Arkus is a writer-director presently based in Cape Town, South Africa. He was born and raised in South Africa, and has a diverse cultural background that deeply influences his work. Arkus completed his filmmaking journey at ETIC - Technical School of Image & Communication, Portugal, in 2000, where he honed his skills in various aspects of visual storytelling. His passion for film led him to work in various industries, including advertising, radio, and television, from 2001 to 2006, where he gained extensive experience in different forms of media production. During this period, he worked with prominent brands and developed a deep understanding of the media landscape.
In 2007, Arkus transitioned to working for UN development programs, where he found his true calling in creating educational films aimed at rural development. These films address critical social issues, such as health, education, and community empowerment, and have been instrumental in spreading knowledge and raising awareness in underserved areas. His work in this field has been recognized for its impact and effectiveness.
In addition to his work in film, Arkus continues to pursue his passion as an independent filmmaker, exploring various genres and storytelling techniques. His diverse experiences and background continue to shape his unique approach to filmmaking.
Project 1: "Silent Echoes" - UN project Silent Echoes is a poignant drama by Arkus that delves into the lives of women in a remote village struggling with generational silence. The project was awarded the Crescent Filmmakers Grant, which provided crucial funding for its development and production. The film went on to win the Golden Leaf Award for Best Dramatic Short at the Veritas Film Festival in 2019 and received an honorable mention at the International Narratives Showcase.
Project 2: "Forgotten Whispers" - UN project Forgotten Whispers is a documentary that highlights the overlooked environmental challenges faced by small coastal communities. Arkus received the Global Green Filmmaking Grant to bring this urgent story to life. The film earned the Emerald Globe Award for Best Environmental Documentary at the Horizon Earth Film Festival in 2020 and also took home the Silent Wave Prize for Excellence in Documentary Filmmaking at the Blue Planet Film Expo.
Project 3: "Fading Footsteps" - UN project Fading Footsteps is an experimental short film by Arkus, exploring the concept of memory through abstract visual storytelling. The project was supported by the Visionary Creators Fund, which offered a grant specifically for innovative and boundary-pushing projects. Fading Footsteps won the Celestial Ribbon Award for Best Experimental Film at the Lumina Arts Festival in 2021 and was a recipient of the Avant-Garde Filmmaker Award at the New Wave Cinema Forum.
