Throughout the early 2000s, the rock ‘n’ roll film festival “Don’t Knock the Rock” was one of the highlights of any L.A.-based cinephile’s year, an impeccably assembled program of movies, live performances, and panels celebrating the intersection between rock ‘n’ roll and cinema. Created by writer-director Allison Anders and music supervisor Tiffany Anders, “Don’t Knock the Rock” was beloved for its determination to showcase difficult-to-see music documentaries and for the breadth and depth of its programming.
The festival last graced L.A. screens in 2016, but now it’s returning to Hollywood via the American Cinematheque with a line-up that’s one of the best ever. From May 23-27, “Don’t Knock the Rock” will screen an eclectic mix of documentaries, music-themed narrative films, and essential retrospective programs at the Cinematheque’s Los Feliz venue, with an added virtual component that will stream from May 23-July 31. The opening credits of Jersey Shore featured taglines from each cast member that gave fans a glimpse of their personalities. Those taglines changed when Jersey Shore: Family Vacation came around, but the quotes still describe each roommate perfectly. With the return of Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola, we’re speculating what her updated tagline will become. Will she recycle “I’m the sweetest b**** you’ll ever meet?” or will she have an updated motto like the rest of her roomies?
Sammi ‘Sweetheart’ Giancola | MTV ‘Jersey Shore’ taglines from the original series
Lmfao’s song “Get Crazy” is the theme music for the original Jersey Shore. As the song plays, each roommate was shown with their tagline dubbed over the electronic dance hit. Jenni “JWoww” Farley’s slogan was: “After I have sex with a guy I will rip their heads off.” When she was part of Jersey Shore in seasons 1 and...

Herbert F. Solow, a longtime television executive who pitched the original “Star Trek” series to NBC while he was at Desilu Studios, along with “Mission Impossible” and “Mannix,” died on Thursday, his wife, Dr. Harrison Solow, confirmed. He was 89.
In later years, he and his wife wrote several books on the “Star Trek” series, including “Inside Star Trek: The Real Story” and “The Star Trek Sketchbook.”
Solow was brought in by Lucille Ball after her divorce from Desi Arnaz to help revive Desilu Studios, where he helped develop and sell “Star Trek” to NBC — after CBS originally turned it down because it already had “Lost in Space” — as well as “Mission: Impossible” and “Mannix” to CBS.
Solow helped guide “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry on their pitch to the network, and continued to champion the series until Ball herself got behind the effort.

Looking back at some of the strangest cameos in film and TV history, we were struck by how many of them were by musicians. It makes sense. After all, musicians are already out of place among actors on a TV or film set. What they bring to the table is different from what actors bring, in terms of star quality, charisma, self-expression and established personae. If you’re familiar with both the musician’s work and the characters in a movie or TV show (and the actors who play them...

Everyone needs an escape from time to time. A place apart from reality, where the strange whisper with the miraculous, and cheap trinkets are bartered with greasy denizens of the night. What better place to set a horror film than the carnival, where the potential for mystery awaits around every crimson tent and distorted mirror? If you’re so inclined, step right up and buy a ticket to The Funhouse (1981), the late Tobe Hooper’s wonderful tribute to the seedy shadowed world of carnies, caramel apples, and Universal monsters.
Released in March by Universal, The Funhouse underperformed at the box office, but critics (including Gene Siskel) admired it for focusing on suspense and thrills rather than gruesome mayhem. In a landscape littered with severed limbs and phallically inclined urban legends, Mr. Hooper used his genius to once again showcase the underbelly of the American psyche, this time with a major studio’s dollars.

Genes have been getting a bad rap lately on Dick Wolf shows.
On Law & Order: Svu Season 18 Episode 13, a rapist tried to use the "rape gene" defense while another worried about inheriting a predisposition to rape women.
And on Chicago Justice Season 1 Episode 7, a murderer tried using the same argument to claim she was not responsible for a brutal double homicide because she inherited irresistible urges to kill from her serial killer father.
I'm glad the defendant didn't get away with this ridiculous defense. I hope it's the last we hear of it for a long time.
Having David Zachariah's DNA turn up at a new crime scene could have gone in so many different directions instead of rehashing the bad genes defense to indefensible crimes.

Charles Manson. His name will live in infamy long after we're all dead and gone, and with good reason... the evil that this man is responsible for is as brutal as it is reprehensible. Apparently some of that negative energy is still lingering...
Seance goers early Saturday morning, August 9th - the 45th anniversary of the Sharon Tate murders - experienced a rather bizarre happening when just after midnight, as the seance was in full swing, a fire alarm went off for no apparent reason. There was no evidence of fire or smoke, although two candles on the table lit up the scene.
The seance was held 200 feet from 10050 Cielo Drive, the site where Manson Family members slaughtered five people, including Tate. (Two other victims, Leno and Rosemary Labianca, were killed the next night in a different location.) The Cielo Drive house is no longer there, and the address has been changed,...

