Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man – Universal has brought them all back to the screen in the decades since their glory days in the 1930s and ’40s. But one classic Universal monster who hasn’t had a new movie since the 1950s is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, a.k.a. the Gill Man. The closest we’ve gotten is the unofficial version of the creature that was seen in the 1987 classic The Monster Squad… but last month, it was reported that genre regular James Wan and his production company Atomic Monster are developing “a grounded modernized retelling” of Creature from the Black Lagoon that will lean into “visceral horror while paying respect to the original classic.” Now, Deadline has learned that this Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot will be written by Sean Tretta.

Acclaimed horror director James Wan is reportedly in discussions to helm a remake of the 1954 film “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” If finalized, the project would mark Universal Pictures’ newest effort to revive its iconic monster franchises for modern audiences.
The original movie, directed by Jack Arnold, tells the story of scientists who discover an ancient aquatic humanoid in the Amazon River. Featuring groundbreaking 3D effects and practical creature costumes, “Creature from the Black Lagoon” is considered foundational to the horror genre.
Wan, known for hits like “Saw,” “The Conjuring,” and “Insidious,” brings considerable experience directing horror films. However, faithfully adapting the iconic Gill-man monster poses challenges. The original practical effects and performances by Ben Chapman and Ricou Browning made the Gill-man viscerally terrifying. Some worry a remake may over-rely on computer-generated imagery (CGI), harming its tactile essence.
One example the remake could follow is 2017’s “The Shape of Water,...

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director James Wan is set to return to the ocean for his next feature.
Universal has been trying to get a remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon off the ground for a few years at this stage, and the project is finally moving forward with the horror maestro at the helm.
According to THR, Wan is in early talks to direct a reimagining of the black-and-white '50s classic, which was helmed by Jack Arnold.
The original focused on a group of scientists attempting to study an ancient prehistoric monster known as the Gill-Man, who soon becomes dangerous and begins to pick them off after taking a shine to Julia Adams' character. It's still viewed by many as one of the most influential horror films of all time.

Given his experience bringing horror franchises to screens and his time spent on watery adventures with the Aquaman films, it feels somehow natural that James Wan would consider jumping aboard a modernized version of The Creature From The Black Lagoon. So word that he's in early talks for exactly that is not truly surprising.
The 1954 original, directed by Jack Arnold, leaned into the 3D technique to tell the story of the Gill-Man, a prehistoric human-fish hybrid monster who lived in the water and the ichthyologist – played by Julie Adams – who catches his eye.
Various updates have been attempted through the years, including by John Landis, Ivan Reitman, Gary Ross (son of the original film's scriptwriter Arthur A. Ross) and Breck Eisner, but all sank into the development more. An effort to include the Creature in Universal's Dark Universe shared cinematic concept got as far as Will Beall writing the script.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon is rising once again.
James Wan, the creator of the Saw and The Conjuring horror franchises, is developing a new take on the classic Universal monster property and is in early talks to direct the feature project.
The move comes as Wan and his collaborators presented Universal with a pitch to remake the 1954 monster classic. A writer will now be hired to write a script, working in concert with Wan.
This is the first project Wan has attached himself to as a director following his company’s production banner, Atomic Monster, merging with Blumhouse. Wan was under water for the last few years on DC superhero movie Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and has been looking to get back to his horror roots in some way.
Wan will act as a producer on Creature, while Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott serve as executive producers.

Spoiler Warning: This story mentions major spoilers for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” now streaming on Netflix.
Axel Foley is back in Beverly Hills, and so is Eddie Murphy.
“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” director Mark Molloy set out to make a film with the same feeling and tone as the 1984 classic “Beverly Hills Cop” and its 1987 sequel, “Beverly Hills Cop 2.” He calls the latest film in the franchise “my love letter to the first two films.”
Molloy recruited Jahmin Assa, the film’s production designer, to pay tribute to those earlier chapters in numerous ways. Assa’s goal was to create something that made “Los Angeles feel timeless and as fresh as it did in the 1980s,” and that included shutting down city streets in Detroit and Los Angeles to finding the perfect location to execute a 1980s-style mansion shootout for the film’s third act, and crash...

