DC Comics is rebooting its superheroes into new "Absolute" incarnations. In the vein of Marvel's "Ultimate" comics, "Absolute DC" takes the company's biggest superheroes, twists them without compromising them, and puts them all in a new setting.
The initiative kicked off with "Absolute Batman" by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta. Two weeks later came "Absolute Wonder Woman" by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman, then two weeks after that was "Absolute Superman" by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval. Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter all have "Absolute" books on the docket, but for now, it's just the DC Trinity.
DC publishing the "Absolute" line as Marvel publishes the "Ultimate" universe makes this an exciting time for superhero comics. There's a rare feeling of possibility at the big two superhero publishers. Instead of simply starting over at the basics from day one,...

Comic fans know Scott Snyder best for his work at DC Comics — especially on Batman. However, Snyder also kept up a prolific pace with creator-owned comics. Since 2022, he's been writing several digital-first comic mini-series, which are first distributed through the Amazon digital reading service Comixology, and then published in print by Dark Horse.
One of these is the cyberpunk comic "Clear," drawn by Francis Manapul and first released in 2023. The comic is set in 2052, but it's really about the world we have now. In this future, we haven't solved any of the problems that plague our world; global warming, mass inequality, population displacement, etc. How do people go on living? With "Veils," or brain implants that let you see the world how you want to.
Do you want to live in an old west adventure? A sword and sorcery fantasy?...

Theo Rossi's Dr. Julian Rush is one of The Penguin's most intriguing supporting characters; he's also a complete creep and someone with a weird, unhealthy infatuation with his former - and now current - patient, Sofia Falcone.
Rush was created for this series and, contrary to online theories, wasn't ultimately revealed as Dr. Hugo Strange. However, new evidence has surfaced which suggests he was either meant to be Dr. Jonathan Crane or at least someone with close ties to Scarecrow.
As you can see below, episode 4 - "Cent'Anni" - features both Scarecrow's mask and his syringe glove on two stands. That wasn't there in the second episode, and as the eagle-eyed Redditor who spotted this points out, Sofia barges into his office in episode 4 unannounced (suggesting Julian didn't have time to hide them).

The credits have rolled on Lauren LeFranc’s The Penguin, and after eight episodes of murder, mobsters, and ‘ma,’ Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) has waddled his way to the top of Gotham City’s slippery crime ladder. Although The Penguin was always tipped to be a one-and-done miniseries, there’s already talk of a potential season 2. While LeFranc, Farrell, and The Batman director Matt Reeves mull over the idea, at least fans know Cobb is locked in to appear in The Batman: Part II, which will come out in theaters in 2026.
As a sequel to 2022’s The Batman, Part II will pick up directly after the events of The Penguin and make the most of the show’s winter setting. With this, there’s been obvious talk about Mr. Freeze stepping up as the movie’s big bad, with Reeves having previously said he’d be interested in a "grounded" version of the character.

The second issue of Absolute Batman went on sale today and the series continues to redefine the Caped Crusader.
It opens with a young Bruce Wayne being enveloped by bats moments after his father was gunned down. In the present, Batman is waging war on Black Mask's twisted Party Animals and continues to use near-lethal methods to take down his foes.
That includes breaking an aquarium tank and using a chemically concentrated version of vinegar to turn the water into hydrochloric acid, burning off the skin and feet of the villains.
Alfred Pennyworth observes all of this and figures out that his bases - or "caves" - beneath Gotham make the shape of a bat. His employers force him to remove the protection placed on Batman, but not to be fooled, he sets a trap for them...that's appropriately bat-themed.
Alfred also learns that Bruce Wayne has visited his father's killer,...

The dream of every geek, comic book, and superhero movie fan is pretty much to have a collection of items straight out of fiction. And with Batman, that’s no different. The thing is, Bruce Wayne owns some pretty over-the-top stuff in his universe, and those fans who really value exclusive and authentic items might find it a bit tough on the wallet.

A great example of this is the Batmobile, which has just gone on sale, costing practically what only Batman himself could afford. The surprise came with the car’s incredible attention to detail, as well as how true it stays to the hero’s iconic ride. However, even though it’s a relic, there are limits — showing it off in public is one of them.

