Hugh Grant’s Missed Harry Potter Role (Photo Credit – YouTube/Facebook)
Hugh Grant might be the quintessential charming leading man known for roles in Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’s Diary, but did you know he almost joined the Harry Potter universe? Producers initially eyed Grant for the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. But instead of donning Hogwarts robes, Grant stuck to what he knew best — being the charming, witty love interest.
At the heart of this casting near-miss was a scheduling clash. Grant had to pass on The Chamber of Secrets because of his commitment to Two Weeks Notice, a 2002 rom-com alongside Sandra Bullock. Talk about a missed magical opportunity. Grant’s agent reportedly gave a different reason for his departure from the project, which sparked some behind-the-scenes confusion. Meanwhile, Harry Potter director Chris Columbus denied Hugh Grant’s potential involvement. The...

For the longest time, Hollywood seemed unable to adapt popular video games into successful, widely beloved movies. It's a sad state of affairs when Paul W.S. Anderson's films "Mortal Kombat" and "Resident Evil" were once considered the pinnacle of video game movies, as both of those films are clunky and arguably mediocre. Director Uwe Boll's many video game adaptations are often called some of the worst movies ever made, and even relative hits like "Lara Croft Tomb Raider" or "Silent Hill" aren't really held up as great cinema. It wasn't until somewhat recently that audiences would exit a video game movie and think to themselves that it wasn't that bad.
The tide really turned with the release of "Sonic the Hedgehog" in 2020. After a hugely negative reaction to Sonic's animated designs in the film's previews (including his creepily realistic human teeth), Paramount spent a great deal of...

As a wise Focker once said, "You can milk anything with nipples." But in the case of the Meet The Parents franchise, turns out you actually just need Ben Stiller playing a man called Gaylord Focker and Robert De Niro playing his ever-alert, ex-CIA Father-In-Law Jack Byrnes. And having already encompassed a whole trilogy — Meet The Parents, Meet The Fockers, and Meet The Parents: Little Fockers — to date, it looks like the time has come to enter Focker-Byrnes' circle of trust once again. Per Deadline's reporting, a fourth film in the franchise is in the works at Universal Pictures, with Stiller and De Niro in early talks to return for more farcical family shenanigans.
Plot details on the fourquel remain hush-hush, at least for now, but as well as De Niro and Stiller circling comebacks for this one, we do know that longtime franchise co-writer John Hamburg is on script duties,...

Gone are the days when Westerns ruled the box office, with superheroes now filling the role that cowboys once played in the American consciousness. But fear not, the Western genre is far from dead (which you would have known if you had read our list of the 100 Greatest Westerns of All Time). The brutality of the American West, combined with the hope that many people found in it, continues to inspire some of the most exciting filmmakers working today. It also has one of the richest histories of any genre, which allows filmmakers with a passion for Hollywood history to engage with the classics of the 20th century while updating Western tropes for modern audiences. The genre is so versatile that Westerns can reflect almost any political sentiment, meaning that Western movies tend to be an interesting barometer of the era in which they were made.

The last time Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx shared the screen, they were playing the villainous Miss Hannigan and tech billionaire-turned-adoptee Will Stacks in 2014's Annie remake. That movie musical also happens to be the last time Diaz shared the screen with, well, anyone, as the Charlie's Angels star went on a decade-long acting sabbatical following the movie's release (the two events are presumably unrelated.) But now Diaz and Foxx are back back back in the very shrewdly titled Back In Action, which is not as it happens a remake of *that* Looney Tunes movie (sadly), but rather a buzzy, Netflix bound spy comedy from writer-director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) and co-scribe Brendan O'Brien (Bad Neighbours). Check out the action-packed trailer below:
"Tonight something clicked," says Diaz' Emily to husband Matt (Foxx) at the start of this new trailer, "for the first time in a really long time I felt alive again.

