Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” has added Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes to its cast.

The continuation of the “28 Days Later” franchise will be released in theaters globally by Sony Pictures. “28 Days Later” was released in 2002 and starred Cillian Murphy, then largely unknown. Boyle directed the feature, while Alex Garland wrote. A sequel, “28 Weeks Later,” was released in 2007.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps for the new screenplay, written by Garland. It will be part of an upcoming trilogy, for which Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct the second film.

Boyle and Garland are producing, as is original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice. Bernie Bellew is also producing. Murphy is also returning as an executive producer, and is not currently attached to star.

Exclusive: The new 28 Years Later trilogy from director Danny Boyle and Sony Pictures is gaining momentum, and some serious star power. Sources tell Deadline that Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes have boarded the first pic, a sequel to the original 28 Days Later.

Boyle is directing the first movie from a script by Alex Garland. Sony will release the film in theaters globally.

While plot details are vague, the original 28 Days Later in 2002 centered on a bicycle courier (played by Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to discover the world had been overrun with zombies following the outbreak of a virus. The pic grossed more than $82 million worldwide and led to a 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, on which Boyle and Garland served solely as EPs.

The squad’s back together in the latest episode of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, suitably titled “The Return.” Well, most of Clone Force 99 is back. While Echo is back with the Batch, and Hunter is begrudgingly letting Crosshair back into the fold, they’ve still lost Tech. There are already plenty of theories out there suggesting Tech’s still out there, but for the moment, his apparent death has left a hole in the fabric of the team. At its best, this Star Wars series is about family and this one’s close to complete but not quite, especially as there are quite a few wounds left to heal between Crosshair and the rest of the squad.

The Creator won big at the 22nd annual Visual Effects Society Awards Wednesday night.

The awards were handed out during a ceremony, hosted by actor-comedian Jay Pharoah, at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

The Creator took home five awards in the feature competition, including outstanding visual effects in a photoreal feature. The Last of Us was also a top winner in the series categories, scoring four awards, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse led the animation competition with four wins.

Other winners of the night included Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Oppenheimer, Nyad, The Mandalorian and The Flash.

It was previously announced that producer Joyce Cox, who produced VFX on movies including Avatar and The Dark Knight, received the Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony.

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).

“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.

Chinese director Huo Meng, Taiwanese actor Lee Hong-chi and Macau-based Maxim Bessmertny are among a dozen emerging East Asian talent who will present feature film projects and works in progress at the Festival of Young Cinema (Asia-Europe).

The inaugural edition of the festival, running Jan. 5-11, 2024, will operate as a bridge between the mainland China markets and audiences on one hand and the production and sales industries behind art-house cinema from Europe and other parts of Asia.

The studio will launch Wonderverse, its very first immersive entertainment destination, this December just outside of Chicago on level one of the Oakbrook Center. The space will feature a hybrid of physical and immersive multimedia experiences, interactive installations, dynamic attractions, and themed dining experiences, based on major film, TV and video games including Uncharted, Ghostbusters, Jumanji, Bad Boys, Zombieland and 21 Jump Street.

Exclusive: Bleecker Street’s survival horror thriller The Origin, which debuted at Fantastic Fest in September, is getting a title change. Now known as Out of Darkness, it will hit theaters on February 9.

Directed by Scottish helmer Andrew Cumming and written by Ruth Greenberg (The Spark) in both of their feature debuts, Out of Darkness follows a group of six who have struggled across the narrow sea to find a new home. They are starving, desperate and living 45,000 years ago. First they must find shelter, and they strike out across the tundra wastes toward the distant mountains that promise the abundant caves they need to survive. But when night falls, anticipation turns to fear and doubt as they realize they are not alone. As relationships in the group fracture, the determination of one young woman reveals the terrible actions taken to survive.

On Sunday, October 29, 2023, at 8:00 Pm, Disney Channel will air Season 2, Episode 18 of “The Villains of Valley View” titled “The Return.” In this episode, teenage supervillain Havoc takes a brave step by challenging the leader of the League of Villains. This decision sets off a chain of events, leading to Havoc’s family having to change their identities and move to a quiet Texas suburb.

“The Villains of Valley View” is an animated series that explores the lives of villains and their families. It combines action, humor, and family dynamics to tell its story.

In this particular episode, viewers will follow the adventures of Havoc’s family as they adapt to a new life in a sleepy Texas neighborhood, trying to keep their secret identities hidden.