Horror is one of the many genres that audiences love to digest. It's particularly prominent in cinema and on television, with horror movies and TV shows enjoying a lot of success over the past few decades. In fact, I recently put together a list recommending some horror movies and TV shows based on comic books.
But there are also plenty of horror comic books, too. With that in mind, I'd now like to focus on the comics that inspired many of the movies and shows from the previous list. So, without further adieu, here's some horror comic book recommendations for spooky season.
A note that this list is in no particular order!

The late 1980s were a watershed moment for Batman comics, when the character truly became the Dark Knight thanks to writer/artist Frank Miller. Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns," published across four issues in 1986, reimagined Batman from a detective adventurer into basically Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry Callahan character draped in a cape and cowl.
In "Returns," a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne (no longer Batman) has spent 10 years trying to find either a new reason to live or a good death, and failed. Gotham City is stuck in a wave of gang violence, so to stop that and his own inner turmoil, Bruce becomes Batman again. As much a political satire as a superhero book, Batman finds the world of 1986 may not be a friendly environment for him, which is a narrative representation of Miller's fundamental question: What purpose does Batman serve 50 years after his creation?

DC Comics held a 75-minute panel at New York Comic Con yesterday, highlighting its "All In" initiative and the new Absolute Universe.
During the panel, Absolute Batman creative team Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta addressed the overwhelmingly positive fan reaction to their first issue together and made a point of acknowledging and celebrating the work of series colourist Frank Martin and his contribution to this reimagined version of the Dark Knight.
They also shared new artwork from the upcoming second issue which, as you can see below, has revealed Batman's new Batmobile. He's built like a dump truck so it arguably makes sense that he's driving one through the streets of Gotham City!
The publisher also announced that it would be adding to its second wave of titles, as writer Deniz Camp confirmed that Absolute Martian Manhunter is joining Absolute Green Lantern and Absolute Flash in 2025.

Stephen King is primarily a prose writer, but he loves comic books too. He's dipped his toes into the graphic medium, contributing to 1985 one-shot "Heroes for Hope: Starring the X-Men" (a "comic jam" featuring writing from Alan Moore and George R. R. Martin too), and co-writing the horror comic "American Vampire" with Scott Snyder.
Before those, King's eighth novel — "Firestarter" — was him telling a superhero story in the horror space. "Firestarter" follows the McGees, a father (Andy) and daughter (Charlie) on the run from a government agency called the Shop. Years prior, Andy and his wife Vicky volunteered for experiments with the drug Lot 6, which turned him into a psychic and made Charlie born a "firestarter," able to spark flames with a thought.
King's seventh novel, "The Dead Zone," was about a man gaining clairvoyance and ultimately trying to assassinate a political candidate he foresees causing a nuclear war. "Firestarter" feels like a spiritual sequel,...

This article contains spoilers for "Absolute Batman" issue #1.
Whenever there's a new Batman movie, the jokes fly about how we all will again have to watch Bruce Wayne's parents be murdered, gunned down in an alleyway before their young sons' eyes, setting him on the path to (dark) knighthood. We get it, everyone thinks, wary of being hit over the head with the same beats.
It's unavoidable, though. Of all tragic origin stories in superhero comics, Batman's is the one that most defines his character. It's the root of both his rage and his compassion. Touching on Batman's parents in film after film, comic after comic can be tiresome, but if a story avoids it, is it truly a Batman story?
Late voice actor Kevin Conroy was the greatest Batman of them all. His crowning performance is in "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" when Bruce stands before his parents' graves,...

DC Comics has launched its own version of Marvel's Ultimate Universe with its Absolute line of comics, and Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta kicked that off in style with today's Absolute Batman #1.
The issue opens with Alfred Pennyworth arriving in Gotham City; he appears to be a secret agent of some sort and has been sent home to assess the threat posed by the "Party Animals" crime gang. His motorbike is stolen and his daughter, Julia, wants nothing to do with him.
A bulked-up Bruce Wayne is found working out in Croc's Gym. Run by Waylon Jones (Killer Croc in the main DC Universe), we learn he went to school with Eddie, Harvey, Oz, and Selina, characters who are now his friends and allies rather than Batman's greatest enemies.