I love spy movies. Realistic spy movies, unrealistic spy movies, whatever—you name it and I’m there. If the entertainment quotient isn’t undermined too much by the government propaganda, you have my curiosity and my attention. I have watched the Bond movies, the Mission: Impossible films, the Bourne movies, the Kingsman films, the Yrf Spy Universe stuff, the Jack Ryan movies, Munich, Bridge of Spies, the Spy Kids movies, and more. But for some reason, when this genre enters the small screen and takes the episodic route, it loses my attention. I liked the first season of Jack Ryan, but with every subsequent installment, it got worse. Mr. & Mrs. Smith was horrible. The difference in quality between the first and second seasons of The Family Man was hilarious. Now, we have a TV series franchise in the form of Citadel. Ironically, I have no memory of watching the...

Welcome back to the jungle! It's been a long five years since the release of Jake Kasdan's Jumanji: The Next Level back in 2019, which proved itself a more than worthy successor to the surprise critical and commercial hit that was Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. But now, at long last, we know exactly when we can expect to see Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and co getting back in the game. Per THR's reporting, Sony Pictures has set an 11 December, 2026 release date for their family adventure franchise's trilogy closing third instalment.
The core cast of the first two movies are all expected to return in the upcoming threequel, which will once again see Kasdan occupying the director's chair. And whilst we don't know who'll be joining them this time around, we do have a pretty solid idea where things are heading third time around, despite the...

Glen Powell is aptly one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood today. While his debut came way back in Spy Kids in 2003, the 35-year-old has seen multiple successful roles come his way in the last few years. Now looking forward to the release of Twisters, Powell has appeared in movies such as Anyone But You and Top Gun: Maverick, and generally finds himself in high demand.
However, that did not seem true to the actor when during his years of struggle. Powell went to his fair share of failed auditions but has never been the kind of person who would take things negatively. The actor has been utterly professional right from the start, and spent years getting rejected for a plethora of major roles.

What are some of the movies that come to mind if somebody mentions the word “siblings”? To be specific, movies with plots that hinge on the sibling dynamic instead of just having siblings in it. If you pick from the crime drama genre, there are Deewar, A Better Tomorrow, and Fiza. If you move towards the action genre, there’s Main Hoon Na, Karan Arjun, and Warrior. If you look at horror films, you’ll get Crimson Peak, Evil Dead Rise, and Nope. If fantasy is your thing, then there’s The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, the Spy Kids franchise, and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. If you are wondering about step siblings, then you have Cruel Intentions and Step Brothers. And if you want to go into the realm of taboo, you can try out Close My Eyes. On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
This September, we’re celebrating Back to School Night with four midnight movies that aren’t just academically themed but also teach the lessons essential to understanding this school of cinema.
First, read the spoiler-free bait — a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film and why we think it’s worth memorializing. After you’ve watched the movie, come back for the bite — a breakdown of all the spoiler-y moments you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.
The Bait: This Whole “Midnight Movie” Thing? It’s a Trap
Robert Rodriguez made his name on the candy-colored “Spy Kids” and the graphic novel-inspired “Sin City,” but you can see the director’s fingerprints (thumb-thumb-prints?) all over his earlier teen horror-comedy “The Faculty.”

Kids watch some terrible movies. I should know, I have two of them. A24, the independent film and TV studio that has become synonymous with quality, is out to change that.
On September 4, A24 published the 288-page “Hey Kids, Watch This!,” a collection of more than 100 movie recommendations for families. None of them, by the way, are A24 films. The curation was performed by a group of “discerning critics, animators, and directors,” according to a press release. IndieWire’s own chief film critic and reviews editor David Ehrlich contributed a primer on how to talk about movies with your kids.
“Hey Kids, Watch This!” covers both hits and deep cuts. How deep? Has your preschooler seen Yuri Norstein’s 10-minute short film from 1975, “Hedgehog in the Fog”? Right, mine neither. Are the ’70s not ancient enough for your young-Old-Hollywood head? How about the 100-year-old film “The Adventures of Prince Achmed” from German director Lotte Reiniger?...

Any actor starting out in the film industry goes through harsh times before crossing over to the other side. But not all actors get to go to the other side, only the boldest of bold go on to accomplish such a feat. For instance, it wasn’t until Sylvester Stallone boldly wrote his own film, Rocky, that he ascended to Hollywood legend status. And so it was for Glen Powell.

