“Love in Taipei,” the Paramount+ original movie based on Abigail Hing Wen’s book “Loveboat, Taipei,” ends with main character Ever Wong (Ashley Liao) making several big decisions, but it also marks a significant departure from where Wen’s book concludes.
Sent by her parents to a cultural immersion program in Taiwan for the summer, Ever gets in better touch with her heritage while embarking on her own journey of self-discovery. As she struggles through Mandarin calligraphy classes, Ever blossoms socially with the help of Sophie Ha (Chelsea Zhang), and she further solidifies her desire to pursue dancing as her dream career, not the practical path of medical school that her parents have coached her into since they came to the United States from Taiwan. Abigail Hing Wen’s novel “Loveboat Taipei” is coming to the small screen with the help of director Arvin Chen. Wen executive produced the film, which landed on Paramount+ Aug. 10. In “Love in Taipei,” Ever Wong (Ashley Liao) finds herself shipped off to a cultural immersion program full of Mandarin calligraphy classes, fan dance and bo staff lessons and more to learn about her Taiwanese roots. Her parents send her to the program, known more commonly as Loveboat, the summer before she is supposed to attend medical school.
While she doesn’t expect this change in plans, Ever still hopes to film her audition for a dance company out of the way of her parents discovering, since they don’t realize her true passion lies in dance. Apart from the two career paths, dreams and languages Ever learns to navigate at Loveboat, she also meets two very different boys — Rick...

Right now, with the sheer number of coming-of-age teen dramas with voice-overs about self-discovery released every day on Ott platforms, it seems like there’s not much room for originality. What’s interesting is that Love In Taipei isn’t even about teenagers; the protagonist, Ever Wong (Ashley Liao), is actually 21 when she’s forced into summer school by her parents. Immigrant Taiwanese Ever is weighed down by parental expectations and pursuing her own dreams. Nothing new there, but her self-aware journey begins when she goes to Taipei for a summer of what she thinks is more studying than fun but quickly learns otherwise. It’s true that there’s only so much you can expect from such a story, but what I found lacking was the exploration of Taiwanese culture. Funnily enough, Ever has gone to learn Mandarin, how to make dumplings, and, so to speak, her own culture.

While “Love in Taipei” promises transportive and transformative escapades with its adaptation of Abigail Hing Wen’s novel “Loveboat, Taipei,” the story’s core strengths are undervalued in the translation from book to screen. This Paramount Plus feature, centered on a young woman embarking on a life-changing overseas journey, only pays lip service to the struggle of a first-generation Asian-American caught between two worlds. Instead, it places more emphasis on her romantic entanglements with two young men who all too often motivate her foundational change. Director Arvin Chen cleverly brings us into her psyche through whimsical aesthetic techniques and fantastical asides, but doesn’t make her emotions palpable enough to touch our hearts.
Eighteen-year-old Ever Wong (Ashley Liao) has always felt like an outsider in her tiny suburban town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, being one of only three Asian-American students in her predominantly white school. Her parents (Jacko Chiang and...

If there is one superhero show that has outlasted its expiration date, it may be "Titans." After three seasons, it seems the gritty affair will indefinitely struggle to land its lofty ambitions in a satisfying way. Despite some great ideas and themes, I've found myself wanting a lot more out of the series by the time the credits roll in each season finale. But here we are, another season is well on its way and approaching quicker than ever (or at least it feels like it).
Judging by the recent trailer, "Titans" may just be finding its stride in balancing zany superhero stuff and a horror-tinged storyline. However, I know what promises are worth. Expectations aren't sky-high this time around,...

DC Universe’s Titans series is maddeningly uneven. Its second season, out now on disc for those unwilling to buy the service, is perhaps slightly better than its inaugural outing but it’s still a mess.
Let’s start with the fact that everyone behind the camera doesn’t understand Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), so they depict him as bitter and angry, lost and without a clear sense of self. He was never like that in the comics and this is jarring and not terribly well thought through. During the season he is haunted by the vision of Bruce Wayne (Ian Glen), who seems far less brooding than one would expect an aging Batman to be.
The final episode shot for season one is used to open season two as Dick, Donna Troy (Conor Leslie), Hank Hall (Alan Ritchson), Gar Logan (Ryan Potter), Kory Anders (Anna Diop), Jason Todd (Curran Walters...

