These days the horror genre is one of the only ways to get a thoughtful, original story made in Hollywood. But believe it or not, there were those who used to be ashamed to take part in the genre. Basket Case and Frankenhooker director Frank Henenlotter was never one of those people. He basked in it. And though it may not be his most famous film, the film we’re going to cover today might be his grossest, funnest, and most thought provoking of all them. Featuring heavy drug references, a phallic parasite, and a scene so twisted it made some of the crew walk off the set. This is what happened to Brain Damage.
Seasoned 80s horror fans and monster movie aficionados may look back at Basket Case as a decently known cult commodity. Not enough so at the time that its director, Frank Henenlotter was given a huge budget for his next production.

Paul Verhoeven's 1990 film "Total Recall" takes place in the distant future of 2084. Mars has not only been colonized, but it has also fallen under the rule of an evil governor named Vilos Cohaagen (Ronny Cox). The planet is rich with a rare, valuable ore called turbinium, but mining it has caused widespread pollution and radiation. Many of the Martian citizens have mutated as a result, their bodies sprouting extra body parts or sporting unusual growths. In many cases, mutants are also mildly psychic. To combat Cohaagen's corruption, a Mutant Resistance has formed, led by the mysterious and difficult-to-find Kuato (Marshall Bell).
The protagonist of "Total Recall" is Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former agent for Cohaagen who had his memory erased and his identity changed. It takes a long while for Quaid to understand what happened to him, but he eventually discovers that he has to combat Cohaagen and help the Mutant Resistance.

Director Frank Henenlotter is a cult horror legend. But after making the cult classics Basket Case, Brain Damage, Basket Case 2, Frankenhooker and finally, Basket Case 3, he disappeared. After 17 years in 2008, he returned and made another film, the black comedy (kinda) body horror Bad Biology. And now, almost another 17 years later again, Bad Biology is getting a 4K Uhd release from Severin Films.
Bad Biology, like the director’s previous work, is not a movie you’ll easily forget:
Driven by biological excess, a man and a woman search for sexual fulfilment, unaware of each other’s existence. Unfortunately, they eventually meet, and the bonding of these two very unusual human beings ends in a god awful love story.

As every new month brings an insane tidal wave of new additions to streaming libraries, it can be tough selecting the perfect watch. Even more so when it comes to Tubi, a streaming platform with a vast, overwhelming selection of titles that include everything from mainstream releases to obscure deep cuts once trapped on VHS.
Because the streaming service excels so well at this with a layout that isn’t always the easiest to navigate when hunting down rare titles or finding the best horror movies on Tubi, we’re here to help.
For February, we’re narrowing it down to twenty horror movies you should watch, from recent gems to required viewing from horror masters. More specifically, this list avoids too many of the obvious classics, like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (also streaming on Tubi), to instead offer a wider variety slightly off the beaten path.

Known to horror fans for playing Stephen ‘Flyboy’ Andrews in George A. Romero’s horror classic Dawn of the Dead, actor David Michael Emge has passed away at the age of 77. Emge passed on Saturday, January 20 at the West River Health Campus in Evansville, Indiana.
David Emge’s ‘Flyboy’ was one of the main characters in Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, the pilot for the Wgon-tv station who ends up trapped in a mall during the zombie apocalypse. ‘Flyboy’ eventually becomes a zombie himself later in the movie, and Emge’s performance ensured that ‘Flyboy Zombie’ has endured as one of the most iconic movie zombies of all time.
David Emge made a few more stops in the horror genre in the wake of 1978’s Dawn, also appearing in the horror movies Basket Case 2 (1990) and Hellmaster (1992).

One of the quintessential drive in kinda guys to me is Frank Henenlotter. Not only because of the anointing from the patron saint of Drive-ins himself, Joe Bob Briggs, but also just from a horror core memory. Long before I knew about the fabled 42nd Street in New York and all the magical movies that were shown there, I was introduced to Belial and his brother Duane on grainy VHS from Video Unlimited. That’s the magical part about being a horror fan. My brothers weren’t even particularly fond of the first movie, but knew it was an important piece of independent horror cinema. Shot for 35,000 and released in April of 1982, Basket Case is now enshrined in Moma,...

