The show is based on Joe Murray's childhood experiences at summer camp (he said he attended summer camp every summer for "4 or 5 years in a row" and that he "couldn't really get the scouting thing down".)
Joe Murray wanted one of the main characters to be Indian and decided that the elephant would make a good choice, and so Raj was born.
According to creator Joe Murray, the character of Nurse Leslie always scoots around on a swivel chair because Murray noticed that "...doctor's never seem to get up from their stools. Only scoot themselves around the examining room."
Joe Murray described the voice of Scoutmaster Lumpus as "...a crazy mix of Richard Nixon and W.C. Fields."
