Orlando

1 review
10/10

Brilliant

Orlando is not one of Handel's strongest plot-wise sometimes having a somewhat storybook feel to it. However, the music is simply gorgeous throughout, especially Consolatti O Bella, and the characters are compelling at least. Recorded live from D'Aix En Provence, this Orlando is a brilliant performance. Sharply recorded, with stylish orchestral playing and nuanced yet alert conducting it is definitely top-notch musically. And it is elevated even further by a superb cast. Felicity Palmer is an intense and very commanding Orlando, while Rosemary Joshua's silkily sweet and warm Angelica and Rosa Mannion's bright, lively Dorinda ideally contrasting. Jennifer Lane's dark, rich voice is perfect for the role of Medoro, and Harry Van Der Kamp particularly in Sorge Infausta as the wily Zoroastro is sonorous and suitably agile in its technique. Overall, simply brilliant and if you can find it more than worth it. 10/10 Bethany Cox
