Without hyperbole, Michael Patrick Jann ("The State") and Lona Williams' ("Sugar & Spice") mockumentary comedy film about a small-town Minnesota beauty pageant is my favorite comedy film, ever. As a former teenage Midwest beauty queen myself, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" speaks to me on a religious level. My blood is not red, it is Mount Rose, and I am an American Teen Princess Pageant girl for life. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" turns 25 this year — one of the many teen girl masterpieces released in 1999 — but is still criminally underseen due to the film's poor box office performance at the time of release and subsequent years of physical releases being out of print. It's a shame because the cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams (her debut role!), Alexandra Holden, Nora Dunn, Mo Gaffney, Will Sasso, Matt Malloy, Mike McShane, Mindy Sterling, Sam McMurray, and...

Over the past three decades, sketch comedy group The State has created an MTV series, a comedy album, a book, and a CBS special in addition to several spinoff projects like Reno 911!, Viva Variety, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, Risk!, and Children’s Hospital. But the logistics of bringing the large troupe back together for a tour were always too daunting to even consider until just a few months ago when the SAG strike cleared off their calendars for the foreseeable future.

Charlotte Moore, chief content officer at the BBC, has defended the decision of screenwriter Steven Knight, best known for “Peaky Blinders,” to spice up Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” in his television adaptation, now airing on the British broadcaster, and streaming on Hulu in the U.S.
Referring to a sadomasochism scene in the show, in which a naked Mr. Pumblechook (played by Matt Berry) is seen being whipped by housewife-turned-dominatrix Mrs. Gargery (played by Hayley Squires), Moore said that Knight “believes absolutely everything [in the show] comes from what was alluded to” by Dickens in the novel.
Moore, speaking Thursday to the Broadcasting Press Guild in London, added that “you have to really understanding what [Dickens] would have felt able to write about [in the Victorian era] and read between the lines.”
Another of Knight’s embellishments in the show is that Miss Havisham, played by Olivia Colman, is portrayed as a sadistic opium addict.

Steve McQueen has warned that people may be “disturbed” by his new film, Grenfell, which will be shown at London’s Serpentine Gallery next month.
The 12 Years a Slave director made the 24-minute film six months after the June 2017 fire at Grenfell Tower in North Kensington, in which 72 people died.
After garnering the support of the bereaved, survivors and other locals, McQueen took off in a helicopter from the north-west in December of that year and flew towards the tower, directing the whole piece in a single shot.
The film sees McQueen’s camera repeatedly circle the council block, offering viewers a look inside rooms where people died. Forensic investigators can be seen in the footage, sifting through the site.
Speaking to The Guardian about the film, McQueen said: “You must understand that the violence that was inflicted on that community was no joke. I didn’t want to let people off the hook.

Saturday Night Live is the show everyone thinks of when they think about sketch comedy. Though not the first and certainly not the last, SNL has been on NBC live since 1975. So it has dominated a lot of pop culture real estate. If you are looking for more sketch comedy with a different point of view, or just a different cast, here are 12 other options.

The BBC has commissioned a factual drama about the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire in which 72 people died.
Grenfell, which has been written by Bafta-winning Wolf Hall and The State screenwriter Peter Kosminsky, draws from more than five years of research and hours of public testimony.
The three-part series will give a comprehensive account of the events leading up to, during, and after the tragedy.
An inquiry into the catastrophe found that cladding on the building helped the fire spread as it was made from highly flammable material.
The new drama will be told from multiple perspectives, and will explore the impact of the blaze on survivors, the loved ones of those who died, the firefighters at the scene, and the wider London community.
“Occasionally, events occur in our national story which touch us all. The fire at Grenfell Tower is such an event,” said Kosminsky in a statement.

When the seminal British TV program "Monty Python's Flying Circus" was still on the air (1969 - 1974), it wasn't yet reaching a massive international audience. To facilitate the show's spread, a feature film consisting of re-staged sketches from the show's first two seasons -- called "And Now for Something Completely Different" -- was released in England in 1971. That film is certainly funny, although it lacks the comedic magic of the TV show.
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" was put into production after "Flying Circus" went off the air. The special features for the film's 2001 DVD release featured vintage footage of late cast member Graham Chapman explaining that the troupe had been working on a script -- pointedly absurd, natch -- that was set partially in the Middle Ages and partially in the present day. After some discussion, the Pythons came up with the King Arthur/Holy Grail angle, knowing that...

A version of this story about Michael Showalter and “The Dropout” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Back when Michael Showalter was a cast member of MTV’s “The State,” or the co-writer and star of “Wet Hot American Summer,” or the creator of the series “Search Party,” you wouldn’t necessarily have picked him as a candidate to be the first director to guide one actress to an Oscar win and another to an Emmy win in the same year. The story is set in the near future, when tens of thousands of species are going extinct every year, and a whole industry has sprung up around their extinctions, to help preserve the remnants, or just assuage humankind’s guilt (depending how you look at it).
Humanity’s last hope is the biobanks, impregnable vaults where the DNA of every organism can be preserved forever, until one day an audacious cyberattack obliterates them in their entirety.
In the aftermath, a troubled conservationist and a crooked mining exec must team up in search of the venomous lumpsucker, a lost fish that they both desperately need to save.

