On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A “Josie and the Pussycats”-Type Spinoff for “The L Word” Crowd
More than a decade ago, “D.E.B.S.” filmmaker Angela Robinson gifted garage band lesbians everywhere “Girltrash: All Night Long.” Too bad most of that delusional target demographic seems to have been too busy obsessing over their ex-girlfriends — and/or future Band Slam prospects — to properly champion this underrated gem from a pioneering voice in queer film. Oh, well! You know what they say: If you want a movie loved right, then you have to throw your own bra at it.

Matthew Wilkas (Top Five) is set for a recurring role on Aj and the Queen, Netflix’s upcoming comedy series starring RuPaul Charles, from Charles, 2 Broke Girls co-creator and former Sex and the City showrunner Michael Patrick King and Warner Bros. TV. Written by King and Charles, the series stars RuPaul as Ruby Red, a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990s Rv with her unlikely sidekick Aj (Izzy G), a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 9-year-old stowaway. Wilkas will play Officer Patrick Kennedy, a macho, gay police officer who is charming, easy going, and comfortable in his own skin. When "Saturday Night Live" returns for a new episode on Jan. 18 with Drake as host and musical guest, get ready to see a new face: Sasheer Zamata has joined the cast, Deadline reports.
Zamata trained at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York, and will be the first black female "Saturday Night Live" cast member since Maya Rudolph. In fact, the lack of female black cast members on the NBC sketch show prompted many to criticize the show's lack of diversity, especially when all six new cast members added this season were white. That kick-started a talent search by executive producer Lorne Michaels to add an African-American woman to the cast.
Zamata won the jackpot and will now be a featured player on the show. She beat out fellow finalists Tanisha Long ("Girl Code"), Gabrielle Denis ("The Game"), Bresha Webb, Misty Monroe, Natasha Rothwell, Amber Ruffin, Leslie Jones and Briana Kc.

It’s official: Come January, SNL will be adding a black woman to its cast. (And possibly two, though Lorne Michaels is reportedly wary of having too many broads on set. Sigh.)
That woman could be one of the 11 comedians who apparently auditioned for SNL in a special showcase at L.A.’s Groundlings Theater. Comedian Simone Shepherd tagged them all in an Instagram photo that has since been taken down — and after looking into each one, it’s safe to say that there’s a lot of talent here. So much for black women not being ready for the Not Ready for Primetime Players.

All it took was prolonged Internet rage for "Saturday Night Live" to actively seek out black female performers for the cast. When it was announced that six new cast members would join the current season, all of whom are white, many took the show to task for its lack of diversity. "SNL" cast member Kenan Thompson claimed the problem was a lack of talent more than anything else.
In response to the criticism, the show held auditions for African-American women on the east and west coasts in early December. Executive producer Lorne Michaels tells the New York Times that as many as two people will be considered to join the show after a final audition of seven to eight candidates on the "SNL" stage.
The finalists who audition on the "SNL" stage have all been asked to prepare an impersonation of Michelle Obama as part of their act, though...