Will Beall was tapped to write a Justice League movie in 2011. Warner Bros. wanted to follow in the footsteps of Marvel Studios (The Avengers was released the following years) and even eyed Ben Affleck to direct long before he was cast as the Dceu's Batman.
Plans ultimately changed, with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice laying the foundation for Zack Snyder's version of Justice League. Joss Whedon was enlisted for reshoots which completely changed the movie, only for Zack Snyder's Justice League to be released on streaming in 2021.
Will Beall received a writing credit on the latter version and has now opened up on why that might have been and how his script differed.

Screenwriter Will Beall has talked about his unused script for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and says it ‘owed a lot’ to Back To The Future II.
An entire book could be written about Zack Snyder’s Justice League, its difficult production, and its later re-edit. One of the first people to work on the 2017 superhero team-up film, though, was screenwriter Will Beall.
While 2013’s Man Of Steel was still in post-production, Beall was hired to write a script for Justice League – one that would ultimately go unused. David S Goyer was brought in as his replacement, and then Chris Terrio was later brought in to rewrite Goyer’s draft. Such is Hollywood.
Over a decade later, Beall has talked briefly about his involvement with the DC universe and his writing on Justice League in particular. He revealed that some of the ideas in his draft ended up in the finished movie,...

Beverly Hills Cop is one of the best and most iconic franchises in the action comedy genre, and most of the credit for that goes to its leading man, Eddie Murphy. Created by Danilo Bach and Daniel Petrie Jr., the first film in the franchise came out in 1984, and now, with the fourth film coming out nearly thirty years after the third and the worst film in the franchise came out, the hype for the franchise and its iconic theme song is back on the top. So, if you loved Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, here are some more great action comedy films you could watch next.

Actors almost never become movie stars overnight. Even the born-to-dazzle likes of Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, and Paul Newman needed a bit of runway to soar to that rarified Hollywood air. Eddie Murphy, however, needed just one moment in his first movie to become a generational showbiz phenomenon.
That moment arrived 38 minutes into Walter Hill's 1982 action-comedy hit "48 Hrs.," when Murphy's furloughed criminal Reggie Hammond convinces Nick Nolte's Detective Jack Cates to let him shakedown a redneck bar's racist patrons for information on the whereabouts of a cop killer. Reggie, tired of Cates insistence that it takes "bullls*** and experience" to successfully interrogate suspects, invites the officer to "Come on in and experience some of my bulls***." Armed with nothing but Cates' shield and his mouth, Reggie bullies cows a saloon full of hostile white folks into terrified silence.

Coming almost thirty years after the last installment in the franchise was released – and nearly forty years after the series debuted – Eddie Murphy returns as Detroit Detective Axel Foley in the latest release from Netflix Films – Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. What is remarkably refreshing about the not-so-young cop’s new adventure is that it may be the best of the series since it started back in 1984.
Foley’s latest case has him returning to Beverly Hills after his longtime friend Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) is reported missing by Foley’s estranged daughter (Taylour Paige) and Axel heads to California to find out what happened to his old friend. Once in Beverly Hills, the case of Billy’s disappearance quickly becomes the tip of an iceberg leading Axel to uncover a conspiracy that may threaten the entire Beverly Hills police force.

Eddie Murphy was a household name in the United States of America way before he forayed into films due to his standup comedy. But, if my memory isn’t failing me, he garnered international fame after his work in The Nutty Professor, Mulan, and Dr. Dolittle. And after he became the voice of Donkey in Shrek, every kid in the whole wide world became familiar with Murphy’s body of work. However, as the cinematic landscape, especially the comedy genre, started to change, and the pile of bad reviews turned into a mountain, Murphy decided to take a break. His return to the big screen wasn’t all that good. So, he took yet another break and returned with one of the best movies of all time, Dolemite Is My Name. Now, he seems to be in the mood to reprise some of his older roles. Comedy 2 America wasn’t good.

Eddie Murphy was only 23 when "Beverly Hills Cop" arrived in theaters in 1984, and the action comedy helped make him a superstar. Murphy's raw talent was already apparent thanks to his work on "Saturday Night Live," a show he joined when he as 19. His feature debut in Walter Hill's 1982 flick "48 Hrs." took him even further, as did his follow-up movie, 1983's "Trading Places". But "Beverly Hills Cop," directed by Martin Brest, helped solidify that Murphy was the real deal; a bonafide movie star. It was a mega-hit, and almost immediately made trash-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley an iconic character. Murphy was so cool, so confident, so suave that he took the character to extreme heights, taking a high concept pitch — what if a tough city cop ended up in posh Beverly Hills? — and creating movie magic in the process. Like Eddie Murphy, Axel Foley was young, hip, and in-demand.