You want to talk about a perfect match? Then dig on this... Rob Zombie is teaming with American Psycho writer Bret Easton Ellis to tell the story of one of the most infamous homicides the world has ever known.
According to Variety, Easton Ellis and director Zombie have teamed with Alcon Television to develop a project for Fox that will revisit the people and events connected to the Manson Family murder spree in August 1969.
The project is envisioned as a limited series, but it is in the very early stages of development with Fox. Ellis is set to write the script and some additional materials. Zombie is on board to direct.
Zombie has long had a fascination with the Manson Family slayings, which left seven people dead in the Los Angeles area. Among the victims were actress Sharon Tate, who was eight and a half months pregnant at the time...

Word of Lou Reed’s death spread across the Internet on Sunday. For me, it was Sunday afternoon, so I can’t make this allusion. Nor will I call it a perfect day.
That’s what Lou Reed was to me. From the time his first album came out, he provided not only a soundtrack for my life, but a running commentary. His New York-inflected nasal vocals seemed to perfectly capture my own yearning for something I couldn’t define, but wanted desperately.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, this made me unusual, especially in Ohio, where I lived. Lou had a hit in the mid-1970s, but there still weren’t a lot of people who would admit to liking him. I can only believe that people bought “Walk on the Wild Side” without acknowledging that they knew it was about drag queens.
He wrote about drag queens,...

When I first came to Los Angeles in my 20s I worked on the sets of a few movies as a unit publicist, among them director Allan Arkush's 1983 rock musical "Get Crazy," which starred Malcolm McDowell and Lou Reed. I was in awe of the taciturn legendary rocker, who turned up on the Wiltern Theatre set in beat-up jeans, boots and leather jacket, knew his lines and was a total pro. Arkush ("Heroes," "Crossing Jordan") sent me a remembrance of working with Reed after his death at age 71 on Sunday: I vividly remember this conversation with Lou Reed on the set of 'Get Crazy' in 1982. I asked Lou when it first struck him that he was indeed 'Lou Reed.' He told me that starting with "Transformer" in 1972, people came up to him on the street all the time and shared drug experiences or stories of being on the...

As you may have heard, singer/songwriter/occasional actor Lou Reed died last Sunday.
This didn’t come as much of a surprise. Several months ago, ComicMix’s own Martha Thomases had a swell birthday party at a wonderful-yet-foo-foo West Village Manhattan restaurant. As we left we walked through the massive line waiting to get in and I passed by a guy I thought I knew or recognized. Embarrassed, I waited until we were outside before I asked Martha if she knew who that was. She stopped, stared for a second, and said “Oh my god, that’s Lou Reed.”
Lou looked like shit – well-coiffed shit, but still… A week later we heard he was in for a liver transplant. Ultimately, it was that transplant that led to his death.

On this week's Voice Film Club podcast, our critics discuss the upcoming Dallas Buyers Club, the late Lou Reed, 1983's Get Crazy, 1979's The Visitor, and 2008's In Bruges. Matthew McConaughey extends his streak of taking on challenging roles in Dallas Buyers Club (out November 1), playing AIDS victim, entrepreneur, and ad-hoc activist Ron Woodruff. "I used to hate [McConaughey] with an unholy passion and partly because I hated the characters he played who were just so smarmy and so certain they were so good looking and so charming," says the Village Voice's Zacharek. "And on one hand, you don't want to hold that against an actor, but it's li...

Even though his impact in front of the camera was rarely felt, the music and mood of Lou Reed has had a staggering influence on film soundtracks through the years. So it’s with heavy hearts that we report the rock pioneer has died at the age of 71.Born in Brooklyn in 1942, he got into song writing early, kicking off his career after university working at novelty records label Pickwick. After befriending John Cale, he formed a band called the Primitives, which would mutate into the Warlocks and then the incredibly influential Velvet Underground, with whom he would have some of his earliest hits.Reed split from the band in 1970 and struck out on his own as a solo singer, producing such memorable albums as Transformer, Berlin and Metal Machine Music.Film-wise, he’s cropped up in movies such as 1980’s One Trick Pony (written by and starring) Paul Simon,...

Austin, Texas — Green Day isn't talking about the recent rocky past, but they're playing like the old days.
An upbeat Billie Joe Armstrong whipped the Grammy-winning punk trio through an ear-splitting two-hour show Friday night at the South by Southwest Music Festival, returning to the stage for only the second time since Armstrong emerged from a rehab stint that caused the band to postpone an arena tour.
The 41-year-old Armstrong made no mention of his problems with substance abuse while playfully bantering with a nearly sold-out crowd Moody Theater and ripping through a 25-song marathon. The energetic set mixed new rockers from the "Uno!" "Dos!" "Tre!" trilogy the band rolled out last winter and old favorites like "Longview" and "American Idiot."