Exclusive: Lionsgate bought a whopper of a spec package in Wayland. In competition, Lionsgate took the spec script by Simon Kinberg off the table with a progress to production commitment to make the movie. Jessica Chastain will produce, and her The Eyes of Tammy Faye helmer Michael Showalter will direct. Production is eyed for next year.
Wayland is an ensemble drama thriller that has shades of A Simple Plan and Knives Out. Kinberg will produce with Audrey Chon (who runs his Genre Films shingle), and Chastain and Kelly Carmichael (who runs her Freckle Films shingle). Showalter will be executive producer. Chastain would certainly be welcomed to be among the ensemble cast if she wants, but right now her commitment is as producer.
This is only the second spec Kinberg wrote in the last 20 years since he broke on the scene with his spec Mr. & Mrs. Smith and then got busy writing and producing blockbusters.

At almost the exact same time in the fall of 2015 that he sold a handsome, early 20th-century limestone-faced townhouse in Brooklyn’s Lefferts Manor neighborhood for $1.6 million, hardworking Hollywood multi-hyphenate Michael Showalter plunked down not quite $1.65 million for a 1940s traditional in L.A.’s Studio City that, after extensive updates and upgrades, has popped back up for sale at a sliver under $2.3 million.

In a powerful alliance, Paris-based premium kids content producer Cottonwood Media, German public broadcaster Zdf and its co-pro and distribution arm Zdf Enterprises, HBO Max and Brazil’s Globo are teaming to produce “Theodosia,” a big new live action kids adventure series targeting family audiences.
No budget is given for the 26-part half hour series. Its combination, however, of elements which make for high-end entertainment – period costume, action and foreseeable heavy Vxf – suggest this is another big play by two of Europe’s champions of ambitious live-action kids shows.
One is Cottonwood Media, the kids and family production company at Paris and L.A -based Federation Entertainment whose credits include Studiocanal’s Cannes 2019 pre-sales movie hit “Around the World in 80 Days,” to be screened at Berlin.

We are just days away from the highly-anticipated debut of Netflix's adaptation of Fate: The Winx Saga.
The series is adapted from the Italian animated series Winx Club, which aired for four seasons (2004–2009) before nabbing a revival at Nickelodeon for four more (2011–2019).
This live-action iteration chronicles the “coming-of-age journey of five fairies attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld where they must learn to master their powers while navigating love, rivalries, and the monsters that threaten their very existence.”
The trailer certainly shows off how the show is set up, and it looks like the lovechild of Legacies and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is funny because it features a cast member from the latter.
The good news is that the series will be a quick binge, spanning six episodes in its opening season, and there is scope for it to continue.

Green Door’s comedy series “In the Long Run” had a successful run on pay TV operator Sky, and the company’s Netflix-acquired feature film “Concrete Cowboy” is due a Spring 2021 premiere. Green Door is also due to begin production on the BBC non-scripted series “Fight School,” co-produced with WorkerBee. Through the partnership with Archery, Green Door intends to ramp up its development and production capabilities in keeping with its current growth trajectory.

British actor Amir El-Masry has been ubiquitous on international screens in the last five years, but like most Arab actors in the U.K., he’s reached his threshold for backward stereotypes, and is trying to forge his own narrative in the industry.
Born in Egypt but raised in the U.K., El-Masry, who leads Ben Sharrock’s refugee drama and festival darling “Limbo,” graduated from the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (Lamda) in 2013 to an industry whose reckoning around race and representation was still years away.

How time flies when the world's gone mad. Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were killed outside the front door of her Los Angeles condo while her children slept upstairs in June of 1994, a sickening crime that led to one of the defining cultural happenings of the late 20th century: People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson. The O.J. Simpson murder trial, that is. Within days after the double murder of O.J.'s ex-wife and her friend Goldman, who was a waiter at the restaurant where Nicole had dined with her family earlier that night and had dropped by to bring her the glasses her mother had left behind, a whole new vernacular rocketed into the national...

After several attempts to revive Reno 911!, Thomas Lennon finally pulled it off, partnering with Quibi for a seventh season and earning his first Emmy nomination, right as he “slipped under and turned 50.”
Created by and starring Lennon, Kerri Kenney and Robert Ben Garant, the Reno-set series is a spoof of law enforcement documentary programs—most notably, the now-canceled Cops. Centered on violent, profane, drug-abusing officers, Reno 911! is a show without a soapbox, but it nonetheless poses a question that Lennon finds to be more relevant than ever in 2020: “Are these people supposed to be cops?”
From the actor and screenwriter’s perspective, the series’ cancellation by Comedy Central in 2009 was oddly premature. Nonetheless, in the new medium of short-form, he’s found that it’s truly come into the height of its powers.

Kerri Kenney-Silver is very matter-of-fact in saying that no one on the cast of “Reno 911!” wanted to stop doing the show when it was cancelled on Comedy Central 11 years ago. “When the idea came around, ‘Hey, let’s maybe do this again,’ everybody jumped for it,” said Kenney-Silver in our recent webchat (watch the video above). She did single out two people who were the biggest cheerleaders of the revival. One was Doug Herzog, who originally bought the pilot for Fox, then again when he moved to Comedy Central and did so once more when he moved over to Quibi. The other was Emmy nominee Niecy Nash. “Every few years, she’d call or text Tom [Lennon] or Ben [Garant] or I and say, ‘Okay, are we gonna do this again? Let’s do this again.’” Nash would also drop hints about a revival during press interviews as well.

Ever since MTV’s The State went off the air in 1995, the 11-member sketch comedy troupe has faced the same problem every time it tries to reform: Finding the time when every member can commit to a project is virtually impossible. That finally changed earlier this year when the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the entire entertainment industry and left this particular creative group at home with little to do.
