The film was screened as a work-in-progress in the Moscow Film Festival in June 27th 2016. The final version, released worldwide by Netflix in August 6th 2020 is a completely different cut, almost 20 minutes shorter than the work in progress.
Both director Martin Sastre and producer Axel Kuschevatzky are of Russian descent.

The famous Russian children's literature character Cheburashka, created by Soviet writer Eduard Uspensky, appears through the film.