Andrey Zvyagintsev, the two-time Oscar-nominated Russian filmmaker of “Loveless” and “Leviathan,” will next direct “Jupiter,” a politically-minded movie set to shoot in Spain and France next spring.

The movie will tell the story of a Russian oligarch’s reckoning with the harsh reality of his family’s future.

Anonymous Content and Lorem Ipsum Entertainment (“War on Everyone”) are producing “Jupiter” alongside Les Films du Losange (“A Silence”) in France and Elastica Films (“Anatomy of a Fall”) in Spain. Zvyagintsev will reteam with his regular crew, including cinemtographer Mikhail Krichman and production designer Andrey Ponkratov, who worked “Loveless” and “Leviathan.”

“Jupiter” is set in the seemingly impenetrable world of the ultra-wealthy and is being described by the producers as an “unrelenting exploration of power and corruption.”

“The Recruit” producer P3 Media has scored a seven-figure investment from Ready Entertainment, a company led by Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice A. King, and Ashley Bell.

Founded by journalist Adam Ciralsky (the inspiration for Netflix’s hit Noah Centineo-led spy thriller “The Recruit”), P3 is expanding its lineup with upcoming feature doc “The Return.” That title, produced alongside Ciralsky’s P3 partner Gene Klein, centers on the White House’s efforts to free Americans held hostage abroad. “With unprecedented access, the film chronicles high stakes and unconventional efforts to free Eyvin Hernandez, an L.A. County public defender who has been held in Venezuela since March 2022,” per P3.

“This is an extraordinary film about a remarkable individual who has been held in a foreign prison for the crime of being an American,” said King, who along with Bell will join Ciralsky and Klein as an executive producer on the film.

Elevator Game is the new film by Rebekah McKendry, a director who caught my attention with All the Creatures Were Stirring and impressed me with Glorious. On the other hand, she also has a writing credit on the dismal Bring It On: Cheer or Die. So I was a little apprehensive when she did another teen-themed film that not only shared a lot of that film’s cast but was based on an urban legend that’s about ten years past its expiration date.

Italy’s Rai Cinema, which has four titles in this year’s Cannes selection, has closed a deal on Ron Howard’s next movie, “Origin of Species,” a hot project at the Cannes market starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Ana de Armas, Jude Law and Alicia Vikander.

Rai Cinema chief Paolo Del Brocco said the company – which is the film arm of Italian state broadcaster Rai – has teamed up with Rome-based Lucisano Media Group to acquire Italian rights from CAA Media Finance on Howard’s survival thriller penned by Noah Pink (“Tetris”) about a a group of eclectics who turn their backs on civilization and head to the Galapagos.

In Cannes, Rai Cinema also picked up Italian rights from Gaumont on family movie “Moon The Panda,” by French filmmaker Gilles de Maistre, who is known for movies about human-animal relationships, such as “Mia and the White Lion” and “The Wolf and the Lion.

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was full of Easter eggs and good old-fashioned nostalgia, but it turns out that one Easter egg might actually be a hint at things to come. 

In season 3, episode 6 of "Picard" (which is titled "The Bounty"), Worf (Michael Dorn), Raffi (Michelle Hurd), and Riker (Jonathan Frakes) break into Daystrom Institute's underground warehouse to try and retrieve what remains of Data (Brent Spiner). While they're there, they see a few interesting items taken by Starfleet Intelligence, including an attack tribble and the body of one James Tiberius Kirk. We don't actually get to see Kirk, of course, just his X-ray and some basic information about him. Still, it's pretty wild to know that Starfleet went and got his body off of Veridian III (where we last saw him at the end of "Star Trek Generations").

In “The Fabelmans,” David Lynch is proclaimed by a studio executive to be “the greatest filmmaker of all time.” Sort of. Lynch plays John Ford in a scene based on director Steven Spielberg’s real-life meeting with the Western icon. But for Lynch devotees, the statement certainly rings truer with the “Twin Peaks” creator in the role.

People who like Lynch’s films don’t just watch them: they’re overtaken by them. Lynch’s surrealist instincts as a director can be divisive — he’s had some fairly high profile detractors over the years — but if it works for you, it’s likely he’s one of your all-time favorite filmmakers. The very nature of being a working actor in the film and television industry means that you're bound to work with some of the same folks more often than not. As a result, reunions both expected and unexpected tend to occur. For an example of the former, check out the episode of "Psych" entitled "Dual Spires," which reunited several cast members from "Twin Peaks" long before "The Return" happened. For an example of the latter, take Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who appeared in 2014's "Godzilla" as husband and wife and then followed that up by appearing in 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" as brother and sister.

