It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Arrow Video is excited to announce the July slate of titles on their subscription-based Arrow Video Channel, including acclaimed undead comedy Zombie for Sale and Gamera: The Complete Collection, all twelve films starring mankind’s greatest defender: a fire-breathing mutant turtle.
An infectiously funny slice of modern Korean cinema where Train to Busan, The Quiet Family and Warm Bodies collide to create Zombie for Sale, a memorable rom-zom-com from debut director Lee Min-jae. For the first time ever, fans can trace the decades-long evolution of Gamera, from the “friend of all children” in his more light-hearted earlier films, to the Guardian of the Universe in the groundbreaking 1990s reboot series, often hailed as three of the best kaiju films ever made.

Hong Kong-born action director Ringo Lam, who directed the influential crime film “City on Fire,” has died.
Hong Kong media outlets reported the director, who was born Lin Lingdong, was found unresponsive in bed on Saturday by his wife. He was 63.
The 1986 “City on Fire” is considered a landmark film about Hong Kong triads, and won best director at the Hong Kong Film Awards. It was a major influence on Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs.” Lam followed that film up with “Prison on Fire” and “School on Fire.”
“Tarantino has never tried to hide his love for ’70s cinema, and this is part of what makes his take on ‘City on Fire’ so interesting,” wrote IndieWire in an explanation of Tarantino’s influences.
With several “Reservoir Dogs” shots recalling “City on Fire,” such as the image of four men in black suits and a man shooting a cop with with two guns,...

Hong Kong filmmaker Ringo Lam has been an active fixture among action movie fans since his debut in 1983, working with the likes of Chow Yun-Fat, Jackie Chan, and Jean-Claude Van Damme on movies in both Cantonese and English. With films such as Maximum Risk and Twin Dragons under his belt, many were interested to learn that he was in the midst of working on a new feature, marking Lan’s first foray back into feature-length filmmaking since the release of In Hell and Looking for Mister Perfect in 2003. Titled Wild City, Lam’s newest film is once again in Cantonese, as he takes on both directing and screenwriting duties, working with a cast that includes Louis Koo, Shawn Yue, and Jack Kao. Variety describes the film as follows.
The big-budget action movie is a Cantonese-noir, with bystanders caught up in a maelstrom of gangsters, greed and betrayal.

One of the most important parts of any action movie made before the new millennium is the so-called “boss fight.” For the uninitiated, a boss fight is the ultimate showdown between good and evil. After all the henchmen and various other obstacles-with-limbs have been cleared away, it’s time to get it on with the Big Bad.
Ever since Bruce Lee fought Han and his iron claw in that hall of mirrors at the end of Enter The Dragon, the merit of any martial arts film has largely been judged by its main adversary. And Jean-Claude Van Damme’s filmography is no different.
Running the gamut from muscle-bound pulverisers with nothing between the ears to corrupt businessmen with a penchant for picking the absolute worst Belgium to mess with, Van Damme has spin kicked just about every type of bad guy imaginable.

Universal Soldier began in 1992 before suffering from some tawdry sequels. Then John Hyams revived the franchise in spectacular fashion...
The Universal Soldier films are a strange case of life imitating art. Much like how series protagonist Luc Deveraux is killed in action then resurrected into something post-human, Universal was a pretty standard 90s action film which crashed and burned when it came to sequels, but became something unique and beautiful when it was reanimated for the straight to DVD market.
It’s a hushed secret among genre fans, but Universal Solder 3 and 4 (or possibly 5 and 6, it’s complicated) are some of the most remarkable action sci-fi films of the 21st century so far. Yes, really. I actually watched the series backwards when I first saw them, after being blown away by Universal Solder Day Of Reckoning and deciding to work my way back, and Roland Emmerich’s perfectly acceptable 1992 blockbuster...

