On September 21, 2024, two women went blow-for-blow under the blazing lights of a boxing gym in Austin, Texas. Jabs. Hooks. Uppercuts. A handwritten sign that read “Death to Mainstream Cinema.” These are the Fantastic Fest Debates.
Ahbra Perry and Annick Mahnert are programmers for Alamo Drafthouse’s infamous genre film festival. For its 19th edition, they also participated as fighters in a controversial boxing ritual that has existed almost as long as the festival itself. Competitors select a subject for debate, and after three rounds of verbal back-and-forth, they put on gloves and duke it out — physically.
Over the years, big names like Michelle Rodriguez, Elijah Wood, Keanu Reeves, and Zoë Bell have participated in the theater chain’s gonzo exhibition. The celebration of disagreement lets actors, directors, critics, Fantastic Fest organizers, and more fans put their fists where their film opinions are. As America’s largest genre festival enters its second decade,...

The People’s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2024 Toronto Film Festival has gone to The Life of Chuck, first runner-up is Emilia Pérez, and second runner-up is Anora. The Documentary Award goes to The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, and the Midnight Madness winner is The Substance.
Both runners-up Emilia Pérez and Anora were big winners at Cannes in May (the latter taking the Palme d’Or), but Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck was a TIFF world premiere and a surprise winner of this award.
Tom Hiddleston stars in the film based on King’s novella about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz. It is an unusual winner here for this award as it currently is looking for distribution and has no set release date, which means it could be the first People’s Choice winner in recent memory...

Cameras are now rolling on director Luc Besson's new take on Dracula, with his DogMan star Caleb Landry Jones on board to play the legendary Transylvanian Count.
The movie is titled Dracula: A Love Tale, and is described as a “a big-budget reimagining” of the vampire's origin story.
Deadline has shared a first look at the movie, giving us a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Jones in his armor, presumably as a pre-vampire Prince Vlad "The Impaler" Tepes.
“It’s a totally romantic approach,” Besson says of his adaptation. “There’s a romantic side in Bram Stoker’s book that hasn’t been explored that much. It’s a love story about a man who waits for 400 years for the reincarnation of his wife. That’s the true heart of the story, waiting an eternity for the return of love.”

The Iron Man saga has had some of the most iconic villains throughout its run, one of which included the fan-favorite, Sam Rockwell. For one who played the ancillary villain, Justin Hammer, in the second installment of the film series, the then-40-year-old actor did an absolutely remarkable job at intimidating the audiences.
Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2
But as intimidating as he seemed in the 2010 film, Rockwell seems quite the opposite in a recent video that has been going viral on the internet. The video is basically a compilation of some of the now-55-year-old actor’s more goofy moments, which has led to one sudden epiphany hitting fans: Rockwell would have been the perfect Deadpool of the ’90s!
Iron Man 2‘s old clip going viral highlights his goofy side
It is an unarguable fact that Sam Rockwell can nail just any role as efficiently as ever.

The Academy Award, popularly known as the Oscars, is the most prestigious award that someone from within the film fraternity can win. It is every actor’s dream to etch their name in the annals of film history, a recognition of their mastery over the art form that takes a significant amount of time to refine. Over the years, several actors have won the award, thus setting themselves apart from the rest. In this article, we will take a look at five such actors whose Oscar records will not be broken anytime soon.
The film industry has seen the rise and fall of actors. While not everyone can make it big, those who have managed to do so have left their mark forever.
It is worth noting that an Oscar alone does not determine one’s talent, as it is merely a reward for the work that they put in.

‘Oppenheimer’ director Christopher Nolan finally won a BAFTA trophy, two as a matter of fact, on Sunday, breaking what some admirers had lovingly described as a “curse”, writes The Hollywood Reporter (THR).
The director, one of the most prolific and best-known British film exports, had previously lost out on picking up a BAFTA trophy.
Nolan, notes THR, had received three nominations for his 2010 hit ‘Inception’, but the movie lost out to ‘The King’s Speech’ in the best film race. David Fincher earned the best director honour for ‘The Social Network’ and David Seidler won the best original screenplay BAFTA for ‘The King’s Speech’.
In 2018, Nolan was also in the running for the best picture and director awards from the British Academy for his 2017 film ‘Dunkirk’. In that case, ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ was honoured as the best film, and Guillermo del Toro walked away with the director trophy for...

