RSVP and Roy Kapur Films are thrilled to announce that the Oscar-winning maestro A.R. Rahman will be scoring the music for its upcoming film Pippa directed by Raja Krishna Menon and starring Ishaan Khattar, Mrunal Thakur, and Priyanshu Painyuli.
Pippa, the first-of-its-kind action-packed tank war film is based on the book The Burning Chaffees written by Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta. In this heroic battle film, Ishaan is set to take on the role of war veteran Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta of the 45th Cavalry tank squadron who, along with his siblings, fought on the eastern front during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, which led to the liberation of India’s neighbour Bangladesh.
The film’s unique title highlights the magnificent Russian amphibious war tank called the Pt-76, popularly and lovingly known as “Pippa”, like an empty ghee da dabba that smoothly floats on water, which is the celebrated army tank at the crux of the film.

We had planned to visit family in India this summer, but instead I'm adding my notes to these travel tips for friends. And each Sunday night, I'm watching Beecham House, which premiered last month on PBS Masterpiece for Us audiences.
Set in India, Beecham House's six episodes narrate a fact-based fiction of an Englishman living in Delhi in the late 19th century. His household includes a baby, Indians, and some British family, with interactions with Muslim neighbors, British and French troops, and the Mughals. It is written, produced, and directed by Gurinder Chadha, whose films like Blinded by the Light have astutely championed the nuances of Indian culture, featuring familial care, domesticity, coming of age, marriage, parenthood, or larger issues like racial discrimination, prejudice, and even ethnic violence. Beecham House attempts a monumental task: creating a glimpse into the complex power struggles among capitalist empires that plundered colonial India...

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

Mr. Gowariker revealed during his talk in London that he will give audiences a behind-the-scenes look into making movies. “It will be about the genesis of an idea and how that idea goes through these various developmental stages.”
“Filmmaking is a collaborative art,” he says, “I am making movies. Telling stories. And it gives you a lot of satisfaction when you bring so many different visions together to tell your story. . . . It is something the audience can take back with them. Something that even five years later is left behind in your mind.”
Mr. Gowariker revealed that he does a lot of readings and discussions with his actors to get them into character, so that, “once they are on set it is just about capturing the emotion.”
Of course, we had to talk about the music of his movies, and he gave an in-depth answer about styles, language, working with Ar Rahman, Javed saab and how it all comes together. “It is quite an exciting process.” Adding praise for Rahman’s amazing work, “The take-off point is usually Rahman first because he is the guy who makes it exciting – makes the melody exciting; makes the sounds he is going to use new and fresh.”

October 31st is Halloween, when kids (of all ages) dress up to go trick-or-treating. Then, of course, there are the cool adults getting in on the costume fun to go to Halloween parties. Since we are all Bollywood buffs, okay fanatics, we thought it would be fun to poll our writers to see who they would love to dress up if we had a Bollywood Halloween – Bollyween Ball. Boy oh boy were we flooded with amazing and inventive ideas.
Some of these costumes you could probably put together easily. However, some might need extra help from family, tailors, costume designers, stylists, costume engineers and even Oscar winning makeup artist Greg Canoom (transformed Srk in Fan and Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire)!!
Check out how the excellent team of BollySpice would celebrate Halloween Bolly-ish style.

Not all filmmaker-actor relationships are as brittle as the one between Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his protege Ranbir Kapoor. The minute Saawariya flopped Ranbir moved away refusing to do any subsequent film that Bhansali offered him. Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan who collaborated over the historic Jodhaa Akbar have unfortunately come a cropper with their second team-effort Mohenjo Daro. The tabloids are turning turtle tittering over the twosome's torn togetherness. All figments of an over-fertile imagination! For, sources close to both Gowariker and Roshan reveal that the duo is getting together again soon for a third film, regardless of the box office outcome of Mohenjo Daro. Says the source, "Both Ashutosh and Hrithik are far too sorted to indulge in any blame game. Reports of Hrithik sending Ashutosh angry text messages about the failure of Mohenjo Daro are not only false but also misleading. They are meant to create differences...

In 2001, Ashutosh Gowarikar’s “Lagaan” became the third Indian film in history to receive an Oscar nomination. The story, featuring villagers in British India who challenge their rulers’ tax impositions with a game of cricket, established Gowarikar as one of India’s leading filmmakers. It also triggered his preference for period dramas of epic proportions; he followed it up with 2008’s “Jodhaa Akbar,” a less dynamic but lavish fictional rendition of the love story between the famous Mughal emperor and his Hindu wife. A few forgettable films later, Gowarikar has returned to his favorite genre with “Mohenjo Daro.”
Based on the city at the heart of the Indus Valley Civilization, the film is an ambitious attempt to paint a portrait of a relatively obscure slice of the past. But the same writer-director who set the bar for historical fiction 15 years ago doesn’t meet it even halfway now—bloated and tiresome,...

The super team of Ashutosh Gowariker, A.R. Rahman and Javed Akhtar are back together after a hiatus with Hrithik Roshan in another period film, Mohenjo Daro. We are to be taken back to a time “before India was what it became” in which the vivid tunes of Rahman combined with the beautiful lyrics of Javed Akthar come together to give the viewer the experience of life in pre-India. Let’s see if the team that gave all the wonderful songs from Jodhaa Akbar meets up to their own set standards.
We begin our musical journey the title track Mohenjo Mohenjo with a rustic African drum feel to it. In some ways, we get an expected style of percussion and tuning for a title track. But neither does this take away the grandiose charm nor does it stand out above all others. One does notice the percussion is quite heavy, unlike ARRs previous magnum opus musicals.