In the American indie explosion of the 1990s, few filmmakers had a more compelling story than Robert Rodriguez. The Texan communications major had spent his time in college crafting homemade shorts and parlayed his enthusiasm into a feature he funded by raising a paltry $9,000, most of it gained from signing up for pharmaceutical drug tests. Shooting in the northern Mexican town of Ciudad Acuña, Rodriguez managed to push El Mariachi past the finish line under budget, pocketing nearly two grand of his meager put-up cash. Initially aiming to release the neo-western action film directly to the Spanish-language VHS market, Rodriguez got up the chutzpah to submit it to major Hollywood studios, one of which, Columbia Pictures, bought the rights and secured festival and theatrical exhibition.

The James Bond jetpack sequence in “Thunderball” (1965) was a cheesy-awesome thing that was like, “Whoa! The future will be jetpacks!” “My Spy the Eternal City” opens like a Bond film, or maybe a movie whose goal is to make the “Kingsman” series look weighty. Dave Bautista’s JJ, a former Special Forces soldier turned CIA operative, is on a private plane, where he’s playing bodyguard to a teen idol named Ryan (Bill Barratt). Out of the blue, he’s attacked by the flight attendant. As they go at each other with sharp objects, a helmeted figure zips through the sky in a jetpack, placing a bomb on one of the plane’s windows and blowing a hole in its side; everyone comes tumbling out, and a plunging-to-the-earth scuffle ensues.

“Avatar” star Saldaña remembered Landau in an Instagram post, writing, “Words are hard to put together right now, your passing is hitting really hard. You are leaving us too soon, my thoughts are with you and your family right now. Your wisdom and support shaped so many of us in ways we will always be grateful for. The memories we shared together will always hold a special place in my heart. Your legacy will continue to inspire us and guide us in our journey. Rest in peace, dear Jon. You will be deeply missed.”
Worthington, who plays Jake Sully in the “Avatar” film series, referenced the Na’vi (The People) from the sci-fi franchise in his tribute to Landau.

The filmmaking process in Hollywood has evolved drastically over the past few decades, a fact underscored by Antonio Banderas as he reflected on insights from producer, Steven Spielberg, during the making of the 1998 action-adventure hit, The Mask of Zorro. Glen Powell is having a moment. Propelled by the box office success of "Anyone But You," and its subsequent streaming domination, the most handsome man you've ever seen is slowly taking over Hollywood. His Richard Linklater-directed Netflix film "Hitman" quickly conquered the streamer's charts when it debuted in June, and Powell will soon guide us all into the eye of the suck zone with the upcoming blockbuster legacy sequel "Twisters." Soon after, Powell will face what might be his biggest test yet in Edgar Wright's upcoming adaptation of "The Running Man." But considering the man's resilience — his first film role was in the more-than 20-year-old "Spy Kids 3" — he should be up to the challenge.
It hasn't been an easy road from "Spy Kids" to leading man, however. Take "Misconduct" for instance. You've likely never heard of this 2016 legal thriller, which is probably for the best considering the...

At 35, Glen Powell has quickly risen to fame as one of Hollywood’s currently most desired faces. The acclaimed actor, with his acting prowess and stunning physique, quickly gained prominence following his breakout role in the comedy-horror Scream Queens and arguably one of his most passionate projects yet alongside Tom Cruise in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick.
However, he already had one of his foot into the showbiz territory as far back as when he was 13 with a role in a now cult-classic franchise.

Raven Banner Entertainment will launch international sales at the Cannes Film Market for Steven Kostanski’s latest feature “Frankie Freako.”
Kostanski’s previous feature “Psycho Goreman” premiered at SXSW in 2020 and gathered a cult following worldwide. Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Owen Gleiberman described the film as “‘The Toxic Avenger’ remade by the Robert Rodriguez of ‘Spy Kids.'”
“Frankie Freako” is described by Raven Banner as Kostanki’s homage to the practical-fx-driven monster horror-comedies of the 1980s like “Gremlins 2” and “Ghoulies 3: Ghoulies Go to College.” It tells the story of workaholic yuppie Conor Sweeney whose perfect life is turned upside down when he accidentally unleashes a trio of tiny trouble-makers into his home, led by the maniacal rock-n-roll party monster Frankie Freako. It’s a race against time as Conor must defeat the trio and clean up their trail of destruction before his wife returns from her weekend work trip,...