Let’s be honest: Everyone you know is already going as Honey Boo Boo. They got the Honey Boo Boos covered. What they don’t know (and what you and I know) is that the true star of Reality TV 2012 isn’t that little Mountain Dew-swilling moppet, but her larger than life mother, “Mama” June Shannon.
Which of course is why you’re going to be dressed as Mama come next week (or probably this Saturday. This mid-day holiday is throwing everybody off.) To be honest, I hesitated to suggest a budget Mama costume, as I didn’t want it to be insulting towards a human I genuinely like and respect. I want to pay her homage, not make her feel bad. You know what I mean? Then I realized: how many of us will ever be Halloween costumes? I don’t mean characters we spawned or memes we created.

And at the end of the half hour, we see the pair getting it on to one of Nick’s carefully selected tracks… which Sam asks her to immediately turn off when they’re done.

My thanks to Martha Thomases for her column this week. In it she confessed to having a fondness for the 1980 Flash Gordon film that started the immortal Sam Jones and Max Van Sydow. It’s bad film and she knows it but she has legit reasons for her fondness of it. Martha, just so you know, the 2007 SyFy TV series is much worse, not even having space ships, for crying out loud! Flash Gordon without space ships?! Talk about not getting the concept!
I say thank you because I had no idea what I was going to do for my column this week and now I do. There are bad films and one CD that I know are horrible but I felt a compulsion to go out and buy a copy of them. This isn’t the same as the weird films of which I own a copy and that...

For no reasons that are indefensible intellectually, I went to see Rock of Ages the other day. I like Alec Baldwin, okay? It’s loud and it’s fun, and while hair metal was never my genre, I kind of like the power ballads that dominate the soundtrack.
The main plot is almost identical to Get Crazy, one of the greatest movies ever made. A sincere rock club on the Sunset Strip (in this case, The Bourbon Room), run by Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand, is in the rapacious site of greedy real estate developers. Our heroes must put on a show that will sell enough tickets to raise money and thwart the evil plans. Meanwhile, a sweet young girl (Julianne Hough) from the heartland comes to Los Angeles with dreams of rock stardom, and falls in love with a boy with similar dreams (Diego Benota).

DJ Pauly D isn't the only member of the "Jersey Shore" crew obsessed with beats. The vibe has clearly rubbed off on pal Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, who is prepping for the release on Tuesday (June 5) of his debut single, "How The F--- We Gettin' Home?!"
And just like Pauly D made sure to get a co-sign from his label boss, 50 Cent, on his musical adventures, Ronnie has lined up some famous friends to help him get the word out. The song has been circulating online for several weeks and when Ronnie recently visited a New Jersey club Lmfao's RedFoo and SkyBlu were in the house and they treated the crowd at Mur Mur to a live performance of the track, which also features Modo and Jaylyn Ducati.

"Get crazy/ get wild/ Let's party/ get loud…" Yes! Finally the theme song we've waited a whole two months for! The guidos and guidettes from the Jersey Shore are back for a fifth season of what we can assume will be full of alcohol, grenades, kooka dances and hookups. So let's jump right in! Ciao, Italia! Florence was amazing, we're sure, but the roommates were more than ready to head back home. After their flight landed and rooming arrangements were settled (it stayed the same as before, which meant The Situation is with Ron and Sam again. Should be interesting), all six of the not-as-tanned reality stars ran up those stairs to the Jersey house. So how'd they celebrate...

[1] Last month, we tipped you off [2] to an unusual project by director Edgar Wright. In his third round of programming for the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, California, Wright decided to make the theme "Movies Edgar Has Never Seen" -- and enlisted the help of famous filmmaker pals and fans alike to guide him in picking films he'd never seen, but had always wanted to watch on the big screen. He's now made his selections, with suggestions from people like Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, Judd Apatow, and Harry Knowles, and they represent a great mix of genres, tones, eras, and so on. Get the schedule for the program, which runs December 9-16, and read some of Wright's comments after the jump. In his blog, Wright wrote a bit about why he was inspired to fill a schedule with movies that were new to him. I hope in my...

Humbly submitting himself to his own cinematic blindspots!
A smart man knows things; a wise man is smart enough to know that there are things he does not know*.

For a few weeks now, Edgar Wright has proved himself a wise man, laying bare his cinematic soul, openly confessing to the classics he’s yet to see. And he’s teased us with acronyms, all in anticipation of a special select season of programming at Los Angeles’ finest repertory house, The New Beverly.
And now, Mr. Wright has finally announced the full slate of a new Wright Stuff season at the New Beverly (his third!) full of great gems that have heretofore been left unseen by his eyes. When most people (especially in this town...

Below you will find a list of movie that Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright has never seen. Not long ago Wright went out and asked his friends and fans to recommend some movies they thought he may have missed over the last thirty years of his life. He got recommendations from Quentin Tarantino, Daniel Waters, Bill Hader, John Landis, Guillermo Del Toro, Joe Dante, Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Greg Mottola, Schwartzman, Doug Benson, Rian Johnson, Larry Karaszeski, Josh Olson, Harry Knowles and hundreds of fans on this blog.
From these recommendations, Wright created a master list of recommended films that were frequently mentioned. The director now wants the fans to choose which of the films on the list he should watch on the big screen.
Wright is holding a film event at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles called Films Edgar Has Never Seen.
