The Denver Film Festival has announced the winners of its annual Audience Awards and Festival Juried Awards, with films like “Bob Trevino Likes It” and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” taking top prizes.

Following the conclusion of the 47th edition of the festival, which ran from November 1 to November 10, Denver Film Festival artistic director Matthew Campbell said via statement, “This year’s Denver Film Festival brought us fantastic films, phenomenal guests, and unforgettable experiences. The films recognized this year tell strong stories through powerful perspectives, providing viewers with the chance to see themselves on the screen while also seeing something completely new. We are honored to recognize so many voices, both new and familiar, and to bring those stories to audiences right here in Denver.”

It is worth noting that, outside of the audience favorite short film “Jellyfish and Lobster,” the audience award winners were not eligible for juried prizes.

Daisy Edgar-Jones starrer “Where the Crawdads Sing” is set to get a theatrical release in China, Sony Pictures revealed today.

The film, which is based on the coming-of-age novel by Delia Owens, will hit Chinese theaters on Nov. 25.

It was released in the U.S. in July, where it made 2.3 million in Thursday previews. According to Sony, the film has generated 140.2 million worldwide, of which 50 million came from international markets.

“Where the Crawdads Sing” stars Edgar-Jones as Kya, who raises herself in the marshlands of North Carolina after being abandoned by her family. Isolated and viewed with suspicion by prejudiced locals, Kya keeps to herself until she one day befriends two young men. But when one of them unexpectedly dies, she becomes the center of suspicion.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is glad that NBC passed on a TV series based on her 1999 film “Cruel Intentions.”

The actress discussed the reboot during a recent interview with The New York Times. The pilot was ordered in February 2016, but the network had passed on the series by October of the same year. Gellar would have reprised her iconic role as the manipulative Kathryn Merteuil.

But, ultimately, she agreed that the series wasn’t a fit for network television.

“Nothing against NBC, but ‘Cruel Intentions’ is straight streaming,” she said. “On the first day, I was like, ‘This isn’t working.’ It’s just not a network show. And if it is a network show, it’s not my ‘Cruel Intentions.’ So, I was actually grateful.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was set to return as Kathryn Merteuil for the first time since 1999, is speaking out about the project.

In a new interview with The New York Times, Gellar said that she was grateful the network killed the project before it got to see the light of day.

“I don’t know. That was a whole crazy time,” she said of the failed project.

“Nothing against NBC, but Cruel Intentions is straight streaming," Gellar elaborated.

"On the first day, I was like, ‘This isn’t working.’ It’s just not a network show. And if it is a network show, it’s not my Cruel Intentions. So, I was actually grateful," Gellar revealed.

“Where the Crawdads Sing” has gathered quite a list of names associated with the film adaptation of Delia Owens’ bestselling novel, which was published in 2018. Reese Witherspoon spotlighted the book as one of the earliest picks in her book club, and then her production company Hello Sunshine signed on to adapt the book for the big screen through Lucy Alibar’s screenplay.

Directed by Olivia Newman, the story weaves together several complex themes, including coming of age, survival and a murder mystery. Taylor Swift even wrote a song for the film after reading Owens’ novel because she was so inspired by the story: “Carolina,” which released June 23, echoes Owens’ naturalistic writing with a haunting melody.

In an encouraging sign for specialized product, Sony/3000 Pictures/Hello Sunshine’s Where the Crawdads Sing has crossed the 100M benchmark globally. Getting there on Tuesday, the feature adaptation of the Delia Owens novel sits at 78.8M domestic and 21.5M from the international box office.

Crawdads initially released domestically in mid-July with 17M; a good win for a 24M production before P&a, and ahead of other female-skewing novels on screen pre-pandemic. It also charmed audiences at 96 on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a critical score of 34.

The Daisy Edgar-Jones led movie is directed by Olivia Newman (First Match) from a screenplay by Lucy Alibar (Beasts Of The Southern Wild).

It’s on a staggered offshore release, still with Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Korea and Japan to come.

To date, the top overseas markets are the UK (8.6M), Australia (6.7M), Germany (1.3M), New Zealand (1M) and France (821K).

With Sony’s film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing, writer Lucy Alibar and director Olivia Newman faced the challenge of turning Delia Owens’ nearly 400-page best-selling novel into a two-hour movie that would connect with audiences.

While reviews have been poor (Where the Crawdads Sing currently has 34 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the film opened to 17 million at the domestic box office and more than doubled that domestically a week later.

The film, like the book, tells a coming-of-age story about an abandoned girl growing up in the North Carolina marsh as she learns to fend for herself and experiences love and heartbreak. Sony thriller Where The Crawdads Sing receives the biggest-ever release for any film directed by a woman at the UK-Ireland box office this weekend, opening in 691 locations.

Given the immense popularity of the novel, there’s been a lot of hype and expectations concerning the adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing, which is finally upon us. To mark the film’s cinema release this weekend, we had the pleasure in speaking to the talented cast, such as leading star Daisy Edgar-Jones, as well as Taylor John Smith, Sterling Macer, Jr. and Michael Hyatt. To tell you the truth, it’s a wonder that this movie even exists in the first place.

Film adaptations of books like this don’t come around too often.

Disney’s “Thor: Love And Thunder” topped the U.K. and Ireland box office for the second consecutive weekend with £4.06 million (4.8 million), according to numbers released by Comscore. The latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now has a total of £20.8 million.

Universal’s “Minions: The Rise Of Gru” had another strong showing with £2.66 million in second place and has a total of £23.1 million after three weekends. In third position, Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” collected £1 million for a total of £16.1 million after four weekends.

Placing fourth was Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick.” Already the highest grossing film of the year in the territory, the Tom Cruise vehicle took a further £810,638 in its eighth weekend for a mighty total of £72.2 million.

Rounding off the top five was Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion,” which collected £383,502 in its sixth weekend for a total of £32.4 million.

Taylor John Smith made his big-screen debut with 2012's "The Hunger Games," and since then, he's garnered a dozen acting credits with his astonishing performances. From HBO's hit psychological thriller "Sharp Objects" and the war-action movie "The Outpost" to his latest appearance as Kya's love interest, Tate Walker, in the Reese Witherspoon-produced "Where the Crawdads Sing," the 27-year-old actor has a knack for breathing life into characters that originally graced the pages of novels. Despite being under the spotlight for a decade, Smith's romantic history remains shrouded in mystery for the most part. “Well yeah, I read and reread and reread and reread and reread that book,” Edgar-Jones told TheWrap following Smith’s comment. “It’s such a beautiful book and it’s so popular and loved by so many for a reason.”

But what fans didn’t know was Swift wrote the song before production on the film had even begun.

The novel, written by Delia Owens, tells the story of a young girl named Kya who lives on her own undisturbed out in a marsh, until she becomes a suspect in a potential murder.

Swift wrote “Carolina” specifically for the new film, with momentum from her “folklore” album production, asking Aaron Dessner to produce it.