Caleb Landry Jones hasn’t been quite so present onscreen since the heyday-of-sorts that was Get Out, Twin Peaks, Three Billboards, and The Florida Project in one year. Since then, though, he’s arguably grown more compelling. Amidst a Best Actor win for Nitram at Cannes in 2021, making evident his position as one of America’s more fascinating thespian exports, he’s embarked on a wildly ambitious and satisfying music career: 2020’s The Mother Stone, 2021’s Gadzooks Vol. 1, and 2022’s Gadzooks Vol. 2 are full-bodied psychedelic-rock experiments that put just about every actor’s vanity project to shame. As our interview in 2021 made clear, he wants to make sounds that are simply not on any prominent musician’s mind.

Sam Rockwell probably isn’t anyone’s idea of a suave secret agent, but that seems to be just the point for director Matthew Vaughn. He cast the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Oscar winner against type and let him rip with a witty, eminently watchable performance that lets him steal every scene he is in.
If only the movie, Argylle, were a star vehicle for him in the same way that, say, Hitchcock’s North by Northwest was for Cary Grant in its day, this pseudo spy thriller might have been a classic. But unfortunately too much of it, especially the final half hour of this two-hour-plus frenetic action picture, just throws it all against the wall to see what sticks. It will have your head spinning trying to keep up with a far-too-busy set of characters playing mind games with us in a twisted scenario that spins out...

It’s the surprise Oscars snub that many of us saw coming. Greta Gerwig missed out on a Best Director nomination for “Barbie,” even as the film scored an impressive eight nominations: picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), supporting actress (America Ferrera), costume design, song (“I’m Just Ken”), song (“What Was I Made For”) and production design.
So how did Gerwig stumble? Let’s look at the five most likely reasons.
1. “Barbie” had absolutely zero snob appeal.
The Directors Branch of the academy is notoriously highbrow, and its members like to salute what they are feel are genuine, original and unique achievements in the field of film directing. They don’t care about celebrity status or box office. Gerwig was previously cited by the branch for 2017’s “Lady Bird.” She beat out the likes of Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and Steven Spielberg for “The Post.
So how did Gerwig stumble? Let’s look at the five most likely reasons.
1. “Barbie” had absolutely zero snob appeal.

Jacob Elordi first came to fam in the 2018 Netflix hit, “The Kissing Booth.” The immense success of the teen romcom spawned two sequels which both achieved #1 on the platform. He followed that up with a role on the HBO Emmy-winning drama “Euphoria.” His sinisterly intoxicating turn as Nate Jacobs left audiences in a steamy conflict between body and mind.
He has supporting roles in two red-hot Oscar contenders this year: “Saltburn” and “Priscilla.” In the former, he plays the object of Barry Keoghan’s character. In the later, he takes on the iconic role of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Emma Stone is odds on to become the fourth two-time Best Actress winner at the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards thanks to her starring role in Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things.” Stone, who first won the award in 2017 for “La La Land,” would join Frances McDormand, Renée Zellweger (“Chicago” in 2003 and “Judy” in 2020), and Viola Davis (“The Help” in 2012 and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021).
However, that is not the only SAG record she could match. She could also become the second person to win Best Ensemble three separate times. Michael Keaton won this award for “Birdman” (2015), “Spotlight” (2016), and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (2021). Stone shared in that first win with Keaton (she played his daughter) and was also part of “The Help” ensemble.
Among the other two-time Best Ensemble winners: Ben Affleck (“Shakespeare in Love” in 1999 and “Argo” in 2013), Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush (both “Shakespeare in Love” and “The King’s Speech...

Greta Gerwig could be in line for a hattrick of Oscar nominations this year for Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay for her marvelous work on Warner Bros.’s “Barbie.” The multi-hyphenate co-wrote the movie with her partner, Noah Baumbach, while she brought to life the world of Barbie as a visionary helmer of one of the biggest films of the year. She has reaped three Oscar bids to date for two of her previous pictures. Let’s take a closer look at those races.
Her first bids came in 2018 for “Lady Bird,” which tells the story of a 17-year-old girl who comes of age in Sacramento, California, in 2002. Saoirse Ronan stars in the lead role while Timothée Chalamet, Lucas Hedges, and Laurie Metcalf also featured. “Lady Bird” was a critical darling, which meant that Gerwig enjoyed a good time at the Critics Choice Awards, securing nominations for both Original Screenplay and Director.

