Born at a Buddhism temple in Okayama, Japan. He learned sociology at Kyoto University and started his career as a documentary director with NHK Japan. He went on to become a drama writer and director and has helmed many works, including the Prix Italia winning drama "Goldfish", "Made in Japan", the national popular long series "Hiyokko", "Unsolved Cases: Devil's Bargain". He was chosen as one of the most prominent up-and-coming directors in 2009. His theatrical feature debut, "Second Virginity," was released in 2011 to national acclaim. His film "Gift of Fire" depicted the secret history how young Japanese scientists tried to build an Atomic bomb during World War 2, which was shown worldwide in 2020, and his script received the Special Mention Award at the Sundance Institute.