In The Penguin's third episode, we were introduced to the drug Sofia Falcone and her late brother Alberto were planning to flood Gotham City with.
Called "Bliss," it's an alternative to "Drops" and hails from Arkham State Hospital. While confined there, "The Hangman" figured out that the drug - made from a rare mushroom - provides a euphoric effect for the user.
Add the idea of psychoactive compound to Arkham and chances are you think of Dr. Jonathan Crane. Better known to comic book fans as the Scarecrow, he's known for creating a Fear Toxin which leaves exposed to it in a state of absolute terror. It stands to reason then that he could also create a drug capable of calming Arkham's inmates.
However, we believe someone else might have been behind the creation of the "Bleeding Tooth Fungus."

The Penguin just dropped Episode 3, and by the end, the stakes have never been higher. As you may recall, before his death at the hands of Oz, Alberto Falcone intended to introduce a new drug to the streets of Gotham.
Only two people were aware of his scheme: Sofia Falcone and Oz. Now, both are working together—or at least they did—to bring this plan to life.
Sofia’s time at Arkham Asylum seems to have inspired Alberto’s plan for the new drug, which is something she was given during her stay there.
She even took Oz on a tour of the lab where “Bliss” is being developed. The drug is derived from the basidiospore of the Bleeding Tooth mushroom, which is a reproductive spore found in certain types of mushrooms. In this case, these spores produce euphoric effects that can numb the harsh realities of being in Arkham Asylum.

‘The Penguin’ just released episode 3, and by the end of the episode, the stakes have never been higher. As you probably know by now, before he was killed by Oz, Alberto Falcone planned to push a new drug to the streets of Gotham.
Only two people knew about his plan, Sofia Falcone and Oz, and now both of them are working together (or at least worked together) to see this plan come to fruition.
Sofia’s experience in the Arkham Asylum however seemed to be the inspiration behind Alberto’s plan as the new drug he worked on developing seems to be something she was given during her stay there.

The Batman put a new spin on iconic DC Comics villains like The Riddler, The Penguin, Catwoman, and The Joker. As refreshing as filmmaker Matt Reeves' approach to them was, many fans remain eager to see the Dark Knight take on foes who haven't featured in a film before.
One group at the top of many a wishlist - and a good fit for a franchise as grounded as "The Batman Epic Crime Saga" - is the Court of Owls.
Doing the rounds to promote The Penguin, Reeves was asked by Swosha if fans can expect to see the villains in The Batman - Part II. He responded, "We can't comment on the movie because we are doing the movie and then you'd know what movie we're doing and we're not going to say that yet."

During this past July's San Diego Comic-Con, DC Comics announced plans for a new Absolute Universe of comic books launching this October, November, and beyond.
Essentially, this is meant to be DC Comics' Ultimate Universe and each of these characters has been drastically reinvented, as a result. Whether what we see in these titles will influence DC Studios' plans remains to be seen and likely hinges on how these comics are received by fans.
Aipt recently sat down with Absolute Batman writer - and the man overseeing DC Comics' "All In" relaunch - Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta to learn what to expect from this bold new take on the Caped Crusader.
"We drew upon bats for inspiration," the latter offered. "When you read the story, I think we’re gonna reinforce what I just said. The idea was this wouldn’t be a new Batman and look, but function.

The upcoming Max series, The Penguin, has all the elements to introduce the Court of Owls as the main antagonists in The Batman – Part II. The series is set to chronicle the rise of Colin Farrell’s The Penguin as he tries to take control of the criminal underbelly of Gotham following Carmine Falcone’s death and the flooding of the city.
One of the most important parts of Gotham’s history is the Court of Owls, the secret society which has been controlling the city since its inception. While many have speculated that Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II might introduce the popular antagonists, Farrell’s The Penguin might just lay the groundwork for it.

Robert Pattinson is all set to return as Bruce Wayne in The Batman – Part II. Matt Reeves, who helmed the first film, recently revealed that the script for the sequel is almost finished and that they would be filming it this year. He also dropped hints at the possible villain for the sequel, terming the film a mystery that delves into the corruption of Gotham.
While many villains such as the Swamp Thing and Gentleman Ghost were rumored to have been included, Reeves’ statements about exposing the deeper corruption in Gotham have led fans to speculate that the Court of Owls might appear in the film. If that happens, Pattinson would be the only Batman actor in the films to have faced this foe.

