Yet another batch of Dark Sky Films titles have made their way onto Screambox, joining previously dropped classics Willow Creek, Minor Premise, and The Deeper You Dig (details), as well as Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary, Landlocked, and Possum (details), Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer 1 & 2, and Emelie (details), and even Stake Land, Summer of Blood, & Bitter Feast (details).

First, from master of horror Tobe Hooper, Eaten Alive has now taken a bite out of Screambox.

I was curious. What exciting trends would I notice when watching (and re-watching) through all 185 out of 192 available entries—including the top ten finalists I’ve reviewed in Part 1. Especially considering the restricted movement order (Rmo) that gave rise to this competition, will also limit a lot of things. Almost every short movie below can be described as: Character(s) in a residence/safe space gets haunted/goes crazy/killed.

In broad strokes, that’s the set-up of almost all horror. The bread and butter of the genre. From the mundane world, you’ll be brought to the horrifying world, or pointing out how frightening the ordinary can be.

Earlier this year, we learned that 1998’s Urban Legend was being set up for a reboot, with Colin Minihan of Grave Encounters in the director’s chair. The Screen Gems production is now reportedly close to securing its lead actors, with Collider reporting that Sydney Chandler and Katherine McNamara are in talks to lead the cast of the new, apparently social-media focused version of the ’90s hit.

Chandler is the daughter of Friday Night Lights‘ Kyle Chandler, and is a relative unknown compared to McNamara, who plays Mia Queen in Arrow and has also appeared in the television series Shadowhunters. The same Collider piece also notes that the Urban Legend producers want a well-known and diverse young cast, with Keith Powers of Straight Outta Compton also being considered.

In the age of streaming and VOD, movie fans old enough to remember the era of VHS and DVD rentals are surely filled with warm and fuzzy memories of browsing the aisles of their local Blockbuster Video. While they once numbered over 9,000 locations, there now exists a single Blockbuster store, in Bend, Oregon, which is offering a very special blast from the past in the form of three available overnight stays on Airbnb.

Yes, you can actually have a movie-night sleepover inside an actual Blockbuster, which has created a living room space amid its towering shelves of movies. The decor harkens back to the 1990s peak of the rental chain, with a pull-out couch and pastel-patterned bedspreads and pillows. Guests will be able to play VHS movies on the included 4:3 TV.

Unfortunately, the sleepovers are available only to residents in Bend’s Deschutes County. Beginning on August 17 at 1 p.

It’s a slapstick comedy horror film that’s as juvenile and dumb as you’re going to find, but hey… I sometimes enjoy a juvenile and dumb comedy flick. Bring it on.

The story itself follows four kind-of-but-struggling-to-remain-successful YouTubers who, once they begin to make money on the YouTube platform start to see their subscriptions and views jumping ship and dwindling, so in order to attempt to pull back the subscribers and after a television deal, they take on the spooky case of Bloody Mary. These days, I’m willing to compare Supernatural to The Simpsons insofar that I can’t imagine the television landscape without either. Really, the former has been going strong for most of my adult life, and I still remember curiously tuning in for the pilot episode when it originally aired during the fall of 2005.

Now, as we head into season 14, we can fondly look back on all the memories we’ve shared with Sam and Dean Winchester, be it their averting the Apocalypse on numerous occasions, or if it’s just an awesome animated crossover with Scooby-Doo.

Before I start this review, I feel that I should go ahead and admit this right off the bat: I know very little about just what exactly “creepypastas” are, or how the mythos of Slender Man inspired the real-life tragedy involving a pair of young girls in Wisconsin who brutally stabbed their friend to satisfy the fictional character. All I can really speak to here is the film itself, directed by Sylvain White, which is what I will be focusing on. Urban legends encompass every sick and twisted horror story people (with nothing better to do) can dream up. Be it monsters that defy science or countless variations on Bloody Mary, more and more come out of the woodwork every year, as the world grows more connected.

Little-told local legends can find new life on the internet, and any search of ‘urban legends’ on Google can lead you into a downward spiral of pant-wetting fear and doubt. They fire up the imagination so greatly that it’s a wonder more of them haven’t yet been made into horror films yet.

If you've ever been dared to walk into a dark bathroom and say Bloody Mary three times while looking into the mirror, you know how hard it is to get that last one out. As an exercise in pure tension there's nothing quite like it.

Don't Say Her Name is a new short film by Andrew Robertson of Passerby Films that, without being overly complex, manages to capture the true tension of the Bloody Mary experience. In short, it had me on the edge of my seat.

Synopsis:

Don't say her name into the mirror. She'll pull you in and take you with her to hell.

It’s TakeOver hangover time, but Nxt laid on a veritable Bloody Mary of a show in an attempt to combat the standard dip in momentum. New challengers emerged for both the Women’s Championship and the Nxt Championship, as well as rumblings from Dawson and Wilder about the Nxt Tag belts, and the last third of the show was dedicated to a reasonably thrilling Battle Royal. Add to that the usual hot Full Sail crowd and the unnerving debut of Nia Jax and you’ve got the recipe for a solid comedown episode of WWE’s third brand.

The entire episode was structured around the battle royal, with talking heads from various superstars punctuating the hour. It gave the episode as whole a sense of identity and narrative, the sort of simple, focused storytelling that is so often absent from Raw’s bloated three-hour monster.

As we get closer and closer to Halloween, the home entertainment releases on Blu-ray and DVD seem to get better and better, as this Tuesday will see the release of several fantastic cult classics and so much more. On October 13th, Criterion Collection is bringing home David Cronenberg’s terrifying masterpiece The Brood to both Blu and DVD and we’ve also got The Return of Count Yorga to look forward to courtesy of Scream Factory.

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.

First up is Axelle Carolyn, the writer and director of 2013’s Soulmate, who first spearheaded the anthology and whose creepy, atmospheric segment “Grimm Grinning Ghost” stars Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes) as a young woman confronted by an urban legend in which she does not believe.

As one of the masterminds behind Tales of Halloween, can you give some background on how the project came together?

Axelle Carolyn: I’ve been friends with these guys for the best part of ten years, and had been thinking for a while that it'd be great to work on something together. There's an awesome horror community in L.A., and we all hang together to talk horror, watch horror, eat, breathe and live horror.
