Todd Phillips’ ‘gritty’ take on the Clown Prince of Crime inspired the most complaints to the British Board of Film Classification in 2019, it’s been revealed. More people were moved to grumble about Warner Bros and DC’s solo Joker effort than any other cinema release last year, after it received arguably unwarranted media attention from folks who were concerned that it might inspire the world’s incels to do a quick domestic terrorism or two for the lols, among other things.
Altogether, the BBFC sustained 149 complaints from the public in 2019 about 70 different films, which might not seem like very many, and it isn’t – the organisation admits that it’s fewer than half the complaints they received in 2018.
Ultimately, twenty people wrote to them about Joker, complaining about its 15 rating. “Several stated that we should have classified the film 18 because of violence and the film’s tone. A small...

‘Black Christmas’ (Photo credit: Universal).
With Disney/Fox’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker invading cinemas this Thursday no distributor was brave – or foolish – enough to launch potentially lucrative titles last weekend.
So, no one could blame cinemagoers for ignoring the new releases which had flopped or under-performed in the Us or the UK, while Universal/Blumhouse’s horror movie Black Christmas was D.O.A here and globally.
Paramount’s family comedy Playing with Fire fared best among the newcomers, but that’s not saying a lot as the top 20 titles generated $10.4 million, down 16 per cent on the previous frame according to Numero.
The Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen II continued its reign, raking in nearly $3.7 million in its third weekend, propelling the total to $22.8 million. The sequel co-directed by the original’s Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee has amassed $1.03 billion worldwide, ranking as the seventh biggest animated release of all time.

James Marsh’s heist-caper “King of Thieves” reunites beloved British actors for a story that’s familiar yet still surprising. In a rat pack that includes Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent, Michael Gambon, Tom Courtenay and Ray Winstone, these mild-mannered gents play retired criminals who unite for one last tantalizing score: the chance to steal over £200 million in jewels and money.
Brian (Caine) is the reluctant leader of this grizzly pack, breaking his promise to his late wife to leave his notorious days behind him. But he knows a score too good to pass up, and when timid, but criminally minded whippersnapper Basil shows him a way into a high-security vault holding millions worth of goods, Brian rallies his troops for one last show. Basil ingratiates his way into their company as an expert in wiring and as the person who knows everything there is to know about their target.
Their crew is a motley one.

"In 2019, you're cordially invited to meet the biggest rascal of the Royal Family." Oy vey. Lionsgate UK has released the first teaser trailer for a cute animated comedy titled The Queen's Corgi, made by Belgian animation studio nWave Pictures and the same director who most recently made the animated film The Son of Bigfoot. nWave's The Queen's Corgi is indeed about (one of) the Queen's (many) corgis, a lovable little puppy named Rex. One day he loses track of his mistress and stumbles across a clan with dogs of all kinds confronting and fighting each other. During his epic journey to return to the queen, Rex falls in love and discovers his true self. The voice cast hasn't been revealed yet, only this teaser trailer and a few posters. As cute as this looks, I have a feeling it's going to be so bad. Most of the films made by nWave turn out terrible.
