Middle aged couple evaluate the meaning of life

A married couple with a small child are at last able to enjoy a vacation away from their structured and busy city life; or so they thought. Spending a few careless days in a rented country farm house turns out to be more than relaxing; it's a time to air bottle up grievances, cruising dangerously close to divorce.

This quiet, low budged TV movie production from pre-Reunification GDR times is reminiscent of Hollywood Classics like "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" and "The Lion In Winter"; telling the story of a couple failing to communicate despite seemingly constant conversation. Have they fallen out of love? Do they hate each other? Has their coexistence become mere routine? It is well worth the nearly 2 hours of viewing time to find satisfactory answers to these questions. The character of the vacation home care taker, and old man with signs of early dementia is a delight. I highly recommend this socially relevant film!
