Demi Moore is sharing one of the main things she looks for before taking on any role or project.
The actress made a recent appearance on Hot Ones, where host Sean Evans asked her to expand on her previous comments about The Substance script potentially being “something extraordinary or could be an absolute disaster.”
“It really means that it was holding something that was worth the risk,” Moore said of her recent body horror film, which saw her play Elisabeth, opposite Margaret Qualley’s Sue.
The G.I. Jane actress continued, “And I felt that way also about Ghost because it had so many different genres mixed together that, truly, I thought, ‘This could either be amazing or a fucking disaster.’ Either way, it’s usually the kind of juice that says, ‘Step in. Take the risk. Roll the dice. Let’s see what happens.’”

Demi Moore has a tried-and-true approach when choosing her next film roles — and it might not be what you think.
The veteran actress appeared on a recent episode of Sean Evans’ popular Hot Ones video interview series, revealing that a certain degree of risk is crucial to the projects she takes on — including this year’s buzzy body horror flick The Substance and even her seminal hit Ghost.
“It really means that it was holding something that was worth the risk,” Moore said when asked by Evans what she meant when she previously commented that The Substance script may yield “something extraordinary or could be an absolute disaster.”

“Gladiator II” (Paramount) is expected to gross over $60 million when it open this week in the U.S./Canada. If so, that will be a strong start for Ridley Scott’s 29th feature in his 45-year career.
With a budget reported to be somewhere around $250 million-$300 million, it will need all of that and more. While this may be his fourth film to cost over over $200 million (adjusting to current dollar value), “Gladiator II” appears to be the highest spend of Scott’s career.
It’s also the record expense for a director over 80. Paramount’s decision to entrust Scott clearly speaks to his past performances, particularly internationally.
We surveyed all 28 previous Scott features, calculating their grosses and budgets at 2024 values. And while a $60 million “Gladiator II” opening would be a record on paper, that only works if you don’t adjust his track record to current dollars and ticket prices.

“At my signal, unleash hell.” For those of us that were alive back in the year 2000 and avid movie fans, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was an event. While historical dramas aren’t especially rare nowadays, back then, they were relatively rare. Sure, there was the occasional Braveheart or Rob Roy, but they weren’t considered a bankable genre. Yet, that all changed when director Ridley Scott, whose career was at a low ebb following the failure of almost every movie he made in the 90s decided to revive the so-called “sword and sandal” genre with a gritty, lavish redux of the historical epic.
In the fifties and sixties, these types of movies were commonplace, although in movies like The Robe or Ben-Hur, they usually told biblical tales. That changed a little with Spartacus, El Cid, and The Fall of the Roman Empire, but before long the genre was considered a...

Demi Moore, whose performance in Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance” as been praised as Oscar-worthy, will receive a career tribute at the French Cinematheque in Paris on Nov. 5, ahead of the movie’s local release.
The day-long retrospective and tribute are being co-hosted by Mubi, the global arthouse distributor and streamer which has successfully released the bold and bloody movie in the U.S., the U.K., Latin America, German and most other international territories, as well as Metropolitan which handles the French theatrical release, and the French Cinematheque.
The feminist body-horror movie stars Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a recently fired daytime-tv who uses a black market drug that creates a younger version of herself, with dangerous side effects.
Underscoring Mubi’s big theatrical push, the movie already ranks as an indie hit, having grossed $53.6 million worldwide since its Sept. 20 release, including $14.5 million in North America. It’s Mubi’s biggest B.

Viggo Mortensen is a three-time Oscar nominated performer who has been very picky with his projects, appearing only in a handful of movies in a 30-plus year career. But how many of his titles hold up as classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958 in New York City, Mortensen made his big screen debut with a brief performance as an Amish farmer in “Witness” (1985). Supporting roles in “Carlito’s Way” (1993), “Crimson Tide” (1995), “G.I. Jane” (1997) and many others quickly followed. He achieved stardom in middle age playing the warrior Aragorn in Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. His first Oscar bid as Best Actor came shortly thereafter for David Cronenberg‘s thriller “Eastern Promises” (2007), followed by nominations for “Captain Fantastic” (2016) and the Best Picture-winning “Green Book” (2018).

