‘The Amityville Legacy’ Finds a Haunted Monkey Inside the Amityville Toybox [The Amityville IP]

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

With Amityville Vanishing Point unavailable to stream or buy in Canada, I’ve had to leap frog over it and go directly to 2016’s The Amityville Legacy (aka Amityville Toybox).

Co-written and co-directed by Dustin Ferguson and Mike Johnson (file away the former: he’ll return several times in the future), the 15th Amityville film is another low-budget, independent effort. All of the characters have the same first name as the actor playing them, and the performances are often amateurish. Namely the film’s visual aesthetic is flat and the audio quality is poor, particularly in early scenes set in cars. 'Meathook Massacre II' coming to Vimeo, VHS and DVD

Dustin Ferguson has directed 28 feature films and over 60 music videos to date. He's known for Directing "Silent Night, Bloody Night 2" with Jennifer Runyon Corman and "Camp Blood 4" and "5". He's also collaborated with such artists as Lords of Acid, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and The Egyptian Lover. In 2015 he shot Meathook Massacre on S-vhs in Lincoln, Ne.

The film followed 3 young women who encounter car trouble on the way to a concert and are forced to go find help. However, they stumble upon a masked Maniac wielding a Meathook and all goes quickly sour. It became an instant cult classic after it was released on both VHS and VOD. Merchandise quickly followed: a comic book, a Nintendo game adaptation and even T-shirts.
