Al Freeman Jr. was originally cast in the role of Red Salter. When he was unable to complete filming due to illness and other commitments, his scenes were re-shot with Greg Morris in the role.
The film,s audience in its opening week was affected by competition from two other black interest titles that also opened at the same time, Leadbelly and Sparkle.
The film is considered the first American release that was made by black professionals entirely in Africa.
Because of the rainy season that happens in Nigeria, the production required two costly trips to Africa, so that the shooting during the weather before the rain could later be completed.