The Movie: "Basket Case"
Where You Can Stream It: The Criterion Channel, Tubi, Kanopy, Screambox, Arrow
The Pitch: Backed by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a group of scattered New York artists gathered in a room sometime in 1974 to talk. Their goal was to assemble a loosely organized art collective that would remain in artistic control of its own exhibitions and its own cable TV station. The resulting collective was called Collaborative Projects, or Colab for short. Colab proceeded to put on public variety performances with names like "Income and Wealth Show," "The Batman Show," and "Just Another A**hole Show." The Colab also sponsored a series of feature films that came to be known as the No Wave movement.

I’ll always primarily think of Greg Sestero as the young Andre Toulon from Full Moon‘s 1999 release Retro Puppet Master, but for many movie fans he is best known for playing the role of Mark in director Tommy Wiseau’s “disasterpiece” The Room. After the experience of working on The Room, Sestero wrote a book about the making of the film that was called The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made, which served as the basis for the movie The Disaster Artist. Now Sestero has made his feature directorial debut with the horror film Miracle Valley, and Deadline reports that the film is going to be released through the Tubi streaming service on September 16th. With that date just three days away, check out the trailer for Miracle Valley in the embed above to see whether or not this looks like something...

February’s home media releases are ending in a big way, with 20 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto various formats this week. Leading the pack this Tuesday are Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, which comes home on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD, as well as Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space, which will be available on both Blu and DVD. Scream Factory is showing Mary Lambert’s Pet Sematary Two some love this week with their Collector’s Edition release, and for those of you into wacky, obscure cult classics, you’ll definitely want to pick up Vinegar Syndrome’s Blu-ray for Spookies.
Arrow Video is keeping busy with their Special Edition releases of Deadly Manor and the One Missed Call trilogy, and Severin Films has given James Glickenhaus’ The Astrologer an HD overhaul this week, too.

For years now, I’ve been hosting horror movie marathons around Halloween. It’s my favourite time of year: an extended excuse to trawl through the trash bins of ‘80s and ‘90s horror in search of legit gems. To save you the pain of suffering through dumpster fires like Chopping Mall and House 4: The Repossession, I’ve summoned a list of ten sure-fire horror party bangers. These are films which nail the venerable Venn intersection of scares, humour and murderous efficiency.
So, without further ado, and in no particular order…
Sleepaway Camp, Aka Nightmare Vacation (1983)
It’s not exactly laugh-a-minute, and in terms of gore it’s fairly tame, even for the period. But this summer camp slasher has one great trump card: uniqueness. Apart from its genuinely great twist (which passes the test of being both completely unexpected and holding up to repeated viewings), director Robert Hiltzik drenches...

August 9th is an interesting day for horror home entertainment releases, as we have two titles I never could have imagined arriving on Blu-ray, and that’s always a great thing for fans.
Synapse Films has given both of Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case sequels an HD overhaul, and for those who may have missed the Turkish horror movie Baskin during its release earlier this year, Scream Factory and IFC Midnight have teamed up for the film’s Blu-ray / DVD combo pack, which arrives on Tuesday as well.
Other notable releases on August 9th include 11.22.63, Dark Waves, and Alone in the Ghost House.
Basket Case 2 (Synapse Films, Blu-ray)
Duane Bradley and his surgically-separated twin brother Belial return in this frightfully gory follow-up to Frank Henenlotter’s original monster movie classic, Basket Case. After surviving a fall from a hospital window, the two brothers become media targets.

Production on James Franco’s starry depiction of The Disaster Artist continues apace today, with the actor-director taking a break from filming to confirm that for the very first time, all three of the Franco brothers will star in the same feature film.
Based on the eponymous novel by Tom Bissell and Greg Sestero, James Franco’s latest directorial effort tells the story behind the creation of Tommy Wiseau’s The Room in 2003, widely regarded to be one of the most diabolical films ever committed to celluloid. Since then, Wiseau’s eccentric movie has become something of a cult classic, and the eldest Franco is clearly dreaming big ahead of The Disaster Artist.
Headlining the picture as Tommy Wiseau, James Franco will co-star alongside Dave Franco (21 Jump Street) and now Tom Franco (Basket Case 2, The Devil Wars a Toupee), who has been added to the ensemble in an undisclosed role.

Nestled next to Sheffield Hallam University, the Showroom Workstation cinema offers a haven for local film buffs, students and artists, and also sports one of the most impressively relaxed café bars of any film screening establishment we've been to thus far. Real ale on tap – kudos! Upon walking through the doors and approaching the box office, your attention was immediately drawn to the selection of severed body parts and cobwebs hanging at head height. This also extended to the bar and concessions stand, lending a nice kooky, spooky feeling to the weekend's events.

