Golden Globe Award-winning actor Kevin Bacon has set his next horror movie after starring in the smash-hit A24 slasher MaXXXine, and it's about to be an entire family affair. Bacon, his Emmy Award-winning wife Kyra Sedgwick, and their two adult children, Travis and Sosie Bacon, will star together in a new horror-comedy titled Family Movie.
The talented family will produce this film for Mixed Breed Films in collaboration with Norman Golightly at Dark Castle Entertainment. Dark Castle is best known for being behind other horror movies such as House on Haunted Hill, House of Wax, Orphan and Orphan: First Kill. Besides Family Movie, Dark Castle is currently working on a third Orphan movie.
Neon International will handle the foreign rights and present the horror-comedy at the American Film Market this week, while CAA Media Finance will manage the U.S. rights. Besides producing and starring in the movie, Bacon and Sedgwick will also direct.

Twenty five years ago, on October 29, 1999, Dark Castle Entertainment launched with a remake of William Castle’s The House on Haunted Hill. Penned by Dick Beebe from Robb White’s original 1959 story and directed by William Malone, the 1999 remake relocated to a foreboding psychiatric hospital for its haunted setting. This time the ghosts were very real and very vengeful. At the center of it all, though, was a very inspired performance by Geoffrey Rush. One that deserves a space in horror’s hall of fame.
Rush played amusement park mogul Steven Price, the rich host to his wife’s birthday party that offers up $1,000,000 to anyone who can endure a night-long stay in the haunted hospital. This was the precise same role Vincent Price played in the 1959 original film, and the character was renamed in reference. The irony, though, is that Steven Price wasn’t initially meant to look like...

A few months ago, Paramount and Miramax announced that they are reviving the Scary Movie horror parody series to bring a Scary Movie 6 to theatres sometime in 2025 – and that announcement has inspired us to go back and revisit the earlier entries in the franchise. Last month, we covered the original Scary Movie, and now time for Scary Movie 2 (watch it Here) to get the Revisited treatment. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.
Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans from a screenplay written by the team of Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Alyson Fouse, Greg Grabianski, Dave Polsky, Michael Anthony Snowden, and Craig Wayans, Scary Movie 2 has the following synopsis: As the supernatural extension of the first film, Scary Movie 2 casts its satirical eye on such iconic classics as The Exorcist, House on Haunted Hill, and Poltergeist, as well as the more recent films Hannibal and What Lies Beneath.

Back in the late 90s, a handful of powerful Hollywood producers set out on what was then a very exciting venture for genre fans: Dark Castle Entertainment, a production company dedicated to making medium-budget horror movies with A-list casts. Inspired by the legacy of beloved 50s schlockmeister William Castle, Dark Castle was going to remake some of the producer-director’s most famous works, like House on Haunted Hill and 13 Ghosts, in addition to focusing on original material. These movies weren’t going to be cheapies like Castle’s were – they’d have substantial budgets for the genre, top-tier creative teams behind the camera, and recognizable faces from film and television in front.. It was an inspired idea, and though now we look back on the venture with bittersweet memories, Dark Castle definitely left its mark on the horror genre. Calling Warner Bros. its home, Dark Castle had put out...

From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

We’re zapping into science fiction territory and back into “re-adaptation” conversations this month for Revenge of the Remakes. Don Siegel and Philip Kaufman bring vastly different approaches to their Invasion of the Body Snatchers films, uniformly citing Jack Finney’s 1954 novel “The Body Snatchers” as their source. Kaufman isn’t directly remaking Siegel’s film but acknowledges its existence multiple times; there’s a literary influence behind both features, yet Kaufman can’t ignore what already exists. The same conversation arose in my The Fly analysis, and will assuredly surface again down the road. Invasion of the Body Snatchers can’t help itself from being a remake, and with decades apart, Kaufman evolves the product into a contemporary extraterrestrial nightmare (speaking for the late 1970s).
Everything about Invasion of the Body Snatchers showcases how cinematic advancements benefit remakes like The Blob or House on Haunted Hill, reimaginings of classics...

I was never a huge fan of Jean Grey until Famke Janssen took on the role in 2000. The former Bond Girl and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos were my main reasons for going to see the movie in the first place. Remember, at this time, we only had a couple of good comic book movies, and the mutants were a considerable gamble for Fox.
Needless to say, Famke Janssen and the rest of the cast blew it out of the water. The X-Men franchise managed to carry on for over two decades with lots of spinoffs, semi-reboots, and more. So, one would think that Janssen would want to once again return to the role of the powerful telepathic.
Well, much like Vinny Jones, we’re losing another cameo. Famke Janssen has clearly stated that she won’t be reuniting with Hugh Jackman in the Fox X-Men universe and MCU.