The cast also includes Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Conor Leslie as Wonder Girl, Iain Glenn as Bruce Wayne, Minka Kelly as Dawn Granger, Alan Ritchson as Hank Hall, Curran Walters as Jason Todd, Chelsea Zhang as Rose Wilson and Joshua Orpin as Conner Kent.

Titans season 2 employs a time jump for a second episode that feels more like a season premiere.

Titans Season 2 Episode 2
Picking up three months after “Trigon,” the second episode of Titans Season 2, “Rose,” is a tight story that sets up new mysteries, and introduces fresh threats – making it feel more like a premiere than last week’s installment.
Straightaway, it’s worth mentioning how the action has benefited by jumping forward a few months. The team is in training, and while there remains tension, cohesion is setting in. Teagan Croft appears more settled as Rachel, and as a result, the character is more likable – even though we do see the darkness that continues to haunt her. Ryan Potter’s Gar and Curran Walters’ Jason work as squabbling teammates, and their sparring scene is fun, even if Gar is the weaker link at the moment.

Just when I thought superhero TV couldn’t get as equal to or any cooler than what the Arrowverse has planned for the next year, Titans‘ second season premiere effortlessly knocked off my socks. Long story short, the threat that was Trigon is now in the rear-view mirror and Deathstroke has emerged to take his place as the big bad. Oh yeah, Bruce Wayne is hanging around, too, and you can’t argue with that.
As the show moves forward, all we can do is sit back and enjoy as the producers behind it further open a treasure trove loaded with beloved DC characters. Next on the docket is that of cult favorite Rose Wilson, perhaps better known as Ravager. Played by Chelsea Zhang, she looks to be fittingly cast as the daughter of the aforementioned Deathstroke.
Speaking of which, she finally arrives on the scene in a bounty of...

Just as the Titans neutralize one Big Bad, another lurks right around the corner in the first full trailer for Season 2 of DC Universe’s flagship series.
The two-minute preview includes, among other things, Hank and Dawn (promoted series regulars Alan Ritchson and Minka Kelly) at odds about their future; what appears to be a kidnapping crisis for Kori (Anna Diop); the amusing story behind how Conner Kent (new series regular Joshua Orpin) found his “Superboy” T-shirt; a defiant/bratty Jason Todd (promoted series regular Curran Walters) getting in his predecessor’s face; and Donna Troy (promoted series regular Conor Leslie) dissing a nemesis’ codename.

I am going to be honest with you, I have never given Titans a chance because I truly thought that DC Universe would fail halfway into it’s first year. They have proved me wrong and I am sorely regretting it. This poster and an interesting press release were gifted to us by the folks at DC Universe. Check this out:
To say we're excited for the arrival of DC Universe’s ‘Titans’Season 2 on September 6th is like saying water is wet. Our recent first look video was overflowing with superhero goodness, and now we've got a poster that's equally pulse-pounding. All our returning heroes are here -- with Dick looking appropriately focused, Donna looking appropriately fierce, and Jason looking appropriately, well, surly. Plus, Kory and Dawn have bitchin' new hairdos, and Rachel has her forehead gem! But it's the new faces that have us most excited -- including Joshua Orpin's hunky Superboy,...

Despite a temporary shutdown earlier this summer, the DC Comics ultra-violent, live-action TV adaptation "Titans", aka "Freebirds", continues shooting Season 2 in Toronto for producer Michael Wray and Warner Bros Television, streaming on "DC Universe" September 6, 2019, showcasing the following DC Comics characters:

"Garth eventually steps out from the shadow of his mentor to become his own hero as a 'Titan'.
"'Ravager' aka 'Rose Wilson' (Chelsea Zhang) is the daughter of the deadly 'Deathstroke' aka 'Slade Wilson' (Esai Morales), forced to undergo the same procedure that granted her father superhuman abilities.

Titans season 1 became an instant fan favorite when it arrived on DC Universe last year as it featured so many characters we either hadn’t seen on screen before or we thought were off-limits to DC’s TV division. And now, season 2 is only going to continue to exploit the freedom the show has to seemingly add in any character it wants by enlisting yet more iconic heroes and villains.
This apparently includes Aquaman’s young sidekicks Aqualad and Aquagirl. The Geeks Worldwide is reporting that Titans is due to add the Atlantean heroes to its line-up during its sophomore run. Gww says that Aqualad, likely the original Garth version, could show up thanks to info from the Titans Facebook fan group. Meanwhile, a casting breakdown for a 13-15 year-old Mediterranean girl to play a “funny, sarcastic and witty” character has them theorizing this could be Tula Aka Aquagirl.