Will Smith’s life has not been the same since the infamous slap heard around the world. The actor had what was supposed to be the greatest moment in his career turn into a controversy that has not gotten off his back since then. The King Richard star slapped Chris Rock on the Oscars stage in 2022 and went on to win Best Actor on the same night.
Smith’s slap was preceded by Rock making a joke about the former’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia. As a funny retaliation of sorts for going after a comedian, stand-up comic Andrew Schulz put out a brutal roast, making so many jokes about Smith and Pinkett Smith that the actor would have wished he moved on from Chris Rock’s ‘GI Jane’ joke.

Jason Beghe has tried his hands at actions and comedies, science fiction and mysteries, and many more genres, but his true brilliance lies in working for the crime genre. Demi Moore is regarded as a pioneer for equal pay for the actresses in the industry. She became the first woman to be paid the highest salary for her role in Striptease, but this came with a huge con. After completing her unconventional role the actress was condemned and shamed for her choice.
Moore mentioned in several interviews that she dealt with a great deal of hate after that movie. Though she became the first actress to break through the invisible pay gap, her efforts were in vain. The media and people at that time felt betrayed and were harsh on the actress for her supposed indecent role.

“On paper, this could have been a disaster,” Demi Moore said in a recent interview with The Independent. She was speaking, of course, of her highly acclaimed performance in Coralie Fargeat‘s recently released body horror satire “The Substance.” The film, which won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes and the People’s Choice Midnight Madness award at TIFF, follows Moore’s character, a popular aerobics show host named Elisabeth Sparkle, as she starts using a black market drug to make herself appear younger. Brilliantly skewering the beauty industrial complex, the film and Moore’s performance have been widely lauded, garnering her serious Oscar buzz. For Moore, though, the real success of taking part in a project like this was finding comfort in her own skin, a result she says comes from the bond formed between her and the actress playing her younger self, Margaret Qualley.

Demi Moore is getting her due thanks to Metrograph.
The “Substance” actress and Hollywood icon is being honored by Metrograph with a five-film series of Moore’s most beloved features, as curated by the theater. Titled “We Want Moore,” the mini festival begins September 13.
“The rapturous reception of Demi Moore’s performance in Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ at this year’s Cannes Film Festival seems to have reminded many people that the New Mexico-born actress is a bona fide movie star — not just in terms of box office receipts and magazine cover shoots, but in her seemingly effortless ability to command the screen every time she walks into frame,” the Metrograph press statement reads. “In ‘We Want Moore,’ we’ve brought together some other timely reminders.”
Selected films screening in 35mm include Moore’s iconic turns in “Ghost,” “Indecent Proposal,” and “Striptease,” which Moore recently told Variety was one of her most under-appreciated performances.

“I’m warning you: She loves to dominate a teddy bear,” Demi Moore says as her teacup Chihuahua, Pilaf, toddles into the room. Moore, perched on a kitchen stool in her Los Angeles home, watches her dog with a sly smile. “You’re going to see some humping.”
Pilaf has had a busy year — she was featured in Vogue, and seen in the front rows of Paris Fashion Week — so bringing her to the Cannes Film Festival in May was a risk: Would the pint-size bundle of cuteness upstage her owner at the premiere of her blood-drenched horror film “The Substance”? Perhaps Moore knew the role was more beastly than her little pet could ever be.

1997’s G.I. Jane will forever be tied to one of the most infamous moments in Academy Awards history, when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock for taking a dig at Jada Pinkett Smith’s tight cut, using the Demi Moore movie part of the punchline. But it’s important to remember just what impact that movie had upon release. Outside of Sigourney Weaver, it was practically unheard of for a mainstream actress – especially one considered one of the most beautiful in Hollywood – to take the risk to shave her head for a role. But Moore saw the chance to play this character and ran with it with a tenacity that for too long has been overlooked.

