Films come in various lengths, and some filmmakers have created exceptionally long movies that push the boundaries of time. While this might seem daunting to some, it offers the opportunity to become fully engrossed in the storytelling and be transported to epic battles, as seen in such pics as War and Peace or Gettysburg, or to faraway lands, such as ancient Egypt in Cleopatra.

Star Trek: Voyager debuted 30 years ago this month, and it’s a kick to look back at the show’s earliest days. For example, the Voyager cast are the old-timers now, as Enterprise, Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy, Lower Decks, several feature films, and now Section 31 have all followed. But, when Voyager started, “typecasting” was still very much a thing, the notion being that acting in a Star Trek production could lead to trouble landing subsequent roles after a series ended because the public and entertainment industry so strongly associated an actor with their Star Trek role. More than just about anyone other than Patrick Stewart, Voyager star Kate Mulgrew has avoided that fate.
“This is such a great job and, for me, Janeway is such a great role that even if a stigma were attached to it later on, that would just be tough luck," Mulgrew told me in...

The 97th annual Oscar nominations were revealed Thursday morning in Los Angeles. And the newest lineup featured a number of historic milestones. Among them this year:
Best Picture With 13 nominations, “Emilia Perez” is the most nominated non-English-language film of all time, beating the record of 10 nominations held by “Roma” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” “Emilia Pérez” and “I’m Still Here” are also the 18th and 19th films predominantly not in the English language to be nominated for Best Picture. Both are nominated for Best International Feature – the first time ever that two nominees from that category have also been nominated for Best Picture. At 3:35, “The Brutalist” is the sixth-longest Best Picture nominee, a few minutes longer than two recent Martin Scorsese movies, “The Irishman” (3:29) and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (3:26). “Cleopatra,” from 1963, is the all-time longest Best Picture nominee at 4:11. In the entire history of the Academy Awards, only six Best Picture winners have been 100 minutes or less. It seems that traditional, Oscar-bait "prestige" pictures tend to run long, attracting Academy voters with their sheer volume. Extra-long films are also a little rare, though, as only five Best Picture Winners are 200 minutes or more. Additionally, a whopping 18 Best Pictures have been between 160 and 195 minutes, so voters clearly don't mind longer movies. Indeed, the average length of a Best Picture winner is 136 minutes. In terms of cinematic storytelling, that seems to be the sweet spot.
Of course, Roger Ebert's adage needs to be mentioned. The famed critics once posited that no good movie is too long, and no bad movie is short enough. The actual length of a film doesn't really matter, so long as it's a quality picture, and it makes good use of its time. Personally, I feel...

We hear all the time that a movie starts on the page, and while this is true in an overarching sense, for practical purposes, the process of making a motion picture intended to screen in theaters or stream into living rooms starts when you've raised enough money to hire the actors and crew and so on required to get that page-bound vision before a camera. It's at this point that you begin fretting about getting a return on your investment and, just maybe, turning a profit. In this sense, all filmmaking is risk-taking.
This is the movie business, and it didn't used to be of widespread public interest. Once in a blue moon, people would be aware that a film like Joseph L. Dune director Denis Villeneuve explains why he'll stick to making movies for now. Villeneuve got his start making short films and made his feature debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998. Since then, the Blade Runner 2049 director rose to fame through a series of critically acclaimed films, including the 2010 drama Incendies, 2013's Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, and the Oscar-nominated Arrival in 2016.
Villeneuve explained to Vanity Fair in an interview why he would likely not make any television series in his career. The director admitted that he "love[s] to love it," but he's "not inspired" by the form. Instead, he prefers the structure of movies. Check out what he said below:
I love to love it, but I am not inspired by the long form. I love the economy of time of a feature film. There's something more contained that I prefer.

The 1980s were indeed a time of cultural revolution, but there was a danger lurking under all the glamour, and it was none other than the silent killer, AIDS. Most societies turned a blind eye to the epidemic, including celebrities who did not want to be associated with the disease.

But in these times that required change and perspective, there was one legendary figure who became our voice of compassion and hope. Dame Elizabeth Taylor, an actress who is known for her luminous Hollywood career, was brave enough to take on an unglamorous yet heroic role that involved raising awareness for HIV/AIDS.

