Amat Escalante’s “Lost in the Night” (Original title: Perdidos en la noche) is driven towards an exploration of guilt, regret, and morality. It skewers the class divides rampant as they are in its setting of Mexico. Across the rural space, the markers of denomination, hierarchies of privilege, and exclusion are starkly evident. As the less-endowed strike out against injustice and exploitation, down comes a brutal hammer. It’s a morally murky quagmire Escalante depicts, hinting at a worldview refusing to trade in clear-cut binaries. The bad guys express remorse, and the good one who has the right on their side don’t always do morally favorable things.
Escalante surprises, especially since the thematic terrain of class conflicts is a well-trod one. So, he genuflects on the characterization, amping up unexpected discoveries and realizations shifting across a morally nebulous spectrum. No person is wholly avaricious, they have quite a few redeeming qualities.

Hunter x Hunter has been critically acclaimed as one of the best manga and anime of all time. However, the series has been in a tricky situation for a long time as the author has been unwell and bedridden for quite a while now. This led to multiple breaks and a long hiatus for the series.

Destruction have announced their 16th studio album, Birth of Malice, arriving March 7th via Nuclear Blast Records. The video for the second single, the eponymous track “Destruction,” can be streamed now.
Releasing a self-titled song this deep into their career is a bold move, but the German thrash vets pull it off, delivering a proper anthem that captures the essence of the band, its fans, and its legacy: “We are Destruction!” This is full-bore thrash with a punkish snarl and a raw, live-sound production — complemented by some excellent concert footage of the band and its rabid fanbase in the accompanying video.
“The crushing song ‘Destruction’ is the perfect opener for this album: It builds a bridge between our old-school sound and riffing, including song title phrases from classic Destruction tracks and more shredding and melodic twin lead guitars that will pinch your brain with its razorsharp leads!” enthused the band via a press release.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired “The Penguin Lessons,” an uplifting dramedy starring Steve Coogan as a teacher who forms an unlikely bond with a feathered friend.
Peter Cattaneo directed the film, which premiered at this year’s Toronto Film Festival. It’s adapted by Jeff Pope from Tom Michell’s 2016 memoir. It follows a cynical British professor who takes a job in Argentina in the 1970s during a period of political upheaval, only to find his life transformed when he rescues a oil-soaked penguin from a beach. Under the deal, Sony Pictures Classics has distribution rights in North America, the Middle East, Turkey, Asia, India, Japan and South Korea.
In Variety’s review, critic Guy Lodge described “The Penguin Lessons” as a “heartwarming tale of human-animal bonding” and praised the eponymous penguin, writing that “almost inevitably, it’s best when it’s about the bird.”

Dermot Mulroney has a long, decorated resume. He's one of those actors you recognize even if you don't know his name. He's also a good indication that what you're watching is of quality.
Mulroney has been on countless hit shows over the last three decades, and he's going to keep his winning streak going with Chicago Fire. Unsurprisingly, though, this will not be the first time the actor has entered the world of first responder TV. He actually had an extended role on the Grey's Anatomy spinoff Station 19.

Hunter x Hunter’s rise to peak has been one of the greatest stories ever. Yoshihiro Togashi’s magnum opus was a massive hit upon its release. Gon Freecs’ journey to find his father soon became dangerous and tiresome. It is a Shonen anime but often took a dark turn, especially during the Chimera Ant arc. Unfortunately, the manga is currently on a hiatus. Hunter x Hunter fans are habituated to long hiatuses due to the mangaka’s serious health issues.
Hunter x Hunter began its serialization in the 1990s, but it is yet to conclude. Recently, an old picture of Yoshihiro Togashi surfaced online, and fans had several thoughts regarding it. The picture looked like the mangaka was leading the life of a messy Shonen protagonist. His fans became creative and came up with different theories surrounding the image.

Dead Wrong showcases Rob Schneider's dramatic chops in a mob drama that explores the consequences of a lawyer's gambling addiction. Schneider's character, Ethan Boggs, brings charm and relatability to the role, revealing hope even in his darkest moments in the criminal world. The film delves into relationships and moral complexities, with Schneider's performance guided by director Rick Bieber's vision of a desperate attorney stuck in a dangerous game.
Rob Schneider trades in his SNL-style comedy cred for mob drama in Dead Wrong, written and directed by Rick Bieber. Based on K.E. Clarks novel Deadly Instinct, Dead Wrong sees Schneider play a lawyer with a gambling addiction who finds himself mixed up in a life of crime thanks to his many misdeeds. The movie also stars Derek Smith, Chet Hanks, 30 Rock's Katrina Bowden, and Black Lightning's Cress Williams.

If Hollywood truly suffers from a leadership malaise, as some charge, would the return of Monroe Stahr resuscitate the system? Filmmakers respect his judgment, stars his panache and investors his discipline, so Stahr’s return may ignite a new Irving Thalberg-like era.
Whoops — he’s not available.
The manic and manipulative hero of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon ruled MGM in its ‘30s heyday, but Stahr’s fictional reign was short-lived. So was Fitzgerald’s brilliant but never completed 1939 novel, which modeled Stahr after Thalberg.
Having achieved literary stardom with The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald’s decision to write a Hollywood novel, while simultaneously working as a script doctor, plunged the novelist into alcoholic paralysis. He never managed to finish his book and even his screenplays were unrealized.

