Be my victim. For the many who’ve seen it over the years, 1992’s Candyman remains an unforgettable, almost unforgivably effective grievance: a film whose terrors are sticky, dense, pleasurably warying, and uncomfortable; whose politics feel knowing and rife with intention, just this side of didactic, yet poisoned at the root by a premise that seemed, always, at risk of slipping somewhat beyond the film’s grasp. And yet that uncertainty remains one of its primary thrills, like watching a train careen toward a fork in the tracks with too much speed,...

Note: This write-up will stylize the short films part of Kuman Pictures competition as Film (Director/Channel/Production) for readability purposes. Other references to stories or movies will use the standard “Film/Book/Story” (Director/Author) format for differentiation. Have fun reading.
I was curious. What exciting trends would I notice when watching (and re-watching) through all 185 out of 192 available entries—including the top ten finalists I’ve reviewed in Part 1. Especially considering the restricted movement order (Rmo) that gave rise to this competition, will also limit a lot of things. Almost every short movie below can be described as: Character(s) in a residence/safe space gets haunted/goes crazy/killed.
In broad strokes, that’s the set-up of almost all horror. The bread and butter of the genre. From the mundane world, you’ll be brought to the horrifying world, or pointing out how frightening the ordinary can be.

Earlier this year, we learned that 1998’s Urban Legend was being set up for a reboot, with Colin Minihan of Grave Encounters in the director’s chair. The Screen Gems production is now reportedly close to securing its lead actors, with Collider reporting that Sydney Chandler and Katherine McNamara are in talks to lead the cast of the new, apparently social-media focused version of the ’90s hit.
Chandler is the daughter of Friday Night Lights‘ Kyle Chandler, and is a relative unknown compared to McNamara, who plays Mia Queen in Arrow and has also appeared in the television series Shadowhunters. The same Collider piece also notes that the Urban Legend producers want a well-known and diverse young cast, with Keith Powers of Straight Outta Compton also being considered.

In the age of streaming and VOD, movie fans old enough to remember the era of VHS and DVD rentals are surely filled with warm and fuzzy memories of browsing the aisles of their local Blockbuster Video. While they once numbered over 9,000 locations, there now exists a single Blockbuster store, in Bend, Oregon, which is offering a very special blast from the past in the form of three available overnight stays on Airbnb.
Yes, you can actually have a movie-night sleepover inside an actual Blockbuster, which has created a living room space amid its towering shelves of movies. The decor harkens back to the 1990s peak of the rental chain, with a pull-out couch and pastel-patterned bedspreads and pillows. Guests will be able to play VHS movies on the included 4:3 TV.
Unfortunately, the sleepovers are available only to residents in Bend’s Deschutes County. Beginning on August 17 at 1 p.

Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary is a Brazilian export from Fabrício Bittar (Como se Tornar o Pior Aluno da Escola) who also writes along with Andre Catarinacho and Danilo Gentili. It’s a slapstick comedy horror film that’s as juvenile and dumb as you’re going to find, but hey… I sometimes enjoy a juvenile and dumb comedy flick. Bring it on.
The story itself follows four kind-of-but-struggling-to-remain-successful YouTubers who, once they begin to make money on the YouTube platform start to see their subscriptions and views jumping ship and dwindling, so in order to attempt to pull back the subscribers and after a television deal, they take on the spooky case of Bloody Mary. We got an inside look at the Candyman reboot during a press event hosted by Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele...
Candyman has been gone for a long time. Almost 30 years ago, the ghostly urban legend became a modern day myth in the original 1992 film from Bernard Rose and Clive Barker—cutting up inner-city Chicago one bad game of “Bloody Mary” at a time. Yet it’s been more than two decades since he last appeared in one of that classic’s lesser sequels, and for some, that might be reason enough to finally utter the words “Candyman” five times into a mirror. If you’ve watched the new Candyman trailer though, you know that would be a deadly mistake. Indeed, the hook-handed killer never really left us.
At least that is the crux of director Nia DaCosta and producer/co-writer Jordan Peele’s reimagining. In a world...

Racists of every stripe have been telling Americans that they should be afraid of black men for as long as there’s been an America. It took a 1992 horror movie, however, to the turn the embodiment of that fear-mongering into a literal bogeyman that appears out of nowhere to violently murder people. Candyman — written and directed by Bernard Rose, adapted from Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden” (and coming out in a new Blu-Ray edition on November 20th) — sics an undead son of a former slave on a white woman,...

These days, I’m willing to compare Supernatural to The Simpsons insofar that I can’t imagine the television landscape without either. Really, the former has been going strong for most of my adult life, and I still remember curiously tuning in for the pilot episode when it originally aired during the fall of 2005.
Now, as we head into season 14, we can fondly look back on all the memories we’ve shared with Sam and Dean Winchester, be it their averting the Apocalypse on numerous occasions, or if it’s just an awesome animated crossover with Scooby-Doo.
Still, I’m reminded of what attracted myself and others to the series back in the day, and that was the strong influence felt by various urban legends and bits of cultural folklore. As someone who grew up on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Unsolved Mysteries, you can imagine why...