I’ve predicted Megalopolis, anticipated as it is, will have a clear dividing point: the cultural commentariat hoping to see “another film by the director of The Godfather” and those who appreciate “something that looks and sounds like a Star Wars prequel.” I am very firmly in the latter, was duly excited by the first image, and can only be pleased with the time-stopping debut teaser, arriving today via Le Pacte.
It comes with a sad addenedum. Coppola, sharing the teaser on Instagram, noted:
Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf.

We all know that Danny Trejo has spent time in prison, with a criminal record going back to his youth and extending into the ‘60s, long before he got his acting going. And it was during one of his latter stints that Trejo came across a fella who had yet to get his music career off the ground: none other than Charles Manson, who himself was a career criminal when the two encountered each other. Fortunately, Trejo took a considerably different path than being responsible for maybe the most notorious murders of the century…but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a unique experience with the cult leader.
Danny Trejo recalled meeting Charles Manson in the early ‘60s and even offering him protection. In turn, Manson introduced Trejo to the ways of hypnosis. “There were three people in my cell, and when we found out Charlie could hypnotize us,...

First, some context. Trejo recently told Rob Zombie in Interview that he was under the impression that Rodriguez had sold the rights to Machete “to Russians or something,” thus halting the project permanently.
But Rodriguez quickly rebuked this, telling IndieWire that his old pal isn’t exactly up to date on his info. “I retain all the rights…We do plan to make another one, we just stopped saying that we are until we’re actually making it because of all the stories that come out saying, ‘They’re making it right now, they’re making it right now!’” With that, Rodriguez noted the connection he has to Machete, something no doubt shared by fans.

Speaking with BuzzFeed, Gugino, now 52, talked about co-starring with Antonio Banderas in the original three movies, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Thy were spies whose children (Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara) are also called into action.
“It is so funny because I was 27,” Gugino recalled. “It was a really beautiful kind of double-edged sword because I love that movie so much. And the whole experience was incredible, and the movies continue.”

Carla Gugino recently told BuzzFeed that her beloved role in Robert Rodriguez’s 2001 family action film “Spy Kids” was “physically totally impossible.” The actor was 27 years old when she filmed the movie and played Ingrid Cortes, the mother of two spies. By Gugino’s math, the character didn’t add up.
“It is so funny because I was 27,” Gugino recounted. “It was a really beautiful kind of double-edged sword because I love that movie so much. And the whole experience was incredible, and the movies continue.”

Carla Gugino said she is still trying to figure out how she was cast as a mother of two school-age children at 27 years old in the original Spy Kids movie.
During a recent interview with BuzzFeed, the actress, who played Ingrid Cortes, looked back at her time filming the 2001 movie, alongside Antonio Banderas, Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara. The action-adventure film, directed by Robert Rodriguez, followed a family of spies.

Turns out, Danny Trejo actually might be wielding a machete soon, as the eponymous franchise is still on track to be a trilogy. During a recent discussion with Rob Zombie for Interview magazine, the almost-80-year-old actor Trejo incorrectly stated that “Machete” and “Machete Kills” director Robert Rodriguez “sold part” of the franchise, and therefore it’s unlikely another will be made.
“God, I guess Robert [Rodriguez] screwed up and sold part of ‘Machete,'” Trejo said, “to Russians or something. Everyone always asks, ‘When are you doing “Machete Kills in Space?”‘” Director Zombie added that he’d love to see “Machete Kills in Space,” saying, “I thought for sure it was going to happen. It’s so ridiculous.”
However, Rodriguez exclusively told IndieWire that Trejo’s comments are thankfully “incorrect” and a third “Machete” film may still slice up cinemas soon.
“I retain all the rights,” Rodriguez told IndieWire in an email.