Last year, legendary filmmaker John Carpenter teamed up with Shout! Factory to host a kaiju movie marathon called Masters of Monsters, which consisted of the original Godzilla film, Rodan; Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, and The War of the Gargantuas. That marathon was re-run earlier this month. Now the folks at Far Out magazine have dug up a 1996 article from Film Comment magazine in which Carpenter named The War of the Gargantuas as “the ultimate Japanese monster movie” – and included it on a list of his seventeen favorite “guilty pleasure” movies. It’s a fun list, so we have it included below, with thanks to this site.
Carpenter started out the Film Comment guilty pleasures article by saying, “I wasn’t raised a Catholic, so guilt never played much of a role in my life. We Methodists don’t worry about guilt all that much. In terms of cinema, however, guilt has always been very important.

Britain’s official post-wwi administration of Palestine lasted from 1920-48 and is probably the UK colonial enterprise least addressed by its fiction filmmakers. But now prolific writer-director Michael Winterbottom uses that complicated era as a backdrop to the compelling historical romance “Shoshana.” A passion project 15 years in the making and based on real people and events, the film employs the ill-fated, cross-cultural relationship between a ranking member of the British Palestine Police Force and a young Jewish woman to explore the way extremism and violence push people apart, forcing them to choose sides.
It’s worth noting upfront that while the British rulers had to deal with both Palestine’s Arab and Jewish citizens, each of whom want an independent country, the narrative here hews firmly to a British and Jewish p.o.v., with Arabs barely characterized except as victims and troublemakers. By the 1930s, Palestine is a cauldron...

Exclusive: Four years after his last full-length feature — the black comedy Greed, starring Steve Coogan as a venal business tycoon — Michael Winterbottom is back, this time with a political drama set in Tel Aviv, based on real-life people and events that occurred during the 1930s, in the run-up to the foundation of Israel in 1948.

There are obscure treasures and there are holy grails. Of the latter, none is more mythic than the original 131-minute cut of Orson Welles’s The Magnificent Ambersons, believed by many to be lost somewhere in Brazil. All others arguably belong to Erich von Stroheim. Born in Vienna in 1885 into a Jewish household, von Stroheim is mostly remembered for playing evil Germans in films like Jean Renoir’s Grand Illusion. Cinephiles, though, know him as the unluckiest auteur in the history of cinema.
Intended to run anywhere between six and 10 hours, many of von Stroheim’s films, from Greed to the Gloria Swanson vehicle Queen Kelly, were severely bastardized by studio heads upon their release. In this context, the iris shot that opens 1922’s Foolish Wives feels especially poignant. This is no ordinary “fade into” effect, but an entrancing reinforcement of the sinister, insular, and constrictive nature of the film’s milieu.

In every decade since the inception of cinema, Westerns have been a staple for moviegoers, consistently undergoing new evolutions and sometimes entire regenerations. With every decade has come a new genre-defining addition to the Western canon, which began with simple, short black-and-white pictures at the end of the 19th century, experienced revolutionary upheaval in the 1960s due to Italian innovation, and has seen recent remodelling with popular neo-Western films. Throughout these changes have been constant thematic, artistic, and narrative traits that define what it means to be a Western – timeless messages about violence and greed that transcend eras and ensure that the genre is relatable for all audiences.
Westerns have ascended many legendary filmmakers and actors to stardom, whilst also having a remarkable track record for excellent adaptations from the genre’s eclectic literary oeuvre. Though some decades have seen greater success for the category than others each has had its own admirable offering.

Ken Jacobs is now immortalized as a Museum of Modern Art filmmaker.
The experimental Brooklyn-based filmmaker will now have a large collection at the Manhattan museum, making MoMA the singular repository of works of the moving-image artist. The Museum of Modern Art purchased films and videos created by Jacobs, with the titles joining the other 14 Jacobs works already housed at the museum.
Jacobs has credited his discovery of the movies to his youthful trips to MoMA in the late 1940s, recalling that “the Museum of Modern Art plunged me, when a teenager, into the unexpectedness of art.”
He added in a statement to IndieWire, “Eastern District High School in Williamsburg gave me a pass to MoMA, where I saw ‘Greed,’ Chaplin, Vertov. I’m delighted that MoMA is now acquiring my long life’s cine-output.”

In creative terms, episodic television is inescapably a writer's medium. Even in the hands of a visual auteur like David Lynch, a series' chief responsibility is to compel the viewer to come back for more. It's novelistic in form, which may be why some of the greatest series of the Peak TV era — "The Sopranos," "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men" — climax in their penultimate episode, and end with an hour-long denouement.
Those series also sprawled. "Breaking Bad" was the shortest with five seasons, but it didn't really find its footing until season 2. Jesse Armstrong's "Succession," however, hit the ground flouncing with its first episode. It has always been a tightly focused, unrepentantly mean-spirited examination of a corroded family. It may be redundant at times (an unavoidable hazard given the characters' inherent corruption; these people were only ever awful), but the narrative never felt constructed for a ratings-enhanced long haul.