Despite his villain character of 'Jean Vilain' meeting his demise in "The Expendables 2," action star Jean-Claude Van Damme says he'd be open to an idea floated around - that he'll return as the character's twin brother.
Van Damme famously played twins in both the action classic "Double Impact" and the less well-regarded "Maximum Risk". Fan site Expendables Premiere has discussed the idea ever since the end of the last sequel, but now Van Damme has responded:
"I had a great time shooting The Expendables 2 with Mr Stallone and other big action stars. Mr. Stallone is an inventive man. He may even create a stronger character than Claude Vilain, the twin brother of Jean Vilain.
Some fans ask me if the next Vilain - if there is a next - is going to be a good guy or a bad guy. I would leave it to Mr Stallone to decide,...

Jean Claude Van Damme is widely known for his brilliant kicking ability and martial arts background. As a young kid, Van Damme would train in the martial arts Shotokan karate and Kickboxing, during this time he also studied Ballet, which would be used more for his flexibility and strength in his legs.
He has a great kickboxing record on 19 fight, 18 wins, one loss, which he won at a later date in the rematch. But when it comes to his movies, he has a great influence within Asian Cinema, using many directors and choreographers in his movies. In his early movie career he starred in movies such as Bloodsport and Kickboxer, showing the arts of Ninjutsu and Muay Thai. With Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol coming out with minimal buzz and a 49 year-old Tom Cruise, it got me wondering about the modern action flick. During the 80’s we had a huge surge of action films with such actors like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwartzenegger, and Sylvester Stallone just to name a few. As time progressed, studios lined up the next generation of men to fill the positions of the now aging stars. However, when the Vin Diesels, the Jason Stathams, and the Rock debuted their films, there wasn’t nearly as much interest today in action films as in the past. Today they don’t even have A-list status. As a result, studios have forced the old-gen actors to continue churning out less and less plausible action films in their 60s. So while it may seem like all we’re missing is the right star,...

While Jean-Claude Van Damme now prefers to make narcissistic reality TV shows I had the chance to revisit one of his earlier works this week as Double Impact returns to DVD on 19th September. Made in 1991, Double Impact marked Van Damme’s first foray into the acting challenge of the dual role, here playing twin brothers separated at birth and distinguished by slightly different hairstyles.
Van Damme plays Chad and Alex Wagner who are separated as infants when their parents are brutally murdered by members of a Hong Kong criminal cartel. 25 years later, Chad has moved to California via Paris, by way of explanation for his unusual accent, to become a karate teacher and Alex, who stayed in Hong Kong, has become involved in the criminal underworld. The pair are reunited in Hong Kong by the family bodyguard Frank (Geoffrey Lewis – Every Which Way But Loose) with a plan to...

It's "Guillermo Del Toro Presents..." time again. Collider have a trailer up for Julia's Eyes, directed by Guillem Morales and starring Belen Rueda. Del Toro is a producer on the film, as he was with The Orphanage and the upcoming Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. He certainly has an eye for a good horror film, ho ho.Rueda, who was also in The Orphanage for Juan Antonio Bayona, has a dual role here as both Julia and her twin sister Sara, whose death Julia is investigating. Just like Van Damme in Maximum Risk. Or maybe not. Sara was blind and Julia is suffering from the same degenerative eye disease, making her suspicions that Sara's death was not a suicide, but caused by something haunting her in the dark, somewhat alarming. The trailer gives a lot away (it's more of a showreel than a normal promo-clip: the "in post-production" at...

I loved Jean-Claude Van Damme but not enough to watch all the straight to video movies he made. Maybe if Replicant and The Order had been full of crazy sh*t I would have been enticed to watch more. But First Look Pictures sent me a special edition of In Hell a while ago, and it sat on my stack long enough that it ended up getting watched.
On DVD: In Hell
There isn't a whole lot of crazy sh*t but Ringo (Maximum Risk) Lam does what he can with limited funds and locations. Most of the cool stuff happens in the one street-set chase scene, but they do a few shocking things in the prison.
