At the end of Peter Godfrey’s “Christmas in Connecticut” — the greatest Christmas movie of all time (don’t fight me on this) — beloved character actor Sydney Greenstreet, having just emerged from a comedy kerfuffle of epic proportions, can think of nothing more to do than throw his mighty head in the air and declare “What a Christmas! Ho ho, what a Christmas!”
I could also think of little else to say, at first, about Tyler Taormina’s peculiar and lovely “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point.” What a Christmas indeed. The film is an eclectic hodgepodge of realism and dreamlike, dare I say Lynchian mannerisms. It’s set in the 2000s but it belts wall-to-wall mid-20th century pop hits, like a family-friendly cousin to Kenneth Anger’s “Scorpio Rising.” When Peggy March’s “Wind-Up Doll” drowns out the family playtime, you can half imagine the leathery biker tinkering in the garage.

Turner Classic Movies, the leading authority and definitive home of classic film, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 14, 2024. To honor the milestone, TCM will present on-air programming salutes featuring TCM staff who were there from the very beginning, as well as a 24-hour marathon of films with historical introductions from TCM’s first host and champion, Robert Osborne.
“How many other channels on television celebrate their anniversary? How many other channels’ fans know where they were the day a network launched?” says TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz. “I’m not sure either of those things are true without Robert Osborne. He’s the Walter Cronkite of TCM. The Johnny Carson. The Alex Trebek. With these intros of Robert’s, we’re celebrating his impact and his continued influence. Plus, as we do with the movies we show, we’ll put Robert into context. Additionally, we’ll also look back...

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

I love Arnold Schwarzenegger. I’ve seen every movie he’s done. Read his book. Follow his newsletter (which I totally recommend if you’re looking for a bit of healthy positivity in your day). Can spell his last name without Googling it. I grew up looking up to him as a father figure and still do to this day. He’s one of those special people you can look to for positivity and motivation when you’re feeling down. An actual positive male role model who just wants you to eat right, lift weights, and be kind. Oh, and he hosted and directed an episode of Tales from the Crypt once and owns a miniature horse named Whiskey that he lets live in the house with him.
What’S Not To Love?!
As you can tell, I am very excited to go through Arnold’s brief but legendary career...

The premise was simple enough: A no-nonsense, non-conformist, feminine “guy’s girl” journalist sets out to make a man fall in love with her — all for the sake of a big break at work. When “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” hit theaters on February 7, 2003, the Kate Hudson- and Matthew McConaughey-starring romantic comedy ushered in a new generation of a revived rom-com sub-genre: quippy romances all about female journalists.
In the Donald Petrie film, Andie Anderson (Hudson) half-jokingly pitches the idea of using all the “what not to do” tips of Composure, the Cosmo-esque fastest growing women’s magazine she works at, to prove the opposite: being disinterested and not clingy works better to land a husband, or better yet, find true love. Kathryn Hahn is her unlucky-in-love coworker whose exploits inspire Andie’s approach to a new lifestyle feature article, while Bebe Neuwirth is her...

There's nothing like decorating the tree with "Home Alone" or "The Santa Clause" playing in the background, or gathering around the TV for both versions of "Miracle on 34th Street." These films are well-worn and comfortable, already popular for decades. But while friends and families may appreciate these ubiquitous favorites, they likely watch a few hidden gems every season, too -- those films that, while they may not dominate the airwaves, are considered classics by the people who love them most.
Long before Hallmark became the biggest purveyor of holiday rom-coms, theaters showcased a great range of Yuletide fare. This was particularly true in the 1940s, which the British Film Institute called "the golden age of the Christmas movie." There's much more to that decade than "It's a Wonderful Life," but as time marches on, more and more holiday films fail to get the recognition they should.

Don’t be an angry elf or a cotton-headed ninny muggins! ‘Tis the season for all things Christmas — candy canes, silver bells and, of course, that means it’s finally time to watch “Elf.”
Starring Will Ferrell as Buddy — a human raised in the North Pole to believe he’s an elf — the holiday comedy follows Buddy from the safety of Santa’s Workshop to the hectic streets of New York City, where he goes on the search to find his biological father.
Directed by future “Iron Man” and “The Mandalorian” filmmaker Jon Favreau and starring Ferrell fresh off of his legendary “SNL” career, the 2003 gem “Elf” has become a modern Christmas classic and yearly must-watch for families around the world.
So if you’re wondering where to watch ‘Elf’ in 2022, not to worry, we’ve got you covered with a handy guide where it’s streaming, airing and available...

"True Lies" is the red-headed stepchild of James Cameron movies. Even "The Abyss" has petitions for a 4K release, but poor "True Lies" seems to be totally ignored by Fox/Disney and Mr. Cameron. But you know who hasn't forgotten "True Lies?" That's right, the real ones like you and me. We remember. And so does Jamie Lee Curtis, who told a great anecdote a while back about how her famous co-star was doubtful about her being cast as his on-screen wife.
Why, pray tell, was Arnold Schwarzenegger so doubtful about Jamie Lee Curtis playing his wife? Well, turns out it has nothing to do with Jamie Lee's talent, but that they had a personal real-life connection that made it awkward for him.
Some context first: in the movie, Jamie Lee Curtis plays Helen Tasker, a normal mom and wife who is pulled into a world of danger and espionage...

