Gary Cooper originally did not want to play a father of grown children. This was despite the fact that he was 55 in real life. Ironically, many critics in 1956 felt he looked too old to play Jess Birdwell.

A real picture in a film (see the technique in the opening); what a sympathetic and sweet way to see US Civil War. Unforgettable !!!

This is a genuine masterpiece of the great William Wyler. Perhaps the most careful director of all time Hollywood history. Only his hands could do so. An incomparable director. After 43 years still a freshly and delicious picture, a real portrait of sensibility !
