You So Crazy helped Martin Lawrence breakout during the early 1990s. The film went on to become a success for this slightly controversial comedian, generating over $10,000,000 at the box office.

Not only was the film a surprise hit despite being released as unrated, it also propelled Martin Lawrence to stardom and also led to his casting in "Bad Boys" with fellow TV star Will Smith which would begin filming during the Summer of 1994 and make them into bigger stars.

The footage originally received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA, causing the film's original distributor Miramax (who was owned by Disney at the time) to sell it to Samuel Goldwyn, which released it as an Unrated film.

Just as the film was about to be released, Miramax asked Lawrence to cut down alot the tone of the film in order to get an R-rating. Lawrence fought for the film to be released as it was completely uncensored and was happy to take an NC-17 rating because he felt if let the Weinstein's water it down the rating they wanted, then they would censor what he had to say. The film was sold to Samuel Goldwyn and released uncut and unrated theatrically and was a box office hit in this form.

Before this film was released, Martin Lawrence appeared on Saturday Night Live on February 19. 1994 and was promptly banned from the show for much of the material that was was featured of this film, especially in regards to "femnine hygiene" which offend fans of the show and the shows censors along with NBC. Then in a recent interview, Lawrence talked about the ban and stated that "I don't give a damn. I'm not banned from SNL. They banned me from NBC at the time for a minute," Lawrence continued. "But then they realized the way it went down wasn't what they thought and then they sent me an apology letter."