Driving into town in his beat-up Chevy Nova, Detroit detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) still cannot believe the sights of Beverly Hills. He looks with bewilderment at high-fashion stores, a man dressed like a rockstar, and a blonde in a Corvette who offers a playful wink despite her boyfriend in the adjoining seat. Foley ends the sequence with his infectious chuckle, out of place in Beverly Hills but not out of ideas.
When Foley returns 40 years later for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, he repeats the drive in yet another beat-up vehicle. He notices a new set of California absurdities, including a child shooting video for his Instagram modeling mother and a woman in full burka passing Tom Ford’s store. But nothing here shocks Foley these days. Nothing drives him to his classic chuckle. Instead he gives it all a knowing smile and drives on.

It is hard to believe it has been 40 years since Eddie Murphy first exploded onto the screen as one of his signature characters, Axel Foley, in 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop. But even if that 22 year old is now 63, he is still on the beat and doesn’t miss a beat all these years later in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, almost seeming to have stopped time with this character who is just as funny, sharp and entertaining as ever.
The original was the top-grossing movie of its year and led to two sequels, one in 1987 and another in 1994. That’s right, we haven’t had an Axel fix for 30 years, though not for lack of trying; there were several scripts along the way, but none felt right to its star until finally bringing in producer Jerry Bruckheimer who (with late partner Don Simpson) made the first couple of films.

There are a few valid reasons to make a sequel four decades down the track from an action-comedy blockbuster that left an indelible pop-cultural imprint: 1. A smart script with a completely fresh take on a formulaic genre. 2. Writing that digs into the ways an iconic character known for his rule-breaking irreverence adjusts to the social shifts of a different century. 3. New technology that allows for more explosive thrills. 4. The nostalgia of audiences for whom the original holds enduringly fond memories. 5. Lil Nas X agrees to write and perform a song, spinning rap verses around synthmeister Harold Faltermeyer’s catchy theme tune.
Sauntering along 30 years after the third installment opened to scalding reviews and underwhelming grosses, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F justifies its existence only with points 4 and 5. Which will likely be enough to satisfy diehard fans. Directed with journeyman efficiency by first-timer Mark Molloy and written by a committee that...

A renegade cop who refuses to play by the rules or pay any mind to the ungodly amount of collateral damage he causes in the name of saving Los Angeles from its own systemic rot, Axel Foley makes so much sense as the hero of a Netflix movie that it’s hard to believe the company didn’t invent him itself. Maybe that helps to explain why “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” feels sturdier and more self-possessed than your average straight-to-streaming legacy sequel, including Eddie Murphy’s own “Coming 2 America.” Here is a story of — and about — the diminished but enduring power of a classic brand in modern Hollywood (or at least the greater Hollywood area), and the moral of that story boils down to a simple idea: Familiarity is such a powerful force that it can inspire people to forgive pretty much anything.

Filmmaker Zack Snyder was allowed to share his vision for Justice League with the world in 2021, though that ultimately just saw the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement transform into #RestoreTheSnyderVerse. With it clear that's never going to happen, the campaign has largely lost steam in recent months.
Today, though, Snyder has taken to Vero to confirm that Zack Snyder's Justice League will be released theatrically. Before getting too excited, this may be a fan screening instead of a limited or wide release, likely organised by the director.
However, Warner Bros. may also be looking to recoup some of its losses given how successful other re-releases have been this year; Sony Pictures, for example, netted millions by putting the Spider-Man movies back in theaters earlier this summer. Still, reminding moviegoers of the Dceu...

The latest installment of Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, doesn’t come to Netflix until July 3. Still, Murphy is already discussing the possibility of a Beverly Hills Cop 5. Speaking with Today about Axel Foley’s return to screens, Murphy said he’s not opposed to playing the character again if the story is there.
When asked about playing the wise-cracking, case-solving Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop 5, Eddie Murphy said, “I hope so because this movie turned out so good, especially if you grew up watching the movie, then you’ll really, really love this new picture.”
Speaking about Axel Foley’s appeal, Murphy says the trick to his lasting popularity is that he has something for everyone to relate to. “Axel is the everyman. He’s not a superhero or super cop. He’s the everyman that rises to the occasion.