It may be Monday, but demons still want to party, and as producer Kevin Tenney told us this morning, they're preparing to do so in a splatter-filled sequel to the 2009 remake of his 1988 cult classic Night of the Demons. Read on for more!
"It’s been too long since something unspeakable has happened with a tube of lipstick," said Tenney (pictured), "and I think it’s time to change that with Night of the Demons: After-Party, which will be the funniest, bloodiest, nastiest Night of the Demons yet."
Joining producer Tenney for the sequel will be director Anthony Hickox (Waxwork, Hellraiser 3), who will direct from a script by Sean Tretta (Death of a Ghost Hunter, The Prometheus Project), and actress/horror veteran Tiffany Shepis, who will star. Gabe Bartalos (Leprechaun, Basket Case 2 & 3) will handle make-up and special effects, and Harry Manfredini (Friday the 13th, House), will score the film.

One of the reasons why we love horror films is the dangerous sex appeal – especially in slasher films from the 80s. Although most teenagers in these slasher films suffer brutal deaths after they engage in such sexy behaviors, there is something still strangely and erotically appealing about sex in these horror films. But what about the monster sex scenes? Do they have the same effect on spectators? Are monster scenes sexy? Maybe we’re getting too far ahead of ourselves - what qualifies as a monster sex scene? For the purposes of this list, I am only examining non-human sex – although one human might be involved in the act, at least one monster must be present: whether it be a re-animated head without a body, a creature with several legs, an alien, a ghoulie; basically anything that isn’t human and has undergone some process of “evil-i-zation” qualifies as a...

My love of Basket Case didn’t officially occur until its sequel – when the deformed brother of Duane Bradley (Kevin VanHentenryck), Belial, finally met the “girl” of his dreams. However, the original Basket Case has a lot to offer, and I’ve chosen it for the second installment of Terror Tapes because for many of us, Basket Case (directed by Frank Henelotter) was the reason we fell in love with horror in the first place. You probably have memories of walking into the video store, stepping into the horror section and falling in love with the font on the video cover, dripping with blood, and a horrendous face peeking out from inside a basket. That was the Media Home VHS box. Or perhaps your video store carried the Palace Version VHS with Duane on the cover, carrying the basket, with some of the sleaziest signs from New York’s 42nd Street in the background.

Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case from 1982 was a seedy little fever dream of a film with operatic violence and a pitch black sense of humor. It told the twisted grindhouse tale of the Bradley brothers, Siamese twins crudely separated against their will by a team of doctors (and one veterinarian). Duane (Kevin Van Hentenryck), the more physically "normal" of the two, was saved while his deformed other half, Belial, was put in a trash bag and left for dead on the street. Duane, who shared a telepathic link with his lumpy twin, saved the still-breathing Belial. A few years later the two began to hunt down (and savagely mutilate) the surgical team responsible for their separation. The appropriately downbeat ending gave it a fable-like resonance and...

Basket Case Trilogy
Stars: Kevin VanHentenryck, Terri Susan Smith, Beverly Bonner, Annie Ross, Judy Grafe, Gil Roper | Written and Directed by Frank Henenlotter
Still somewhat of an underground series in mainstream movie-going consciousness (despite what seems like a huge horror-loving fanbase), the Basket Case trilogy finally makes its way to Blu-ray after a shoddy treatment on DVD where here in the UK they have often been resigned to the bargain bins. Thankfully Second Sight have decided to give the franchise its proper due with a trilogy release that will definitely please fans of the films and will hopefully also make a lot of new ones…
Released on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray steelbook (a must-buy for me), the Basket Case Trilogy features the adventures of two brothers, Duane and Belial, well I say brothers but they were originally conjoined twins, separated against their will; with Duane seemingly “normal” and Belial resigned to a life of deformity,...

Some people just have a knack for certain things. Michael Jordan could play basketball like there was no tomorrow, Sam Kinison was a master of comedy, Bobby Fischer could hold his own in chess and Stu Ungar knew his way around a card table. In that vein Frank Henenlotter had his niche as well…making outrageously over-the-top and wildly entertaining films.
Anthology Film Archives is celebrating the career of Henenlotter on November 4-6 in New York City with a retrospective presentation of some of the writer/director’s most memorable works. The films to be screened are certainly standouts of ‘80s horror: Brain Damage, Frankenhooker, Basket Case and Basket Case 2. Quite the Murderers’ Row of celluloid!
And to add to the excitement of the three-day event, Frank Henenlotter himself will be in attendance for the screenings. You can get a chance to meet the man and ask him, “What...