The Fall Of The Roman Empire Comparison (Photo Credit – Facebook)
With Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II continuing to draw big numbers at the box office, conversations about the potential for a third installment are taking off, with the prolific filmmaker already calling in its favor. The sequel to the Academy Award-winning Gladiator saw Scott return to the helm, continuing a story loosely inspired by historical events. Adding Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington to the beloved franchise, the big-budget tentpole’s ability to blend melodrama with history has been a significant draw for audiences worldwide.
While Gladiator features characters based on historical Roman citizens like Joaquin Phoenix’s Emperor Commodus and Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla, the story nevertheless took creative liberties, notably with Russell Crowe’s Maximus. This character replaced Narcissus, a real-life wrestler who assassinated Emperor Commodus. Despite these alterations, the film’s narrative entertained audiences’ imaginations with...

Thom Christopher, the Daytime Emmy-winning actor who portrayed the mobster Carlo Hesser and his meeker twin brother, Mortimer Bern, on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, has died. He was 84.
Christopher died Thursday in a New York hospital after a long illness, his friend, photographer Steven Bergman, announced.
The native New Yorker also was known for his turn as the stoic, half-man, half-bird alien Hawk (think Mr. Spock on Star Trek) on the second season of the 1979-81 NBC series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. He often shared scenes with Felix Silla’s robot Twiki.
Christopher joined One Life to Live in 1990 as the drug trafficker Carlo — he was only supposed to work one day on the daytime drama — and would seek revenge against the Buchanan family after his son Johnny (Anthony Crivello) is killed by Viki Buchanan (Erika Slezak).

Everything old was new again at this year’s Cairo Film Festival.
Filling out a super-sized 45th edition, the Egyptian event introduced a new section dedicated to heritage titles, showcasing 10 gems of world cinema, among them titles like “The Lonely Wife” and “The Color of Pomegranates” to mark the centenaries of film greats Satyajit Ray and Sergei Parajanov, as well as 4K restorations of “The Godfather Part II,” “The Thief of Baghdad” and “Cleopatra,” among several more.
As part of a bolstered Cairo Classics program, the festival also premiered 14 milestones of Egyptian cinema freshly remastered and reintroduced to an eager public. And as the Cairo Film Festival charts a new course under president Hussein Fahmy and artistic director Essam Zakarea, this restorative vocation will stay a cornerstone of their wider mission.
“Egyptian cinema is one of the oldest in the world, but we have a problem with our archive,” Zakarea tells Variety.

This week, the latest writer looking to bring the films back to the big screen is Simon Kinberg, the writer behind many of the X-Men movies. No one knows what those movies are going to be about just yet either, or when they could come out.

David Fincher is the director behind influential movies like Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac, not to mention having a hand in foundational series like House of Cards. The director has worked closely with Netflix in recent years, releasing solid movies like The Killer and great shows like Mindhunter. And now, Deadline has it that his next project may be an English-language remake of Squid Game.
The first season of Squid Game dropped back in 2021. It wasn't just a hit; it became Netflix's most-streamed show ever, which surprised a lot of people. Who expected a Korean-language drama about debt-ridden people battling for their lives for the amusement of sadistic billionaires would be this big of a hit? Makes you think.
Anyway, Netflix capitalized on the success of Squid Game with an unscripted reality show called Squid Game: The Challenge, not to mention a second season of the original show coming out this December.

Horror movies have notoriously been snubbed by the Academy Awards, even though so many scary movies clearly deserved to win Oscars. This has become especially apparent with the power of hindsight, as years later, many of the actual Oscar winners have mostly been forgotten by viewers while these horror releases have endured through the ages. The sheer terror and emotion on display in horror movies were also ripe territory for fantastic performances that never got the accolades they deserved.
Many of the best horror movies of all time came out of awards season Oscar-less, and even though most viewers would agree they deserved the award, it seemed the Academy thought differently. Even the technical achievements of horror movies rarely got their due, as categories related to makeup, visual effects, and cinematography have been continually passed over in favor of more Oscar-friendly films. While its impossible to go back and change the past,...

“More effort than it’s worth” possibly represents the harshest 5 words that can be strung together in the English language. For a film, that statement guarantees an immediate death sentence. In the case of Antonio Banderas’ The 13th Warrior, it spelled the extinction of an entire genre: the Muslim hero archetype.