“Barbie” is making some strong headway early on in this awards season. The Warner Bros. movie set an all-time record at the Critics Choice Awards as it picked up 18 nominations while it also landed a whopping nine bids from the Golden Globes. At both awards groups, Greta Gerwig was nominated for Best Director, Margot Robbie for Best Actress, Ryan Gosling for Supporting Actor, and the film for Best Picture. Meanwhile, America Ferrera landed a Supporting Actress bid at the Critics Choice.
This early abundance of love means “Barbie” is potentially becoming the leader of the pack in terms of awards season frontrunner. And the SAG Awards could be next. Currently, we are predicting that “Barbie” will secure bids for Best Ensemble, Best Actress for Robbie, and Best Supporting Actor for Gosling. “Oppenheimer” is predicted to win Best Ensemble but “Barbie” could sneak ahead for several reasons.

For decades, it wasn't unusual to see two thespians from the same film nominated for Best Supporting Actress, but the same couldn't be said about its brother category. That was until recently when double-dipping in Supporting Actor became fashionable.
It started in 2017, with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri's Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson. In 2019, it was Joe Pesci and Al Pacino for The Irishman, and then Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeit Stanfield for Judas and the Black Messiah in 2020. The following year, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee did the honors for The Power of the Dog, while, in 2022, The Banshees of Inisherin got in with Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan. For comparison, in the same period, Supporting Actress only had two such cases, with The Favourite and last year's Everything Everywhere All At Once. Now, the question is whether the trend will continue at the 96th Academy Awards…...

Germany’s Zdf Studios has secured worldwide distribution rights for documentary series “Hitler’s Power” (3 x 50’), an exploration of how and why Hitler rose to power and the terrible events that followed.
On Jan. 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. The series examines why the Nazi leader was confident of the approval of most Germans, even when the war was clearly lost, and what led Germans to support the Holocaust.

"You followed him? He could've killed you!" Vertical has revealed an official trailer for a dark crime thriller titled The Good Mother, from director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte. Despite the two big names leading this cast, it's doesn't seem to be getting the most hyped up release next month. The film follows a journalist who, after the murder of her estranged son, forms an unlikely alliance with his pregnant girlfriend to track down those responsible for his death. Together, they confront a world of drugs and corruption in the seedy underbelly of a small city in upstate New York. Hilary Swank stars as Marissa, the vengeful journalist, with Olivia Cooke as Paige, plus Dilone, Hopper Penn, Norm Lewis, Karen Aldridge, and Jack Reynor. This reminds me of McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, about a mom turning vicious to get revenge on whoever killed her child. Looks extra dark. "Don't I get...

The summer’s most anticipated comedy is Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. After her two box office misfires of 2022 — “Amsterdam” and “Babylon” — Robbie is on the cusp of her first critical darling and giant financial hit in a long while. Two of her acclaimed performances brought her Academy Award nominations in the previous decade, so with “Barbie” opening in theaters, let’s look back at Robbie’s two Oscar races.
Her first Oscar nomination came in 2018 in the Best Actress category for her performance as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” Written by Steven Rogers and directed by Craig Gillespie, the film tells the true-life story of Harding’s rise in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and how everything came crashing down. If critical admiration were tracked like baseball stats, writer/director Martin McDonagh would easily be an All-Star. Since 2008, he may only have made a quartet of feature films, but in the film world, he has gone four for four in earning critical acclaim. After winning an Academy Award in 2004 for “Six Shooter,” his first live action short film (which starred Brendan Gleeson in the beginning of a beautiful partnership), McDonagh went on to write and direct four contemporary classics: “In Bruges” (2008), “Seven Psychopaths” (2012), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022).
In addition to his film success, McDonagh (in his spare time) is one of the most prominent playwrights of his generation, with acclaimed productions both on Broadway and in London’s West End. The success of his plays, many of which are set in the small towns and villages of Ireland, have been much-awarded on both sides of the pond,...

Since the Oscars have adopted the preferential ballot, voters have been spreading the wealth. A Best Picture champ hasn’t taken home more than four awards in 11 years. Sometimes they might carry an acting award with the top prize, but definitely not two. But that might all change on Sunday. With “Everything Everywhere All at Once” poised for a big sweep, it could be the first Best Picture winner in the expanded era and the first in 18 years to win more than one acting award.
In the 13 years with the preferential ballot, there have been seven Best Picture winners that also nabbed an acting trophy. They are 2010’s “The King’s Speech”, 2011’s “The Artist”, 2013’s “12 Years a Slave”, 2016’s “Moonlight”, 2018’s “Green Book”, 2020’s “Nomadland” and 2021’s “Coda”.
The six Best Picture winners that were blanked in acting are “The Hurt Locker” (2009), “Argo” (2012), “Birdman” (2014), “Spotlight” (2015), “The Shape of Water...
