A year and a half ago, Netflix announced they had given a series order to The Boroughs, a supernatural mystery show that’s executive produced by Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers. A couple of months ago, they revealed an impressive cast had been assembled: Alfred Molina (Spider-Man: No Way Home) plays Sam, Geena Davis (Blink Twice) plays Renee, Alfre Woodard (Salem’s Lot) plays Judy, Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story) plays Wally, Clarke Peters plays Art, and Bill Pullman (Independence Day) plays Jack. Now, the names of more cast members have been revealed. Variety reports that the previously announced actors have been joined by Dee Wallace (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial), Ed Begley Jr. (Better Call Saul), Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle), Rafael Casal (Loki), Eric Edelstein (Twin Peaks: The Return), and Mousa Hussein Kraish (American Gods).

Abbie Cornish filmed scenes as the late model Anna Nicole Smith at the West Hollywood LGBTQ Pride Parade in West Hollywood, California, on Sunday for her new film Trust Me, I’m a Doctor.

The 41-year-old Australian native was pictured with costar Kal Penn, 47, during the festive proceedings, recreating a past outing Smith had at a June 12, 2005, Pride Parade.

Pic is based on the memoir of Dr. Sandeep Kapoor (Penn), whose life is turned upside down when he is implicated in the death of his former patient — model, actress, and reality TV star, Anna Nicole Smith. The film takes place at the height of early 2000s tabloid culture and explores the intersection of fame, privacy, self-discovery and politics through the perspective of a man who wound up forced into the spotlight through the court of public opinion.

‘Oppenheimer’ director Christopher Nolan finally won a BAFTA trophy, two as a matter of fact, on Sunday, breaking what some admirers had lovingly described as a “curse”, writes The Hollywood Reporter (THR).

If only the movie, Argylle, were a star vehicle for him in the same way that, say, Hitchcock’s North by Northwest was for Cary Grant in its day, this pseudo spy thriller might have been a classic. But unfortunately too much of it, especially the final half hour of this two-hour-plus frenetic action picture, just throws it all against the wall to see what sticks. It will have your head spinning trying to keep up with a far-too-busy set of characters playing mind games with us in a twisted scenario that spins out...

It’s the surprise Oscars snub that many of us saw coming. Greta Gerwig missed out on a Best Director nomination for “Barbie,” even as the film scored an impressive eight nominations: picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), supporting actress (America Ferrera), costume design, song (“I’m Just Ken”), song (“What Was I Made For”) and production design.

So how did Gerwig stumble? Let’s look at the five most likely reasons.

1. “Barbie” had absolutely zero snob appeal.

The Directors Branch of the academy is notoriously highbrow, and its members like to salute what they are feel are genuine, original and unique achievements in the field of film directing. They don’t care about celebrity status or box office. Gerwig was previously cited by the branch for 2017’s “Lady Bird.” She beat out the likes of Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and Steven Spielberg for “The Post.

Jacob Elordi first came to fam in the 2018 Netflix hit, “The Kissing Booth.” The immense success of the teen romcom spawned two sequels which both achieved #1 on the platform. He followed that up with a role on the HBO Emmy-winning drama “Euphoria.” His sinisterly intoxicating turn as Nate Jacobs left audiences in a steamy conflict between body and mind.

He has supporting roles in two red-hot Oscar contenders this year: “Saltburn” and “Priscilla.” In the former, he plays the object of Barry Keoghan’s character. In the later, he takes on the iconic role of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Sofia Coppola’s film focuses on the marriage between Presley and his teen bride, Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny).

Emma Stone is odds on to become the fourth two-time Best Actress winner at the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards thanks to her starring role in Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things.” Stone, who first won the award in 2017 for “La La Land,” would join Frances McDormand, Renée Zellweger (“Chicago” in 2003 and “Judy” in 2020), and Viola Davis (“The Help” in 2012 and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021).

She has reaped three Oscar bids to date for two of her previous pictures. Let’s take a closer look at those races.

Her first bids came in 2018 for “Lady Bird,” which tells the story of a 17-year-old girl who comes of age in Sacramento, California, in 2002. “Barbie” is making some strong headway early on in this awards season. The Warner Bros. movie set an all-time record at the Critics Choice Awards as it picked up 18 nominations while it also landed a whopping nine bids from the Golden Globes. For decades, it wasn't unusual to see two thespians from the same film nominated for Best Supporting Actress, but the same couldn't be said about its brother category. That was until recently when double-dipping in Supporting Actor became fashionable.

It started in 2017, with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri's Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson. In 2019, it was Joe Pesci and Al Pacino for The Irishman, and then Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeit Stanfield for Judas and the Black Messiah in 2020. The following year, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee did the honors for The Power of the Dog, while, in 2022, The Banshees of Inisherin got in with Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan. Sony Pictures Classics has acquired rights in North America and China to mystery-comedy Wicked Little Letters from Studiocanal, for a 2024 theatrical release.

The film is directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) from a screenplay by Jonny Sweet (Greed). Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley co-star in the period comedy-drama which world premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

Additional cast include Anjana Vasan, Timothy Spall, Hugh Skinner, Malachi Kirby, Gemma Jones), Lolly Adefope), Eileen Atkins and Alisha Weir.

