This movie is one of Brian Cox's first starring roles. Cox, a natural stage actor, found the transition to screen to be very difficult, and Director Lindsay Anderson had to repeatedly get him to tone down his performance to make it more suitable for the camera.
Director Lindsay Anderson originally offered Sir Alan Bates the part of the youngest son.
Lindsay Anderson also directed the 1969 original stage production.
Cinematographer Dick Bush shot this film in the same year, 1975, that he also shot 'Tommy' (dir. Ken Russell, 1975.)
