The State of the Race
It has already been said plenty of times, even since Cannes, but this is a really weird year for Best Picture. Academy rules have changed to make it so there will be 10 nominees no matter what, but there are only five to seven films that feel like shoo-ins for an Oscar nomination in the category.
With all the uncertainty around what films will make it in, there’s room for one or two newcomers to claim a spot. With critics having seen the last crop of major live-action awards contenders,...

John Magaro is the glue that holds September 5 together. He stars as ABC Sports producer Geoffrey Mason, who was covering the 1972 Munich Olympics when Black September terrorists took Israeli athletes hostage in the Olympic compound. Magaro must convey the enormous pressure and responsibility placed on Mason as he is suddenly thrust into the hot seat to produce live coverage. Director Tim Fehlbaum chose Magaro because, he says, “He’s one of the best there is.” Next, Magaro is set to appear with Michael Fassbender in the spy drama The Agency, followed by Maggie Gyllenhaal’s film The Bride.
Deadline: You weren’t even born then, but what did you already know about Munich ’72?
John Magaro: I knew about it. I don’t know why I knew about it. I mean, I’ve always been a lover of history. My mother’s Jewish. I was raised Jewish, so I think...

One of the best things about the late great songwriter Allee Willis is that anyone who considers themselves a fan of hers can still be hit by one of her accomplishments by surprise. Such is the crux of the new documentary released by Magnolia Pictures titled “The World According to Allee Willis.”
Though the quirky creative was hard to miss in a crowd, with her signature haircut and colorful outfits, Willis is somewhat of a hidden figure among the world of music and film, colloquially referred to as the white woman who co-wrote Earth, Wind, and Fire’s eternal hit “September,” yet somehow worked on “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts too, also known as the theme song for “Friends.”
That said, Willis’s two Grammy Awards actually come from the original music she wrote for stage and screen. In the exclusive clip above from “The World According to Allee Willis,...

A24 has picked up U.S. distribution rights to Pillion, the debut feature of British director Harry Lighton (Wren Boys) from Poor Things producers Element Pictures starring Harry Melling (The Pale Blue Eye) and Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman, Succession).
Described as a “funny, filthy romance,” Pillion sees Skarsgård play Ray, an ” impossibly handsome leader of a bike gang” who takes on Colin (Melling), a weedy wallflower, to be his new submissive. Ray uproots Colin from his dreary suburban life and introduces him to a community of kinky, queer bikers. But as Colin dives deeper into Ray’s world, he begins to question whether the life of a 24/7 submissive is really for him.
Lighton, BAFTA-nominated for his 2017 short Wren Boys, directed Pillion from his own script which is loosely inspired by Adam Mars-Jones’ 2019 novel Box Hill. The film wrapped production this summer.

As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 88 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething, including 2021 champ Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”). The 2024 winner, Robert Downey, Jr., was 58 when he picked up his prize for “Oppenheimer.” He joined 16 previous winners who were in their 50s when they took home the trophy. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actor.)

The Zurich Film Festival kicks off its 20th edition Thursday with a lineup of new European discoveries, some of the most acclaimed films of the year, a new center and wide-ranging industry forum.
In addition to an impressive roster of international stars, including Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law, Richard Gere and Pamela Anderson, the event offers a deep dive into some of the most pressing issues facing the industry at its annual Zurich Summit Conference.
Opening the fest will be Justin Kurzel’s neo-Nazi thriller “The Order,” starring Law, who will receive the festival’s Golden Eye career achievement award.
Organizers this year have streamlined the festival, eliminating its German-language Focus Competition and trimming the lineup down to 107 films, 41 fewer than last year. Zurich now has just two main competitions, for feature films and documentaries, in addition to such sidebars as Gala Premieres, Signatures, Border Lines, Hashtag #BigCityLife, Sounds and Zff for Kids.

September was a banner month for General Hospital alum Nicholas Alexander Chavez. He debuted in two Ryan Murphy series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and Grotesquerie. He also made the rounds on the press circuit, answering questions about his future, his present, and, for our intents and purposes, his past.
That is the Question
Currently, Chavez is focused on his career post-gh. He’s getting good reviews for his performance on Netflix’s Monsters, which had a monster first week with 2.7 billion minutes watched. In fact, TV Line recently named him Performer of the Week for his role as Lyle Menendez. The kudos used words to describe his performance like “Impressive,” “star-making,” and “enviable mastery of his craft.”

On what was a raucous, joyous night inside the hall, the roll call at the 2024 Democratic National Convention set social media abuzz with the innovative use of a live DJ and music to introduce each state and territory.
During night two of the Chicago convention, DJ Cassidy took on the role of setting up each state and territory with short intro music, as each representative got a chance to talk up their home before declaring their delegates. The song choices ranged from expected (“Empire State of Mind” for New York, “I’m Shipping up to Boston” for Massachusetts), to some truly inspired choices (“Raise Up” by Petey Pablo for North Carolina and “The Way I Are” by Timbaland for Virginia).
Stealing the show, though, was Georgia, which flexed by having Lil Jon perform “Turn Down for What” live inside Chicago’s United Center. In his surprise performance, he rapped the...

The Democratic National Convention continued on Tuesday with another slate of speakers advocating for Vice President Kamala Harris. They weren’t all Democrats. The DNC’s second day also featured the delegation roll call, in which delegates representing American states and territories announced their selection for president. Paramount’s Republic Pictures has acquired global sales rights – apart from Germany, Switzerland and Austria – to Tim Fehlbaum’s “September 5,” which stars Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin and Leonie Benesch, who broke out last year with the Oscar nominated “The Teachers’ Lounge.”
The film, which has Sean Penn as one of its producers, will open Venice Film Festival’s Horizons Extra competition section on Aug. 29. Sarsgaard won best actor at Venice last year for “Memory.”
“September 5” is set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, and follows an American sports broadcasting team that quickly adapted from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage.
Through this lens, “September 5” provides a new perspective on the live broadcast seen globally by an estimated one billion people at the time. The film “unveils the decisive moment that forever changed media coverage and continues to impact live news today,” according to a statement.