On September 27, 2011, the cult film classic Basket Case (1982) (review here), about the weird relationship between two brothers, finally comes to Blu-ray. Lovingly restored and supervised by Director Frank Henenlotter himself, the new Blu-ray boasts the film’s best version since it was first filmed.
I recently had the chance to talk with Frank, who tried to avoid a film career and yet is one of the most popular independent grindhouse filmmakers since Herschell Gordon Lewis.
Colleen: How did you get your start making films?
Frank Henenlotter: I just made them. I took my father’s 8mm camera and I graduated to a 16mm camera. I just loved making movies. I never intended them to be commercial. In fact I never intended them to be seen, I just enjoyed making movies. I never intended to have a career out of it and I still don...

As much as I love Fangoria Magazine (I own every issue), I always felt that Gorezone smoked it! It was much edgier and wasn’t afraid to take chances. Fangoria was equal to Playboy, whereas Gorezone showed you more ala Penthouse. Today, Fangoria broke the news about its return in the “Bloody Best” form. I only wish Chas. Balun was still with us to celebrate the great news.
Curated by current Fangoria editor Chris Alexander, “The Bloody Best…” showcases classic articles on films like Michele Soavi’s The Church, Scott Spiegel’s Intruder, Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case 2, Amando DeOssorio’s Blind Dead movies, as well as vintage flashbacks of Tim Lucas’s groundbreaking Video Watchdog column and the late Chas. Balun’s gonzo Piece o’ Mind essays.

Known for his exceptional make-up effects work in the Frank Henenlotter films Brain Damage and Basket Case 2, Gabe Bartalos has gone on to have one of the most distinguished careers in the pantheon of latex slingers. He has branched out to the role of director [Skinned Deep], producer [The Mercy Man], and he is the head honcho of his own effects house [Atlantic West Effects].
Being the reflective kind of guy I am, I wanted to chat it up with Gabe about a motion picture that is collecting dust in some studio vault just waiting to be rediscovered. Like a genie in a bottle, it lays idle waiting for someone to rub it the right way and let it loose so everyone can see the best genre picture involving a djinn [sorry, Wishmaster] ever made.

Matt Mitler began his indie horror career with the cult favorite The Mutilator in the early 80's. He followed that with a handful of other horror films most notably Frank Henlotter's Basket Case 2. For more info. on what Matt is up to today visit http://www.dziecitheatre.org/ or to find out more about his debut film as director, Cracking Up, Click Here.
For those unfamiliar with Matt Miter, who are you and what are you all about?
I will expedite matters by referring to an abbreviated bio: Matt Mitler has been hospitalized in seven different countries and has a criminal record in the state of New York. He starred in over a dozen grade Z motion pictures in the 80's, before making his own film, "Cracking Up", which won a number of international awards but still isn’t available on DVD. Matt has also been a comic, a mime,...

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.
I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.
The terror continued with a spoof of Paranormal Activity...

Cult horror movie directing legend Frank Henenlotter will make a special live appearance at this screening of his latest freak show, Bad Biology. This is Henenlotter’s first feature since 1992’s Basket Case 3: The Progeny.
Fans of Henenlotter’s unique brand of grotesque physical horror won’t be disappointed by this dual tale of a woman (Charlee Danielson) cursed with killing her paramours during lovemaking and giving birth to hideous deformed monstrosities after every coupling and a man (Anthony Sneed) with a killer sex organ that has a mind of its own.
Henenlotter’s first feature film, 1982’s Basket Case, is a beloved cult classic that features outrageous gore and one of horror’s most unique serial killers: A blob-like conjoined twin rudely separated from his “normal” brother’s side. The...

New York horror filmmaker Frank Henenlotter has managed to remain in relative obscurity thus far in his career, despite the notoriety his films have achieved. But for those who know his work, it feels as if his filmography is far more massive than just six films. His films are definitively schlock horror, dealing humorously with themes of sex, drugs, and surreal body-bending mutation, all taking place in a darkly weird perspective of New York City. The marriage between horror and sex has been a long one, but I'm going to go out on a limb and declare Henenlotter one of the masters. At least for anyone who is into goofy special effects. As his influence, Henenlotter cites the exploitation films of the 60s and 70s he watched as a young teen on 42nd street. He is also notable for his massive collection of old film prints of exploitation films, and...