As Screenlife storytelling transitions into the livestream era, movies like Michelle Iannantuono’s Livescreamers have me most excited. Early Screenlife films like Unfriended and The Den read like one-takers but are computer-set events like someone recorded their computer monitor or laptop screen. What Livescreamers offers — or examples like Spree, Deadstream, and #chadgetstheaxe — is the propulsive energy of a continuous stream devolving into chaos. Creators who put on celebrity identities face dreadful realities, not the protective online bubbles they’ve built where their antics draw millions of views. Livescreamers cherrypicks elements of Stay Alive, House on Haunted Hill, Unfriended, and cringy video game playthrough streams to create something horrifying that both sells its chills and comments on the vulnerable current state of livestream culture.
Low-budget restraints might hold back specific effects, and the film’s narrative throughline is a little wonky in spots, but what Iannantuono accomplishes comes from a place of authenticity.

Whether you love or hate them, remakes have been around for a long time, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. An update on The Crow is set to arrive this summer, with Hollywood’s version of Speak No Evil not far behind, just as two upcoming examples.
While not all remakes can hold a candle to the original, there’s been no shortage of fantastic movies that reworked genre favorites in thrilling new ways. Some of which even managed to eclipse the original classics, like 1986’s The Fly or 1982’s The Thing.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror remakes that set themselves apart from the source material, either through expanded storytelling or heightened, visceral horror.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

A spinoff of the film franchise, “Freddy’s Nightmares” was an anthology series starring the original Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund. Airing from 1988 to 1990, each episode told a different story of a dark rooted and grim nature that takes place in this fictitious town on Elm Street, and now a brand new book will take us deeper into the series than ever before.
Death Cult Press has announced Welcome to Primetime from authors Geoff Turner, Henrique Couto and David Denover, up for pre-order now ahead of April 1, 2024 release.
“This collection features breakdowns of each episode in the series, interviews with the show’s creators and a selected history of the bizarre world of horror anthology television.”
You can pre-order three different book bundles from Death Cult Press now.
“Freddy’s Nightmares” picked up with where the films left off, with Krueger terrorizing the citizens of his hometown and taking his revenge out through their dreams.

Back in the late 90’s, early 2000s the horror genre was in that weird phase of encapsulating what it truly wanted to be. Hot off the heels of Scream, horror movies focused much more on the teenage angst, and lifestyle. But there comes a time when some hidden gems make their way to the silver screen that branch off the beaten path with a more adult-themed tale, drenched in psychological/mental horror. What if one day you’re living your average life, working your 9-5, and suddenly black, out only to wake up, institutionalized and accused of committing a crime you can’t seem to remember doing? Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film "Psycho" famously employed a gimmick in its advertising to set it apart from the thrillers of the day. Movie posters and other print ads featured pictures of Hitchcock himself, pointing to his wristwatch, declaring that audiences watch "Psycho" from the very beginning, or face ejection from the theater. This came at a time when many theaters were still operating by a non-scheduled system, showing a well-moneyed "A" feature, followed by cartoons, shorts, newsreels, commercials, and a cheaper "B" feature. This is where we get the term "B movie" from. The cycle would then repeat. You could spend four or five hours in the theater if you wanted to. The entire loop would then repeat, and you could catch up with the movie on its second go-'round. This is where we get the phrase, "This is where we came in."
Hitchcock, of course, was repeating the sensationalist gimmicks of William Castle,...

1999, a year of hope, a year of high fashion, nooo, no… 1999, the year when people prepared for Y2K, the year of all the odd choices when it came to fashion, and the year of interesting cinematic options. We got The Mummy which gave us all the hot cast members we could ask for and still gives us memes, we got End of Days, Stigmata, Idle Hands, House on Haunted Hill, The Haunting, Stir of Echoes, and The Blair Witch Project. It was a year for surprising hits, shocking failures, and offbeat horror films. So many smaller budgets did so well. Also out in 1999 was this movie about cannibalism in the olden days of the United States,...

Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, who brought Sonya Blade to life in 1995’s Mortal Kombat and proved the object of Billy Madison’s juvenile affection, has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
In a statement, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras’ husband, tennis legend Pete Sampras, wrote, “This past year has been an exceptionally challenging time for my family…Last December, my wife, Bridgette, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Since then, she has had major surgery, pushed through chemotherapy and continues with targeted maintenance therapy…It is hard to watch someone you love go through a challenge like this. However, seeing our boys step up and be such strong supports of Bridgette, myself and each other has been amazing. Watching Bridgette continue to be an incredible mom and wife through it all has been inspiring.”
That Bridgette Wilson-Sampras was diagnosed nearly one year ago shows just how difficult it must be for her and her family to discuss the topic openly.