When the British Film Institute's official publication, Sight and Sound, released its decennial "Greatest Films of All Time" list in 2022, there was a notable -- some might say shocking -- omission from the top 100: David Lean's unimpeachably masterful epic, "Lawrence of Arabia," was nowhere to be found. Though the film had been sliding down the list throughout the early 21st century (it ranked 51 in 2002 and tumbled to 81 in 2012), many of us felt there was a floor for a film as universally revered as Lean's biographical drama about the turbulent (likely exaggerated) desert adventures of T.E. Lawrence. Even though the film does have a white savior element to it, Lean, screenwriter Robert Bolt, and star Peter O'Toole portray Lawrence as a dangerous thrill-seeker with a messiah complex. His fervor is both rousing and terrifying.

Despite high hopes for the franchise's future, the best possible outcome for Sicario 3 now seems impossible. 2015's Sicario was one of the decade's most critically acclaimed crime/action thrillers, with a terrific combination of Denis Villeneuve's directing and Taylor Sheridan's writing. Funnily enough, the film was released before either of them reached their current level of acclaim, with Villeneuve widely praised for his work on the Dune films and Taylor Sheridan's TV shows becoming some of the most popular on streaming. Sicario: Day of the Soldado was released in 2018, with Sheridan writing but Stefan's Sollima subbed in to direct.

Denis Villeneuve's last two feature films were 2021's "Dune" and 2024's "Dune: Part Two," collectively an adaptation of Frank Herbert's celebrated 1965 sci-fi epic set in the distant, distant future. Villeneuve's "Dune" films removed a lot of the eerie mysticism of Herbert's works, focusing instead on the book's sociopolitical underpinnings. They told a story of how religions are deliberately wielded by cynical political power-seekers to topple existing regimes, and how those regimes can, in turn, be manipulated by different shady religious zealots. The main character of the film was Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a young prince who escaped assassination, fled into the deserts of the planet Arrakis, took solace among the remote desert-dwelling people, and -- thanks to the machinations of his mother -- became the desert's Messiah. He then returned to overthrow the killer Harkonnen family.

Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve explains why Dune: Messiah won't be part of a franchise trilogy. After closing the first part of Paul Atreides' (Timothe Chalamet) journey with Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve is currently hard at work developing the story outline for Dune: Messiah, which is based on the Frank Herbert book of the same name. The story is set twelve years after the events of Dune and concludes Atreides' story within the Known Universe.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Villeneuve argues why his upcoming adaptation of Dune: Messiah will not be part of a trilogy. Stating that the first two Dune films he helmed were part of a diptych, Villeneuve says that the third movie will have its own identity and contain a brand-new cinematic philosophy. Check out what he said on the matter below:

Steady your sandworms and sound the space bagpipes — Dune news coming through! It's been an interesting few months for fans of the Dcu (that's the Dune Cinematic Universe), with confirmation coming back in April that a Dune Part Three is officially in the works at Legendary, and then further reports in June placing an 'Untitled Event Film' from director Denis Villeneuve in Warner Bros.' slate for December 2026. Now, in an interview with Vanity Fair for their "Little Gold Men" podcast, Villeneuve has confirmed that Dune: Messiah is currently being written — and, more importantly, the Quebecois filmmaker's third trip to Arrakis will also be his last.
When asked about his progress on a follow-up to Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve — who says he sees Dune: Messiah as its own thing and his first two Frank Herbert adaptations as a self-contained diptych ("It's not like a trilogy") — revealed his desire to exit...

70mm is back! Thanks to Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan, one of the oldest and grandest traditions in Hollywood is making a comeback after years of financial setbacks and near-extinction. As Nolan has said many times, shooting in 70mm proved an immersive and more textured experience than any other form of cinema.
Due to the costly nature of film and theaters’ lack of 70mm projectors, it’s been quite a challenge to get to a place where Tarantino and Nolan can make entire features using 65/70mm, but the preservation of film is turning in their favor.
Below, we’ve gathered 20 of the most essential 70mm film releases. From Stanley Kubrick to William Wyler and David Lean, it’s clear shooting in 70mm is mandatory for any epic filmmaker.