I had done ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ and there was a lot of conversation around this scene in a bikini, and it was all very heightened, a lot of talk about how I looked,” Moore told Interview magazine while in discussion with Michelle Yeoh. “And then I found that there didn’t seem to be a place for me. I didn’t feel like I didn’t belong. It’s more like I felt that feeling of, I’m not 20, I’m not 30, but I wasn’t yet what they perceived as a mother.”
“The Substance” star added that she even questioned her place in Hollywood,...

Ethan Hawke reveals what Denzel Washington said to him the night Hawke lost his ‘Training Day’ Oscar
The year was 2002 and Ethan Hawke was up for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his work in “Training Day.” When Marcia Gay Harden read Jim Broadbent’s name, winning for “Iris,” Hawke’s co-star Denzel Washington whispered something in his ear.
It wasn’t “boom!” As Hawke revealed in a recent interview, Washington – who had already won an Oscar for “Glory” and would win a second that very night – said, “It’s better that you didn’t win. Losing was better.”
Hawke, who would go on to get three more Oscar nominations for acting (“Boyhood”) as well as screenwriting, expanded what Washington meant. “You don’t want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award’s status,” he said. “That’s the way he thinks. That’s what I’m talking about playing with Babe Ruth. The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple.

Ridley Scott‘s wildly ambitious “Napoleon” might be the director’s last word on its subject, but it’s not the first time he tackled both the glory and the absurdity of the Napoleonic era. One could say that “Napoleon” has been 46 years in the making, since Scott first began thinking about and researching the French emperor during the making of his debut feature, “The Duellists,” in 1977. That film tells the story of two officers (Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel) in Napoleon’s army who engage in an obsessive ritual of duels that goes on for so long that they ultimately forget what even started the grievance; in its setting, visual style, and themes, it’s an exceptionally well-realized template for most of the Ridley Scott epics that would follow — and he shot this historical extravaganza on a budget of around $800,000.

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” had its world premiere in Paris on Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean French film critics are pleased with the epic. After being confronted with the words of Napoleon biographer Patrice Gueniffey, who slammed the film as “very anti-French and very pro-British,” director Ridley Scott told the BBC, “The French don’t even like themselves.”
“The audience that I showed it to in Paris, they loved it,” he added.
Scott, who has never been afraid to speak his mind, also told the network that he’s unbothered by claims that his movie is not historically accurate. “You really want me to answer that?… it will have a bleep in it,” he said of the film that stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and Vanessa Kirby as Napoleon’s wife Josephine.
“Were you there? Oh you weren’t there. Then how do you know?” Scott added.

Imagine, if you will, a movie about a costumed hero flying through the air, shooting laser beams out of their eyes. Now imagine that movie had a title card that read, "Directed by Ridley Scott." I'm sorry. It's probably too early in the morning for such flights of fancy. If you did allow yourself a moment to actually consider what that might look like, though, you aren't alone. Some lonely studio exec is sitting on their piles of money, dreaming of a beautiful sunset shining off spandex, shedding a tear over what could have been.
All that is to say that Ridley Scott, the man who brought us films like "Black Hawk Down," "The Martian," "Blade Runner," "Gladiator," "Alien," Kingdom of Heaven," "Thelma & Louise," and "G.I. Jane" has been offered superhero movies in the past, and he's turned them down, according to a recent interview with Deadline. Scott was speaking about his latest offering,...

Will Smith has responded to wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s statements about their turbulent relationship in her forthcoming Oct. 17 memoir, “Worthy.”
In an email to the New York Times, Smith expressed that Pinkett Smith’s revelations about their marriage in her memoir “woke him up.” He realized “she had lived a life more on the edge” and that “she is more resilient, clever and compassionate” than he’d understood.
“When you’ve been with someone for more than half your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in,” Smith wrote. “And you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”
Pinkett Smith is currently out on a “Worthy” press tour, on which she’s already revealed key details of her memoir. Previously, Pinkett Smith had dropped the bombshell to People magazine that she and her husband had been separated for six years before the infamous “Oscars slap” incident,...