The deal was negotiated between SPC and Studiocanal, which financed the film with Film4. Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 Films previously acquired additional international rights.

The film is produced by Blueprint Pictures alongside South of The River Pictures and Jo Wallett.

Delivering some late deal-making momentum to the American Film Market, Sony Pictures Classics snatched up North America and China distribution rights to the British black comedy mystery film Wicked Little Letters, starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.

Sony acquired the rights from StudioCanal and will release the film theatrically in 2024.

Directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) from a screenplay by Jonny Sweet (Greed), Wicked Little Letters is based on a true scandal that stunned 1920s England. The story centers on neighbors Edith Swan (Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Buckley) in the seaside town of Littlehampton. One day, a series of obscene letters begin to target Edith and others, and when suspicion falls on Rose, the women of the town suspect something is amiss and decide to investigate.

Exclusive: Here’s your first trailer for Liam Neeson crime-thriller In The Land Of Saints And Sinners, which debuts tomorrow at the Venice Film Festival.

Shot in County Donegal, Ireland, Taken and Schindler’s List star Neeson features with fellow Oscar nominees Ciarán Hinds (Belfast) and Kerry Condon. Also among cast are Colm Meaney (The Banker) and Jack Gleeson (Game Of Thrones).

The film, which reunites Neeson with The Marksman director Robert Lorenz, is set in a remote Irish village, where a newly retired assassin finds himself drawn into a lethal game of cat and mouse with a trio of vengeful terrorists. Screenplay was written by Mark Michael McNally and Terry Loane.

Luc Besson let the dogs out in Venice Thursday night, premiering his potential comeback vehicle, Dogman. Besson and the cast were showered with howls of approval from the audience.

The cast, including lead Caleb Landry Jones, Jojo T Gibbs and Clemens Schick, were visibly moved by the response to the film, with the audience rising to their feet for a good six minutes. Jones stood up, undid his braid and shook his hair out, before taking off his bow tie, looking relieved. Besson embraced his cast before returning to his seat, wiping away tears.

On Jan. 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. The series examines why the Nazi leader was confident of the approval of most Germans, even when the war was clearly lost, and what led Germans to support the Holocaust.

Set during the 1984 Olympic Games in L.A. and loosely based on a true story, the coming-of-age thriller is set against the backdrop of the punk and skate worlds of West Los Angeles. As the new friendship of two teenage girls from different walks of life unfolds and city officials focus on the Olympics, the lives of two former detectives (Harrelson and Wilson) become intertwined when one of the girls goes missing.

Universal’s upcoming monster thriller, directed by “Scream” and “Scream VI” filmmakers Radio Silence, has added to its buzzy cast, with Kathryn Newton, Angus Cloud and Will Catlett signing on for the film.

The trio join “Scream VI” star Melissa Barrera, Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens and Kevin Durand in the yet-to-be-titled movie, which is set for release on April 19, 2024.

Hot off the success of their “Scream” films, which reinvigorated the franchise and set box office records, Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct the project from a script by Stephen Sheilds, with revisions by Guy Busick. Exclusive: Jack Huston (House of Gucci) and Abbie Cornish (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) have been cast in upcoming drama, I’m Beginning To See The Light.

The film will mark Russian filmmaker Konstantin Khudyakov’s (The Road To Calvary) first English-language feature.

The film will follow Ezra (Huston), a grief-stricken jazz trumpeter who seeks purpose and salvation after the sudden, tragic death of his wife and daughter. When he is mistaken for the new lighthouse keeper, Ezra meets Hannah (Cornish), a local school teacher who, along with ethereal music, reignites his passion for life and imbues it with meaning.

Veteran Khudyakov has worked in the business since the early 1960’s, starting out as an actor before turning to directing. He has directed more than 20 films and a number of TV series, including 2017 period miniseries The Road To Calvary, which scored multiple awards in Russia, and was picked up by Netflix.

If critical admiration were tracked like baseball stats, writer/director Martin McDonagh would easily be an All-Star. Since 2008, he may only have made a quartet of feature films, but in the film world, he has gone four for four in earning critical acclaim. True Detective co-stars and off-screen friends Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are confirmed to star in an untitled comedy greenlit at Apple TV+. McConaughey and Harrelson will also executive produce the series along with the show’s creator, Emmy Award winner David West Read (Schitt’s Creek).

The brief synopsis released by Apple TV+ describes the 10-episode half-hour comedy as “a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Matthew and Woody’s friendship is tested when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas.”

Additional executive producers include Bill Bost, Jeremy Plager, and Skydance Television’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell. Skydance Television’s producing the series for Apple TV+.

Since the Oscars have adopted the preferential ballot, voters have been spreading the wealth. A Best Picture champ hasn’t taken home more than four awards in 11 years. Sometimes they might carry an acting award with the top prize, but definitely not two. But that might all change on Sunday. With “Everything Everywhere All at Once” poised for a big sweep, it could be the first Best Picture winner in the expanded era and the first in 18 years to win more than one acting award.
