“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” drops finally on Disney+ as the latest live-action entry in the franchise.

The series boasts Jude Law as a mysterious Force user who’s discovered by a group of kids who themselves are lost in space and trying to get home. Law agrees to help them and if they happen to stumble across some treasure on the trip home then all the better. For those who wanted to know what “Star Wars” would have felt like directed by Steven Spielberg, then “Skeleton Crew” is the show for you.

At times, the latest Disney+ streaming series money grab, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, feels like a grand family adventure. The story is fun, the special effects are spectacular, and the series doesn’t take itself too seriously. Of course, it helps that Jude Law revels in the lead role and proves he can be both a protagonist and an antagonist, Aka the “anti-hero.”

On the other hand, the series is so invested in marketing toward children that it almost doesn’t seem like it belongs in the world of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, or Ahsoka. This removes the stakes because we know Disney won’t kill off any child in the main cast.

However, what Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has that others don’t is a considerable amount of heart.

Scott Hicks' 2001 supernatural drama "Hearts in Atlantis" should have been a big hit. Based on a novel by Stephen King, the movie blended the author's bent for 1950s and 1960s nostalgia with his knack for mysterious fantasy. Sterlin Harjo’s FX pilot “The Sensitive Kind” has added five new cast members.

Killer Mike, Kaniehtiio Horne, Cody Lightning, Michael Hitchcock, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong have all been cast.

They join previously announced series lead Ethan Hawke as well as cast members Keith David, Siena East, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson, Scott Shepherd, Tracy Letts, Kyle Maclachlan, and Macon Blair. Both Hake and Horne previously appeared in Harjo’s critically-acclaimed FX series “Reservation Dogs.” Hawke appeared in one episode of the final season, while Horne appeared in multiple episodes as the mystical Deer Lady.

FX’s pilot The Sensitive Kind from creator Sterlin Harjo (Reservation Dogs) has added five to its cast: Killer Mike (Ozark), Kaniehtiio Horn (Reservation Dogs), Cody Lightning (Echo), Michael Hitchcock (Grand Death Lotto) and Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew).

The period horror film directed by Martin Bonnici is currently in production in Malta, with a cast of Maltese newcomers alongside actors including Brit Bobby Schofield (The Covenant) and Irish actor Moe Dunford (Vikings).

The WWII-set movie charts the legend of the Babaw, a supernatural creature known for stalking and killing children. The film, inspired by true historical events, sees citizens of Malta take shelter from Nazi bombardment in the ancient catacombs underneath the cities, where they suffered deadly peril from collapsing tunnels and entrapment. That experience scarred a generation, and led to stories about creatures that stole children who strayed too far away from their parents.

Screenplay was written by Scottish screenwriter and comics writer Emma Beeby, based on a story Beeby wrote with Gordon Rennie.

Zac Efron was a new face in one of Seth Rogen’s raunchy comedies Neighbors. But a fight scene in the film ended up getting out of hand, resulting in Efron slightly injuring himself.

John Carpenter has shared the news on Twitter that he's set to appear as a guest on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" tonight, marking his first return to the late show circuit in decades. The filmmaker has popped up on late shows before, discussing "Halloween" on David Letterman's show in 1982 and returning to talk to Letterman (by then in Colbert's current "Late Show" post) in 1999. But the horror master isn't a big late show guy, and the pre-21st century Letterman appearance seems to have been the last time anyone saw him give a traditional late show interview aside from an appearance on "The Daily Show" in 2001. Thus, his spot on "The Late Show" tonight is certain to be a rare treat for horror fans eager to hear from the brilliant writer, director, producer, and composer behind films like "The Thing" and "Escape From New York."

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a movie so cold and miserable you feel it in your bones as you watch it. 

Pitting a group of U.S. civilians at an Arctic research station against a shape-shifting alien that can convincingly imitate other living organisms, Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi/horror flick notoriously bombed upon its initial release in theaters. Over 40 years later, though, it's now justly regarded as a masterclass in genre filmmaking. Not all sports stories have a happy ending. On Oct. 11, A24 released the trailer for its upcoming wrestling drama "The Iron Claw," inspired by the real-life wrestling siblings the Von Erichs. In the film, Jeremy Allen White plays Kerry Von Erich, the most famous member of the family; Zac Efron stars as Kevin, and Harris Dickinson plays their brother David. The tense trailer for the '80s-set drama previews some of the unbelievable heartache and loss the family went through - leading to a legend that they were "cursed."

In real life, the family's patriarch, Jack Adkisson (played by Holt McCallany), used the name Fritz Von Erich as his wrestling gimmick when he first broke into the sport in the 1950s. Five of his six children would go on to become professional wrestlers as well. When Fritz died in 1997, five of his six sons had died before him; only Kevin was still alive.

It’s been great having a spree of new John Carpenter albums over the last decade; we might also acknowledge that roughly half of them were tied to projects few wanted, appreciable garnishes on undercooked (or outright-frozen) meals. Australia has five nominees across four categories for this year’s Rose d’Or Awards, which will be presented in a virtual ceremony at the end of this month.

Blumhouse announced today via social media that the company’s film Firestarter, from Universal Pictures, Blumhouse and Weed Road Productions will begin production today in Canada.

Zac Efron and Michael Greyeyes have been announced as being cast in the film.

Firestarter is being directed by Keith Tomas (The Vigil) and the script was adapted by Scott Teems.