The retired Rms Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, California is considered one of the most haunted locations in the world — which only somewhat shines through in Gary Shore’s Haunting of the Queen Mary. Any wishes to relive Dark Castle Entertainment levels of production design in Ghost Ship won’t be fulfilled, but that said, Haunting of the Queen Mary is more successful than its brushed-under-the-rug release undersells. Shore and co-writer Tom Vaughan channel the Queen Mary’s grave history for a supernatural infestation that spans decades, complete with atmospheric haunts akin to what’s accomplished in remakes of Thir13en Ghosts or House on Haunted Hill. Proper spookiness prevails, even though the over two-hour length gunks up the film’s gears with subplots that slow momentum.
Alice Eve stars as Anne Calder, who pitches Queen Mary’s Captain Bittner (Dorian Lough) on a virtual 3D tour experience to resurrect the ship’s reputation.

Justin Simien’s Haunted Mansion, with the bright purple and radiant turquoise vapor trails of whatever smoke machine was used during production, handily invokes the campiness of the iconic Disneyland attraction, if not its kinetics. But while several set pieces move along with surprising alacrity and humor, Katie Dippold’s script drowns in exposition and lore-building, at times drawing distracting comparison to her work on the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot.

The Halloween episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Eric Walkuski, Narrated and Edited by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
In 1978, the landscape of horror changed forever with the release of John Carpenter’s Halloween (watch it Here). Jumping off from a very simple premise, Carpenter crafted a vision of terror unlike anything that had been seen before. Though there were movies not unlike it prior to its release, Halloween’s success would inspire a brand new subgenre: the slasher film, and while there have been many imitations – not to mention sequels and remakes – few horror movies have achieved the kind of glowing praise and reverence that the original Halloween has. Not to mention the fact that it introduced us to one of the most infamous screen villains of all time, Michael Myers, the unstoppable killer without a conscience.

Welcome to the early 2000s, when horror was loud, in your face, and not worried about a thing! Horror fans were spoiled with theatrical releases happening regularly, so much so that some weeks saw more than one big horror title opening on the big screen at the same time. Fans were treated to everything, including serial killers, slashers, ghosts, and aliens. There was a bit of everything for everyone, but in pure early 2000s style, a lot of films were all style, all gore, and all fun. This was the only way to follow the late 1990s and their revival of many sub-genres and careers. Thir13en Ghosts (watch it Here) was and still is, easily one of the...

I love going to the theater. I mean, who doesn’t? The chance to see a great horror movie up on the biggest screen possible is one of the simplest pleasures in life. And now there’s a bevy of options to see your movie in such as RealD 3D, Dolby, IMAX, and Laser Projection. Premium Formats, they call them, and I have experienced almost every single format out there.
But one in particular always eluded me for various reasons: 4Dx.
What exactly is 4Dx?
4Dx is a premium format that allows films to be projected with various practical effects like rain, wind, strobe lighting and motion-seats. The goal is to fully immerse the audience in the movie and the effects allow for recreations of various effects seen on screen. For example: a character standing in the rain on screen will cause the...

Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout the first five films of the Scream franchise.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
This guide will exclude homages from previous Scream films and their respective sequels— we’re only looking at outside horror franchises and inspirations, because any red-blooded Ghostface fan is likely already aware of those. (Goes without saying that the beloved faux franchise ‘Stab’(s) 1-8 will also not be counted, since, even though our neon green ‘Stab’ t-shirts and mock VHS tapes feel very real, it’s still a very fake franchise). If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

In addition to FeardotCom, the 2002 effort from director William Malone (House on Haunted Hill) that stars Stephen Dorff (Blade), the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox has also revved up the streaming rights to Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, the 1990 sequel starring Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings) and Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead)!
In the film, “Two college students driving coast to coast are lured off the main highway and onto a deserted Texas road. Here they are stalked by the menacing Leatherface and his demented family…a bizarre cannibalistic clan with blood on their hands and a feast on their minds. The students’ only chance for escape is a survivalist with enough firepower to blast Leatherface and the rest of the grisly predators to hell. A depraved shocker of intense terror from the gruesome beginning to the bloody finish.”

William Malone, a Master of Horror behind such films as Creature, House on Haunted Hill, and Parasomnia, once took a stab at mixing early internet tech with horror in FeardotCom, which starred Stephen Dorff and was released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures in 2002.
The film has been making a bit of a resurgence and maybe even having a renaissance with horror fans newly appreciating the much-maligned techy horror film that followed Dorff as a New York City detective who investigates mysterious deaths occurring 48 hours after users log onto feardotcom.
Now, you can judge for yourself as FeardotCom is streaming exclusively on Screambox today, alongside Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, the 1990 sequel starring Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings) and Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead)!