Rumors relating to The Batman director Matt Reeves' plans for his highly-anticipated sequel have been doing the rounds since shortly after the movie was announced, and we finally have an official update on the plot of The Batman Part II straight from the filmmaker himself.
Reeves shared a story outline during a new interview with SFX Magazine, confirming that the movie will once again feature Batman investigating a mystery. He doesn't reveal anything too significant beyond this, but his comments have ignited a lot of speculation online.
"We've shared [the script] as we've been going along with DC, and they're super excited," he tells the mag. "It's going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption and it goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn't even anticipate in the first one.

As we speak, James Gunn and Peter Safran are working to shepherd the DC Comics universe on film. We'll have a better sense of how this new franchise might play out (and whether it's here for the long haul) after "Superman" -- personally directed by Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Superman -- soars into theaters on July 11, 2025.
While DC Films is preparing to introduce a new silver screen Superman, DC Comics is doing the same. This fall, DC is launching a new "Absolute" publishing line. This is, in a nutshell, a reboot for the shared setting of DC Comics (though it will run alongside the original instead of replacing it). Familiar characters will start from the beginning and might turn out very differently than they have before.
Comic writers Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson are the architects of "Absolute DC." On July 18, 2024, Snyder shared background on the project in his "Our Best Jackett" newsletter.

On August 16, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that comic writer Garth Ennis has written a script for a movie adaptation of his comic series "Crossed". Ennis' "Crossed" script has been acquired by the indie production company Six Studios.
These days, Ennis is most known as co-creator of "The Boys" (alongside artist Darick Robertson), the vicious superhero parody that's become one of Prime Video's premier programs. If you think "The Boys" can indulge in ultra violence and bad taste, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Published by Avatar Press, "Crossed" has well over 100 issues to its name, spread out over various mini-series and the long-running "Crossed: Badlands." Alan Moore even wrote the "Crossed +100" installment. What is this horror tale of epic length about? "Crossed" is basically Ennis' take on a zombie apocalypse.
In "Crossed," a pandemic sweeps the world that robs people of empathy and inhibition. The infected turn into raging sadists, their...

James Gunn might currently be looking ahead to the release of Superman, set to reboot the DC Universe and bring about a new era with new faces adorning fan-favorite superheroes of the franchise. However, it looks as if the live-action and animated universe that he is set to head is the entirety of his jurisdiction as far as the overall franchise is concerned.

A month ago, in an announcement video on DC’s YouTube channel, writers Joshua Williamson and Scott Snyder unveiled their new comic line, Absolute Universe. Unlike The New 52, this initiative is designed to coexist with the existing DC universe rather than replace or retcon it.
All In is about inviting everybody in — the existing creators, some new creators, everything — to tell their best stories, and to begin them all at one point […] The idea is to create the greatest jumping-on point for you guys in many, many years.
The Absolute Universe, crafted by Darkseid, is a new alternate setting where DC invites writers and artists to reimagine iconic characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman from scratch. This universe will exist alongside the main DC timeline as part of a broader, ongoing narrative. The term “absolute” signifies the high prestige associated with these premium DC editions. Ast last month's San Diego Comic-Con, DC Comics announced plans for a new Absolute Universe of comic books launching this October, November, and beyond.
The publisher has today shared the main covers for the first issues of Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman, and Absolute Superman along with the Trinity's new logos and shared variant covers for each launch title.
This is meant to be DC Comics' Ultimate Universe and each of these characters has been drastically reinvented, as a result. Whether what we see in these titles will influence DC Studios' plans remains to be seen and likely hinges on how these comics are received by fans.
For Absolute Batman, we have artwork from Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin, Wes Craig and Mike Spicer, Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair, Mitch Gerads, and Ian Bertram.

After Superman Returns delivered a rather toothless take on its title character (who knew he'd end up being a deadbeat dad?), comic book fans were eager to see the hero actually punch someone in 2013's Man of Steel.
We got plenty of that, but Zack Snyder's take on Superman was still incredibly divisive. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League were every bit as controversial as their predecessor, though Henry Cavill's interpretation of the Kryptonian still has plenty of fans.
Talking to The Hollywood Handle about the upcoming Rebel Moon director's cuts, Snyder was asked to share his thoughts on David Corenswet's very different super-suit in James Gunn's Superman.
"I’m gonna say that: let’s see it in the movie," he responded somewhat diplomatically. "I’m interested to see how it works, you know, as a piece of storytelling. Yeah. But I am excited.