In a new interview with People, former “Saturday Night Live” star Leslie Jones said her friend Chris Rock was “really affected” by the infamous Will Smith Oscars slap at the 2022 Academy Awards.
“That shit was humiliating. It really affected him,” Jones, whose new memoir is called “Leslie F*cking Jones,” told the legacy magazine. “People need to understand his daughters, his parents, saw that. He had to go to counseling with his daughters.”

“I think it’s important to share this, that this happens, that this happens to a healing person in recovery, who has been honest about how very sick she was/is and is working daily to find safety and home within her skin,” Tallulah candidly wrote, referencing her battle with body dysmorphia.
“It felt really important to show you this, that this happens,” she continued. “I’m very thankful I’ve gotten to a place where I don’t become dismantled by strangers words (for the most part). I love you and I like you – myself, buuskis included!”
The screenshots shared appear to show direct messages she’s received from people responding cruelly to her photo posts.

Indeed, it wasn’t long into Kimmel’s monologue at the start of Sunday’s Academy Awards that the comedian made a joke about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during the 2022 broadcast.

Chris Rock waited until the final moments of his latest Netflix comedy special to address last year’s infamous Oscars slap when Will Smith walked up to the stage and hit the comic across the face after Rock told a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
“You all know what happened to me, getting smacked by ‘Suge’ Smith. Everybody knows, everybody f–king knows,” Rock said, derisively comparing Smith to Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight. “Yes, it happened, like a year ago – f–king I got smacked at the f–king Oscars by this motherf–ker. People are like, ‘Did it hurt?’ It still hurts. I got ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears.”
While presenting Best Documentary at the Oscars last year, Rock joked that Pinkett Smith, who attended the ceremony with her head shaved due to having alopecia, looked like she couldn’t wait for a sequel to “G.I. Jane,...

Jeff Titus, who has spent 21 years in prison for the murder of two deer hunters in 1990, is a free man thanks to evidence discovered by a true-crime series and podcast.
Titus, a 71-year old man, left Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, Michigan, in part due to Investigation Discovery’s Killer In Question and Susan Simpson’s podcast Undisclosed.
It marks the latest innocent man to be freed as a result of the boom in interest in true-crime projects.
Titus’ conviction was overturned by U.S. Federal District Court Judge Paul D. Borman after the Michigan Conviction Integrity Unit, the Michigan Department of Attorney General and Titus’ attorneys at the Michigan Innocence Clinic submitted a joint filing requesting that the conviction be set aside, based on multiple Brady violations uncovered.
The series is produced by Red Marble Media, filmed in conjunction with Simpson’s Undisclosed podcast. It was they that uncovered the violations.

Janet Yang, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, called her organization’s response to Will Smith’s physical assault on Chris Rock during last year’s Oscar telecast “inadequate.” She made the comment amid opening remarks during Monday’s annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton.
“I’m sure you all remember we experienced an unprecedented event at the Oscars,” Yang told the attendees. “What happened onstage was fully unacceptable and the response from our organization was inadequate.”
Furthermore, she continued, “We learned from this that the Academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions, and particularly in times of crisis you must act swiftly, compassionately and decisively for ourselves and for our industry. You should and can expect no less from us going forward.”

Come another Oscar season, and “G.I. Joe” is on everyone’s lips again.
Following Chris Rock’s quip at Jada Pinkett Smith’s “G.I. Jane” likeness (and Will Smith subsequently slapping him onstage at the Oscars), actual “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” star Channing Tatum reveals that even he did not want to partake in its sequel, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”
During a Vanity Fair lie detector test video, Tatum talked about his time on the two films, starting with the 2009 “The Rise of Cobra.”
“The first [sequel] I passed on seven times, but they had an option on me, and I had to do the movie,” Tatum said. “So the second one, I obviously just didn’t want to do that one either.”
Tatum noted that he asked to be killed off within the first 10 minutes of the 2013 sequel, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” Dwayne Johnson instead led the follow-up film as Roadblock.