There was a time when writer Will Beall was one of Hollywood's most sought-after writers. However, after the star-studded Gangster Squad failed to meet expectations, that all changed.
Warner Bros. still turned to him for help with expanding its DC Universe, though, and he's credited with working on both Aquaman and...Zack Snyder's Justice League?! The reason Beall got a "Story by" credit on that director's cut is because he was once tasked with writing a vaguely similar Justice League movie which, believe it or not, Ben Affleck was eyed to direct (years being cast as Batman).
The project started taking shape in the early 2010s and was ultimately scrapped when Warner Bros. put all of its eggs in Zack Snyder's basket. In this feature, we take a look at what might have been, delving into everything we know about Beall's plans for this scrapped project.

Ahead of the film’s release in July, Netflix releases a new clip featuring Eddie Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and helicopter piloting that would make Tom Cruise wince.
Axel Foley is returning to our screens this summer as Netflix gets ready to release the fourth film in the legendary action comedy film series, titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Helmed by Mark Molloy, the film brings Eddie Murphy back in one of his most iconic roles and we were treated to a full trailer just last month.
Netflix is backing this one, meaning that the film is headed straight to the small screen. Still, if this newly-released clip is anything to go by, the action will still be outsized.

Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die jolted the battered summer box office back to life with a better-than-expected domestic opening of $56 million and $104.6 million globally.
Moreover, it puts Will Smith on the road to a career comeback two years after the infamous Oscars slap.
Ride or Die, reuniting Smith with Martin Lawrence, is the fourth outing in Sony’s long-running franchise and earned an A- CinemaScore in North America alongside generally positive reviews. Just as promising, 44 percent of the audience was between ages 18 and 34, showing Smith has a following among younger consumers. Black moviegoers made up the largest quadrant of the audience with 44 percent.
Ride or Die is arguably the first film of the summer to come in ahead of tracking, which had it opening in the $48 million to $50 million range. It’s also the second biggest domestic launch of the season behind Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,...

Will Smith snuck into a Los Angeles movie theater on Friday night to watch his new movie, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, alongside a paying audience.
The actor documented his night out on social media.
“We’re in Baldwin Hills. We’re about to go in the theater,” Smith says in the video of his theatrical visit. “It’s a ritual I have, when I have a movie come out. On Friday, Saturday, usually a matinee on Sunday, I like going to the theaters.”
Smith is then shown sporting a mask while watching his film with fans.
After the movie ended, Smith revealed to shocked moviegoers that he had been watching the film with them. A growing crowd seemed excited to see Smith and captured photos and videos. One fan gave the movie a “10 out of 10” and Smith thanked him.

If early weekend estimates are correct, Sony’s buddy action comedy Bad Boys: Ride or Die could help jolt the battered summer office back to life with a domestic box opening of $53 million. Moreover, it could help put Smith on the road to a career comeback after the infamous Oscars slap, which was seemingly addressed in the film.
Bad Boys 4, reuniting Smith with Martin Lawrence in the fourth outing of Sony’s long-running franchise, earned generally positive reviews and, perhaps more importantly, an A- CinemaScore. Black moviegoers made up the largest quadrant of the audience with 44 percent.
Friday’s haul of $21.6 million included $5.9 million in Thursday night previews. Ride or Die is arguably the first film of the summer to come in ahead of tracking, which had it opening to $48 million to $50 million. It’s also the second biggest behind Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

On June 6, 2024, Sony Pictures released “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth film of this action-comedy franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. When their former captain is implicated in corruption, police officers Mike Lowry (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) have to work to clear his name. The movie is directed by Adil & Bilall and written by Chris Bremner and Will Beall.
Critics reviews are mixed on Rotten Tomatoes, with a consensus that reads, “Will Smith and Martin Lawrence remain good company even when ‘Bad Boys’ strains to up the ante, proving there’s still life left in this high-octane franchise.” Perhaps more telling is the audience score of 98%, proving fans still love this funny duo. Joining the action this time around is a supporting cast that includes Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, Eric Dane and plenty of fun cameos. Read our full review round-up below.