DC Comics chief Jim Lee debuted a new logo for DC Studios on Friday at San Diego Comic-Con that returns to the design the company used from 1976 to 2005, replacing the logo first adopted in 2016.
Starting in 1976, the comics publisher’s logo — which appeared in the top left corner of virtually every issue — was a circular badge with its two letters surrounded by a thick black circle, inside of which contained four white, five-pointed stars. In 2005, DC updated the logo to a more modern looking design: a single star swirling around slanted DC letters. In 2012, the logo was changed again, turning the “D” into a page peeling back to reveal the “C” — a somewhat controversial design that was replaced in just four years to the most recent version, which simplified the logo to block DC letters surrounded by a simple circle. That logo was also put in front of DC’s feature film adaptations,...

DC is going into the future by looking to the past.
The entertainment company Friday unveiled its new logo, including a logo for the fledgling screen media division, DC Studios. And it’s a logo with which many fans and readers will be familiar.
The company is bringing back the classic logo, known as the “DC bullet,” that graced its publications for almost three decades, from 1977 to 2005. The logo was designed by Milton Glaser, the legendary graphic designer who also introduced the “I Love NY” logo, among other notable works. Not only was his DC logo the longest-lasting, it also came at a time of a rising pop culture influence, making its impression all the more deep.
DC president and publisher Jim Lee said the logo was meant to evoke its powerful legacy while ushering in a new era of stories.

The story of Henry Cavill is simultaneously one of the nicest as well as upsetting to ever exist in Hollywood. The actor has been blessed just as much as he has been cursed, and not just in terms of his career or looks. Cavill’s entire existence is a massive black hole of paradox and it is a wonder how he continues to be adored on such a level by the fans.

Henry Cavill may be one of the most endearing muscle-men in all of Hollywood’s entertainment industry, but there are still a lot of sides to him that are yet to be explored. For instance, although he may not seem like it from the handsome jock-like persona people tend to assume of him from the outside, he is actually a major geeky nerd when it comes to video games and stuff.

But while his being a nerd is all fair and good, what is actually provoking are the vile accusations some critics have been lauding him with, deeming him a ‘sexist.’ Of course, these accusations couldn’t be farther from the truth, and the proof for this is all the times Cavill showed the utmost respect to his female co-stars while no one was watching.

There's a huge amount of buzz surrounding DC Comics' Absolute Universe plans, and we now have a better idea of what to expect from this bold new take on characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.
Thanks to DC's October solicitations (via Bleeding Cool), we have intel on the All In Special which will serve as a launching platform for this new reality.
It's said that, in the Absolute Universe, "DC's biggest icons come of age with fewer advantages while facing greater opposition than ever before and retaining the immutable heroism that continues to inspire and entertain fans. But can they really protect the light that shines inside them when the world in which they live is hurtling toward a terrible destiny?"
That last part is likely a reference to Darkseid, a villain expected to be a pivotal part of DC Comics storytelling over the next few years.

Regardless of your opinion on the Snyderverse, it’s undeniable that Snyder’s vision for the Dceu was distinctively dark and unique compared to traditional superhero fare.
Although the Dceu was occasionally profitable, it didn’t achieve widespread success with general audiences. However, it did cultivate a dedicated cult following, with many fans valuing its darker and edgier tone.
As James Gunn’s new Dcu takes shape with ‘Superman’ currently filming in Cincinnati, fans of the Snyderverse have reason to celebrate. Snyder’s vision may still come to life, but through comics rather than film.

After months of rumours (and a fair few leaks) about DC Comics launching its own version of Marvel's Ultimate Universe, those plans have finally been confirmed today.
When the Absolute Power event concludes this October, it will be followed by a DC All In one-shot, co-written by Joshua Williamson and Scott Snyder with artwork by Daniel Sampere and Wes Craig. That sets the stage for several ongoing titles to get new creative teams and introduces the Absolute Universe.
While specific details are being kept under wraps, it sounds like this world was somehow created by Darkseid and is, according to Snyder, a "dangerous, wild new planet" that will be part of "a bigger story that we'll be telling over the course of the next few years."
