually released into the care of your demented, superficial and out-of-touch mother. At least, that’s what happens in Imogene, a black-ish comedy from screenwriter Michelle Morgan (Middle of Nowhere) that’s fashioned to fit Kristen Wiig’s bitingly sarcastic and self-deprecating comedic delivery by codirectors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the team behind American Splendor and The Nanny Diaries. Wiig’s Imogene is properly defined as defiant and more-than-a-little delusional in the film’s opening scene, where we see the snarky middle schooler...