Exclusive: Director Peter Farrelly finally is ready to follow his Best Picture Oscar winner Green Book. Apple Studios is in talks to finance The Greatest Beer Run Ever, with Zac Efron and Russell Crowe in talks to star and Bill Murray is being courted for a supporting role.

Since that victorious Oscar Night, Farrelly has had his sights set on this film, which he developed with Skydance. He co-wrote the script with Brian Currie and Pete Jones, based on the bestselling book The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty and War by Chick Donahue and J.T. Molloy. The film will produced by Andrew Muscato and Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger. I’m hearing that they are tying down the details but that the film will be made as an Apple Original Films title.

The Documentary Australia Foundation (Daf) is urging the Federal Government to treat documentary distinctly from drama as it proceeds with reform to the Producer Offset.

Specifically, Daf is calling for the ‘status quo’ to be maintained on a number of measures for feature documentary, that is: for the qualifying Australian production expenditure (Qape) threshold to stay at $500,000, and for the Gallipoli clause to remain in place.

In an open letter drafted to Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher that has already attracted around 170 signatories, Daf argues that it is “deeply concerned that a number of the proposed changes [to the Producer Offset] will have unintended consequences likely to devastate documentary feature films”.

Lester will forever be tied to a handful of quintessential ’80s hits and cult films, among which a place of honor goes to the Joel Silver-produced, over-the-top Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle Commando (1985). A film which irrupts in cinema theatres after another two of the director’s most well-known efforts: Class of 1984 (1982) and the Stephen King adaption Firestarter (1984). Michael Greyeyes pushed his body to the breaking point in order to play Makwa, the haunted man at the center of “Wild Indian.”

The veteran actor shed 35 pounds from his already slender frame, losing the weight largely by fasting. It was hard, Greyeyes admits, but also necessary to portray someone who has a toxic secret that threatens to destroy his carefully manicured existence as a successful executive and family man.

“There were months where basically I was hungry all the time,” Greyeyes told Variety. “That allowed me to have a lived experience. I would walk by coffee shops or bakeries and see all these delicious looking things I couldn’t have. It created a sense of frustration and keen hunger. I felt like a wolf at times when I was playing this role — I was something lurking at the edges of polite society trying to find his prey.”

Wayne Blair and Nel Minchin’s Firestarter – The Story of Bangarra has followed up Monday’s Aacta Award for Best Documentary with yet another win, claiming the inaugural Change Award at the Adelaide Film Festival.

Offering a $5000 cash prize, the category is designed to recognise a film that celebrates social and environmental impact, while expressing a desire to live in new ways.

Firestarter – The Story of Bangarra tells the origin story of the renowned Bangarra Dance Company through the eyes of its artistic director Stephen Page and other members.

The film, which was directed by Nel Minchin and Wayne Blair, and produced by Ivan Mahoney, has already been announced as the winner of festival’s $10,000 Documentary Award.

Mahoney said the latest accolade went to the heart of “how we can all work together to shape a brighter future”.

‘Babyteeth’ is the feature debut of established theatre and TV director Shannon Murphy.

Shannon Murphy’s drama Babyteeth has swept the board at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (Aacta) awards, winning nine prizes including best film and all four acting awards.

The Australian title – which premiered in Competition at the Venice Fil Festival in 2019 – was nominated for 13 awards, also taking home best direction for Murphy, best screenplay for Rita Kalnejais, best original score for Amanda Brown and best casting for Kirsty McGregor and Stevie Ray.

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (Aacta) crowned the winners from its 2020 awards ceremony today, with Babyteeh and Stateless dominating the film and TV categories respectively.

Shannon Murphy’s tragi-comedy Babyteeth was the big winner on the film side, scooping Best Film, Best Direction, Screenplay (Rita Kalnejais), Actor (Toby Wallace), Actress (Eliza Scanlen), Supporting Actor (Ben Mendelsohn) and Supporting Actress (Essie Davis).

On the TV side, Stateless, the series starring and created by Cate Blanchett, won Best Mini Series, Lead Actor (Fayssal Bazzi), Lead Actress (Yvonne Strahovski), Supporting Actor (Darren Gilshenan), Supporting Actress (Blanchett), Screenplay (Elise McCredie), and Direction (Emma Freeman).

Further winners included Rebel Wilson, who took Best Presenter for Lol: Last One Laughing Australia, and Tim Minchin, who won Comedy Performer for Upright.

Bittersweet comedy Babyteeth has swept this year’s Aacta Awards, picking up seven prizes at Monday’s ceremony including Best Film and Best Direction for debut filmmaker Shannon Murphy.

The film’s stars Eliza Scanlen and Toby Wallace took home the best lead actress and actor gongs, Essie Davis and Ben Mendelsohn were decorated in the supporting acting categories, and scribe Rita Kalnejais, who adapted her 2012 Belvoir Street play, also won the best screenplay award.

The ten Indigenous-led productions due to participate in Bunya Talent Lab LA will each receive development funding and participate in a companion writing program with Netflix.

Originally scheduled for May 2020 in LA, the five-day incubator program was delayed due to travel restrictions but will now take place virtually in early February 2021.

In order for the creatives to maintain momentum and utilise the extra time ahead of the event, Screen Australia’s Indigenous department and Netflix will give each team development funding to further develop their projects with Bunya producers.

As part of the hub, each project will also receive one-on-one international mentorship for their production from Australians in Film (AiF).

A final pitch session to Netflix commissioners in early 2021 will see one of the projects land a formal development deal with Netflix, with Bunya Productions engaged as producers.