Despite the increase in pop-culture amnesia, there are actually a lot of great rom-coms that predate the Reagan era
For many pop-culture websites, which we will not name here, the history of cinema apparently begins somewhere around the release of “Star Wars” (1977), with almost everything that preceded it to the big screen being sloughed off as quaint, forgettable and irrelevant.
It’s the sort of thing that people who love movies and movie history can often ignore with the roll of an eye, but when one site recently trumpeted its list of the 50 Best Rom-Coms of All Time — which featured exactly one movie made before 1980 and zero prior to 1970 — we could sit by no longer.
Here is an alphabetical list of 50 classic romantic comedies that merely scratches the surface of great movies made during ye olden times of 1979 and earlier:

I’m guessing that you, just like most of us, have always had seasonal favorites when it comes to movies that attempt to address and evoke the spirit of Christmas. Like most from my generation, when I was a kid I learned the pleasures of perennial anticipation of Christmastime as interpreted by TV through a series of holiday specials, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and even musical variety hours where the likes of Bing Crosby and Andy Williams and Dean Martin et al would sit around sets elaborately designed to represent the ideal Christmas-decorated living room, drinking “wassail” (I’m sure that’s what was in those cups) and crooning classics of the season alongside a dazzling array of guests. (We knew we were moving into a new world of holiday cheer when David Bowie joined Bing Crosby for...

“Maybe scarlet fever. It’s a better color for Christmas!”

In August, the Austin Film Society series "Stanwyck in Her Prime" showcased some of the titles that made Barbara Stanwyck one of the greatest actresses of her generation. It featured such classic Stanwyck staples as Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve (1941) and Ball of Fire (1941), both essential highlights in Stanwyck's stellar career. As a result of the series popularity, and since it's the holidays, I thought I'd spotlight the few but worthwhile Christmas movies Stanwyck starred in.
Not many think of Stanwyck as an actress who would be caught dead in a Christmas movie. Her brand of playing women both tough and tragic made her one of the most formidable screen heroines of all time. And yet, if you are a fan of Stanwyck's, its not surprising to see her in these films since they provided the actress grade-a roles with directors and co-stars also at the top of their game.

Alexa here. This week is cookie week in my house: the kitchen gets covered in flour and sugar in my attempt to craft cookies pretty as Martha's. I thought I'd try some new recipes this year, inspired by the world of film instead of M. Diddy. When I heard about The Dead Celebrity Cookbook Presents Christmas in Tinseltown I thought I'd check it out; I was sold when I saw it included Robert Mitchum's recipe for egg nog and Joan Crawford's recipe for angel food cake. First, though, I decided to try my hand at Barbara Stanwyck's family recipe for Christmas Kipfels during my yearly viewing of Christmas in Connecticut. With a little modification (rolling the dough instead of folding it, similar to rugelach), they were a snap.
With this recipe you won't need help from Felix
And so delicious! So I was inspired to seek out other celebrity cookie recipes.

A classy dame. A dynamite broad. A tough cookie. The language is definitely un-pc…and yet, it seems not only proper but singularly apt when talking about Barbara Stanwyck. It was the language of the day when her star soared off into the ascent, and it would remain so her over the course of a 60-year career on stage, film, and TV, it would be criminal to clean it up for politeness’ sake. It was the kind of language she unabashedly used herself in her later years, describing herself frankly, bluntly, and with characteristic modesty – as was her wont – as “…a tough old broad from Brooklyn.”

He was the toast of Broadway with roles in Hello Dolly and Bye, Bye, Birdie and won the Tony for How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Later in life he directed several plays on the Great White Way. While many actors sum up their lives in thick tomes, Charles created a one-man show. He was a stage performer so this was the best way to distill his experiences for an audience. The Life of Reilly captures his final performance before his passing in 2007.
After playing the festival circuit and a limited theatrical release, Life of Reilly is finally out on DVD, Blu-ray and iTunes. You can take Charles every where. In edition to the feature film, there’s tons of bonus features including...

The Fine Brothers, an internet comedy duo that speaks fast and spoils movies, is back to spit in your eggnog this holiday season with “50 Christmas Spoilers in 3 Minutes.”
Faster than you can go a-wasailling, Benny and Rafi Fine spoil every Christmas movie you’ve ever heard of — and some that you haven’t. As with all Fine Brothers YouTube videos, there are two types of viewers.
The first love the spitfire, spoiler-soaked, saccharin snark and wish the yucksters plenty of presents under the Christmas tree. Or menorah. The other, perhaps the Grinches of the group, want to stuff the boys’ faces with figgy pudding to dam the endless patter of plot-ruining banter.
Where do you fall on the Fines? While you chew that over, here’s a list of all 50 Christmas films:
A Christmas Carol, Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (1951), A Christmas Carol (2009), The Muppet Christmas Carol, Mickey’s Christmas Carol,...
