Tim Allen is one step closer to returning to ABC for a third time. The Alphabet net has given a pilot order to his latest sitcom, “Shifting Gears,” from 20th Television. Allen is on board to star and executive produce the multi-cam sitcom pilot — which is still a working title — which will also be written and executive produced by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully.
In the project, Allen plays Matt, the “stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”
Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker and Rick Messina are the non-writing exec producers on the show.
“Shifting Gears” continues Allen’s long association with ABC and Disney, including the long-running hit (1991-1997) “Home Improvement.” Allen later starred on ABC’s “Last Man Standing,” which aired on the Alphabet web from 2011 to...

Savages opens this weekend. You know, the Oliver Stone drug opera, with Blake Lively in a three-way relationship with Tim Riggins and Aaron Johnson. Let's take a trip in the Wabac Machine, shall we? It's 2004, and although it received high marks from critics and developed a small legion of fans, the Fox Network, in its infinite wisdom decided to take Family Guy off the air, and with it went show creator Seth MacFarlane. That year MacFarlane's addition to the entertainment world was a guest spot on an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise as an engineer and a role as "TV Announcer" on a show called Complete Savages. Now let's hop back in to the machine and go to April 11th, 2010. Not one, not two, but three shows by MacFarlane, including the resurrected Family Guy, all premiere new episodes that make up an hour and a half of Fox's two-hour Animation Domination block. Oh, and he's the highest paid writer-producer on television after signing a $100 million contract back in 2008. Guess what? Now he's making a...

'Golden' shines for Disney
Walt Disney Pictures has bought an untitled adult treasure hunt spec script by Amy Pocha and Seth Cohen. Chris Bender and JC Spink's Benderspink, Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot's Offspring as well as Mason Novick are attached to produce.
The story follows a group of childhood friends who reunite in their early 30s to seek out a treasure that they tried and failed to find as kids. The script is based on an original idea by Novick.
Offspring's Matthew Mizel brought the treasure hunt project to Kristin Burr at Disney. Mizel will act as a co-producer and oversee for Offspring. Burr is shepherding for Disney.
Langley Perer is overseeing for Benderspink.
Disney-based Offspring is prepping Bedtime Stories, which Shankman will direct with Adam Sandler starring, and Step Up 2.
Benderspink is developing Bob the Musical at Disney. The company has the comedies Mancation at New Line and The Guy Not Taken at DreamWorks.
Pocha and Cohen are relative newcomers to the screenwriting scene. Pocha was on the production staff on ABC's Complete Savages, while Cohen was a story editor on WB Network's High School Reunion.
The duo are repped by Benderspink and attorney Sean Marks.

ABC 'Swap' meet year round
ABC has given the green light to a full season of its Wednesday reality series Wife Swap. ABC and other broadcast networks also took a half-step toward picking up a clutch of fledgling freshman series by handing out a number of additional script orders during the past week. But in general, the broadcast nets seem to be treading more cautiously this year than in the recent past when it comes to giving full-season pickups to new series performing in the fair-to-middling range. Additional scripts help network and studio brass evaluate the long-term prospects for shows on the Nielsen fence without having to fully commit to new episodic production. ABC has ordered nine more scripts of its Tuesday 9:30 p.m. sitcom Rodney, which has done respectable, if not impressive, business behind 9 p.m. anchor According to Jim. ABC also asked for six more scripts of Friday newcomer Complete Savages, which has so far been fairly weak behind 8 Simple Rules in the 8 p.m. hour.

Sinclair docu ratings so-so in larger markets
NEW YORK -- Sinclair Broadcast Group's controversial news special A POW Story: Politics, Pressure and the Media did only so-so Nielsen numbers in some of Sinclair's larger markets Friday despite an avalanche of media attention devoted during the past two weeks to Sinclair's plans to run the politically charged special. In 15 of the larger markets where Sinclair stations carried the special in the opening hour of primetime, A POW Story averaged a 2.9 household rating/5 share, according to local market data provided by Nielsen Media Research. Sinclair aired the special on 40 of the 62 stations it owns in various markets nationwide. Of the markets where ratings data was available Monday, A POW Story scored highest in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville market that straddles North and South Carolina. The 8 p.m. telecast on ABC affiliate WLOS, which serves the nation's 35th-largest TV market, delivered a 5.5 household rating/9 share, a significant increase from the 3.8/7 the station pulled in the time slot the previous week with regular ABC programming, the comedies 8 Simple Rules and Complete Savages.

Leguizamo, Murrieta land in Fox family
John Leguizamo has teamed with writer Peter Murrieta for a comedy series project for Fox based on Leguizamo's real life as a performer and a family man. The family life of feature and TV stars has successfully translated to a TV series in such projects as the UPN comedy All of Us, based on Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's experiences. ABC is looking for similar success with the upcoming sitcom Complete Savages, inspired by the family life of executive producer Mel Gibson. The Leguizamo/Murrieta project, from 3 Arts Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV, is described as being in the vein of Make Room for Daddy.

Gibson Moves into TV
Mel Gibson's next project differs considerably from his controversial smash hit The Passion Of The Christ - it's a TV program about a single father raising five sons. Savages, currently in development for American television network ABC, is set to star Keith Carradine and is loosely based on Gibson's own life. Gibson - who himself has five sons - will not appear onscreen, but he has directed the first episode of the show in which Carradine plays the father of the boys, aged between 11 and 17.

TV trio gets Family Friendly funding
ABC's sitcom Savages, CBS' coming-of-age drama Clubhouse and NBC's animated comedy Father of the Pride are the new primetime series set to debut in the fall that were funded in part by the Family Friendly Programming Forum, the Association of National Advertisers said Tuesday. Launched in 1999, the Family Friendly initiative is a coalition of 40 big-ticket advertisers, including IBM, General Motors, FedEx Corp., General Mills and Ford Motor Corp., that provide seed money to the major broadcast networks to develop family-oriented programs. Other shows that have benefited from FFPF funding early on in their development include the WB Network's Gilmore Girls, ABC's 8 Simple Rules and NBC's American Dreams.