Chicago –“Bad Boys: Ride Or Die,” the fourth in this series, is a big budget clunker that’s clearing coasting on fumes. A wheezy Martin Lawrence, and a post-slap Will Smith, are trying to recapture some of their former box office glory by trying to milk their still considerable chemistry for all its worth. The best that can be said is that it’s less of an interminable slog than I thought it would be.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The plot … such as it is … has their foul mouthed deceased captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano) being framed for being a mixed-up-with-drug-cartels dirty cop. However he sends them videotaped messages from beyond the grave detailing his own investigation to root out the dirty cops. This leads to the Bad Boys being on the run and framed for crimes they didn’t commit.

At one point in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, one of the principal characters announces, “This is some dysfunctional shit!” With self-aware comments like that, who needs film critics? Not that reviews will matter to the devoted fans of the action-comedy buddy cop franchise that began three decades ago and whose antecedents date as far back as 1974’s Freebie and the Bean and Busting (feel free to cite even earlier ones). It’s a durable concept, even if this fourth installment feels more than a little strained.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian directing duo behind Bad Boys: Ride or Die, are what people are really talking about when they speak of Michael Bay. In these dark days of anonymous blockbusters with no personality or pop, it is indeed common for people to wax nostalgic about Bay, wishing that Bayhem would one day return to American screens in its full glory.
It’s a weird sentiment though, and not just because Bay hasn’t gone anywhere. But it’s strange because Bay was a byword among film fans of the 2000s and 2010s: shorthand for grotesque messes that emphasized single spectacular shots over basic visual storytelling. When people remember Michael Bay, then, they remember not the actual Bay, but rather the idea of Michael Bay: fun action, striking images, and a sense of humor.

In 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) says the quiet part out loud about how he and Mike Lowery (Will Smith) had “more days behind them than in front,” and wondered if playing cops and robbers was how they wanted to spend their remaining time. Granted, that film still ended wildly, with Mike fighting his own son and his ex, an actual witch, in a building on fire, but that’s neither here nor there. Adil & Bilall’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, as it turns out, takes the question a bit more seriously, especially after Mike finds himself finally getting hitched to a beautiful woman (Melanie Liburd) and, in the wake of the death of Joe Pantoliano’s Captain Howard, has Anakin Skywalker-esque nightmares about losing her.

It may all be ridiculous if you think about it too much, but this action-comedy franchise still has gas in the tank 30 years after the fortuitous teaming of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence first hit the beat as notorious Miami cops aka the “Bad Boys.”
Perhaps the most action-packed edition yet, Bad Boys: Ride or Die turns the tables on the two title stars as Mike Lawrey (Smith) and partner Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) find themselves on the run and on the other side of the law. Their beloved late Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano), who died at the hands of vicious cartel member Armando Aretas (Jacob Scipio) in the previous film, 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, is accused posthumously of being on the take from the cartels. Columbia Pictures’ action-comedy movie “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is set to play in cinemas in mainland China from June 22, it was announced on Thursday.
Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the film is the fourth in the nearly 30-year-old Bad Boys franchise. It sees the titular Miami cops investigate corruption in the police force after their late boss is accused of colluding with a foreign mafia. But the tables are turned and the pair have to go on the run while still trying to solve the case.
The film releases in a multitude of international territories from June 5 and in North America from June 7. The China date, only two weeks later, is in keeping with recent trends that give Hollywood titles near-synchronized outings in the Middle Kingdom and a modicum of marketing runway.

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Here’s everything we know about Beverly Hills Cop 4!

The Beverly Hills Cop movie series started in 1984 and it was one of the works that made Eddie Murphy a household star in the 80s and 90s. The first two movies were highly successful, but the third movie was a box office bomb and was panned by critics; today, it is considered to be the weakest movie in the series. Now, in 2024, amidst the revival/reboot craze, Axel Foley is back once again as Murphy tries to revive his career after a series of failures and controversies. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is the fourth movie in the series and it will be released by Netflix on July 3, 2024 globally.
As we wait for the premiere, Netflix has just released the first official trailer for the upcoming movie, several months after the initial teaser was released. We on Fiction Horizon are bringing you the trailer for your enjoyment!
