The play opened in New York City, New York, USA on 28 January 1944 and ran for 481 performances, closing 17 May 1945. The stars were June Havoc and Bobby Clark, and included Luba Malina, who is also in this movie. Because Bud Abbott and Lou Costello fans expressed annoyance about so many musical numbers in their films, none of Cole Porter's music was used in this picture. In a deleted scene, Virginia Grey and John Hubbard sing "I Love You."
Patricia Alphin was originally cast as Montana, but she was replaced after three days' shooting by Virginia Grey.
Neither Abbott nor Costello wanted to make this movie. Bud hated the script; Lou wanted a different cast. Universal suspended both of them for a week, and filming began two days behind schedule.
