William Shakespeare's play is thought to have been written between 1591 and 1596 (most likely in the mid-1590s). The first documented performance took place in 1662.
According to a March, 1917, article in Photoplay by Lillian Howard, Beverly Bayne made herself an expert on historical costuming when working on this film and designed at least one of her own costumes: a black velvet and satin dress with a white lace shawl collar and slashed puff sleeves was inspired by an unspecified painting by Anthony Van Dyck.