Before I start this review, I feel that I should go ahead and admit this right off the bat: I know very little about just what exactly “creepypastas” are, or how the mythos of Slender Man inspired the real-life tragedy involving a pair of young girls in Wisconsin who brutally stabbed their friend to satisfy the fictional character. All I can really speak to here is the film itself, directed by Sylvain White, which is what I will be focusing on. So, keeping that in mind, I will say that I ended up liking Slender Man a lot more than I thought I would, due to some solid casting and haunting visuals that do a great job bringing this Internet urban legend to life.

IndieWire’s Springboard column profiles up-and-comers in the film industry worthy of your attention.
Rachel Lambert started with the truth. For her narrative feature directorial debut — she’s previously helmed a short film and a feature-length documentary — Lambert and her writing partner Nathan Gregorski dove into true stories of families marked by tragedy, though not in the way people typically expect. Initially inspired by a New York Times article that chronicled the fallout of publicized tragedies on the families of the perpetrators (think: David Kaczynski, who helped bring his brother Ted, the so-called Unabomber, to justice), the pair started working on a feature that would tell that kind of story, built as a sensitive family drama with secrets to spare.

Would the ScreenAnarchy community like to know about it? Um. Yeah! Two kids serving detention discuss the right way to summon Blondie, an old Brazilian urban legend. One of them tries. It works. Turns out the Bloody Mary type of urban legend show up in other cultures as well. Vescio says that it varies from town to town, the way to summon Blondie varies from school to school, and it happens mostly in school bathrooms. What i think we are seeing here is...

Andrea Constand was the first woman to come forward. In January 2005, the Temple University staffer alleged iconic comedian and TV dad Bill Cosby had drugged and sexually assaulted her. The media's coverage of Constand's claims petered out following the filing of a lawsuit against Cosby that was eventually settled out of court. Then, some eight years later, more women started breaking their silence, lodging similar complaints against Cosby. Today, more than 50 women have claimed they were victimized by the television legend. Cosby, through his attorneys, has repeatedly denied the allegations. What is it about towering apartment buildings that fascinates filmmakers, especially those working in horror, sci-fi, and fantasy? It’s easy to imagine these eyesores of urban development — especially those with secured entrances and exclusive tenants — harboring sinister secrets inside their walls.
High-Rise, director Ben Wheatley adaptation’s of J.G. Ballard‘s eponymous sci-fi novel, more than fits into this strange subset of films, as it focuses on dystopian class warfare inside a monolithic beast of Brualist architecture. With the film now in theaters (and on VOD), we look at other other films that imagine the incredible, horrifying, or supernatural happenings in and around these deceptively unassuming structures.
Apartment Trilogy (Roman Polanski)
Has any set of films turned the usual drudgeries of apartment living — climbing up your stairs for the umpteenth time, dealing with troubled amenities, and trying your best to acknowledge neighbors’ existence without getting the least bit involved...

I've seen it all. New York City is soon to be home to Beetle House, a Tim Burton-themed bar. Slashfilm says the establishment, which comes from the same guys who created a Will Ferrell-themed bar last year, will embody the feel of Burton's films...but probably not Batman. The whole idea — even for the most average of Burton fans like myself — sounds pretty cool. The drink list gives you a feel of the place. It all sounds good...but man, look at those NYC drink prices!
It’s Showtime: Bulleit Rye whiskey, 2 shots of espresso, simple syrup, dash of peychauds bitters, lemon peel garnish. $16
Beetlejuice: Muddled blackberry and limes, Tequila, Blackberry schnapps, Angostura bitters, splash of cranberry. $14

I admit it, I’m a sentimental old fart. I get choked up and maudlin very often, when I think of family and friends, a moment in time when I realized the tragedy life can bring to us, or the joy. I tear up at the movies regularly, or reading certain passages in books. But I never thought I would weep at the loss of a video system. If you read We Are Movie Geeks regularly you must be aware of the video revolution of the 1980s, when VHS players and recorders found a place in almost every home in America. I hope you recall the early days when VHS was neck and neck with Betamax, a technically better system. Remember the days of Mom and Pop video rental stores when almost anyone could open a store front, and with a collection of VHS tapes start making money? As one of the many,...