Writer-director Pablo Berger’s Robot Dreams opens on a nighttime shot of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan skyline in the distance. The year is 1984, and the Twin Towers loom, figuratively and literally, as ghostly figures. Berger’s breathtaking adaptation of Sara Varon’s graphic novel of the same name isn’t about the towers in any specific fashion, but about a world in which change is the only constant, life of any kind is at the mercy of randomness, and joy and melancholy are in ongoing symbiosis. In other words, our world—albeit one populated here, not by humans, but by anthropomorphic, humanoid animals.
Our surrogate in this world is Dog. At home by himself on a summer night, he’s drawn to a television commercial’s beckoning text (“Are you alone?”) and orders the product advertised, initially unseen by the viewer. Robot is soon delivered (some assembly required), and...

Weird sisters have been spinning their witchy webs in stories dating back to Greek mythology, which included a macabre trio of sisters who passed a single eye between them. There is something of that sense of a closed circle of unknowable femininity between the two teenage girls in September Says, the first film to be directed by Greek Weird Wave actor Ariane Labed, based on the 2020 novel Sisters by Daisy Johnson and set between England and Ireland.
July (Mia Tharia) is timid, a new girl at the high school where her sister September (Pascale Kann) already is marked as unruly, aggressive and peculiar, inclined to bullying; she will appoint herself as her sister’s protector. July is relieved to hang back, even when there is a hint that her sister’s control-freakery might include commanding the weather. There is a whiff of the witch about her, too.

Directed by Pablo Berger, “Robot Dreams” is based on a graphic novel by Sara Varon and follows the unexpected friendship between a dog and a robot. Their friendship blossoms until they become inseparable — until Dog is forced to abandon Robot at the beach. And it’s all set to ’80s music.
The Oscar-nominated feature premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and later won the Special Jury Prize at the Animation Is Film Festival. “Robot Dreams” marks the “Blancanieves” filmmaker Berger’s animated feature debut.
“With ‘Robot Dreams’ I wanted to explore the infinite narrative possibilities of animation. A medium
where everything is possible and there are no formal limits,” Berger said in a press statement.

The biographical documentary is a genre that lends itself to a reliable storytelling formula. First, we look back on the origins of the subject; we are introduced to some of the key figures that helped them along the way; we are shown the beginning of their career all the way to the end, and are then left to contemplate their legacy.
Due to the predictability of this format, these documentaries can often come off as by-the-numbers, taking us on a telegraphed emotional journey intended as a crowdpleaser. But every once in a while, there’s a subject who is so unique that their story elevates the formula. Allee Willis is one such subject, with a life story that’s energetic, colorful and invigorating to witness. Director Alexis Manya Spraic crafts a documentary that strives to be just as fascinating as its subject.

‘Robot Dreams’ Review: Androids Dream of Disco Beats in Pablo Berger’s Sweetly Sorrowful Buddy Movie
Android or artificial intelligence isn’t the enemy in “Robot Dreams,” Pablo Berger’s gently whimsical fantasy of a loner finding manufactured friendship in a scuzzy vision of 1980s New York City. Indeed, one takeaway from this portrait of a shabby-happy Big Apple populated solely with anthropomorphic animals and surprisingly sensitive automatons is that the world might be a better place without humans in it. Like “Blancanieves,” his silent, flamenco-styled spin on Snow White, Berger’s fourth feature dispenses with dialogue in favor of cheerfully expressive, faux-naive visual storytelling. In all other respects, however, “Robot Dreams” is a significant left turn for the Spanish writer-director, beginning with an entirely fresh medium for him: simple, sharp-lined 2D animation in the manner of a pastel-softened “BoJack Horseman.”
Both the film’s aesthetic and its wordless approach, however, are rooted in American author and illustrator Sara Varon’s 2007 graphic novel of the same name.

An idyllic setting, charming cast, and sweet love story are often the ingredients needed for a good comfort watch. The desire to escape everyday pressures since the pandemic has seen viewers like myself going back to old favorites such as Gilmore Girls or finding something newer like Virgin River, currently streaming its fifth season on Netflix.
With each season reaching Netflix’s top ten, Virgin River has capitalized on fan’s love of Robyn Carr’s 21-book-long series of the same name and our increasing impulse to find new shows that don’t require too much of our attention. Virgin River is precisely that as it lacks terror-inducing Jaws music and instead provides Hallmark-esque vibes with the added dash of danger from the illegal drug trade surrounding the town.
The series follows nurse practitioner Melinda “Mel” Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), who moves to the remote California town of Virgin River to...

Thursday night’s audience at Broadway’s Here Lies Love got a surprise bonus performance when DJ Fatboy Slim, who co-wrote the musical with David Byrne, took to the stage and spun a one-night-only set following the show.
Among those audience members: Byrne, who hugged and did a brief dance with Slim (aka Norman Cook) when the DJ jumped from his stage booth to the dance floor of the heavily renovated Broadway Theatre. The DJ’s 90-minute set was his first New York City show in more than 10 years.
During the set, Slim spun such records as Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and John Paul Young’s “Love Is in the Air,” not to mention Byrne’s own “Lazy” and his Talking Heads classic “Once in a Lifetime.”