If there’s one thing the galaxy far, far away, loves, it’s a good MacGuffin. From R2-D2’s secret Death Star plans to Sith Wayfinders, we’ve seen many of these storytelling devices over the past 46 years. Interestingly enough, The Mandalorian season 3 has just discarded one such MacGuffin in monumental style. In one fateful scene in “The Return,” showrunner Jon Favreau and executive producer Rick Famuyiwa put an end to thousands of years of Mandalorian history.

Star Wars has equally made its name on hard goodbyes, but in The Mandalorian, forget the heroic demise of Paz Vizsla, the fiery farewell of Moff Gideon, or even the realization we’ll likely never see Pedro Pascal beneath Din Djarin’s helmet again, the real loss of season 3 is the Darksaber.

Right from the very beginning, there’s always been a little fairytale DNA in Star Wars delivered a properly fairytale ending — so much so, it might as well have closed on a blue text card of its own: ‘And they all lived happily ever after.’

Probably the biggest surprise of ‘Chapter 24: The Return’ (is it a coincidence that the concluding act of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey structure is ‘Return’?) was how, well, final the finale felt. Not just as the ending of this latest arc of Din Djarin and Grogu’s tale, but of everything Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau’s show has established so far. If this wasn’t Star Wars – with its ‘no-one’s ever really gone’ continuous narrative drive — you’d be forgiven for thinking that the story was over. It took all eight episodes of Season 3 for “The Mandalorian” to find its way back to itself, which is to say, back to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his (now officially!) adopted child, Grogu. For most of Season 3, the core relationship of the series — the reason why “The Mandalorian” became an instant global phenomenon — was shunted aside in favor of tracking how Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze rallied the estranged factions of Mandalorians to take back their devastated homeworld.

Audiences have not responded kindly. Legions of reviews, tweets and YouTube videos vivisected this season of “The Mandalorian” for being “detached,” “unsatisfying,” “sloppy” and “the worst.” What had been a loose and uncomplicated story of Din and Grogu’s ongoing adventures had become instead a sprawling narrative steeped in Mandalorian lore that...

The Mandalorian season 3 finale, “The Return,” bucks a few of the series’ trends. Yes, the final boss is once again Moff Gideon, but this time, there’s no big cameo character coming to save the day just when all hope seems lost for the Mandalorians. Din, Grogu, and Bo-Katan have to defeat Gideon themselves. There’s also a surprising lack of easter eggs and callbacks, unless you wanna talk mouse droids or R5 having little jets just like R2 in Attack of the Clones. “The Return” just doesn’t deal in much nostalgia-bait, as reminiscent of Emperor Palpatine’s own plans Moff Gideon’s clone plot may seem.

Then there’s the biggest twist of all: the finale doesn’t have a post-credit scene. You can watch the end credits to the very end — and you should, a lot of talented people worked on this show!

Season 3 of "The Mandalorian" just came to a thrilling conclusion that should go down as one of the best episodes in the series and one of the most accomplished finales Star Wars has ever produced, animated or otherwise. Chapter 24, "The Return," showed Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) and The Armorer (Emily Swallow) battling Imperial Super Commandos in mid-air, a final showdown (perhaps) between Din Djarin and Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), and Grogu Force pushing a fireball just like Kanan Jarrus in "Star Wars Rebels." What more could you possibly want?

More Mandalorian armor, perhaps? Sure! The ending of "The Return" lives up to its name when the true inhabitants of Mandalore restore their home planet and reignite the Great Forge, ensuring that the ancient craftsmanship of molding and forging beskar armor will hopefully be preserved for a new generation.

We hope you’re wearing your best beskar because it’s time to dive deep into the Mines of Mandalore for The Mandalorian season 3 finale. Although there wasn’t a big finale cameo or a post-credit scene setting up the next storyline, “The Return” was a satisfying episode where old scores were settled, new bonds were formed, and things were changed forever with another major death.

It seems like an eternity ago that Din Djarin first strolled into that cantina on Pagodon, but 24 episodes later The Mandalorian feels like an integral part of the Star Wars universe. While we know season 4 is already on the way, the conclusion of the action-packed finale suggests it’ll be without Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon as its de facto big bad…or will it?