Back in 2014, Sony found itself amidst a devastating hacking attack, leading to the leak of a boatload of confidential data from Sony Pictures Entertainment. This involved an appalling exchange between producer Scott Rudin and the former Sony studio head Amy Pascal, in which the former had some less-than-thrilling words about Angelina Jolie.

But despite being at the end of the insults in the exchange, she was unshaken by the producer’s comments, who claimed the actress was a minimally talented spoiled brat.

Cleopatra was a box office triumph but a financial disaster, quadrupling its budget and facing scandals and delays. The film covered every detail of Cleopatra's tragic story, from her alliance with Caesar to her love affair with Mark Antony. Despite being the top movie of 1963, Cleopatra's massive budget, behind-the-scenes drama, and controversies led to it being a financial flop.
1963's Cleopatra was a triumph at the box office, topping the charts for that year, but the four-hour epic still managed to be a complete financial fail. The film, which starred Elizabeth Taylor in the titular role, along with Richard Burton as Mark Antony and Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar, was steeped in controversy during its years of development. It seemed like everything that could go wrong did, and each mistake and scandal made the bill climb ever higher. By the time Cleopatra was released in 1963, it had quadrupled its budget,...

Emma Watson’s transition from child star to global icon has been marked by a blend of self-awareness and maturity. Unlike many of her predecessors, Watson has skillfully balanced the demands of fame with a focus on personal growth and authenticity. This is particularly noteworthy considering that Emma Watson joined the Harry Potter franchise at just nine years old.

This stands in contrast to earlier stars like Elizabeth Taylor, who, despite her remarkable talent, experienced the pressures of growing up in the public eye, including having her first kiss on screen – a milestone that can feel particularly invasive. Watson has expressed gratitude for avoiding such early, highly scrutinized moments.

One of cinema’s earliest pioneers, Oscar winner Cecil B. DeMille helmed 70 films throughout the silent and sound era. He made his mark in a number of genres, but was most famous for his spectacularly mounted biblical epics. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1881, DeMille made his directorial debut with “The Squaw Man” (1914), a story he remade in 1918 and 1931. He made dozens of silent films, including the ambitious biblical stories “The Ten Commandments” (1923) and “The King of Kings” (1927). He entered into the sound era with ease, earning his first Oscar nomination in Best Picture for the Claudette Colbert-headlined version of “Cleopatra” (1934).
After a series of box office smashes, he took home the Best Picture prize for his big top melodrama “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1952), which also brought him his only nomination in Best Director. Even at the time,...

Lots of things make Ridley Scott grumpy. Critics of "Blade Runner" make him grumpy. All of those millennials not watching "The Last Duel" make him grumpy. The idea of making "wizard films" for Disney makes him grumpy. The world seems like one big inconvenience to the octogenarian, to the extent that it's not really accurate to say these things make him grumpy. Much like Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner in "The Avengers," the secret to Scott's remarkably durable crotchetiness is that he's always grumpy.
None of this, of course, takes away from the man's equally remarkable filmography. While there are several dubious entries on that list, anyone who made "Blade Runner" is, in my opinion, unimpeachably brilliant. Still, I implore you to take a quick peek at Scott's Wikipedia page and marvel at the sheer level of irascibility emanating from his photo in what is surely the most accurate visual...

Those About to Die, which was filmed in Rome's Cinecitt Studios, offers a gritty look at Ancient Roman gladiators' harsh lives. Producers aimed for authenticity, collaborating with Italian museums to create accurate period replicas. Peacock's epic series displaced Gladiator 2 by booking Cinecitt Studios for its production.
Peacock's newest series, the sword-and-sandal epic Those About to Die, has marathon viewers wondering where the 10-episode gladiator show was filmed. Directed by Hollywood's so-called "master of disaster" Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) and penned by BAFTA winner Marco Kreuzpaintner (Bodies), Those About to Die adapts Daniel P. Mannix's bestselling 1958 book of the same name. Funnily enough, Mannix's Those About to Die novel (later retitled The Way of the Gladiator) was one of the key inspirations for Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000), which makes the adaptation's debut mere months before Gladiator 2 a fun bit of serendipity.