This article contains spoilers for "The Last of Us" and its video game source material.
The original Joel Miller shows up in HBO's adaptation of "The Last of Us" — just not in his original part. Troy Baker, who voiced and mo-capped Joel in the video game, plays James, the right-hand man of Bible-quoting cannibal David (Scott Shepherd). It might seem like a downgrade, but Baker was surprised to get even that substantive a part.
Speaking to Deadline about his experience on the series, Baker described how Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann came to him with the part:
"Neil was coy about this potential role. He was like, 'So, there's a character that we have in mind for you, if you're interested. If you don't feel interested, it's totally fine.' And I'm like, 'Dude, if there's anything for me ..." Look, I thought I was going to be a Clicker.

Ant-Man and the Wasp may have the ability to get really small, but Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania goes really big.
This third film revolving around the characters (and the 31st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series, for those keeping count) represents a major departure from its two predecessors. While those were generally more lighthearted and relatively small-scaled as compared to the behemoth films featuring the other superheroes, this entry clearly aims higher, taking place almost entirely in the Quantum Realm and rivaling the Stars Wars films in their exotic world-building. Imagine the cantina scene from Star Wars on steroids and expanded to feature length, and you’ll have some idea of what director Peyton Reed and screenwriter Jeff Loveness are going for.
Mileage will vary in terms of fan reactions; personally, I enjoyed the previous comically inclined Ant-Man movies as refreshing palate cleansers from the overblown histrionics of the Avengers films.

Never count Sylvester Stallone out.
The 76-year-old actor, who rose to prominence in movies like “Rocky” and “First Blood,” has an uncanny knack for reinvention. And his latest career refresh begins today, with the release of “Samaritan,” a riff on the typical superhero story. The heat generated by his latest project will definitely continue into the near future – this fall he stars in Paramount+’s “Tulsa King,” from “Yellowstone” mastermind Taylor Sheridan; and he’s got “The Expendables 4” in the works, for release in the not-too-distant future. Everything’s coming up Sly!
But if you maybe haven’t heard of “Samaritan” or want to know more, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

Eleven Days in May tells the stories of the youngest victims of last year’s conflict with Israel. Its directors hope its simplicity will drive home the reality of war
Two and a half years ago, Michael Winterbottom began a sabbatical. He had been bruised by losing control of the final cut on Greed, his satire about a Philip-Green-alike, played by Steve Coogan. He felt the studio had sabotaged the film’s impact by neutering its message. Winterbottom wanted captions over the end credits, explaining how much real-life fashion tycoons are worth and how little they pay their workers. The head of Sony did not. The truth, it seems, could not be handled.
Winterbottom’s sabbatical did not last long, but his commitment to facts over fiction has only strengthened. First, he wrote a book, Dark Matter: Independent Filmmaking in the 21st Century. It featured conversations with fellow British film-makers...

Steve Coogan has spotlighted his and Sarah Solemani’s use of comedy to tackle the #MeToo debate in upcoming Channel 4 show Chivalry and talked openly about playing Jimmy Savile, stating: “Things are better talked about than not talked about.”
The Philomena and Lost King star told Deadline the aim with Chivalry, which comes from his BBC Studios-backed indie Baby Cow, was to make a show about “love and respect” that could make people laugh, while using humor to open up a wider debate.
Coogan and Solemani play the lead roles in Chivalry, having come up with the concept during the filming of Michael Winterbottom’s Greed when they found themselves debating the issues regularly and at length.
Also starring Sienna Miller, Wanda Sykes and Aisling Bea, the show features Coogan as Cameron, a successful film producer and “ladies man,” and Ridley Road creator Solemani as Bobby, a passionate indie-darling filmmaker.

BBC One has announced that Steve Coogan has joined the cast of “The Reckoning,” an upcoming drama miniseries about the dark legacy of Jimmy Savile, the English television personality known for hosting “Top of the Pops.”
Written by Neil McKay, “The Reckoning” will tell the story of Savile’s life from his childhood to after his death in 2011, when he was ultimately found to have abused more than 500 children.
People accused Savile of sexually assaulting children during his career, but Savile denied these allegations and they received little publicity. According to the BBC, the team behind the series is working closely with several of Savile’s victims.
Savile’s working class background, including teen years spent in working in coal mines, made him a galvanizing figure as he rose to fame. He became a DJ after sustaining a major spinal injury in the coal mines, first playing in dance halls,...

This article contains spoilers for Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed.
The trailer for Netflix documentary Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed doesn’t say much but still promises a lot.
Only a little over 30 second long, the teaser clip features creepy chimes, telltale black and white true crime imagery, and the provocative text: “We want to show you the trailer for Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed but we can’t. Find out why on August 25.”
Wow! Netflix, arguably the most powerful media entity on the planet, is so spooked at the raw truth of a Bob Ross documentary that it’s hesitant to even share it with the public. This is a streaming service that premiered Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness just last year. And in case you needed a reminder on that thing’s whole deal, that was a docuseries that began with someone...