Urban legends encompass every sick and twisted horror story people (with nothing better to do) can dream up. Be it monsters that defy science or countless variations on Bloody Mary, more and more come out of the woodwork every year, as the world grows more connected.
Little-told local legends can find new life on the internet, and any search of ‘urban legends’ on Google can lead you into a downward spiral of pant-wetting fear and doubt. They fire up the imagination so greatly that it’s a wonder more of them haven’t yet been made into horror films yet.
Anyone who’s seen the underrated 90s slasher flick Urban Legend can tell you how ripe for cinematic adaptation these creepy little folk stories are. Heck, that film even managed to stuff about ten of them in – the classics, like the old lady who tries to dry her wet dog in the microwave,...

Edgar, get out the Bloody Mary bar, it's time to celebrate. You're the Worst has been renewed for a third season set to debut on Fxx in the summer of 2016. The critically-acclaimed comedy also comes with a new deal for creator and executive producer Stephen Falk. "Stephen is one of the best new talents in comedy—as funny, thoughtful and original as You're the Worst and we can't wait to see what he comes up with next," Nick Grad, one of the presidents of original programming at FX Networks and FX Productions, said in a statement. "You're the Worst, already one of the most critically-acclaimed comedies on television, is also one of the most innovative, something Stephen and the...

If you've ever been dared to walk into a dark bathroom and say Bloody Mary three times while looking into the mirror, you know how hard it is to get that last one out. As an exercise in pure tension there's nothing quite like it.
Don't Say Her Name is a new short film by Andrew Robertson of Passerby Films that, without being overly complex, manages to capture the true tension of the Bloody Mary experience. In short, it had me on the edge of my seat.
Synopsis:
Don't say her name into the mirror. She'll pull you in and take you with her to hell.

Special mention: Häxan
Directed by Benjamin Christensen
Denmark / Sweden, 1922
Genre: Documentary
Häxan (a.k.a The Witches or Witchcraft Through The Ages) is a 1922 silent documentary about the history of witchcraft, told in a variety of styles, from illustrated slideshows to dramatized reenactments of alleged real-life events. Written and directed by Benjamin Christensen, and based partly on Christensen’s study of the Malleus Maleficarum, Häxan is a fine examination of how superstition and the misunderstanding of mental illness could lead to the hysteria of the witch-hunts. At the time, it was the most expensive Scandinavian film ever made, costing nearly 2 million Swedish krona. Although it won acclaim in Denmark and Sweden, the film was banned in the United States and heavily censored in other countries for what were considered, at that time, graphic depictions of torture, nudity, and sexual perversion. Depending on which version you’re watching, the commentary is...

It’s TakeOver hangover time, but Nxt laid on a veritable Bloody Mary of a show in an attempt to combat the standard dip in momentum. New challengers emerged for both the Women’s Championship and the Nxt Championship, as well as rumblings from Dawson and Wilder about the Nxt Tag belts, and the last third of the show was dedicated to a reasonably thrilling Battle Royal. Add to that the usual hot Full Sail crowd and the unnerving debut of Nia Jax and you’ve got the recipe for a solid comedown episode of WWE’s third brand.
The entire episode was structured around the battle royal, with talking heads from various superstars punctuating the hour. It gave the episode as whole a sense of identity and narrative, the sort of simple, focused storytelling that is so often absent from Raw’s bloated three-hour monster.

Three years on from Paranormal Activity 4, we're finally about to reach the conclusion of the entire Paranormal Activity saga. Spin-off 'sidequel' The Marked Ones did something to fill the hiatus early last year while Team Paranormal wrestled with where to take the main story, but with that screenplay cracked and production now complete, here's the latest trailer to warn us what's in store... The family enduring the scares this time are Ryan, Emily, their daughter Leila, and Ryan's younger brother Mike. Another daughter has died a year previous to the film, which will almost certainly tie into events here. The location is Palo Alto, where the clan has just moved from New York, so that video game designer Ryan can start his new job. Emily, meanwhile, is an Earth mother type who does yoga, while Leila is described as a tomboyish combination of her big-kid dad and more mature mom…...

Sometimes it’s psychological. Sometimes it’s visceral. It can be a masked killer’s twisted pastime. A labyrinth our poor heroes must find their way out of. Perhaps a nasty round of torture by the Big Bad. Whatever it is, the sick feeling of impending doom overcomes us as we realize the characters might not make it out alive. Sometimes they can think their way through. Sometimes they can fight. But when the exits are closed and the madman decides to get creative, all bets are off.

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
First up is Axelle Carolyn, the writer and director of 2013’s Soulmate, who first spearheaded the anthology and whose creepy, atmospheric segment “Grimm Grinning Ghost” stars Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes) as a young woman confronted by an urban legend in which she does not believe.
As one of the masterminds behind Tales of Halloween, can you give some background on how the project came together?
Axelle Carolyn: I’ve been friends with these guys for the best part of ten years, and had been thinking for a while that it'd be great to work on something together. There's an awesome horror community in L.A., and we all hang together to talk horror, watch horror, eat, breathe and live horror.