Younger readers might be shocked to hear this, but back in the mid-90s "The Simpsons" was nothing short of a phenomenon. While it has now become a sort of incongruous TV specter, simultaneously forgotten but somehow still haunting the airwaves with new episodes, "The Simpsons" was once about as popular as TV shows get. After "Married with Children" helped put Fox on the map by proving dysfunctional TV families could work just as well as the more wholesome fare being offered elsewhere, things were perfectly primed for "The Simpsons" to dominate — and dominate it did.
"Simpsons" mania was a real and inexorable force during the height of the show's popularity, and not just in the US. As a BBC Two documentary for the show's ten-year anniversary explained, the series created a "bonanza," whereby its biggest breakout star, Bart Simpson, became fodder for global bootleggers — surely the clearest sign that...

Whitewashing of Egyptian gods with white actors led to a negative impact on Gods of Egypt. Lack of diversity in casting choices resulted in backlash, poor reviews, and financial failure. Movie's failure at the box office emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusivity in Hollywood.
Gods of Egypt faced heavy backlash ahead of its theatrical release. Directed by Alex Proyas, the 2016 historical fantasy epic received a great deal of attention, due in large part to its ensemble cast. However, that didn't lead to it becoming a smash hit at the box office or a critical success. The discourse surrounding the film was overwhelmingly negative, so much that it had to be addressed publicly by those involved.
Rather, Gods of Egypt was considered a failure across the board. Firstly, its box office haul of $150 million barely exceeded the cost to make the film ($140 million). Its critical reception hardly helped matters, with...

Warner Bros. has slated an “Untitled Denis Villeneuve Event Film” for a December 18, 2026 release, leading some to wonder whether this could be Dune 3.
According to Deadline, they’re still working on the script for Dune 3, which is said to be an adaptation of Dune Messiah, and locking in the cast, so it’s entirely possible this new project could be Villeneuve’s final movie in the franchise. That said, the director has previously admitted that he wanted to take a break from Arrakis after spending the last six years working on the first two movies.

Cleopatra's Battle of Actium scene gets a brutal 2/10 rating for historical inaccuracies in naval tactics and ship design. Twentieth Century-Fox sacrificed realism for spectacle in the bloated, over-budget epic film starring Elizabeth Taylor. Gal Gadot is set to star in a new Cleopatra movie.
Elizabeth Taylor's 1963 historical epic Cleopatra is brutally assessed by an expert, who calls the film's big naval battle scene overall terrible. The most expensive movie ever made at the time of release, Taylors sprawling star vehicle about the exploits of the famed Queen of Egypt became notorious as one of the all-time flops in film history. Contributing to the movies inflated $31 million budget was an epic scene of naval warfare, set during the Battle of Actium, where the forces of Roman emperor Octavian defeated the combined fleets of allies Queen Cleopatra and Mark Antony.
Not only was Cleopatras Battle of Actium scene hugely expensive, it also wasnt very historically accurate,...

Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episodes 1 through 8.
"Pretty Little Liars: Summer School" offers a bright summer slasher vibe with familiar characters and a new villain. Returning characters face new challenges as they navigate summer school and encounter the mysterious "Bloody Rose." The Max show's soundtrack includes popular songs like "School's Out" by Alice Cooper and "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama.
Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is a stark contrast to Original Sin, with brighter tones, sunny vibes, and, of course, several pop hits that are perfect for summer break. The slasher and horror elements are still present (proven by the haunting instrumental additions to the show's score) as the five teenagers recover from their experience with "A," aka Archie Waters, and try to move on. However, a new villain named "Bloody Rose" throws a wrench into the characters' plans in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

Martin Landau is the Oscar-winning thespian who enjoyed one of the greatest late career renaissances in cinema history, hitting his stride in his 60’s and remaining active until his death in 2017. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, Landau first came to the attention of movie audiences with a villainous role in Alfred Hitchcock‘s “North by Northwest” (1959). He became a television star playing Rollin Hand on “Mission: Impossible,” for which he received three consecutive Emmy nominations as Best Drama Actor (1967-1968) and a Golden Globe victory in 1968.
After decades of bit roles in B-movies and guest spots on TV (including playing a bad guy on “Columbo”), Landau enjoyed a major career comeback thanks to Francis Ford Coppola‘s “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” (1988), for which he won the Golden Globe and earned his first...
